The fight was over before it even began, to the point where it hardly seemed like a battle. Thanks to his vines, Chikorita had managed to keep the much bigger Scyther at a safe distance while it threw razor sharp leaves ar him, each leaving a definite bruise on the intimidating bug. Bugsy, the teen-aged gym leader from Azalea, always had a haughty attitude towards the green haired woman. Some years ago, when she had a geodude, she had never been able to even leave a scratch on his Pokemons, but Chikorita had wiped the floor with him. If Scyther had ever been able to get close, the fight would probably have been a lot closer, but the facts remained. Bugsy never had a chance.
That morning, she had woken up in high spirit despite the fact that she had an agitated night. She had awaken very early and, when she realized she wouldn't be able to sleep again that night, she began to pack three bags, preparing for the long journey ahead of them. The rest of the team woke up with the first light of day, and enjoyed the work Renata had done while they slept. The two Pokemons satisfied their hungers with a mixed meal of rice and berries. Renata wished she could have eaten a bit, but she comforted herself in knowing she could drink her usual ration of the solution the community had given them. She called it the solution. Then, when everyone was satisfied, she grabbed a her favorite dotted dress from her drawer and reluctantly put it on, thinking that her clothes were little more than a disguise anymore.
Renata stepped out of the house first and peeked around. Most people were still asleep, allowing them to walk to the gym unhindered. Chikorita was actually excited about seeing Bugsy. The gym leader seemed dazed, opening and closing his mouth very quickly, frowning as if he couldn't understand what had just happened.
"But... how! How could you beat me? I train Scyther everyday, I take him on my research and everything! And you're... well you're Renata! You are just... so bad at battling! Everyone knows you're just eye candy, you've never done anything by yourself! I bet you won't even be able to train your Chikorita right! Better release it now like Geodude" said the humiliated gym leader, spitting is hateful words at Renata
"Proves you wrong, you arrogant, self absorbed, wannabe researcher! See how easy it was for Chikorita to beat you? You're weak! You hide behind your pokemons like you own them! You don't realize that without them, you are nothing! NOTHING! You represent everything wrong in this world! There are many things you don't understand. I am part of something much bigger than myself now, and you'll never be a part of it! You don't deserve it!" snapped Renata, angrier than she had been for years. She yelled her last sentence, angry at what Bugsy had told her.
Without any other warning, Chikorita wrap its vines around Bugsy's neck, pulling hard to put his head on Chikorita's level. You could tell that it was angry. Scared, the gym leader started to scream to let him go, ordering to the other trainers around to fetch the cops. The pokemon released him as Renata stormed out of the gym, not even interested in getting the badge. She ran back to her house, grabbed her bag and waited for Chikorita to get home. Naoko and Bryan were waiting for her, already dressed and ready to leave. Chikorita arrived a few seconds after Renata. When she saw it, she fell to her knees
"I'm sorry, Master! I shouldn't have gotten angry like that" she said, her eyes once again filling with tears. "I almost slipped, almost revealed him too much! I'm sorry! Maybe I am ready yet" Tears were dropping on the ground now, as she spoke her mind. When she stopped sobbing, she saw that Chikorita wasn't actually angry. "I'm sorry... but I don't think he could be one of us... he is annoying, loud mouthed and arrogant. He doesn't have an open mind like we have."
"Chiko" answered the green dominant pokemon, meaning that it agreed with its human slave.
Chikorita signed for her to gather the supplies, as they needed to leave as soon as possible. By the time she closed the door, a crowd had gathered around her. They obviously were aware of what had happened in the gym. Looking through the small crowd, Renata realized she had no attachment to any of them whatsoever. She knew most of their names, but she didn't miss any of them during her captivity. This made leaving much, much easier. She was stopped by Kurtz, an old hermit that lived on the outskirts of town. She took a few minutes to explain to him that she had gone for a few weeks to Goldenrod, and that she ran into Bryan there. There, they decided they wanted to leave together on an adventure, that they needed the fresh air. On their way back here, they met Naoko and decided to take her along with them. She knew it was half believable at best, but it was the best she could do on the spot. The old man seemed to swallow her story, as he bid them farewell. Her heart was still racing over what had happened with Bugsy in the gym, so she hurried, walking past Slowpoke's well and into Union cave.
In all her years, she had never dare venture into this cave, as she always was a bit claustrophobic, but her sense of duty mattered much more than her fears. The ragtag group slowly entered the cavern leaving a very hesitant Renata behind. she hesitated only for a few seconds, but it had been enough to lose sight of her companions. She reluctantly entered the cavern, shaking as she watched around her, seeing nothing but rocks all around her. It was the first time in weeks that she was separated from her Master, and it made her uneasy. She started to look for it, yelling its name, but Chikorita was nowhere to be found. Things were always getting worse and worse. First, she had been separated from both her Trainer and her group, leaving her alone in a damp, menacing cave. Second, she couldn't shake that feeling that she was being watched even though the cave appeared to be completely deserted.
As she turned a corner, she noticed something strange. A few feet away from her, there seemed to be a table and a chair. Curious, she walked closer and noticed it was full of fresh ramen, her favorite food. She was salivating. It had been months since she last had been fed anything but the solution. She Looked around to make sure it was still deserted and sat at the table, perfectly happy to eat this tasty, free ramen.
