Caellia stared through unshed tears out over the village from the terrace overlooking the gentle fountain that allowed water to flow around the Mother tree. How could they have done this to her? Why had they done this to her? A small sob threatened to escape when a small cough to her left alerted her to the fact that she was not alone. She did not turn to face the owner of the cough. Instead, she chose to try to ignore the person in hopes that they would go away.
“Queen Caellia?” inquired a hesitant voice. Caellia sighed to herself before answering; however, without turning around to face the owner of the voice, “Yes?”
“I’m Ariel, Nalia sent me to show you your new armor.” She watched Caellia closely; it was painfully obvious that Caellia did not want company. She regretted having to intrude on Caellia but the matter of new armor could not wait any longer. The armor set Caellia was wearing was almost in tatters and she could see many places where it had been patched up.
Caellia sighed and closed her eyes, willing the tears away. “I’m not in the mood to try on new armor right now.”
“But Queen Caellia, Nalia insists that you be given the armor now.”
Caellia bit back a sharp retort. It was not Ariel’s fault that she was in a foul mood. She simply turned to face her and nodded her head in acceptance and followed Ariel to the back of the armor shop. Once there, they passed through a set of hidden doors to a special room.
“Nalia had this specially freighted to us from the finest craftsmen in Rune. The dwarves there have been making superb armors and weapons recently, as it has become a hub for travelers and traders now that they have added the docks for shipping.” She explained to Caellia. She walked to a crate that was at the back of the room and broke the seal and began to pull its contents out as she explained. “The main breast plate is made from hand worked metal, and has been bleached by the sun with an enhancement spell to a magnificent white. There is reinforced gold mithril under the breast and around the side of the hips that adds strength to the armor. The shoulder pads run from the collar down to the lower bicep to give added protection to the arms.” Ariel then said, pointing at the solid mithril breast guards, “These will help to protect your vital spots.” She moved on to the next pieces of the armor, all the while explaining what they were made from and their various purposes, unaware of how still Caellia had become.
Caellia looked at the armor in a state of shock. She’d seen armor with these qualities before, on Nathavin. This armor was of the same manufacture as his, except this particular set had been tailored for her. She allowed Ariel to help her into the delicate looking armor. The armor fit snuggly to her form from the extra muscle that Caellia had put on over the last few weeks. After a few minutes, Ariel led her to a mirror so that she could view herself in the new armor. The armor seemed to have transformed her, and she saw it wasn’t as delicate as it had appeared. She no longer looked like a frightened young Queen. However looks could be deceiving, Caellia was very much afraid.
She jumped slightly as Ariel suddenly opened a long, slender crate lying on its side, and carefully pulled the straw and hay packing away from a massive bow. The bow had two sets of stems, one set larger than the other. It appeared to be made from bone and had reddish looking horns on the hand guard with small bone spikes coming off the underside. The hand guard seemed to be made of reinforced metal plates. Over all, the bow had a slightly demonic appearance. Intrigued, Caellia strode confidently over to Ariel and pulled the bow from the other elf’s hands as Ariel began her explanation.
“This bow is very special, not only is it more powerful than most known bows, but it has a special ability that enhances your own talent to focus on your target. This allows your shots to be far more deadly than before. It is known as the Bow of Shyid, and only the most skilled warsmiths are capable of crafting it.” Ariel finished with a flourish and an air of pride. “I had this crafted for you using my own personal funds.”
The bow was immaculate. She could hardly believe how powerful it was. Caellia slowly hefted the bow into firing position, relishing the feel of its comforting weight and pulled the string back and let it go smoothly. The bow gave a satisfying thumping sound as the string was released. A faint smile curved Caellia’s lips upward for a moment before reality crashed into her as Nalia stepped into the room.
“Trionell and Eriel have come from the border of the neutral zone. Nathavin has crossed our borders and is in our lands. He is expected to be here shortly. Our forces have been moved to the westernmost gate.” She stared hard at Caellia, “Asterios would like to have a word with you.” Caellia looked to the floor and sadly nodded.
Turning back to Ariel she took the supply of arrows, and strapped them to her back. Then grabbed a Greater pouch full of magic stones from Ariel’s outstretched hand and tied the pouch to the belt around her tiny waist. At that point she made to follow Nalia when Ariel caught her arm. Turning, Caellia looked curiously at Ariel as Nalia walked a few feet ahead, unaware that Ariel had stopped Caellia.
“I don’t know what happened between you and Asterios, my Queen. But do not think that we have all turned against you. There are some of us who believe that Asterios has become too comfortable with his authority in your absence. Do not allow him to take your place.” Ariel gazed into Caellia’s troubled eyes, “You have always done what you believe is right for us, I’m not so sure he does the same.” Caellia looked at Ariel and knew the elf knew more than she was admitting to. She simply nodded to Ariel before turning to follow Nalia.

Hontas watched the elves gather their forces to the western gate while the assorted human troops moved themselves to the northern gate, and out of sight. They were keeping to their word about not interfering with the battle between the two elven races. He saw Caellia in her new armor and bow, and made to intercept her. Catching up to her, he spoke, “Queen Caellia, it is an honor to meet you.” Hontas finished with a polite bow.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t recall your name.” Caellia answered.
Hontas laughed nervously for a second, uncomfortable with having to deceive the young elf. “You’ve never met me, but I’ve heard a lot about you. My name is Hontas.” He grimaced mentally to himself, wishing he’d never met Asadar. Hontas really did not want to cause the young Queen any more grief than she was suffering already. “I only wanted to wish you the best of luck. If you require my services, I would be most willing to provide them.” By services he meant the battle planning against Asadar. Asterios had not yet allowed him inside while they were planning their strategies and time was running out. He would need to report back to Asadar soon.
