Nessa rolled over and opened her eyes, sighing as she remembered that she had dismissed Karasae. She dragged herself out of bed and made herself take a shower. She somehow felt sticky, as if covered with dried sweat. She hung her head, letting the water flow over her. Her dark locks hung in her face. She closed her eyes and put one hand on the wall in front of her, trying to clear her head.
A little odd considering that I took a shower before bed...
A smirk graced her lips as she remembered what had happened right before she went to sleep. The cool water was beginning to wake her up. She looked over her body, still seeing faint pink lines where her worst injuries had been. Checking carefully by applying light pressure to various parts of herself that she could remember had been in pain, she concluded that she was probably okay to fight again. After stepping out of the shower and getting dressed, she reached for her bag of souls. She turned a soul shard over in her hands a few times, but eventually put it back, electing to let the demon rest some more. Seeing the clock on the wall, she winced. It was already early afternoon. She decided to go for a short walk and get some fresh air, and perhaps show that she was still alive. Upon opening the door, she saw two guards.
"Commander! Captain Kanas will want to hear of your recovery."
"Did he order you to stand watch at my door?"
"Yes, commander, after the second day."
"The what?! How long has it been?"
"This is the fourth day since your return to Silvermoon, commander. If I may make a suggestion..."
"You may."
"Belestra wanted to see you when you awoke. It might be prudent-"
"Absolutely not. That harpy thinks she is my commanding officer. I will report to Kanas at once."
"Of course, commander."
She went back inside and closed the door, deciding to arm herself with a traditional Sin'dorei staff when facing Kanas. Karasae would be most unwelcome in that meeting, and would have to wait for Nessa's return. Returning outside, she locked the door and walked confidently to her meeting. The pain in her leg was gone, and she was very determined to show that she did not need to be held back by a priest of all things. A guard appeared on either side of her, keeping up with her brisk pace.
"Commander Felwhisper, captain Kanas has put out the order to all city guards that you should be escorted to his office once you are well enough to see him."
"I am."
"Of course. Please come with us."
Flanked by the guards, she made her way to her commanding officer's place of business. They departed as soon as she entered the doorway. He stood up from his desk to greet her.
"Nessa, I understand your actions as of late have surpassed what we had expected to need you to do. And I must congratulate you on your promotion. In the field, no less. The orcs are rather difficult brutes to please. You must have been positively drenched in blood. Have you recovered from your injuries?"
"I have, captain."
"Good. That Belestra is a right little bitch, and I have no intention of keeping you out of the line of duty for a full week. Your promotion ceremony is to be held by the taunka, as I'm sure you're aware. I haven't a clue what constitutes a 'ceremony' for those... people... but you are to wear your official Silvermoon commander's regalia." He opened a drawer of his desk and removed a small package, coming around to hand it to her. "I will send word of your recovery to Northrend immediately, which means that you will need to leave today. You make us proud with your service to the horde, commander. Dismissed."
"Farewell, captain."
She turned and left immediately. She had wanted to ask much of him, but knew better than to continue speaking once dismissed by a superior officer. Upon arriving home, she dismissed the guards at her door. Once inside, the first thing she did was to summon Karasae. Without so much as a word or a moment's hesitation, she kissed the demon deeply, holding her. Finally pulling away, she smiled and spoke.
"I am to leave today for my promotion ceremony."
"I'm glad you're feeling better. What's that package?"
"Ah yes, this." She opened the package carefully, revealing an elaborate robe. It was red and gold, baring a large, detailed Icon of Blood on both the front and back. The sleeves were long, featuring a black fold near the ends, which was also punctuated by gold trim. A similar, larger fold appeared along the bottom of the robe. She grinned as she held it up. "You need to help me with this."
Karasae's eyes widened as she looked over the robe. "Clearly not combat gear. I'm sure you'll look gorgeous in it, my love." The demon helped Nessa get undressed first, carefully looking over her body for any trace of the injuries. "You were out for a long time. Do you feel better?"
"Yes, very much so. And yourself?"
Taking the robe from Nessa, Karasae helped her slip into it, and began fastening the complex collection of straps. "I had a rare chance to take a look around my home world. Not nearly enough submissive blood elves, if you ask me." Seeing Nessa blush, she kissed the woman on the cheek and added, "And now you match your robe perfectly."
Once Karasae had finished the adjustment of the straps, Nessa looked at herself in the mirror from a couple of different angles. "How do I look?"
"Like a goddess."
"You're very sweet today, Karasae. I'm ready to leave. Let's find a mage and go through Dalaran; the zeppelin doesn't exactly inspire faith in me."
"I'll take care of that. A few silver so I can frighten a child into doing my bidding?"
