By now, most people had figured out their living accomodations. Much more spacious that two people could ever really require. Seven floors above ground, and three below. The first floor was generally a great foyer, with circular stairs leading up past an large, elegant den, complete with cracking fire. Heading further up, one could take note of the translucent servants bustling in the kitchen beyond the dining room. As the keep soared upward, a visitor would pass the aforementioned communications room and the personal armory of the tower lord and her champion, his bedroom, and hers. There was also a tactics room - complete with extensive mapping supplies and panoramic view over the field below, and the mysterious seventh floor.
A few people had spent some time examining the very spire of the tower. Some had disregarded it after a look. Yet none could fathom its purpose. Walled stone (as were all the rooms) and shot with streaks of red, black, and white, it contained no objects. However, if the chosen ten could have compared their respective spires, they would have discovered that some peculiar iridescence lit half of the rooms, Rikku's more brightly than the rest, while the other half remained dark. A logical leap may have connected the magnitude of the glow to the number of vanquished enemies, but such understanding was yet to come.
Perhaps even more peculiarly - depending on one's interests - were the three floors below ground, the ornaments of which would have made the Spanish Inquisition blush with envy. None there, even those with vast exposure to the subject, had ever seen such a complete dungeon. More than one person inquired what sort of benevolent god created so many instruments of torture.
It had been an overlong day. There was only the faintest glimmer of light outside. Most people had since retired. Some, however, were not quite so domicile. In fact, some could say they may have been downright restless. Yuffie and Rikku, having long since had to stop what they termed 'important debates', which their respective champions might have termed 'incessant pestering', had even called it a night. Yes, it was that late. However, two figures still brooded over a fire, waiting.
Day 2: The red moon is rising.
Former comrades, and now allied once again - if only temporarily, Nel, Maria, Albel, and Fayt stood under a sky beginning to show the faintest hue of red. "I wonder if we'll see white again next." "Maybe the moon will change colour randomly." "For that matter, do we even know how many hours have passed?" Conversation abruptly stopped as Nel, former Crimson Blade, raised her hand. "It's time." Nods.
It should be noted at this point that each keep was surrounded by a stone wall. Perhaps twelve feet high, and maybe four thick. Certainly higher than Maria's spaceships could hover (they rarely managed to get more than a foot off the ground), but that didn't really matter. Perhaps more importantly, the gap in each wall was perhaps twenty feet long, and led directly to the courtyard, wherein Yuna's Ronso and Rinoa's miniature T-Rexaur's had been left in fairly orderly formation, unscathed by the previous day's events.
It was simply their bad luck they lived next door to Nel and Maria, respectively. Nel gestured for Fayt to drive a few spaceships into the midst of of Yuna's troops. The...sleeping? resting? hibernating? T-Rexaurs woke as laser fire tore into their ranks, leaving scars. As they instinctively charged, Fayt withdrew his forces to the gate - to protect a line of Nel's troops, who unemotionally hurled bullets of fire and daggers of ice into the approaching ranks.
Not far away, a similar situation was taking place in Yuna's courtyard. Maria and Albel observed as the alien spacecraft held a defensive pose against the spear-wielding Ronso, jostling each other in an attempt to find space to bring their spears to bear. Albel smiled contentendly, almost purring. "You know, this might be easier than we thought", running a black steel claw through Maria's hair. She didn't turn. "It's much too early for confidence."
Six stories above, a gunslinging brunette and a raven-haired teen woke almost simultaneously to the sound of battle. Tidus's yells echoed from the window below Yuna, trying to organize their forces for a concerted rush at the wall, and as Squall burst out into the main courtyard, gunblade drawn, all four saw the same thing: Spaceships and gish, side-by-side, withdrawing into the night.
Day 2: The red moon is cresting.
By now, the news of the nighttime raid had been spread around. Casualties had been assessed. 62 T-Rexaurs were missing. A further 44 Ronso warriors had fallen in battle. An inspection of the ranks of the mysterious attackers would have revealed 26 destroyed spacecraft and 18 dead magic-throwers. Many pairs were reconsidering their defenses - everyone had taken the time to inspect their walls and erect some defenses at the gap. Sleeping arrangements had been reassessed.
Nightfall was coming. Of course, 'nightfall' was a relative term. Even at mid-noon, it would've been difficult to read a book outdoors, and at midnight, there was only a faint glow, with visibility of only a few hundred feet.
Day 2: The red moon is fading.
Tellingly, even though it was well past the time for sleeping, lights burned from a number of windows in most of the bastions. Anyone could have told you that a healthy dose of fear had creeped into most everyone. Warriors crouched in courtyards as would-be deities peered out windows into the black night.
"Goddamnit Yuffie, do it yourself! Look, everyone out there is waiting for anyone to try and make a move. Not tonight, already!" Cid was frustrated. Of course, that's what made it all the better when they reconciled. The argument had been going on for some time. Yuffie sighed "Cid...look, we're not going to win just sitting here. I'm sure there's some reward for being aggressive? How else do you explain that glow upstairs that intensified after our second engagement?"
Cid stalked off to look out the window to the empty plain below. His companion stole up behind him, leaning on him, pressing him up against the warm glass. Even at what would be considered night, it never dropped below 25 (celsius), and midday would be consistently in the high thirties. A soft breeze blew outside as she mouthed the words, just letting them reach his waiting ear: "I'll let you do you-know what...". She stepped back, clasping her hands in front of her lithe form, waiting, giggling.
Cid sighed, turning from the window, reaching for his spear. "You are too cruel to an old man." Not ten minutes later, Cid peeked out from behind the portcullis Yuffie had erected earlier in the day. Columns of ninja, armed with dagger and boomerang, stood silently behind him. Previous reconnaissance had decided then stone golems next door were too much of a threat, and Yuna to the other side wouldn't be taking any chances. Making a beeline to the next closest castle, inhabited by an unrecognized green-haired woman, over a hundred ninja slipped out into the faint red night.
"They come, Femme!" "I know, Copain. As we rehearsed. Quickly." The female aviator stared down into her courtyard, in which she had erected what looked like a bunch of disorganized walls of perhaps three feet high. "...I trust you, Copain." He gave a cheery wave, disappearing down the stairs. She sipped her tea, waiting, keeping a close eye as her precise formations of seemingly-ancient biplane aircraft floated above the jumble of stonemasonry.
Not far away, other faces watched the scene unfolding with great interest. As the lead elements of Yuffie's forces forced open the iron gate leading to Femme's waiting compound, preparations were elsewhere underfoot.
