A/N: The fourth installment of the “In The Wastes” series.
Crabbing in the Wastes
Rivet City, the last bastion of hope and security to the down trodden and hopeless people in the wastes, shattered by death and pain. Hank stood outside the city at the bridge. He was taking his new Power Armor for a spin and needed to sell the goods he had picked up along the way. He was packing his Xuanlong and his Scoped .44 side piece. “What the hell happened here? It looks like a warzone.” He slowly walked across the bridge, there was blood trails, and he could tell the door to the market was ajar. He scanned the area outside the doors. Blood puddles. Lots of people died here, were they raiders, slavers, both? Or some thing more sinister. Then in the corner he noticed something really out of place. A plasma rifle, it was Harkness’s. He’d seen it enough to recognize it at a glance. It was busted he noticed as he examined it, he could fix it but not right now. He carefully pushed the door to the market. His eyes grew wide in amazement, the place was flooded, water up to the base of the door. That was when he heard that distinctive clicking noise. “Shit, mirelurks.” He exclaimed. “I hate those things.” He took a knee and scanned the area. He saw one across the room too far away to be the one he heard. He was still outside the door, it could be right behind it. He pushed the door hard and backed away. It bounced off of something. A claw came around the door and pulled it open. The mirelurk stepped into full view; it was one of the bigger darker ones. It clicked angrily and charged him putting its head to block his face shots. It collided into his sending him flying back. He landed on his back ten feet from it, its face was now raised in triumph, Hank took aim and fired, its face popped in a shower of blood. He heard the others, they had noticed the noise. He was in pain but the mirelurks he heard swimming closer where good incentive to move. He grabbed the three landmines from his pack and started to back away from the door laying them out. He backed away form the last one and took a knee, aiming at the door. He saw three climbing out of the water. “Not enough landmines.” he said. He fired at the first one that was coming through the door. He popped it square in the face causing it to stagger back. One of the others charged forward stepping right on the landmine setting it off, he went up and its leg went somewhere. The first one was coming back, it missed the landmine but he brought it down with a few more shots to the face area. The third one stepped next to the second landmine blowing it over the railing of the bridge. He moved forward and grabbed his third landmine deactivating it. The legless one was still alive he moved close enough that he could get a clean shot but that didn’t stop the mirelurk from swinging furiously when it saw him. He unloaded three shots in its face and looked toward the market door. “I have to go in there, there might be survivors.” he closed the door to the market, and grabbed Harkness gun. He had to use the stairway or he’d sink like a stone with all this armor on.
He opened the door to the stairway and saw Harkness propped up against the stairs, he was offline. He looked up the stairs it was quiet. He looked down the stairs and saw water. The lower level was flooded too. Well I may not be from the commonwealth but I know a thing or two about robots, and I can’t make it any worse he thought. He leaned Harkness forward and examined him. He saw no serious outer damage. He probably got thrown from outside into the stairway dropping his gun and going offline. He let him fall back against the stairway, zzzzzzzzzz, Harkness blinked.
“What the hell happened?” he asked.
“You were offline.”
“Hank! You have to get out of here its-”
“Mirelurks I know, I’m well aware of them. Did you know the market is flooded?”
“Flooded?”
“Yeah it’s a giant pool now, and the mirelurks are having a party.”
“I say we crash it then.”
“Here’s your gun.” Hank said handing him the busted gun. “If we can get to the barracks in the tower I can fix it.”
“Well since I’ve been in here I haven’t heard anything, so I say it’s a good chance it’s clear. You ok to walk?”
“Yeah.”
Hank took the lead, having the automatic weapon, Harkness borrowed his Scoped .44. They came across no resistance going up the stairs and the guard barracks was deserted also. Harkness moved over to the door that was locked. He opened it and Hank saw a stockpile of weapons and an automated gun. “Give me a second to fix this.” Harkness told him.
“While you’re doing that can you tell me what the hell happened here?”
“I don’t know. I was up here; Danvers was on shift at the time. If we can find her we can get some answers.”
“Well anyone on the lower level is dead or escaped. But there might be survivors on the upper and mid ship level, we should check there.” Hank strategized.
“We’ll work our way down, hopefully they won’t be on those levels” said Harkness snapping the last piece into places. “Ready to go” he added.
“Should we split up or stick together” Asked Hank.
“The halls are narrow, whoever is in the rear won’t have a clean shot.” Harkness informed him. “I say we split up you take upper I’ll take mid met back in the stairway” Harkness continued. “Here’s your .44 back I won’t need it now.”
“Yeah I might need it.” Hank waited till Harkness descended down the stairs to the mid level then headed through the upper level door.
