Presently, Yugo was seated next to Kenji on one of the chairs in the principal's office. They were both facing Miss Inoue, the principal herself, a suit-and-glasses woman with an air of professional seriousness. Her long dark hair was tied in a bun behind her head. She was a beautiful middle-aged woman, but somewhat intimidating. Yugo had had his fair share of problems with authority figures in his school days, so he couldn't help feeling as if he were about to receive a lecture.
"Ohgami-san," she said to Yugo, "I'm sorry to have asked you to come here on such a short notice, but there is a delicate situation that needs to be addressed. Has Kenji-kun talked about it with you?"
Yugo turned to face Kenji, but the boy merely looked the other way. Kenji, what kind of trouble have you got yourself into this time? Yugo thought alarmed.
"No, Inoue-san, he hasn't."
"Well, then I will be direct: there is a rumor circulating that Kenji is a zoanthrope, and Kenji-kun hasn't denied it. In fact, some sources say he has even confirmed it," the woman said gravely. Yugo noted that she had said the word 'zoanthrope' without batting an eyelash. Scary.
Kenji chose this moment to make things worse: "It's true, so what's the point in denying it? I mean, it would be simple to demoralize the source of the rumors by saying it's just an ex-boyfriend's grudge, but that would be too cowardly even for me."
In a matter of seconds, Yugo was looking like he'd seen a ghost. Miss Inoue, on the other hand, merely sipped her tea and adjusted her glasses, waiting for the man's mood to settle down. From the looks of it, Kenji was saying the truth in both regards.
"Ohgami-san, there is no rule in our school discriminating against zoanthropes or homosexuals, but I'm afraid Kenji-kun is exposing himself too much. We are unable to protect him against discrimination from his fellow students, which is sure to happen if these rumors continue." She was talking to Yugo, but it was obvious her words were directed at Kenji.
"Inoue-san, I don't know what to say, I..." Yugo trailed off, clearly embarrassed. Kenji, by contrast, was as calm as a repeat criminal. If anything, he looked bored.
"Ohgami-san, please don't misunderstand me, I'm just saying this for Kenji's sake. If possible, I would like you to talk with him and see what can be done to prevent further damage to his reputation."
"Inoue-san," Kenji intervened, "I'm sorry, but I'm not going to change my mind. I'm tired of lying all the time. I don't care what people say – from now on I'll be who I really am. And if anyone tries to mess up with me... well, we all know what happened last time someone tried," he finished with a smile. Yugo face-palmed.
Now Miss Inoue actually turned to face the boy. "As long as you don't use violence and don't cause any trouble, you can do as you wish, but it would make me very sad if your grades dropped because you wasted your time dealing with unnecessary problems," she finished. Kenji didn't miss the subtle threat: his scholarship hinged on his grades.
"I can assure you I'm fine," he rebutted confidently. "In fact, my reputation has mostly increased after the rumors started circulating."
"Mostly," she pointed.
"Naturally, almost no-one is taking it seriously, but that's only because I didn't bother trying to deny the rumors. And, besides, it's true, so what am I to do? Live my life hiding in fear? No thanks," the boy finished with a shrug.
"I see," Miss Inoue said. Those two were now talking like equals. Somehow, Yugo felt like he had been reduced to a stage prop at some point during the conversation and, although he knew he was an unreliable parent, being left out was a bit too much.
Noticing his evident discomfort, Miss Inoue turned to him: "I will leave this issue on your capable hands, Ohgami-san. I trust you will make the better judgment." Somehow, Yugo was sure she didn't, and ironically he found himself agreeing with her. But, more importantly, he was glad the conversation was nearing an end.
"Alright, I'll keep that in mind," he replied politely. "Thank you for the concern, Inoue-san."
"Not at all, we are always working in our students' best interests."
Oh, I bet you are. And the fact that Kenji is number one in this school doesn't have anything to do with it, not at all. Yugo thought sarcastically. See you later, bitch.
