"ESTER! you overslept! Kafei's waiting for you at the Inn! hurry up or you'll be late!" Link's voice echoed throughout the house. the impish creature appeared in front of Ester as she awoke, and rather rudely said "Come on! get your lazy butt up and at 'em!"
When they got to Kafei and Anju's Inn with the small being in Ester's shadow the entire way there, Kafei came out the door and greeted them, or more specifically her, with a smile and three packages.
"These are very important items. deliver the one to the Deku palace first, then come back here and I'll hopefully have convinced your father to allow you to accompany him to the Great Bay. but promise me you won't open the packages. there is a very good reason I don't trust the postman. You were the best option since I've known your father for so long, even before you were born!"
He handed her the package marked "Deku palace" and smiled. "Good luck! make sure you equip some proper weapons for the trip. there are some nasty critters outside the walls of Clock town!" and with that he rushed back inside to quiet down a customer who was getting impatient.
"Well... That's that then! Come on, lets get a sword or something and get going!" her shadow said changing it's shape to match the impish creature, then shifting back when it was done speaking.

Ester smiled; he had fallen for it! Thank the Goddesses! She really didn't want to explain that there was a small being in her shadow that had crashed through the ceiling of the shed. She hurried up the stairs and crawled into the bed. She glanced up at the small being, arching a brow at him. "Haha, very funny" she huffed, turning over and falling asleep.
"Aww Deku nuts, why did I have to oversleep today of all days?" she cursed to herself, whipping the sheets off her and getting her things together, cramming multiple outfits into her bag, along with tying a small pouch of rupees to her belt. Out the door she went, only pausing to grab a piece of bread to eat on the way.
Once they got to the inn, she put the parcels into her knapsack, and smiled at Kafei. "Don't worry, I'll get them there." Of course, the idea of evil creatures trying to attack her was concerning, but which what things her father had taught her with the ways of swordfighting, she was sure she would be fine. She glanced at the spunky being with which she was hardly acquainted with, giving a nod. "Well, I can go get that sword of mine, but I'm pretty sure a wooden sword wouldn't work too well out there..." She shrugged, jogging over to the shed. Ester rummaged through the pieces of wood until she found the one shaped like a weapon. "Alright, let's go!" She raised the blade to the air, a chord of triumphant music playing in her mind as she ran out into the wilderness.

As the two ran along the various paths that would eventually lead to woodfall and in turn the Deku Palace, one of the nearby bushes began to rustle as they passed. When the duo were close enough to the patch of grass, a monstrous creature resembling a Venus fly trap and a blue flower sown together by some crazed geneticist launched itself at Ester and almost took a bite out of her right hip.
"Could you be any less careless?" The small person in her shadow shouted, popping out of her shadow. unfortunately for him, the minute that sunlight hit his skin, he yelped and dove straight back into her shadow. "Owwowwowwowwoww. You know, I think I'll just stay in here. have fun fighting the Deku Baba. this one doesn't look poisonous, though, so you can kill it, right?"
The Deku Baba tried to attack again, this time being halted by it's short stem. "Hey, maybe you can kill it if you time it's movements. Just don't get eaten." Ester's shadow warned.

Ester yelped when the odd plant suddenly lunged at her. "Holy-!" She jumped back, swinging at the creature in panic. She had never fought an actual live enemy before, well, other than the occasional Keese. At least they weren't possibly poisonous! Hearing her companion shout out in pain made her glance back at him, but she quickly remembered that there was a killer flower in front of her and she swung her sword again when it snapped at her. Her eyes were big as she watched the creature bob its head, looking for a weak spot on her as she did the same. Suddenly, she lunged, swinging her sword and slicing through the stem. It released a gurgling cry and flopped over dead. Ester stared at the dead enemy, blinked a few times, then noticed a green gem glinting just beside the corpse. "Oh cool, treasure" she muttered, going and picking it up.

Ester's shadow sighed. "Really? you're excited over one little Rupee? that's the saddest thing I've heard yet."
As the two made their way toward the entrance to the swamp, which would lead them to the Deku palace, the Imp spoke up again. "Come on! you got that excited over one Rupee and you're telling me you aren't the least bit curious as to what the parcel has in it. I mean I'm no genius here, but shouldn't we know what we're carrying? and why wouldn't that Kafei guy do it himself if he was so worried about it? C'mon, just open the thing already!" he pressed almost tauntingly.
Ester blew a strand of hair out of her face, starting to get annoyed by the guy. But he did have a point. She WAS curious about what was inside. Pursing her lips, she tried to weigh out the positives and negatives of doing that. Well, that lasted for about a second. She tore into the package greedily, pausing when she felt something fall onto the ground. "Uh... what is it?"
As the two looked at the object that fell out of the parcel, night had fallen and the Imp leapt out and snatched the item in question. "It-It's a wodden Deku Scrub mask!" he said surprised. At this point, the wood let out a small spark that traveled into the imp's arm. he fell to the ground and blacked out for a second when he rose back to his regular hovering position, he smiled.
"You know, I just remembered something important about that dad of yours... Link, was it? I wonder what happens if I do this..." he said as he flew over to Ester and slammed the mask on her face, giggling.

Sure, the fact that she got money from killing something that was trying to kill her was pretty nice, but she wasn't ecstatic about it or anything. After all, you couldn't buy anything for one single rupee. The package made her curious though, and as much as she wanted to keep her promise, she reasoned that she hadn't promised to not open it! Staring down at the little wooden mask, she cocked her head. That was it? A little mask of a Deku? What kind of crazy world was it that Ester had to go on a wild adventure to the Deku palace just to deliver a simple mask?
Her head whipped around when the imp fell down, but her concern didn't last too long. At least he wasn't permanently damaged by it. "Wait, what are y-" Before she could finish her sentence, the feeling of cool wood against her face suddenly turned into what felt like acid. She let out a bloodcurdling scream, clawing at the mask, trying to get it off her. It wasn't letting her face free. She grasped it with both hands, praying to the Goddesses that this pain would stop. Her eyes turned bloodshot and huge in the cut out holes of the piece of wood. She let out another scream and everything went black.

"Ugh.... what the heck happened?" Ester let out a moan, putting a hand on her face. Except, all she could feel was a wooden texture, and her hand felt like it was numb. Her eyes widened, and she stared down at her body, now a short, stubby wooden figure. "OH DEAR GODDESSES WHAT HAPPENED?!" she began to panic, flailing her tiny arms about.