All was quiet as he entered, no clicking, nothing. He was halfway down the hall then he heard a door open, was it a room from the Weatherly Hotel or the market door? Still no clicking as he moved infinitesimally slow to prevent noise. Just one sound to identify it was all he needed. He got to the corner still no noise, he peeked around nothing. He knew it wasn’t Harkness, his door the market was underwater. He dropped the landmine he still had with him at the corner, anything coming around it was dead, or seriously injured. He moved cautiously to the door to the Weatherly Hotel, he peeked around the corner and saw Mister Buckingham the Mr. Handy lying on the floor. The door to Vera’s room was closed. Check it later, it was a door opening he heard not closing. He moved down the hall checking all the open rooms, all empty. Where the hell are they? He thought to himself. He turned back deciding to check Vera’s room someone could be hiding in there. No one was it was barren as all the others. Whoever was here had to go into the market, which is suicide. He moved down the hall to the market door as he got to it he saw the water was about three inch high on one side of the door and one on the other, meaning the ship is leaning, he was starting to piece together how the market got flooded. He slowly pushed open the door, it wasn’t latched. The water was murky and smelled terrible, the lurks must love it he thought. The lighting was horrible too, low and flickering. He saw a figure down at the other end of the upper walkway, they had their back to him, and didn’t hear him enter. They were aiming at a mirelurk that was standing on the upper part close to what use to be Gary’s Galley. They fired once, twice, three times. They had an assault rifle, had to be a guard. The lurks made a mad rush in his direction. He saw four moving in on the gunman. The gunman saw them too and opened fire to little effect on their hard outer shell. What the gunman didn’t see was the one that was right beside him having risen from the stairway. His gun fire had blocked out the sound of the water breaking. Hank did see it, he quickly drew his Scoped .44 sighted up and fired…one shot in its face it fell back and crashed into the water. The gunman did hear that, he jerked quickly to the sound then just as quick in Hanks direction. The guard got up and ran to Hank’s position, Hank didn’t move.
“Where the hell did you come from?” they asked.
“Danvers.”
“That’s right, surprised that I’m still alive?”
“I’m surprised anyone is still alive here. Is there anyone else?” He asked. She didn’t have time to answer the lurks where coming up the stairs at the other end.
“Through the door NOW!” she shouted. They both hurried through the door and took up positions at the top of the stairs incase they followed, which they did. The first two fell quick to shots in the face and the second two just as fast. “That was all of them for now.” Danvers said. “There are no more survivors I’ve been over the ship three times to be sure.” She added. “Can you tell me what happened? Harkness couldn’t tell me anything.”
“I’m not surprised Harkness is dead, killed by a Mirelurk using him as a baseball. Smacked him with he’s claw, he was hurled into the stairway, died on the spot. We put that one down and shut the door, pity too, Harkness’s gun was out there.”
“It was busted.” Hank informed her. “Let’s get out of here.”
“Gladly.” She agreed and they moved down to the mid-level.
“About time. Run into some trouble?” Harkness asked resting his plasma rifle on his shoulder.
“Harkness how… you… dead… how?” Danvers stammered gesturing to his former resting place. They exited the door and retreated across the bridge.
“It was an explosion on the side of the ship, we don’t know who did it, but it pierced the hull in the bottom of the market near the galley and it started to flood. We evacuated everyone immediately, but just as soon as the water was knee high the Mirelurks were in having a feeding frenzy. They were cutting down people left and right. The guards and I did our best, Flak and Shrapnel also helped out but to no avail, there were too many of them. Some people got out, Seagrave, Cindy, but Bannon, Angela, and Gary. They were in the area when the explosion was set off and the mirelurks first target.” She relayed to them the story. “After the last of the people in the market got out we started going floor by floor, the mirelurks were more aggressive than usual. They rushed us in packs, we couldn’t defend against it. As we got the last people out which wasn’t easy, only half the people we tried to escape got away, the other half the lurks got. That’s also where you got killed” she said looking up at Harkness. “Now I think its time you explain that little miracle.”
“I’m an android.” He said seeing no other explanation would suffice.
“The one Zimmer was looking for?”
“The same.”
“Well you don’t have to worry about him anymore, he’s dead. The mirelurks got him and his bodyguard.” “The question now is, what to do about this.” Hank said gesturing to the ship.
“Nothing. There is no way to patch that hole and you’d be a damn fool to try, that place is infested with lurks.” Danvers said. “Rivet City is dead, it’s time to move on.”
Bit of a twisted ending but I like it, Do you?Review if you want, good or bad I’d love to hear it.