Nessa laughed, handing the demon a few coins. Karasae went outside alone, looking around. There were some children playing nearby. As she approached the group, a couple of them saw her and fled. One who had his back turned to the demon turned slowly, looking up in fear.
"Little boy, would you like to make a few silver? I need a mage sent to commander Felwhisper's home."
The child brightened up at the offer of money, agreeing quickly. Karasae handed him the coins and he sprinted off toward Wayfarer's Rest. Karasae returned to Nessa, and a few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. A mage stood on the other side, taking a bow as the door was opened.
"Anandor Sunstrider at your service, milady. It is my understanding that you need quick passage to Dalaran."
"Indeed. Some gold for your trouble, brother." Nessa handed the man a few gold coins. He placed them in a small pouch without checking the amount.
"I won't waste your time any further." He began channeling the spell. "Your attire suggests that you have somewhere very important to be. Safe travels, commander."
Once the portal was up, Nessa and Karasae stepped through, appearing in Dalaran. Nessa walked gracefully toward the flight master, doing her best to carry herself in a manner that was expected of her. The dress robes did turn a few heads, but in general, the area was far too busy to notice a warlock and her minion. The flight to Dragonblight was thankfully short, as she had to do it alone. The wyverns commonly used by the Horde were no less easy to scare than the Dragonhawks used by Silvermoon. She was met at Agmar's Hammer by several taunka, including Roanauk Icemist.
"Commander Felwhisper," Roanauk began, "I understand you were instrumental in helping our people. Though I know little about the traditions of your people, it would be my honor to present you with your new rank."
"The honor is mine, high chieftain."
She looked around, noting the clarity with which he spoke. Unlike most of his people, he had picked up Orcish very quickly, much more quickly than she had when the blood elves had joined the Horde. The merchant area had temporarily been cleared out for the ceremony.
"This way, commander."
Roanauk gestured toward the area they had prepared. Nessa sensed a thankfully short ceremony. Her own people would have had her on a stage for hours; the orcs would have none of that. As she made her way to the center, taunka gathered around her in a circle. Their high chieftain stood next to her, and spoke loudly to get their attention.
"Brothers and sisters! This day, we honor a blood elf who helped our people in their time of greatest need. The lone survivor of a daring assault on Naxxanar! Were it not for her, we would have lost many more to the fall of Taunka'le. While many fled for their lives, or were crushed by the waves of undead, she stood firm and escorted unarmed civilians to safety. Of many who came to Northrend, she is one of the few who still draws breath. A diplomat of the Cenaurion Circle, a veteran of the Wrathgate, and now, a commanding officer of the Horde! Nessa Felwhisper, we salute you this day, and look forward to fighting at your side once more!" He retrieved a sash and draped it over the warlock, adding in heavily accented, though grammatically correct Thalassian. "The sun guides us."
A cheer erupted from the crowd. Nessa raised her eyebrows, her mouth opening a little in surprise at the taunka's use of her native language. Overlord Agmar pushed through the crowd, standing on Nessa's other side. "We need you to travel to a taunka refugee outpost and help organize the troops. Minimize your time there, commander. Find someone competent, and name them as your replacement in the morning. As much as possible, the taunka should be lead by one of their own, especially now."
Nessa nodded and was escorted out of the crowd. As Agmar described the location, she realized it was the same place she had taken survivors before. Before mounting her wolf, she summoned Karasae. She elected to leave the base before they began to exchange words.
"Nightfall will soon be upon us, and I need to organize the taunka at their refugee camp."
"How long will we be in Northrend?"
Nessa laughed uneasily before replying, "Just tonight. After that, I will need to go back to Silvermoon. Something about paladins planning a major assault in Icecrown."
"Anything I can do?"
"Stand next to me and look pretty. It might not help with my duties much, but it will make me a lot happier."
Karasae giggled into her hand as they approached the camp. Immediately, Nessa saw why they needed a commander there. The taunka were disorganized. Some of them were just milling about, some were fishing in the nearby river, some were standing guard - though not in any sort of respectable formation - and still others were trying to rebuild. They had other soldiers of the horde to help stand guard, but none of them had authority to be giving orders. Stepping off her wolf, she immediately bellowed out.
"Alright ladies, drop whatever it is you're doing and fall in line." She glared at a group off to the side that seemed to be hesitating. "Unless you don't speak Orcish, you better be getting in formation this fucking second."
They grumbled, but they joined the line. The other Horde guards moved to join the line, but she shook her head at them and they resumed their guard posts. She walked down the line, inspecting the ranks. Everyone seemed to be in good condition, and their stance was decent. It was a small group, as many of the warriors had been called away to Agmar's Hammer. Even the women seemed very muscular, though noticeably smaller built. She walked back to a position in front, to address them all again.