Farewells and a few minutes later, they were out of the office and on the street making their way home. Kenji had conveniently decided to skip club practice again. In fact, he was seriously considering switching to the basketball club, despite his height disadvantage. Himuro's little 'revenge' was so cowardly that Kenji didn't trust himself to act with the usual cool around him. Truth be told, it had been a very undesirable turn of events, even if Kenji had managed to turn it to his advantage somehow. The journey home had been mostly quiet, but Kenji was suddenly drawn out of his musings by Yugo's voice:
"Hey, Kenji, I just wanted to say I'm really proud of you," the man said a little embarrassed.
Kenji was surprised, as he'd expected Yugo to scold him. "What do you mean?" The boy asked curiously.
"When I was your age, I always wanted to do what you did, but in the end I lived my whole school life hiding like a coward, just trying to fit in and stay out of trouble. Facing off the principal like that... it's something I could never do. What you just did took a lot of courage."
"But you have a lot of courage too," Kenji rebutted. "As soon as you learned the location of the ZLF headquarters, you rushed there to save me even though you didn't even know what had happened to me or even if I was alive."
"Yeah," Yugo agreed laughing, "and you nearly turned me into mincemeat for it!" Almost imperceptibly, Kenji cringed – it was still a very painful memory for him. Yugo could be very insensitive at times without realizing. The laughter died out quickly and they walked a bit more in silence, until Yugo spoke once again:
"But that's not really courage, you know," he said in a pensive mood. "It took some courage, yes, but it was mostly recklessness and desperation. You're all the family I have, I just couldn't bear the thought of losing you."
At that point, Yugo stopped and turned to face Kenji with a serious gaze. When their eyes met, Kenji felt as though his whole existence being drawn into Yugo's golden eyes, and he found himself wanting it more than anything. Kenji might not know what love was, but he knew he definitely felt attracted to Yugo, and not just physically. He had to find a way to change the subject.
"Anyway," the boy started, forcibly returning his gaze to the path ahead and resuming the walking. "If you wanted to tell people, why didn't you? I mean, surely you had one or two close friends who could keep a secret."
"Nah, not really. People were too busy treating me as if I were a foreigner, and I was too busy mistrusting everyone and shutting people out, even the good ones. You could also say times were harder then, since the existence of zoanthropes was still a secret. I just was so afraid of what would happen if people found out. I didn't want to cause my mom any trouble – she had always overworked herself for my sake, so the least I could do in return was to stay out of trouble."
"Well, I guess I've just caused you a lot of trouble."
"Times are different, and you're much smarter than me, so I think it'll be alright. And besides, if you're happy with this, that makes me happy too."
"...Thanks." Kenji replied a little timidly. Yugo's honesty was just too endearing, Kenji couldn't keep his cool when the man spoke sappy things like that.
"But hey, that thing you said about 'ex-boyfriend's revenge'... is it true?"
"Oh, yes," Kenji replied quickly, both glad and disappointed with the change of subject.
"Then you've stopped seeing that Himuro guy??"
"Yes, that would be the right conclusion," Kenji said a little puzzled.
"FUCK YES!" Yugo shouted, suddenly drawing looks from an elderly couple walking across the street.
"Why are you so happy?" Kenji asked with an unexpected quizzical look that was almost comical on his face.
"I never liked that guy, he smells like a coward."
"He smells like a coward?" Kenji inquired. Yugo used strange words sometimes.
"Yeah. I mean, the day we first met he was so busy trying not to piss his pants that he couldn't even greet me, so I didn't expect much out of him. I just can't bring myself to trust people without balls, so I'm glad you got rid of him."
"Oh, I see," Kenji said. "Yugo, you must be aware of it by now, but few people can even hope to face you down in a staring competition."
"Oh, come on, I was going out of my way to be friendly!"
"Friendly? You were looking at him like you wanted to kill him right there and then!"
"Really??" Yugo asked, genuinely surprised.
"Really."
For the rest of the walk home, they spent their time talking about inconsequential things, such as how Kenji was doing in school, Yugo's new training regimen for the upcoming fitness competition and so forth. Yugo was happy to hear that Kenji had made new friends – he didn't want the boy to grow up to be a lone wolf like he had. Surprisingly, the rest of the week proceeded without any hassle regarding the whole zoanthrope deal. It seemed Kenji was handling things well.
