Chapter 4 – Ain’t No Party (Like a Darkspawn Party)
Evelyn leapt to the side, catching Hawke in the shoulder as she moved past, but the blade slid off the leather with a rasp. She backed up and dropped into a crouch. Evelyn had been on the defensive for most of the fight trying to dodge the whirling blades of the taller and faster rogue. The duelist was in her element. Where the budding assassin was being taught the use of poisons and shadows to debilitate her prey, she was unable to use any of those in this friendly match and was at a decided disadvantage.
She was fast, but not fast enough.
Evelyn threw herself backward to avoid Hawke’s sideways strike, catching the blade on one leather gauntlet. The tip of the dagger dug into her pale skin just above the elbow and she let out a yelp as she landed on her backside in the sand.
“Yield” She gasped, dropping her daggers and looking at the shallow cut on her arm “First blood.” She said, breathing heavily.
“I know” Hawke said with a triumphant smile. She sheathed her daggers and flopped down on the sand beside the Inquisitor. “Maker, you’re fast.”
“Me?!” Evelyn was incredulous “I barely kept up!”
“You did fine” Hawke said, then looked over at Alistair who’d stopped to watch “But the way he tells it, the Hero of Fereldan could kick both our asses, isn’t that right Alistair?”
Alistair grinned sheepishly “Err, did I say that? Obviously I meant that, uh… You’re all very… uh… talented women.”
The girls chuckled.
Evelyn was still trying to catch her breath, but it suddenly seemed impossible. Her heart rate began to speed up and she absently rubbed her chest.
“Are you ok?” Hawke asked, propping herself up on one elbow and looking intently at the Inquisitor.
“Yeah…” Evelyn said with a weak smile “I just… Can’t catch my breath.”
“Hmm… I’ll go get you some water.”
Evelyn struggled to a kneeling position, her movements slow and shaky, her head beginning to spin. Bile burned in her throat and her vision wavered.
“Something’s wrong…” She mumbled.
Her cheek pressed against the warm sand. Had she laid down? She couldn’t remember, but it seemed like a good idea. It was all too much effort. Strong hands rolled her over, Alistair’s concerned face, Hawke checking her eyes, her mouth, and her throat. They asked her questions but the words had no meaning. Evelyn tried to smile at them.
Then oblivion.
-
“Pack it up and move out guys, there’s a horde of darkspawn on the way!” Varric signaled his return to camp with the dire warning.
“What? Darkspawn?!” Alistair looked up at the dwarf from where he knelt beside Evelyn.
“What happened to the Inquisitor?” Varric asked.
“Err… I’m not really sure…” The blonde warden began.
“Poison” Hawke answered grimly “From my blade.”
“What??” Alistair demanded.
“You poisoned the Inquisitor?” Varric asked, raising one eyebrow.
“Well I didn’t do it on purpose. The vial leaked. Anyway, it shouldn’t even affect her, it’s made for red templars.” Hawke replied defensively.
“So why is she unconscious?” Alistair rubbed his face tiredly.
“The 64 million dollar question…” Varric stated.
“Regardless, we’ve got to get her back to Skyhold!” Alistair dismissed the questions and speculation, there would be plenty of time for that later, providing the inquisitor survived whatever Hawke had unknowingly done to her.
“There are a ton of darkspawn between us and the keep, we can’t go that way. But we need to get the hell out of -here-!” Varric said.
“Alright boys, grab the gear” Hawke said to Varric, and The Iron Bull and Dorian who had just rejoined them “Al, pick up our sleeping beauty. I’m pretty sure there’s an old mine entrance on the other side of this cliff.”
“Pretty sure?” Alistair’s skepticism was apparent.
“Yeah.” Hawke replied “Even if there’s not, we’ll still be out of sight. We can double back when the darkspawn go away.”
They had no better ideas.
-
There was an old mine entrance more or less where Hawke thought it would be. The Iron Bull and Dorian kept watch just inside while the others moved further in. Varric and Hawke decided to explore a little further still, just to be safe. Alistair wet a rag and wiped Evelyn’s forehead. Her skin was very hot to touch.
Sometime later Varric and Hawke returned, bickering.
“I told you not to touch it!” Varric was scolding the Champion.
“Nothing bad happened.” Hawke was trying to reassure Varric.
Almost as soon as she spoke the words, an ominous rumbling began to build around them. Varric glanced pointedly at Hawke, who refused to meet his gaze.
“So, ah, we might want to get moving…” Hawke said, as she and Varric hurriedly collected the gear. Varric went ahead to make sure Bull and Dorian got to safety as well, while Hawke helped Alistair with the Inquisitor.
“What did you do now??” Alistair asked incredulously, scooping Evelyn up in his arms.
“Less talking, more running!” Hawke said as the rumble grew louder, then “Look out!”
The blonde rogue dived at Alistair, knocking both he and Evelyn to the ground amid a shower of dust and sand. The sound swelled, and Hawke used her body to shield the other two as best she could. She felt the warden’s arms around her and tucked her face into the curve of his shoulder, Evelyn’s unconscious form held safely between them. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