"Those of you with combat experience, step forward." Only two stepped forward. "Report to the orcs or trolls standing guard and arm yourselves, then report to Agmar's Hammer. Those of you with knowledge in first aid or healing, step forward." This time, there was no response. She blinked in surprise, but a single taunka spoke up.
"Commander, forgive me for speaking out of turn. We have but one healer, and she is currently in a tent, tending to the wounded."
"Very well. Those of you capable of building and repairing structures, step forward." This time, about half of them stepped forward. "Organize yourselves into three groups. One will determine the viability of material in the surrounding area, one will survey the ground for suitable construction, and one will repair what you have already, starting with the medical tent. Make it warm - the last thing the injured need is frostbite. I will not be holding your hand through this. You are not peons. The rest of you are tasked with hunting and gathering. Make sure to obtain foods that can be stored long term and sent off with your brothers and sisters being called into combat. Dismissed!"
She walked around, looking at the ones working on construction related assignments. They had quickly picked their own leaders, just as she had hoped. She entered the medical tent, asking Karasae to remain outside to avoid frightening the injured. The lone healer was clearly stressed out, and lacking sleep. More than a dozen sick and wounded laid on blankets on the ground as she desperately tried to keep them alive. Nessa spoke calmly, attempting to avoid imposing rank.
"Healer, is there anything we can do to improve this situation?"
"Yes commander... this floor... or no floor. They're freezing."
"Say no more; I will have it dealt with immediately." As she exited the tent, she immediately addressed the taunka in charge of the closest construction group. "They need a proper floor inside the healing tent - something warm."
"I don't know what we can do, commander. The animals in this area are mostly plagued. We're using what furs and skins we can, but there's barely anything to work with."
"The area around Agmar's Hammer has many bears that escaped infection."
"We have not yet been that far east. There is still hope... I will organize a hunting party at once!"
"This is an emergency to aid the sick and wounded, not an expedition. Get back here by nightfall, taunka. You -do not- want to leave the safety of your camp for long at night."
"Understood, commander."
Nessa continued to make her rounds until it began to get dark. As the sun went down, she ordered everyone back to the camp and into formation. She noticed an obviously smaller number than before.
"Who can tell me who is missing from this lineup?"
"Turok Stormhorn and his team have still not returned from gathering bear hides for the medical tent, commander."
Nessa looked off toward Agmar's Hammer briefly before turning back to the taunka in front of her.
"I see. Very well, then. All of you, dismissed."
Nessa and Karasae waited for about an hour before there was any sign of the team. Turok had another taunka slung over his shoulder, while the rest were carrying stacks of furs, meat, and bones. He handed the wounded taunka over to an approaching guard before addressing Nessa.
"Commander."
"I assume you have an explanation for disobeying orders?"
"I do, commander. We have to hunt very selectively, as many of the bears travel with their cubs. Since they are our closest supply of untainted furs and meat, we cannot afford to harm the population. Also, heat has a habit of escaping through wherever it can. If we did not have sufficient furs to cover every gap in the medical tent, it would not be very useful."
"And your injured friend?"
"We had to fend off a scourge attack on the way back here."
"Very well, Turok, but remember this: hunting parties are ill equipped to fight scourge, as I'm sure you noticed. You do no one any good dead. If I am to place you in charge of this camp when I leave, I need to know that I'm not sending all of these taunka to their deaths."
"I will... consider that."
"Dismissed."
A small, temporary tent had been prepared for Nessa. She was not at liberty to take a proper shower, but she could heat up water and wipe herself down with a damp cloth. She had warmth, something soft to sleep on, and she had Karasae. It was enough. The demon helped her clean up after folding the ceremonial robes neatly. They spoke quietly in Demonic as Karasae wiped Nessa's naked body down with the warm cloth.
"Do you really think he's the best choice to lead this outpost, Nessa?"
"No. I wanted to put a soldier in charge, but I have my orders too. Everyone who can fight is needed elsewhere. They can only spare a few guards."
"And how are you holding up?"
"I fear for all of us. We lost too many good soldiers at the Wrathgate. As much as I hate to say it, we can't afford to be fighting the Alliance right now. Even so, they are more eager to go to war than they have been in a long time. Arthas may have already won."
"Nothing is decided until you give up."
Nessa closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She suddenly turned to face the demon, kissing her deeply. "You're touching me all over..."
"Let's get you dried off and lay you down. I feel like you need a gentle touch."
