Bonds of Misery
-Chapter Four; Betrayal-
Riki body slammed the black creature he encountered into the ground. He thought that he had managed to disable it for sure, but it continued to rise up from the dirty streets in relentless fashion. Dumbfounded, he backed away from the heartless, only to step within reach of two Neo Shadows that immediately latched onto his body.
"Get off me!" he roared as he attempted to elbow and buck his way to freedom, only to find the darkness relentlessly stuck on him. He sobered up quickly as he realized the difficulty of escape.
"He said get off!"
Riki recognized Sora's voice, and no sooner did he turn towards it did something come whizzing over his shoulder. Whatever it was clobbered the creature that was grabbing him and gave him a chance to get away. He brutally slammed his boot on the foot of the second Neo Shadow gripping his jacket and finally broke free. He took the opportunity to run to Sora's side and turn around to see who he was going to destroy for assaulting him.
When he saw the weaving, sinister bodies of heartless staring back at them with yellow eyes, the will for payback diminished significantly. "Your monsters?" he asked Sora in a tight voice.
Sora extended his hand to the side and his keyblade returned to him in a flash of sparkling light. "Yeah. Stay back, I'll handle this."
Riki spat derisively to the ground. "I owe them for touching me. An eye for an eye, and throw in meat and bone. That's the way of the slums."
In that moment, Sora saw in Riki the same bravery that he encountered in world after world: People who didn't have keyblades but were willing to fight the darkness anyway. Even in a place as messed up as this one, his friend still found a reason to stand up. It renewed his own sense of pride as a keyblade master and drive to see his mission through to the end. "Then let's do this!" he said with a grin.
There were three Neoshadows ahead of them. Riki picked up a jarred piece of cement from the ground and Sora slanted his keyblade offensively. They charged at the enemies with reckless abandon, Riki yelling at the top of his lungs and Sora emphatically echoing it. The cement was smashed into a Neoshadow's face, knocking it back under the sheer force of Riki's strength and will. Sora cleaved the one he encountered in half, dispatching it immediately. Then he reached over to grasp Riki's forearm and pull him out of the way just before one of the remaining Neo Shadows clawed him.
He used his grip to spin Riki in a circle. The keyblade responded to their intent and surrounded their bodies in a plume of energy. Sora circled his friend three more times before releasing him like a cannonball. Riki went flying with his foot outstretched in a kick, and he punched through the last Neoshadows as if he was knocking down dominos. They immediately vanished and gave up their hearts to the sky.
Unable to believe what just happened, Riki crouched in the wake of the dark fog, gasping for air. Then he stood up and whirled to face Sora. "What did you do to me? What is that thing?" He pointed in the direction of the keyblade.
"Er.." Realizing the situation, Sora hid his keyblade behind his back and made it disappear. "Just a thing I use for getting rid of monsters, heh."
"Who are you really?" demanded Riki. "Are you with the police?" He grabbed the lapels of Sora's jacket. There was something wild and alarming in his eyes. A desperation that had not been there before. "Did he send you to spy on me?"
Sora reflexively grabbed Riki's wrists to keep from getting choked. The way his friend suddenly changed was confusing to him. "You mean Daryl?"
That name stopped Riki cold. His hands seemed to lose their strength as he regarded Sora with wide eyes. "What did you say?"
"Daryl," repeated Sora. He took this moment to pull Riki's hands off his clothes. "I met him on my ship. He said he wanted me to help you."
"He's alive?" Riki seemed to be in deep shock over this. He took a few steps away from Sora, as if he needed to space himself away from this new information.
"Yeah, he helped me to get on this world. He put this thing in my ear and told me how to get on a shuttle. He said that if I run into you, that I should look out for you. Riki the Dark." Sora smiled as he relayed this information.
"He's off-world?" clarified Riki. "Can you get me there?"
"I can try," answered Sora. "I still haven't really figured out how I'm going to get back up there myself." He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "I'm kind of hoping that my friend comes through for me for that part."
"I'll pay you to take me with you," said Riki seriously. "Name your price."
"Hah?" Sora gave Riki an odd look. "Why would you have to pay me?"
"Because nothing is for free," answered Riki tensely. "I want off this planet, and I want to disappear permanently."
Sora wished he could say he was surprised by Riki's request, but given the state of the world, he couldn't really blame him. "Are you sure you want to do that? What about your friends? What about Guy?"
"They are better off without me," he said coolly. "I left them for three years, and they survived."
"They might need you more than you think," said Sora wistfully. He remembered a time when his own best friend may have thought those same things. "What if you leave for now, and then come back for them later?"
Riki cursed. He seemed to be fighting something within himself. A decision split between fear and loyalty. "Fair enough. I can smuggle them out later." It was the answer that Sora wanted to hear. It was the answer that he wanted to say. It wasn't a solution that he thought he could pull off. Especially since the first step of leaving the planet was so difficult.
