Chapter 3
The months went by as Bartleby and Sonia threw themselves into their new lives. Sonia found a job building new computers while working weekend nights at a local club as a main act. He found an odd affinity for tools that Rotor had him learn on. It was proving to be nice and peaceful.
It didn’t take too long for things to become interesting once again. Only six months into their new life, Bartleby woke up one morning to the sound of Sonia vomiting. “My darling? Are you alright?” He asked her.
She smiled. “Yes, Bartleby my sweet. Why don’t you go to the kitchen. I’ll be out to make breakfast in a few moments.” She wiped her mouth. She supposed it was time to tell him, she thought as she cleaned herself up.
But by the time she was in the kitchen, he was placing two plates of eggs and bacon on the table along with the fresh percolator of coffee. “You were sick yesterday too darling… and the day before that…”
Sonia giggled as she sat down. “You are observant. And thank you for breakfast. Yes, I have been sick the past few days. I went to the doctor yesterday.” She said as she took his hand in hers and placed it over her belly.
Bartleby’s face lit up as he realized what she was saying. “Oh by the source… My dear, my love! Are we really? Are we really to have a baby, at last?”
She nodded and kissed him. “Yes, we’re having our first baby. We are starting our family.”
Robotnik still remained shut up in his palace, only able to watch his city transform from a polluted hell hole into a semi-decent place to live. It would take much longer to completely clean up the smog and filth but it was still quite the transformation after only six months. Why wasn’t he able to inspire such drive and ambition in the people? Why did they so readily follow the hedgehogs? Even the aristocracy was no longer supporting him. Their money was going directly into the cleanup efforts.
“It’s hard to see it… isn’t it…” A voice said sadly, alerting him to the presence of another.
Robotnik turned to see Aleena. “I was wondering how long it would take you to come gloat. But then.. if I recall, your children won’t even call you queen anymore.”
She sighed as she sat down. “Yes… they won’t even talk to me. I don’t know what to do… I came to you because I don’t know what to do… My children won’t talk to me. I’ve sent messages to Sonia but she doesn’t respond.” Her face shook and trembled. “My children don’t need me…”
He groaned and grabbed a fresh bottle of brandy and two snifters. “What more is there to say? We fucked up. In our feud over who knew how to best run the city, we drove a wedge between ourselves and the only ones we really care about. The only one who ever looked at me with something other than fear and disdain…”
Aleena nodded. “I had this beautiful dream… of rejoining my children and forming the council of four to free our people… It was prophesied. We were to free the city and restore it to its former glory. And now…”
The man nodded as he offered her the drink. “Now they are doing it all on their own. They don’t need us. Look at us. I wanted nothing more than to destroy your family. All I did was destroy my own. What do we do?”
She thought about it. “I think the only thing we can do is… we have to find them. We need to know they are okay. That they are safe and well. Happy…”
Robotnik nodded. “Agreed. That’s what matters. I need to… to… make things right if at all possible.” Somehow in those words, he realized, they had formed a sort of unholy alliance.
The Underground no longer played their music in secret. The people no longer hid in fear. The resistance was no longer needed and the city was slowly coming to life once again. The taxbots had attempted to take their money as they were programmed to do but this time the citizens would have none of it. They soon discovered that the bots only had teeth if they allowed them to. Reprogramming them wasn’t hard at all.
Sonic looked around the square as he and his brother played for those who wanted to stop and listen. “I wonder what Sonia is doing right now?” He asked aloud, not realizing a familiar redhead was walking by.
The redhead stopped, her polka dot dress of pink and yellow making a stark contrast against green eyes. “You mean, you haven’t heard from Sonia? That’s funny, I get a letter from her every week.”
Manic looked at her and put his sticks down. “Really Mindy? What? Where is she? How’s she doing?”
Mindy shrugged. “All I know is she and Bartleby are somewhere in Acorn. They’re doing well. Bartleby has a job, they both have jobs. I just received a letter today actually. But I shouldn’t say much else. If you want to find out more, maybe you should take some time off and go find them. Pay them a visit.” She smiled at them as she walked off.
Sonic nodded. “You know, that sounds like a good idea. Everything is okay here for awhile. The people have what they need if Robotnik decides to be an opportunist. He won’t be able to take back the city before we can get back.”
Manic smiled as he put his drum set back in his medallion and went to get the van. As Sonic got in, he looked at the picture they kept of their sister. “Acorn. That’s only three days away in the van. So close…”
Sonic looked out the window. “I hope they don’t mind us dropping by but since we know where they are… I have to know they’re alright.”
AN: Will Sonic and Manic be able to find Sonia and Bartleby. What about Aleena and Robotnik and what will it mean if they can? Please review please!
