Chp 4
Alex stepped onto the ledge of an apartment complex and stared down at the figures of Cole and Trish standing in the middle of the street. Honestly, there were vehicles driving around in this area. Did they want to end up beneath the tires of a car? Not that Cole needed to worry, but Trish should have had more common sense.
Claws clutching the Reaper who had made his final mistake, Alex jumped off the roof and landed on the sidewalk. The sound and quake of him hitting concrete made Cole whirl, and his arm shot up and zapped to life with electricity. Trish staggered back, preparing to flee. Alex smiled at Cole, silently radiating arrogance with a side of adoration as he walked toward his fellow super-powered man.
“Jesus Christ, warn me next time.” Cole let his power disperse. His eyes were drawn to the body still bleeding out, dangling from Alex’s transformed arm.
“You should reassure her.” Alex flexed his hand, letting the claws pull from the flesh and allow the body to drop, dead, to the concrete.
Cole looked to Trish, who was still unsure if it was safe, “It’s alright. He’s a friend.”
Alex let his arm return to normal and he extended it in offer as Trish approached cautiously. Cole slapped his hand away and told him to knock it off.
“I was just being polite.”
“Trish, this is Alex.”
“He’s… different.” Trish rubbed her arm, unsure what to make of a man who was able to sprout claws from his fingers.
Alex held up Cole’s phone and extended it to him, “I found this on our late friend here.”
“So you killed him?”
“He ran away.”
“Your point?” Cole took his phone and looked at his half a dozen missed calls, sighing.
“Instincts. He shouldn’t have run.”
Cole shook his head.
“What?” Alex looked at Trish discretely before refocusing on Cole, “I thought my efforts would at least get some form of appreciation. I could have let him keep it.”
“You know what? Fine. Thank you. Is that better?”
“Why you gotta be such a bitch?” Alex was messing with him, and Cole caught on.
“Hey,” Cole shoved him, but this time he smiled, “I don’t need that from you.”
“Cole,” Trish regained their attention, “are you fighting people like Alex?”
Cole wasn’t sure he understood what she was asking, but Alex seemed to catch her drift, and so answered for him.
“I’m an outsider. My abilities were not caused by events here in your city. But if Cole did fight people like me… I’m sure he’d find the challenge would be weighed unfairly against him.”
Cole clipped his phone to the strap of his backpack, “I don’t care to find out.”
“It would be interesting to see how long you lasted.”
Cole sent a mild glare at Alex, not appreciating the suggestive tone his last words held. He inhaled and exhaled. Slowly. But it wasn’t enough to hold him back.
“Funny. Last I remember you were the one having trouble hanging in there.”
Alex laughed darkly, claws growing from every digit as he leaned over Cole in a threatening but playful manner, “We could have a rematch.” The tips of the claws brushed Cole’s jacket.
Trish interjected, “There are people here. The two of you fighting, even if it’s not serious, could get someone hurt.”
“Trish is right. This really isn’t the place for a rematch.”
Alex’s hands turned normal and he backed off, “We can always work a location out after you’re done here.”
“I’ve gotta go.” Cole was receiving an incoming call from Moya. He sent a farewell nod to Trish and hurried toward a building. Alex watched with predatory attraction, unashamed of his blatant admiration of Cole’s backside. Trish was about to leave after watching Cole scale half the apartment complex, but she did a double take when her eyes caught sight of Alex’s staring. The smirk on his face was hardly innocent, and if she guessed correctly his gaze was not where it should have been.
Alex flicked his eyes to her and his smirk intensified as he spoke, “He’s got a nice ass.”
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`“Dammit, Alex.” Cole grunted when he was slammed into the solidarity of a brick wall. The hands supporting him clutched the back of his thighs, squeezing in a manner he supposed was meant to be encouraging. Alex kissed him, rough and without mercy, until he was breathless and had to push away. Already a hand was up his shirt after unzipping his jacket, and Cole felt ridiculous for letting this behavior slide.
Alex rubbed against Cole’s face, enjoying the rough prickle of facial hair on his cheek. His nuzzle turned into a quest, which had him planting kisses and nips up and down the exposed neckline. Beneath him he felt Cole squirm, readjusting, and he knew he needed to leash his strength. His motions turned from harsh and eager to casual and patient.
Rewarding the change of pace, Cole initiated a kiss, curling his fingers in Alex’s hair. He led the kiss, tipping Alex’s head and wordlessly demanding obedience through the use of his tongue.
“Hey,” Cole held Alex’s face steady until those eyes looked at him, “I don’t want to do this here. Let’s go somewhere else.”
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`Cole didn’t expect to wake up in a hotel room. Granted, there wouldn’t be any room service, but he never liked room service to begin with. Rolling over in the bed, the sheets twisting around his legs, Cole flicked his eyes from one corner of the room to another. Alex was on the balcony, feet hooked behind the legs of a simple chair, shirtless and soaking up the sun. Though his face was hidden, Cole could imagine his expression. Alex was relaxed; completely at ease without the slightest concern for his life.
Alex didn’t need to worry about a potential attack. He was the closest thing to invulnerable that walked the Earth. The breath Cole heaved told him it was time to climb out of bed. He was a bit stiff and sore from the night of sex. It must have been approaching afternoon by now.
The time of day made him suspicious, and he stretched, cracking his back. He found his boxers and pants and put them on, stumbling a bit due to grogginess, but he was soon on his path to the balcony. His hands gripped the frame of the doorway and he leaned out.
“Hey,” his voice was heavy with sleep, “where’s my phone.”
Alex held the device up, “I’ve been taking your calls. All from Moya. Told her to lay off for a while.”
“Really?” Cole wrapped his arms around Alex’s neck from behind and covered the phone with his hand, “You been out here all morning?”
“No,” he titled his head when his neck was kissed, “I was inside most of the day, watching you sleep.”
“Because that’s not messed up at all.”
“You sleep well. Deeply.”
“Happens when you wear someone out after they’ve already had a long day.”
Alex tipped his head back, against Cole’s shoulder, and basked in the man’s presence while it lasted. It would be over in a few minutes, and he’d leave again to let the superhero continue with his tasks. He’d return to check up on him and make sure the situation was still within his control.
“I gotta go.” Cole rubbed the hairless plain of Alex’s chest and then vanished into the hotel room to finish clothing himself.
“I know.” Alex muttered to himself and remained in his seat, listening to Cole zip his jacket and contact Moya. The woman was irritated, and demanded an explanation as to who Alex was. Cole described him as another friend, like Zeke, to get the harpy off his back. Moya continued to nag while bringing him up to date on the happenings; all the while Cole was putting on his gloves and checking his backpack.
Alex stood and entered the room. Cole straightened from his bent over position, telling Moya he understood and would head over to a particular district. Alex reached for Cole’s shoulder and turned him around, plucking the phone from his hand and letting it drop to the floor.
“Al-” Cole was cut off, thrust into a vacant wall, and kissed. It was not a crushing movement like the day before. Instead, Cole felt the sadness behind it. A farewell-for-now connection permeated the air between them, and Cole returned it, understanding Alex’s wishes.
From the floor, Moya’s voice went ignored. Cole provided his undivided attention to the activity, drawing Alex closer. It lasted longer than Cole knew he had energy for, and Moya had given up several minutes into the duration and ended the call.
“Christ.” Cole panted, head dropping against the wall with a quiet thump.
Alex kissed the side of his mouth and then his temple, “I’m leaving the city today.” Cole nodded, eyes closed as he leaned into an embrace that said he understood.
“I’ll still be here.”
“I’ll find you.”