Sora looked at Riki for a few long moments. He seemed different to him. When he was with the other Bison members, he radiated strength and charisma. Now, he could see an anguish in him that was hiding behind all of those things.
An intrusive slew of memories bombarded Sora. Those times when he felt low enough to be pulled down to his knees flashed before his eyes. Before Saix, before Xehanort, before the demon horde, and so many other incidences where he was filled with frustration at his fate. It all came to him so vividly that he could feel the dirt and pressure grinding against his legs.
He tried to shake it off. He had to keep it together. "I'll help you," he said with an easy smile, one that hid his own turmoil. "But first I have to do what I came here to do. After that, we'll go together."
Riki gave a curt nod. He looked around to check to see if they were being watched, and then said, "Don't trust anyone." Then he popped up the collar of his jacket and walked off.
Sora watched him go, noting that his dragging walk had now changed to one with a little more pep and purpose. He smiled to himself. In the end, he had been able to help Riki after all. At least he managed to do one good thing on this planet.
{{-----------------------------------------------}}
From that moment on, Sora's relationship with Riki changed. He was acknowledged and spoken to as if he were a true member of Bison. The other members followed their leader and became relaxed around the newcomer, except Guy. He was more irritable and would often send glares in his direction.
The situation with Guy was awkward for Sora. He tried not to pay too much attention to the man's obvious jealousy, especially since it was unjustified. There was only friendship between himself and the leader of Bison. However, there were times that made him wonder, like when he would be leaning against a wall and Riki would casually approach him and plant his hand beside his head. Sometimes the black haired boy would lean in to impart some information or a joke, and he would be close enough for Sora to smell the cigarettes on his breath and count the filaments of midnight that cut through the irises of his brown eyes. The low timbre of his voice would draw his attention and elicit a slow, heavy thump of his heart.
What am I feeling?
Sora was no stranger to attraction, but his hectic life made it impossible to process what that meant. Kairi was the first. She inspired a shy joy that swelled up from his stomach and tingled down to his fingers and toes. Then there was Cloud. He couldn't take his eyes off him the first time they met. The stoic soldier made him want to puff up and become stronger just to be noticed. Leon was annoying at first, but more often than not, Sora found himself wanting to copy everything he did just to gain his favor. Hercules, Aladdin, Auron, and so many others, their comradery brought out the part of him that wanted to do better and be respected by them.
The girls he met made him feel very protective. Xion and Namine most of all. Sometimes he would seek them out for the sole purpose of having their attention. He liked to hear their voices and the way they affectionately touched him. It was a craving he couldn't explain.
Axel, Aqua, Terra, Ven, and Roxas - they made him feel as if he was among family. At times they got into quarrels and needed time apart, but he was compelled to keep them solidly in his life. He couldn't explain why he needed them; he just knew that he couldn't be without them. It was a desperate feeling that made him want to move worlds just to mend whatever schism was between them.
Then of course, Riku. They were inseparable in childhood, and unhappy when apart. Even though they now had a fun and joyful relationship, there were times when Sora wanted nothing more than to feel his best friend's strong arms around him, holding him until he melted. Ever since that embarrassing time at Disney Land, he'd been struggling to find a way to tell him about his deepest yearning.
Sora didn't know what any of those feelings meant, only that he had them. They were warm connections that his heart made to others, each attachment different and unique in its own way. What he had with Riki was like a thin, hot wire that sat low below his navel. It made his pupils dilate and his mouth feel a little dry. He was thirsty, but for what?
"Are you regretting saying no to me yet?" Riki whispered next to Sora's ear.
Sora jumped from the shock of feeling his breath so close to him. He skittered away from Riki, who was looking at him as if he knew what he was thinking. "Don't say weird things like that!" he complained.
Riki grinned and passed his hand over his jet black hair. The choppy layers fell back over his eyes and cheeks, accentuating the mix of boyish looks and strong jawline, and Sora once again found himself wondering what is this feeling.
"Do my eyes deceive me? Is that Kirie?" said Luke in disbelief.
Ever since they visited Midas, Kirie had made himself scarce. He left his flat early in the morning and sometimes arrived two days later, completely drunk and crowing about the beautiful people he slept with. His apartment quickly filled up with nice clothes and expensive items, and he spent very little time with Bison anymore. Sora didn't know what to think of it. Thankfully, his roommate had programmed the door so that he could still have a place to stay while he was away, but considering how he was treating his friends, Sora was surprised that he had not been kicked out yet.
This time, Kirie showed up with a new toy - a brand new, cherry red aerocar that had everyone turning their heads to look at it. There was no greater symbol of luxury than to be flying one, especially when contrasted against the broken slums. The Bison members came out of their hideout to admire the acquisition, all except Riki. He hung back and shot a derisive look at the vehicle.