Karasae carefully dried the elf with another cloth, and got her to lay on a fur on the ground. She climbed on top of the woman, kissing her deeply. Nessa wrapped her arms around the demon as they kissed. Wings enveloped Nessa as they embraced, and for the first time in entirely too long, she was exactly where she wanted to be. Karasae's hands found their way around Nessa's body, the fingertips lightly brushing against her most sensitive areas. She writhed and moaned as the demon's hands gently cupped her breasts, carefully playing with her nipples.
"I want you to be naked too." Nessa breathed.
Karasae straddled Nessa's hips, removing her top. She leaned back over the elf, who helped her remove the skimpy bottom. The elf immediately ran her fingers up Karasae's inner thigh, resting them on her slit. Karasae gasped, biting her lip from the sudden touch.
"I want you so bad," Nessa said under her breath, "Take me."
The demon leaned over and kissed Nessa deeply, her hand finding the woman's wetness. The two moaned into each other's mouths as their actions mirrored. Their fingers moved in circular motions, each woman stimulating the clit of her lover. They rocked their hips and pressed on the fingers that stimulated them, moaning more frantically, but attempting to keep the noise down. Climaxing together, warlock and demon shut their eyes, locked in their intimate embrace. Nessa slid a finger inside Karasae, then two. Not to be outdone, the demon responded in kind, pumping her fingers in and out of Nessa's pussy. With no rest from the previous climax, they were soon grinding and coming for each other once more. Nessa stopped, trying to catch her breath, but did not immediately withdraw her fingers. Karasae took this as her queue, and laid atop her summoner, looking deep into her eyes.
"I love you so much, Nessa."
"I love you too, Karasae."
"Please don't worry. Get some sleep, and we'll figure out the next step tomorrow."
"Is something troubling you? I sense something is wrong."
"No, nothing. I will stay with you tonight while you sleep."
The demon held her close, and Nessa soon fell asleep. But Karasae had lied in answering the last question. She smelled someone outside the tent. Once she was certain that Nessa had fallen asleep, she got dressed and ventured out. A taunka was nearby, clearly listening in."
A demon and her warlock... you know what this means."
"You don't seriously think you're going to live to tell what you heard."
"I scream, the guards come running. You've already lost, demon."
With a quick flick of her wrist, Karasae wrapped her whip around the woman's neck. A burst of shadow energy engulfed the weapon, sending the taunka to her knees. She tried desperately to scream and pull the whip off of her neck, but it was no use.
"I'll kill your entire pathetic race if I have to. No one will ever take her from me."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nessa prepared to leave the camp, having already appointed Turok as the leader of the encampment. Before she could mount up, an alarmed taunka came running toward her, shouting.
"Commander! We found Halfa's body downstream!"
Two other tauren carried the woman's body and laid it on the ground. Nessa took a look, immediately recognizing the burns on her neck.
"Was this really necessary?" she asked in Demonic.
"She heard us, and said she would talk."
Nessa shook her head and looked up at the taunka gathered around.
"My demon confirms that it's shadow magic, but not demonic. Clearly, she was attacked by scourge. This is why I insisted that no one leave the safety of the camp at night."
"But why, commander? Why would she risk leaving?"
"Was she a herbalist?"
"Of course, but-"
"Lichbloom is beautiful at night. Even I am tempted at times."
The taunka asking questions knelt and wept over the woman's corpse. Nessa stood back up, looking to Turok. "Make sure this never happens again. Everyone must know the dangers."
"Of course, commander."
Nessa mounted up quickly, riding off to make a report to Agmar before returning to Silvermoon. In her home city, she was told that she would need to wait a few days before the paladins were ready for her. The typical blood elf red tape was in play here, but it was for the best. She needed a break, one where she wasn't injured. At home, she made her displeasure with Karasae's lie known.
"I'm sorry, Nessa. I just... if you die, I'll have nothing left. You're everything to me, and I'll do anything to protect you."
"And you think I would have just let her go? Burn down an orphanage for all I care! But don't lie to me. I trust you with my life, my heart, and my soul, Karasae."
"I said I'm sorry! What do you want me to do?" Karasae began sobbing, "I can't take it back! I can't go back and make it not happen! Just tell me what to do, Nessa!"
Nessa hesitated for a moment, finally beckoning the demon over. "Come here, Karasae. It's okay." The demon came over to her summoner, crying on the woman's bosom. Nessa held her close, speaking softly. "I need you more than anything, and I need to know that I can trust you. Don't ever lie to me, Karasae. There's no reason for it." Karasae nodded, sniffling. "I know we've been at odds a lot lately, but we have time to work everything out now. Just know that no matter what happens, I'll never let you go. I swear it."