A few feet away, a ghastly was looking at her, sitting on a rock. How easy it is to confuse humans, especially when they are not carrying their precious Pokemon. She must have been with the small group that passed through here a few minutes earlier, but they had left her behind. She was now Ghastly's prey. It had no idea how long its confuse ray would work on her, but it started relishing on every torment that this girl would go through before it freed her, IF it wanted to free her. Maybe next she could get eaten by an Arbok or she could get attacked by a swarm of Beedrill. Better yet, maybe she could be tricked into following Ghastly deeper into the cave and swim to the other side of the underground lake, trapping her forever. It started laughing very, knowing the human wouldn't be able to hear anything for a while.
A few feet away, Chikorita was now looking for its human. Truth be told, it was more than a little annoyed to have to go back inside that cave, as it preferred by far the greener, luxurious parts of Jotho. It was now running full speed across the main path, its head looking right and left frantically for a sign. A little further away, Chikorita noticed a strange shadow walking away and decided to investigate. Once Chikorita had caught up with the shadow, it saw that the shadow was indeed Renata, walking away.
Chikorita yelled as loud as it could, but she didn't seem to hear. Her footsteps were strangely mechanic, as if she wasn't even aware that she was moving. Using its vines, it slapped the human on the leg, leaving a definite small bruise. She still didn't stop walking, losing herself deeper and deeper inside the cavern.
Chikorita's instincts kicked in as it dodged a small purple energy ball. There was someone or something controlling the obedient human, making her move like a moth drawn to a flame. It risked throwing a couple of leaves in the general direction of the purple ball's energy, to no avail.
"Chiko" said Chikorita which meant This human is mine
A Gastly suddenly appeared in front of Chikorita. It shook its head from side to side and licked the human's cheek, trying to claim ownership of its prey. The confused human showed no reaction, except that her skin was now red where the tongue had touched her, just as if she had been lightly burned.
Annoyed, Chikorita grabbed the confused human with its vines, dropping her behind it. It waved its whips menacingly, trying to discourage the other Pokemon to let go of her, but the Gastly disappeared, reappearing behind Renata. Chikorita turned around and tried to attack Ghastly again with his razor leaves, but the ghost avoided the attack once again. Chikorita seemed to be unable to land a single blow, while the other Pokemon appeared to be enjoy itself, not even trying to attack.
Renata started to regain control of her body. It was dark, much darker than she remembered. Her last memory was that she saw a table far away. Everything else was a blackout after that. She quickly snapped out of her reflections as she had to duck to avoid being hit by a sharp leaf. Looking in that general direction, she saw her Master battling with another Pokemon, which she vaguely recognized as a Gastly from having seen one in a book. Having never left Azalea town, she had hardly ever seen other Pokemon than the ones in Ilex forest or the one that trainers brought with them to battle Bugsy. From what she could see, the fight wasn't going well.
Ghastly had begun to attack, getting tired of toying with Chikorita. Its first attack hit the green Pokemon directly, leaving a large bruise on its side. Chikorita seemed to be hurt, as it stayed on the ground, unable to get up.
"NO! Don't hurt my Master!" she yelled, panicked. Seeing her trainer getting hurt was difficult for her. Ghastly stopped fighting and transported itself close the Renata. It looked at her with big round eyes, surprised at what it had just heard. Not waiting for permission, she ran to Chikorita and lifted it in her arms, pressing it against her body.
"Please, let us go! My Master is hurt! I have to heal him!" she pleaded to the ghost, not caring about revealing her true self anymore. The Pokemon unrolled its abnormally huge tongue in a smirk.
She saw the Gastly float in a precise direction, turning in circle. Renata walked towards it, hoping it was leading her out. She reached out to him, figuring she might finally had met their first ally in this adventure. Her mission was to gather Pokemons and Humans that would share their goal, and Gastly obviously was the type of Pokemon that would fit within the community, as much as she felt uncomfortable close to it.
She talked to the ghost, explaining everything she had went through, trying to get it to join the community against her better judgement. About fifteen minutes later, she finally saw a ray of light, indicating that the exit was finally in sight. She ran as fast as she could, being careful not to trip on the uneven ground, which proved especially difficult considering she carried her Master's damaged body.
Once outside, she were joined by Bryan, why waited anxiously for Renata to return. He hugged her very hard, and tried to kiss her as if they hadn't seen each other for years once again. Naoko, a few meters away, was busy massaging Espeon, completely unaware that Chikorita had returned and was unable to get up.
"Naoko" yelled Renata, as she carefully laid Chikorita's body on the ground. Naoko then proceeded to examine Chikorita.
"He's not too badly hurt" she said after a few minutes. "I can treat this injury easily, but we'll just have to camp here for a few days until he gets better, if that's ok with you, Espeon"
Espeon nodded, and Renata started to build a makeshift camp, planting a tent close to the cave's exit.
They spent several days nursing back the dominant Pokemon back to health. Renata spent most of her days gathering berries, feeding them to her Master. She spent most nights in the same tent as Naoko, Chikorita
Bryan, on the other hand, looked more and more terrible everyday. Nobody knew exactly why, but he looked tired... like he hadn't slept for days.
Gastly had stuck around, getting a habit of spooking the humans. It didn't seem to eat much, but it seemed especially fond of Bryan.

Yeah I always thought both Falkner and Bugsy were the most boring gym leaders of the game. I don't have much to do with them, but I can't skip them either :P
