“Ticket, please?”
Chun Li looked at the attendant, handed over her ticket stub with a sigh. The man gave her directions she didn't need, looking at her quizzically.
“Is there a problem?” she asked, rocking on her heels, her hands in the pockets of her hoody, raising her voice to be heard over the roar of the crowd.
“No, not at all,” the attendant said. “Sorry, it's just been a long night. Do you need a hand getting to your seat?”
“I should be alright,” Chun Li answered, brushing past the man and walking down a long flight of stairs. She felt a few people looking at her as she went past, but not as many people as she was used to – the attention of the crowd was very much focused on what was happening in the center of the arena.
Her tickets took her down to the arena floor, where another attendant ran her through the same conversation as the one previous. She rolled her eyes and brushed past him, taking her ticket on the way past and looking for the unique hairstyle of the man she was hear to meet.
Colonel Guile was never hard to pick out of a crowd. He was a massive man, all hard muscle with a long face and one of the strangest haircuts she'd ever seen. There was a seat open next to him, and she took it, settling in beside him, the two of them exchanging quiet greetings under the roar of the crowd.
“How're things in Beijing?” Guile asked.
“The same as ever,” Chun Li answered. “Washington?”
“Nothing changes.” Guile shook his head. “Almost makes me miss Shadowloo. At least it was possible to get things done when Bison was running around."
"Seth is still out there. And we've had reports of someone named Gil...?"
"Neither is anywhere near the threat that Shadaloo was.”
“Agreed,” Chun Li said. “So, why are we meeting here as opposed to anywhere else?” She looked around at the massive screaming crowd, most semi-drunk, a good number carrying signs that proclaimed garish or nonsensical gibberish. In the center of it all was a ring, men pretending to fight within the confines of three ropes. She could not quite keep the look of disgust from her face.
“My brother's in the main event tonight,” Guile said, grinning. “He's fighting the world champ tonight.”
“Your brother is a pro-wrestler,” Chun Li said, her voice flat.
“We were both fans when we were kids.” Guile waved an attendant over, ordered another mug of beer. “Decided that one of us was going to wrestle Nikolai Volkoff, and the other was going to go into the military. You know, stupid kid stuff. Anyway, I lost the coin toss.”
“I'd say you came out ahead.”
“Really.” Guile frowned. “He's famous, makes more money, inspires millions, and isn't considered a living weapon of mass destruction.”
Chun Li looked at him.
“Beijing hasn't hit you with that yet, or have they just not made you aware of it?” Guile turned his attention back to the match. “Cuz, our government is keeping an eye on people like us.”
“Martial artists?”
“Don't be naive.”
They lapsed into silence as one match ended and another began. Guile cheered as his brother, Gunloc, came to the ring. The lights flickered briefly and a masked man wearing a large belt appeared amidst smoke and lightning. The announcer called him the Scorpion.
“See that?” Guile asked, drinking. “That teleport thing? Smoke and mirrors. Not like Dhalsim or Bison, back before we killed him. Normal people don't teleport without trickery being involved.”
“So, we're not normal?”
“Not in the slightest. You know, we tried to arrest Balrog after Shadowloo went down?” Guile continued, not looking at her. “We put him in a cell, a maximum security prison. He punched his way out barehanded, crippled several guards just by jabbing them. The forensics boys figure he can punch through a tank. Hell, both you and I have punched through cars barehanded without any sort of injury. How long does it take you to destroy a car?”
"I don't know. Twenty seconds?"
“No one else here can do that,” Guile said, licking his lips, looking over the crowd. “My brother couldn't. I punch with enough power to shatter steel. I know this because I've done it without even bruising my knuckles. You and me could kill everyone in here without much trouble, and there's nothing anyone could do to stop us. Hell, Balrog punched me in the face, full power, and I was fine.”
“And he can punch through a tank.”
“We're the new cold war.”
Chun Li thought about that for a moment.
“What about Dan?” she asked. Guile laughed, shaking his head and drawing stares from those that were there to watch the pageantry before them.
“You know, Dan once took out a platoon of GSG9 soldiers?” Guile looked at her, watching as she shook her head in disbelief. “It's true. He's the weakest of us by a long shot, but even he's more than other people's best.”
“I hadn't realized.”
“Neither had I, until some army people tried to have me detained for reasons of national security.” His eyes narrowed, his smile fading as he turned back to the match. “Gave me some time to think about why they'd want to do that.”
“I can hazard a guess,” Chun Li said, the words coming out slowly as she thought it over. “I can kick through brick, and I've been hit by Balrog and kept fighting – best two out of three – and all of us are like that. I never really thought about it before.”
“Why would we?” Guile sighed. “It's normal to us. You know that lethal gases only knock us out? We can't be poisoned. We heal quickly. I've been hit with machine gun fire and been fine a day later. Not even any scars to show for it.”
“No wonder prisons have trouble holding Cody.” Chun Li shook her head. “So, why am I here?”
“Something's happening, and I figure you're as bored as I am, and it concerns people like us,” Guile answered. “Have you been keeping track of anyone since Bison died?”
“Dhalsim transcended,” Chun Li said. “I bumped into Ryu about six months ago, but he's impossible to keep track of for long. Zangief went back to wrestling bears, Sagat went back to training... you'd know more about Ken than I would”
"Ken's fine," Guile grinned, shaking his head. "His kid's a little spitfire. Spends a lot of time playing with his cousins."
"You and your wife?"
"We went through conselling," Guile admitted, shrugging. "Helps that Bison's dead. Means I can spend more time at home."
"What about Vega?" Chun Li asked.
“Vega's killing people,” Guile said, tight-lipped. “We're trying to track him, but he's pit fighting and keeping a low profile. In his own way, he's as hard to keep track of as Ryu. We keep Balrog drunk in Vegas, so no problems there. Did you know Cammy is missing?”
“Again?” Chun Li asked, startled. “You don't think...?”
“Bison is dead,” Guile growled. “I know Bison is dead. But Cammy is missing, and so are Sakura and Juri. You were the last person to hear from Ryu – not even Ken's certain where he is.”
“You think someone is kidnapping people like us?” Chun Li asked.
“I know someone is,” Guile asked. “I got a file started on the mysterious them. No real witnesses, but we've got a lot of circumstantial evidence. You want to help me on this investigation?”
“Do you have clearance to invite a foreign national in?”
“No, but I can get it,” Guile grinned. “You'll find people are willing to bend over backwards to keep us happy, given what we can do.”
