Chapter 4: Fear
Dozkai ran towards his father's office. He hoped to catch the old man off guard, or at least unprepared.
Hallways and stairwells flashed by as Dozkai ran. Time seemed to slow with each step. he heard shouts from behind him. What little of the element of surprise he had was quickly slipping away. The young Sith rounded a corner, bringing his father's office into view.
No guards? Good, that means I actually have a chance, Dozkai thought. Drawing his blade, he blasted the door with the Force, sending splinters of wood and metal into the room.
"So, the boy has a spine after all." His father said calmly from the desk
"Was this your plan, father?" Dozkai asked, before dropping into a defensive stance. He tried to prepare himself, he needed to be ready for any attack
"Not exactly. Granted, your mother would have been killed eventually." The elder man responded. He stood, and turned to look out the window. "Do you know why I have the power I do? Of course you don't.. I gained this power by knowing when the time was right to strike, and where to apply pressure. You, my son, are impulsive. You lack the will necessary to be a true Sith Lord. I once thought that you would one day grow out of your weakness, and become an heir worthy of me." Dozkai's father turned, drawing his lightsaber. "But now I must clean up your mess and salvage what I can." The man's voice was calm. Not at all the tone of a man preparing to duel his only son.
He walked slowly down the small set of stairs to stand in front of Dozkai
"I wont just lay down and die because it's your will, Father." Dozkai declared. He drew on the hatred that had built up over a lifetime of abuse at his father's hand. "No longer shall I hold myself as your son, but as your equal, Lord Jitssil" Dozkai said defiantly.
Jitssil laughed at this small act of defiance
"So, you think spouting a name you have no understanding of will change things?" He asked, his voice growing cold "You'll learn. Even if it's the last thing you ever learn."
Jitssil's saber flashed through the air. The laserblade nearly caught Dozkai across the chest. He stepped back, and brought his own blade up to deflect the following attack aimed at his head. Before he could respond with one of his own, Dozkai was thrown across the room, landing a few feet from Jitssil.
He rolled to his feet, preparing to attack, only to be blasted against the wall.
Jitssil moved closer, blasting him each time he regained his footing.
"So this is your great rebellion? " Jitssil asked as he grabbed Dozkai, pinning him against the wall. “Pathetic."
He shoved Dozkai to the ground
"You never understood why I was disappointed in you. You never understood it was because you could not be ruthless, could not do what needed to be done to gain and keep power." He said, lifting Dozkai with the Force, he held him against the wall once more.
“For all your talent and skill, you would fail outside these walls. Simply because you would not cull the weak. I will not make the same mistake " He said, lashing out with lightning.
Dozkai grit his teeth, and put every drop of willpower he had into refusing to scream in pain. With each passing second, the lightning intensified.
Suddenly, it stopped. Dozkai fell to the ground and looked up just in time to see Jitssil backhand Xana
"What have you done!" Jitssil screamed at Xana as she shakily found her feet.
"I just levelled the playing field a little!" She announced, showing him an injector "Nano-inhibitors. Not as effective as the supression collar but they can't be removed." Dozkai's lover smirked.
"You bitch!" Jitssil's voice was filled with anger. He blasted her with the Force, albeit far weaker than he normally could, sending her flying against the wall. Xana slumped onto the floor unconscious
"I'll deal with you later." He said. Turning to Dozkai, the Sith Lord drew his lightsaber again.
Dozkai managed to bring his blade up just in time to block Jitssil's attack. Jitssil pressed his blade into Dozkai's until their faces were merely inches apart.
"Even without the full power of the Force at my command, you're still not my equal, boy!" He said, before shoving his knee into Dozkai's ribs and pushing him into the center of the room.
"You're weak!" He said as Dozkai managed to block his next attack. "You're pathetic!" Another blow rained down. "You’re an embarrassment!" Yet another blow. "You sicken me" Jitssil's blade came down once more, Dozkai barely managing to deflect the onslaught as he staggered back from each blow.
The young Sith felt something snap, deep inside him and a sudden calm washed over him. He easily parried the next attack and followed up with his own.
"ENOUGH!!!!" Dozkai said as a surge of the Force blasts outward from him, knocking Jitssil back.
"How?" Jitssil asked as he looked at the storm of raw power being unleashed from Dozkai "Where is this power coming from?"
He rushed Dozkai, only to be slung back, landing painfully on his back. Sitting up, Jitssil lashed out with Force lightning, only to have it swept up in the force surrounding Dozkai.
Dozkai looked at Jitssil, the man who, moments before held his life in his hands, now in a panic at the manifestation of all the hatred and fear that he had crashing around him in pure uncontrolled chaos.
"What's wrong? Does the weak power at my control frighten you?" He said as he stepped toward Jitssil.
Jitssil backed away in disbelief, lashing out with blasts of Force lightning, throwing, all the power he could muster. It was all absorbed into the raging storm around Dozkai as he walked calmly forward.
"No one has that much power! No one!" He screamed in terror.
Dozkai held out his hand and slowly closed his fist. Jitssil screamed in pain as his arm creaked then snapped. Dozkai lowered his left hand and repeated the motion with his right. Jitssils's other arm also snapped.
Dozkai motioned to the side and Jitssil was flung across the room. He impacted the wall with painful severity, leaving a crack where he hit.
Dozkai's motioned the other way and Jitssil was thrown against the other wall, with even more force than before.
The sound of bones shattering and his screams of pain echoed through the room. Dozkai let Jitssil fall to the ground in a heap.
