For the most part, the feedback I got on the last chapter (with the ending in particular) was frustration and disappointment, and since AFF doesn’t allow replies to reviews (x_x) I decided to address it in an extra chapter.
You’re absolutely right. My goal the whole story was to paint a picture of a character who loses themselves into debauchery, told from their own perspective. Malon by the end of chapter 2 isn’t a very sympathetic character, yet because the story is from her perspective, she tries to rationalize her actions and seem more sympathetic. Now, onto Link’s reaction. Violence, anger etc were reactions I played around with when I was writing it, but in the end, I ended with what was in the final story for a few reasons. 1) It didn’t serve what I wanted to be in the story. Selfish and lazy, I know, but I didn’t like where that reaction would have taken me, so I just avoided it. 2) If Link loves Malon, and truly thinks that her actions were due to lack of options, then it’s not unreasonable that he would be willing to forgive her. Yes, probably not that quickly. I rushed the reconciliation because I didn’t want to write another chapter just for that one moment. Again, lazy, I know. Now, as for the complete ending itself, well...I left it open so that people could decide how their relationship would fair afterwards. Personally, I think that after time and a lot of work, they could reconcile. It is also possible that it’s damaged beyond repair, or that since Malon doesn’t actually seem all that remorseful, that she’ll break his trust. I didn’t want to dictate that. Anyway, I am truly grateful for everyone who read, and especially everyone who reviewed. I’m sorry if you were disappointed by the ending, but it tells me that I will need to be less lazy with characterization in the future.
