Chapter 4
“Hello yourself,” muttered Patty darkly. She was quite upset
at being woken up. While she had never liked taking naps when she was younger,
one thing remained; she hated to be woken up before she wanted to be. Yawning
and rubbing her eyes, she struggled to find the energy to sit up. Throwing a
glance at Nina, she noticed that the young woman seemed depressed, if not a
little disappointed to see Patty. Patty decided it was probably the latter. She
had led the group of heroes on a wild chase across the world, not once but
twice. Then they had had to save her at Gate, were she had finally learned the
truth; she was Ryu’s younger sister. Talk about a shock.
Sighing, Patty turned so that she was facing the older girl
directly, her feet hanging off the side of the bed. “So what brings you
crashing into my room like the devil is after you?” she asked. “Why are you
even here? I thought you would have returned to Windia by now.”
Nina stiffened a little at the last part of the question. “I
am not really sure I want to go home… quite yet.” Nina murmured. “Right now,
there is something more important at hand.” She lifted her face and looked
straight into Patty’s eyes. “Ryu is missing.”
Patty stared for a moment. Then to Nina’s utter shock, Patty
lay back down and pulled the covers back up to her chin. “Good night,” she
stated.
The blonde was totally thrown. “Did you not hear me?” she
asked. “I said that…”
“Ryu is missing.” Finished Patty. “Did you stop to think
that maybe he just wanted to get away from all the fame and fans for awhile? I
mean, to have to have all those people around you your every waking moment; I
think he deserves a break.” She sat back up and looked at the princess, her
expression neutral. “Besides, I think if he stayed cooped up in that town,
after traveling the entire world, it would drive him insane. I know it would to
me.” She
added.
“But,” Nina whispered. “He did not even leave a note, nor
did he even say good bye to anyone. What if he is hurt?”
“Ryu’s fine,” Patty assured her. Nina’s eyes opened in
question. “I know because he was here just a couple of hours ago.”
~Flashback~
Ryu trudged up the stairs in the inn, barely able to lift
his feet high enough to get on the next step. He was apparently more tired then
he thought, his body practically singing avemaria in high soprano. He finally
got to his room, and pushed open the door.
What he wasn’t expecting was a guest. Let alone his own
sister.
Patty was standing at the dresser, her back turned towards
him. But he could tell it was her regardless; who else had dragon wings
sticking out from their back? She was rummaging through the drawers, muttering
to herself. Something about “low-quality” and “buncha junk”. It didn’t take
much to know what she was up to.
“Still stealing, sis?” Ryu asked loudly. The girl jumped and
spun with a squeak, startled that she had been caught. “I thought that you
promised not to steal anymore. Or were you just telling me that to make me
happy?” he continued.
“Ryu!” Patty exclaimed. “Don’t scare me like that!” her face
quickly formed a scowl. “And I’m not ‘stealing’! I’m removing things that they
don’t need anymore so that way I can help myself.”
“I think you’ve ‘helped’ yourself’ to more then enough
today,” responded the girl’s brother. “Put everything back.”
The young thief grudgingly obliged, putting back several
small gaudy rings and necklaces. “What are you doing here any ways?” she asked,
now putting some rather ugly bracelets in the open drawer. “This is pretty far
away from Gate, you know.”
Ryu let out a soft sigh. “I had more. I’m trying to get away
from them all.”
Patty turned and stared at him. “More nightmares?”
When they had first started up, the nightmares were just a
few seconds long. As they got progressively worse, Ryu had to tell somebody. He
hadn’t wanted to tell any of his comrades, in case they got worried. They had
been through enough. He hadn’t even planned on telling his sister, but when she
had awoken him from one of his night episodes, she had persuaded him - as well
as threatened him - to tell her everything. Since then, Ryu had been sending
her letters every week, telling his younger sibling everything. No matter where
she went, the letters always managed to find her.
Patty sighed as she closed the dresser drawer and turned
around fully. “How bad?” she asked simply. Ryu just looked at the ground and
didn’t say anything. With a slight shake of her head, Patty grabbed his hand
and led him over to the table in the middle of the room. She sat him in one
chair, and then took the one across from him. “Start talking.”
And talk he did. For an entire hour, he described everything
in his dream. How he could smell the blood, and feel the pain from the
injuries, even though they were just dreams. He was stopped every now and then
when his sis asked a question. After answering, he would continue. When he
finally finished, Patty sat there, her elbows on the table with her hands
folded. She rested her chin on her hands, her eyes closed as she absorbed the
information she had been given. After awhile, she opened her eyes and looked at
her brother closely. What she was about to tell him wasn’t going to make him
happy…
~End of flashback~
“So what did you tell him?” Nina pressed, now sitting in the
exact same spot Ryu had only hours before. She had listened to the young dragon
girl’s story without interrupting, but she could only be patient for so long.
Patty paused before answering. “I assume you remember the
town of Tunlan,
right?” She paused before getting a nod from the princess. “They’ve been having
some problems lately. Children have been disappearing in the night, but the
doors are all locked, and the windows shut tight. What’s more, the children are
all young. The oldest one that’s gone missing to date, according to my info, is
about 7.” Patty leaned forward and rubbed her eyes. Now came the fun part. “The
kidnappings have been going on for about a month. Word hasn’t really spread,
because of two reasons.”
Nina swallowed a hard lump in her throat. She had a bad
feeling about this, but she needed to know. “What are those reasons?” she
finally managed to ask.