"What's wrong, father? I thought I was pathetic and weak. Surely a Sith Lord such as yourself could defeat me easily." Dozkai held out his hand and Jitssil floated off the floor. "Where is your power now, old man?"
Dozkai slowly closed his fist. Jitssil's body began to crumple in on itself. What few bones not already broken, creaked and shattered as he screamed in agony.
"...And now it ends." Dozkai clenched his fist, and his father's head exploded, spraying blood and brain matter across the ceiling.
Dozkai let the corpse fall to the floor in a mangled mass of gore. He panted for breath, before everything went black.
-
Hours later, Dozkai came to in the medical wing of the compound.
"Doctor, he's waking up!" He heard someone say off to the side. He tried to look and see who it was, but his vision was blurry and unfocused.
"Good, I was beginning to worry." Dozkai heard someone say, coming closer as they spoke.
Dozkai felt something touch his arm and a sharp pain shot through him, causing him to sit up.
"Easy there, my lord. You need to take it slow. You’ve taken a hell of a beating." Dozkai recognized the voice as Dr. Basai and calmed down. Gentle hands laid him back down.
"What happened?" He asked as his vision refocused. Dozkia saw the old cyborg that had treated him since he was five.
"We don’t really know, my lord. Xana won't let us see the security footage. What we do know is you’ve got three broken ribs and a concussion, as well as several strained and torn muscles. I can only assume you’ve been in one hell of a fight." Basai said matter-of-factly. "I hope you won." He added with a chuckle.
"Doctor, if you don’t need me here, I'll go check on the guardsmen that came in this morning." The nurse said softly.
"Hmm? Oh yes, go ahead. Now that Dozkai's up, I can handle things here " The doctor replied before turning to Dozkai.
"Now, you'll need to rest for a week or two before you're able to move very much. We could speed things up with some kolto, but it's not severe enough to really warrant it " Basai said, as if he knew what was coming next.
"Get the kolto ready, but first have Xana come here. I want to talk to her." Dozkai told Dr. Basai, who replied with a nod and a sigh.
After a few minutes, Xana walked into the room.
"Thank the gods you're alright! " She said as she ran over to Dozkai, pulling him into a hug.
"Agh! Watch it, broken ribs, remember?" Dozkai grunted as pain flared through his injured body. Frowning, Xana released him.
"Thanks." Dozkai said, rubbing his side.
"So what happened? Last thing I remember is you getting knocked out, and then doing all I could not to get sliced in two, then nothing." Dozkai asked.
Xana's beautiful features were suddenly overtaken with an expression of alarm." You really don’t remember?" She asked, a slight twinge of fear in her normally steady voice.
"No. What is it, what did I do?" Dozkai asked softly.
"Th-the surveillance shows you unleashed.... I don’t know what to call it... A storm of raw anger... You crushed your father's arms, then the footage cuts out.” Xana said hesitantly. “Dozkai you.... You completely destroyed his body. There was nothing left of Jitssil but crushed bone and meat."
"Yes, and my lord's death presents us with quite the... conundrum." A female voice, unknown to Dozkai's ear and brimming with a feline sensuality came from the medbay's door.
A tall thin cathar woman stepped into the room.
"Who are you?" Dozkai asked steeling himself to fight, to defend himself and Xana. A sharp pain shot through him as he did so.
"Relax, young man. My name is Karisha. I am, or rather, was your father's second in command and top spy. He had a contingency in case of his death, though I don’t think he intended that death to be at your hands. All of his forces are to be placed under your command.” Karisha told him. Dozkai could hardly believe it.
“However, it does state that you must meet certain qualifications.” The Cathar continued, before Dozkai could think of a question to ask. “First of which is that you must be ranked among the Sith. You do not at the moment. As such, control is placed in my hands with orders to continue his current plans and advise you on how best to achieve the necessary qualifications to take command." Karisha explained in a calm tone.
"So what, you’re a proxy?" Dozkai asked.
"Yes, you could say that." The Cathar replied.
"And what if I don’t want control of his forces?" Dozkai asked.
"Then control would fall completely to me, at which point I would be free to do as I wish with it." She answered.
"I see. Then what do you 'advise' I do first?" Dozkai asked, a hint of acid in his tone.
"That's simple. To become ranked in the Sith, you must go to the academy. To do that, you must either gain a patron, or go through the selection trials. Given your circumstances, the easiest route would be the trials. I feel I must add that, given what I saw on the surveillance, I would recommend you go to the academy to learn to control that power, lest it destroy you, if for no other reason." She replied, a bit of steel in her voice.
"You needn't decide just yet. For now, the compound staff are under your command. I would suggest miss Xana here to be your second in command. Her loyalty to you is quite strong." Karisha adds, almost as an afterthought.
"That's.... good " Dozkai answered, a little surprised. "Xana, get as full an idea of just what it is that I – That we have on our hands. Get me a report by the time I'm out of the kolto tank" He asked.
"Yes sir." Xana responded, snapping him a salute.
"Don’t act like an underling. You’re my lieutenant now " Dozkai said, snarkily saluting back at her.
"Okay, then. As your lieutenant, I suggest you get your ass back to work ASAP" Xana said with a coy grin
Karisha rolled her eyes at the display, but followed Xana out of the room to be questioned at length about the rather vast holding of Jitssil and her plans for those holdings.
"Now that that’s out of the way, my Lord, it is time for your kolto treatment. It will take two or three days to heal, even with kolto." Dr. Basai said as he walked over to the bed and began to roll it towards the other room.
"That’s fine, doc." Dozkai replied, half lost it thought.
