Ruben doesn't regret using his ability to bend reality to his needs in this instance, and that is because Vankirk isn't the only person affected. Thanks to Beacon being located in the heart of Krimson City, it is laughably easy for him to influence all of the necessary minds to secure his placement with Sebastian. Easy, but wholly exhausting, which compounded with his earlier exhaustion…
It takes everything he has to remain standing while they wait for Vankirk to leave, his vision starting to swim just the tiniest bit. He's vaguely aware of Sebastian saying something, but when he turns his head to look at the detective, everything goes black.
Upon his return to consciousness, he finds himself curled up in the back of a police cruiser with a jacket draped over him and his head on Sebastian's lap. The jacket, which he surmises to be Sebastian's, does little to chase away the chill that comes with standing outside, barefoot, in the rain, but that seems to be the worst of it. He doesn't feel any pain to indicate that he had fallen, which can only mean that Sebastian had caught him, no doubt due to his attachment to his body's previous owner. Regardless of why, he is grateful for the detective's kindness.
As for Sebastian, the detective is too busy giving directions to the officer at the wheel of the cruiser to notice that Ruben is awake. This gives Ruben a chance to quietly observe him outside of the constraints of STEM, and Sebastian does not fail to deliver. He is less guarded at this moment and seems to forget who is occupying his lap because he lets a hand come to rest on Ruben's side. For a moment, nothing happens, it's just the weight of Sebastian's hand sitting there on his side, and then the detective starts rubbing at the spot.
It feels nice, and it warms up that spot on his side faster than the jacket does. It isn't meant to last, however, because Sebastian finally looks down at him and notices that he is awake. The detective freezes at first, his eyes going wide while the realization of what he had been subconsciously doing clicks, and then he quickly pulls his hand away.
Ruben knows that he shouldn't be bothered by Sebastian's reaction, but it troubles him in a way that he can't quite explain or put words to—it makes him feel a sort of stinging sensation that is wholly unfamiliar and strangely internal. He decides to ignore it and sits up in an effort to make the whole situation less awkward for the detective, no matter how unsteady he still feels. It takes a minute for the world to stop swimming, after which he puts as much space between them as the seat allows, and Sebastian watches him move away with an indecipherable expression.
"How are you feeling?" Sebastian asks after a moment, his voice sounding just a touch strained.
Ruben glances Sebastian from his peripheral and then looks at the officer driving the cruiser warily before he hunches over and continues with his charade of acting like Leslie. "Feeling? Leslie is feeling cold." He grasps at the jacket, which has fallen onto his lap, and purposefully fumbles with it as he attempts to draw it up around himself.
Sebastian hesitates, his gaze flicking from Ruben to the officer and back again before he finally decides to give in and play along. He scoots closer and gently tugs the jacket out of Ruben's grasp to settle it across his shoulders, which lets him lean in close enough to quietly state, "We're almost at my apartment."
Ruben gives a jerky nod in acknowledgment to show that he understands the implication behind the words, to show that he hasn't forgotten his promise to tell Sebastian everything. It's clear that the detective doesn't trust him, which, after everything Ruben had put him through inside of STEM, is entirely understandable. Understandable to the point that Sebastian could very well kick him out onto the street once he has his answers, and Ruben won't fault him for it if it comes to that.
He doesn't like that it's possible, but it is best to be prepared for it in case it comes to pass, which seems more likely than not. And while that also gives him that strange and internal stinging sensation, it's admittedly not as bad as before. And at least it won't even be a betrayal on Sebastian's part because he's already held up his end of their agreement.
Fidgeting with the edges of Sebastian's jacket for lack of having anything else to do, Ruben frowns as he considers where he'll go. His estate is out of the question, even if there is anything of it left standing, as MOBIUS will likely have it under surveillance. This also means he can't go to any of the outlying areas with a connection to him, no matter how tenuous it might be, so it is probably best that he stay in Krimson City.
"Hey."
He snaps out of his musings and looks at Sebastian to find the detective reaching for him, only for him to freeze as Ruben focuses on him. He blinks a couple of times then registers that the door on Sebastian's side is open, meaning that they must have reached their destination while he got lost in his thoughts.
"We're here," Sebastian states as he lowers his hand, and Ruben inclines his head slightly to signal that he understands. The detective stares at him for a moment, his expression that same indecipherable one from earlier, before he turns and gets out.
Ruben follows him out of the cruiser and shivers as he steps onto the cold, wet sidewalk in front of a modest, three-story red brick building. He recognizes it from his glimpses into Sebastian's mind and starts shuffling towards the entrance while the detective sends off the cruiser.