Patty lifted up her head, but did not look Nina in the eye.
“The first is its location,” she explained. “Tunlan is in the middle of the
sea, and because they speak with music, they don’t get a lot of travelers. So
they’re pretty remote. The second is much worse.” Patty finally made eye
contact. “In the second week of the kidnapping, one of the townsmen managed to
catch a glimpse of the kidnapper. He didn’t see how they broke into the houses,
but it was still a big step. The only problem was that he had been frightened
so badly, he was about half-mad. He said that the guy’s skin seemed to pulsate,
and was dripping slime. Then comes the really bad news.”
“It gets worse?” Nina asked in disbelief. Skin pulsating-no,
it couldn’t be. There was no way. But all her hope was crushed with Patty’s
next words.
“The symbols on his clothes were that of the St. Eva
Church.”
Ryu stood on the bow of the ship, his cloak billowing
fiercely in the strong breeze. Just seconds after hearing the story from his
sister, he had rushed out of the city and transformed into one of his dragon
forms. He had needed to move fast, and so he needed wings. The trip to Hometown
had taken him about an hour. Then he had to wait another hour and a half for
the next boat to Tunlan. He could have flown easily, but his body was still
tired, and he didn’t want to risk it, instead opting to sleep on the boat. But
soon after the journey had started the wind had picked up, rocking the boat and
making it very hard to sleep. So now he waited, and thought. If St. Eva was indeed responsible, he wondered what their
game was. There was no way that they didn’t know about their “God’s” death, the
whole world knew. And there was also no way that people were going to return to
the dead church anyways…right? Ryu sighed for what seemed like the thousandth
time that day, as he remembered something that he had learned from his father.
If people didn’t have something to believe in, even a destiny of oblivion, they
would sometimes do things they normally wouldn’t. And that anything could
become an addiction; even faith in one’s religion. Ryu silently hoped that it
was just a few crazed human zealots. That would make things so much easier.
He was jerked out of his thoughts when he heard the lookout
shout “Land ho!” from the crows nest. Ryu looked out to the horizon and saw the
Land of Music, Tunlan. It was time to get ready…
As soon as the boat was next to the dock, Ryu jumped over
the side of the ship, landing on the wooden planks with a heavy Thud. As soon as he regained his
balance, he headed straight for the queen’s castle. He pushed through the
crowd, catching snippets of conversation mixed with the musical notes of the
city’s citizenry. Before long, he reached the oak doors of the castle. Ryu
noticed the amount of guards had increased, which was to be expected in such
times. He walked up to one of the soldiers, pulling out a small flute. After
using the flute to tell the guard who he was, Ryu was led into a waiting room before
one of the maids went to find the queen. As he waited, Ryu looked over his
surroundings.
The place was a gigantic mix of pink and gold. The carpet
was so thick that his feet actually sank into the material a bit. The chairs
were far too plushy for his taste, and the pillows were just as bad, with
endless lace embroidered around the edges of the ugly pink things. The only
thing that he thought was decent was the paintings of the various instruments
on the walls, but even those were ruined by the grossly over-large frames.
Ryu heard the sound of a door opening behind him, and turned
to see the queen being led in by a maid. Ryu noticed that she had put on a
little wait, but considering how anorexic she had looked after her little “fat”
time, it was an improvement. Her brown hair flowed down to the middle of her
back, her crown holding her bangs back out of her face. She had on a soft pink
dress that was surprisingly very simple, but what caught Ryu’s eye was how very
tired she looked. He could even see how her green eyes were filled with a false
perkiness, but decided not to point it out. He merely held out his hand and
took hold of the queen’s. “Your Majesty
Queen Nartinka,” he said. “A pleasure to see you once more.”
The queen shook his hand briefly before sitting herself down
in the Plushy Seat of Ugliness, as Ryu had silently dubbed it. “Ryu. To what
pleasure do we owe this visit?”
“I’m afraid it’s not pleasure that brings me here, Milady,”
Ryu whispered. “But rather, your recent… trouble.”
Nartinka let out a soft grunt. “So you’ve heard.” She stated
more then asked. Ryu gave a brief nod. The queen bent forward and rested her
forehead in her hands. “It’s gotten really bad Ryu. I’ve even ordered that the
whole city speak the Common tongue, so that we might get more information
easier. Hence, why I’m talking to you without any sort of music.” She added.
“Have you found out anything?” Ryu asked. “Surely, by now,
something new has come up. It has been a month, correct?”
“The only thing that’s come up come up in the last month is
the number of the missing,” the queen muttered darkly. “To date, there are 27
missing children.”
“That many?!” Ryu exclaimed shocked. “That’s too many for a
small group! So where not dealing with a bunch of crazed religious nuts?”
“No,” Nartinka said simply. “We’ve confirmed that the
kidnappers are, indeed, demons. And we know where they are. But all rescue
groups have been killed before they could even get inside the hideout.”
Ryu started cursing in his head, every word he could think of,
twice. Then he started thinking. This wasn’t at all what he wanted to do. He
had just wanted to find a nice quiet spot, away from the rest of the world,
where he could disappear quietly. But he couldn’t just leave a problem like
this alone. He had been the one to destroy the religion of St. Eva, which meant
that this group of demons was also his to deal with.
And what if they have
something to do with the nightmares?
Choice made. Ryu crossed his arms, and prepared himself to
memorize everything he heard. Looking at the queen, he made his decision known.
“Tell me where they are at, and all other information you might have.”