The door to the aerocar was opened vertically to reveal Kirie in the driver's seat, garbed in expensive furs and sunglasses. "Hey losers!" he said cheerfully. "I'm here to pick up Sora."
"Me?" Sora pointed at himself as if to make certain that he heard right. There had been no previous plans to spend time with his roommate that he knew of.
Kirie lowered his sunglasses, revealing his oddly colored eyes and a hint of a calculated flirtation. "It's about time we went on a date."
A chorus of hooting and hollering came from the men at that declaration. Sora could feel an embarrassed flush starting at his neck and go all the way up to his ears. He glanced around and saw Riki among all the cheering faces, wearing a serious expression.
Don't trust anybody, said the fierce look in his eyes.
Kirie patted the seat next to him in a boisterous way. "Come on Sora, you're not going to stand me up are you?"
"Fine, but you better not do anything weird," relented Sora. He reluctantly climbed into the aerocar, unable to help but feel a little impressed by the machinery.
"See you later," said Kirie to the others, although his eyes lingered on Riki. His smile was cold as the doors lowered and sealed with a pressurized hum. The car levitated off the ground and soundlessly cut through the air away from the hideout.
Inside, the lights from the console bathed their bodies in a light blue. It reminded Sora of the glow of Tron's world. He looked at Kirie's profile, wondering what sort of game he was playing now. "Where are you taking me?" he asked curiously.
"I'm taking you somewhere you've wanted to go for a long time," Kirie answered with a casual smile. "Neal Darts. I found a way for you to get in."
Those words infused Sora with excited hope. If he could get into that area, then he could finally end the stalemate in his mission. "Seriously? You have no idea what this means to me."
"Oh I know. You should suck my dick in thanks," said Kirie with an airy grin. At the sour look on Sora's face, he added with a laugh. "I'm kidding, kidding! I know a pet who would do it way better than you."
Sora had nothing to say to that. The aerocar coasted across Ceres, easily flying past the decay and ruin until it landed just a few feet shy of Neal Darts. There was no gate or sign to delineate where this section began or ended, only a bizarre mix of illegally constructed buildings that towered so high into the sky and at angles so odd that no light could penetrate the canopy of urban blight.
When they exited the aerocar, Kirie threw a pair of goggles over to Sora, which he easily caught. "There's your pass," he explained. "Those are night vision enabled. No matter how far in you go, you'll be able to see now. Not that I recommend it. I heard that there's some shit in there that will make the hair on your body shrivel up and fall off."
"Nothing I haven't seen before," said Sora dryly. He thought he saw his share of horrific things that lived in the dark by now. Then his tone changed to one of sincerity. "Kirie.. thanks. It means a lot that you did this for me."
"I already told you how you can thank me," he deadpanned in return.
Sora started walking towards the maze of buildings, but before he entered the shadows, he turned to face his friend. "You know, you don't have to try so hard to make friends. They already liked you, even before the car and the clothes and all that stuff."
Kirie seemed stunned a moment, and then his expression settled to something more blank. "Don't be so sappy, Sora. It's not a good look."
Sora shrugged his shoulders in a helpless way, and then he bravely walked into Neal Darts. His body quickly melted into the shadows cast by the buildings.
For a few moments, Kirie stared into the space where Sora disappeared, and then muttered, "If you liked me so much, then both you and Riki should have begged to suck me off."
The space around his car began to fill other aerocars - ones marked with the insignia of the Midas police. They approached silently with their sirens off and parked next to Kirie's, three deep on each side. The doors opened and a dozen men wearing black suits, helmets equipped with night vision and infrared cameras came pouring out. Their shock sticks hung at their waists, ready to be used. They began walking to Neal Darts.
"Have fun gentlemen," said Kirie with a flippant wave of his hand. Then he got back into his fancy aerocar and flew off, leaving the police to hunt for their prey.
{{-----------------------------------------------}}
When it became pitch black, Sora pulled the goggles over his head. They immediately turned on, and it took a few moments for his eyes to adjust to the green cast of the monitor. He cautiously made his way through the unfamiliar terrain on high alert for any heartless or signs of the keyhole.
Without a clear view of the sky above, the place felt claustrophobic. It only took a few turns through the winding buildings to become utterly lost in the maze. A part of Sora wanted to panic, but then he thought of Aqua and how she endured the dangers and complete darkness for years until she was rescued. If she could make it that long then Sora was sure that he could survive at least one day, so he pushed forwards with determination.
The place wasn't empty. It had its fair share of derelicts, just like the rest of Ceres. However these people were different. They had cybernetic eyes and limbs, or grotesque deformities. They disappeared in and out of side doors and secret spaces like roaches skittering from the light. Some were passed out on the streets, others openly masturbating as they peered into holes marked with alien writing and an icon that looked like wrapped candy. Sora had fought his share of battles in some of the most bleak and existential of places, but the depravity and stench of Neal Darts repulsed him in a way he never felt before.