“I’ll remember that Hontas. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some rather pressing matters to attend to.” Caellia brushed past him as politely as possible, ignoring the uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach.
As she entered the temple Asterios glanced at her before returning to his conversation with Nalia, who had already reached the temple while Caellia had been delayed speaking with Hontas. She ground her teeth in frustration and gripped the bow at her side tighter. The action was faintly reminiscent of Nathavin when he was agitated, although Caellia did not realize this. “You wished to see me?” She asked, fighting to keep her tone even.
“Yes. We expect Nathavin to be here shortly. Trionell said that he had a massive force assembled.”
Caellia didn’t doubt this; although she refrained from pointing out that she had warned them that Nathavin was not one to trifle with. Instead, she simply stared at Asterios for several long seconds before he spoke again.
“If his forces try to gain entrance into the village they will be restricted by the bridge.” Asterios glared at Caellia, “Do not attempt to salvage this…alliance.” He spat the word out as if it was a nasty bit of Codran. “If you do, I will not hesitate to declare you unfit. When the time comes, you will fight Lord Nathavin with every bit of skill you possess.”
Caellia nodded mutely, she understood. She also understood that Asterios had just handed her a death sentence if he expected her to fight against Nathavin. However she did not mention that. If Asterios expected her to die for her people, she would. She was slightly surprised to hear Nalia’s concerned voice.
“Asterios, perhaps Caellia should not fight Lord Nathavin. He is quite skilled, far more skilled than Caellia.”
“No, Caellia must fight him. She must convince him that this ridiculous alliance is well and truly over.”
Nalia simply nodded and said nothing further, however she was now very concerned for her friends safety.

Nathavin eyed the village from a short distance away. It was deceptively peaceful looking. The only noise in the surrounding forest was that of the local creatures, and even they seemed to be avoiding making too much noise. He struggled to regain control over his dark blood. While he’d knowingly allowed it to surge unchecked earlier, he would need to control it while he dealt with Caellia.
Kattath approached him cautiously “We are ready Lord Nathavin. Give the word and we shall strike.” She opened her gift to him and mentally recoiled, his aura was still overwhelming to her.
Nathavin merely nodded before saying resolutely “Then we go now.” He didn’t wait for Kattath to relay the message to their forces. Instead, he simply began to run to the village swiftly. The sound of his troops falling into step behind him reassured him that Kattath was doing her job and doing it well. As he neared the bridge leading to the gate of the village he slowed to a walk and finally halted at the edge of the bridge. He listened as the elves behind him stopped and waited for his decision. Nathavin then slowly began to advance up the narrow bridge, the gathered forces behind him following him up the narrow bridge. His nostrils flared in anger, they were bottlenecked on this bridge and his temper raged at the disadvantage as he struggled to contain it.
Sentinels Rayen and Starden watched him warily as he approached. Starden hefted his bow and drew back on the string while Rayen stepped forward and in front of the light elven forces. It was Rayen who addressed Nathavin. “Turn back and leave these lands at once!”
Nathavin’s eyes narrowed even more, obviously Caellia either had not informed anyone of the alliance or they had not approved of it. Or had she turned her back on it? “No! Not until I have what I’ve come for! Where is Caellia?”
“There is nothing here for you! Turn back now!” Rayen yelled back.
Nathavin openly sneered “I already gave you my answer!” He could feel the dark blood rising in his veins and struggled to keep it at bay. “Now tell me, where is Caellia?!” He raised his bow, targeting Rayen.
Starden sent a prayer to Eva, and waited for the signal to release his arrow. As Rayen gave the signal to attack, Starden released his arrow right as a darkened red bone splintered into his chest. He continued to fire his bow despite several spells of healing being unleashed upon him. It was all in vain, he never hit Nathavin and he was still firing at Nathavin when a dark elf with a beautiful blood red dagger struck him in his side. The blade slipped through a slit in his armor before it impaled his heart, instantly killing him.
Rayen had charged Nathavin only to be driven to his knees from the sheer force of the arrows. He struggled upright again and continued his charge. As he drew closer to Nathavin, he could have sworn he’d heard the dark elf curse at him and tell him to stay down before he felt another arrow drive into his chest, knocking him backward. As he lay there looking up at the sky, he could hear the sounds of the vicious battle being waged. He tried to gain his feet again but found that he couldn’t. Cool water rained upon him from a spell singer as she quickly cast her spells, bringing enormous walls of water and ice to life and propelling them at her targets. Although he couldn’t see her, Rayen could hear her casting her spells as quickly as she could.
A female blade dancer swung her swords above her head unleashing her magic as she looked around for a target. Her sharp eyes spied a heavily armored knight in a greenish black set of armor adorned with a cross on the breast plate, which looked as if it would be better suited on a dark elf male. She made her way to him, and thrust both her blades in an upward arching thrust at the light elf, missing him by only a few scant inches.
Her opponent, a temple knight, looked at the female dual user and raised his shield. He raked his gaze appreciatively down her form and back up to her face, “Are you as good a fighter as you look?” He watched as her face bunched in anger, his verbal barb had hit the mark. He felt the reassuring presence of his spirit orb as it floated above his shoulder. Raising his sword and shield, he nodded his head at the woman and accepted her challenge.