When a horde of heartless bled up from the streets to attack him, he almost felt a sense of relief. Not only was the enemy familiar, but it justified him coming to such a disgusting place. The people who witnessed the arrival of the monsters quickly disappeared; not a single soul offered to give Sora any help.
"Fine by me," he muttered to himself. Sora threw himself into the fray, his keyblade flashing as if to reflect how eager he was to distract himself from the nastiness of Neal Darts by taking it out on the Heartless. He bounced off the weird curves of the buildings to take out the ones in flight and lit up the artificial night with plumes of fire. Section by section, he cleared every enemy that he found and followed their trail until it led to an underground passageway.
The smell was familiar - it was just like the tunnels they used to get to Mistral Park. On the walls, Sora found an old, crumbling map. After squinting for several long moments, he realized that the passageway did in fact lead to the same park, and beyond that - an area called Tanagura.
Tanagura. Could that be where they are coming from? It would be just his luck if that was true. Daryl had warned him about going there.
Sora heard a rattle come from the distance. The keyblade was slanted across his shoulders and he ran inside, ready to face whatever it was. He found a single creature hopping down the tunnels; its long, snakelike body tethered to a pot that scraped the floor every time it moved. It had a large head with bat-like wings sticking out from the sides, and a gaping mouth from which a black face with a gleeful expression leered.
"No way," said Sora in shock. "A Flowersnake? Here?" He carefully edged his way closer, and sure enough, he could see an Unversed insignia emblazoned on the pot that the creature was dragging.
When he had been rescued and returned to his home, Sora got to spend some time with Ventus, who in turn told him about Vanitas. It had been a long, sad story that made him feel sorry for his doppelganger. One of the things that struck him was the fact that every unversed represented a fledging emotion. He first saw a Flowersnake at Monstropolis, and to this day, he couldn't figure out what it represented. What sort of negative emotion would make such a gleeful expression?
Curiosity made him follow the creature deeper into the tunnels instead of vanquishing it. They went about 100 yards in when he realized that the place wasn't empty. There was a man sleeping on the ground, surrounded by empty bottles of hallucinogenic liquor. The Flowersnake was heading right for him.
Sora quickly sprang into action. He took a flying leap behind the Unversed and cleaved it in half on the downstroke, causing it to vanish in a wash of darkness. With the danger gone, he looked over at the man and asked, "Are you okay?"
The bum didn't answer, not that Sora expected him to. With a sigh, he resumed walking through the tunnels.
Unbeknown to him, the man lifted one of his hands and pressed a button on a device that was hidden away in his palm.
The ground beneath Sora erupted upwards as a large net previously disguised under dust and debris folded around him. "What!?" he cried out as metal ropes looped around him and buzzed loudly with an electrical discharge. Every bone in his body was rattled instantly.
"He's still holding his weapon!"
Sora distantly heard the sound of voices and footsteps surrounding him. His goggles were malfunctioning and all he could see was static. His body felt sluggish and his head hurt badly. Deliriously, he wondered why Donald was taking so long to cast Curaga.
"Drop your weapon!"
Several shock sticks were poked through the net to taser Sora into submission. He let out a loud scream until the keyblade fell from his hands and shattered into nothing on the ground. Then, a different sort of darkness overtook him as he passed out.

Raoul strode through the hallways of the Midas Police Center. Every now and then, the sounds of someone being brutally beaten and doors slamming made him wrinkle his nose. He couldn't understand how anyone could deal with this sort of place. It was disgusting in comparison to the impeccably clean and orderly corridors of his lab.
Walking beside him was the man that Sora had encountered in the tunnels. He was still dressed drably in tattered clothing, but he held his body erect in an elegant way, as if he was a prince among paupers.
"How long do you intend to keep looking like that?" asked Raoul with distaste. "You smell disgusting."
His companion pressed his eyelids together in a long blink, and his short, scraggly hair transformed into a long veil of blond that went past his hips like a curtain. When he next opened his eyes, they had turned from a dull black to a crisp blue. "Better?" asked Iason.
"I can tell that you enjoyed masquerading as a Sleeper," said Raoul with a disapproving frown. "You should have just let the Darkmen do all of the dirty work."
"I wanted to observe your new toy," answered Iason. "You've never asked me for such a large favor before. I wanted to handle it personally."
They arrived at a closed door that was guarded by two Darkmen. They bowed respectfully to the Blondies and used their credentials to grant them entry. Inside was a room bathed in the muted blue glow of large computer monitors. The hum of heavy machinery whirred all around them. There was a chair at the center of it all, surrounded by medical instruments, retinal scanners and small lasers. Slumped on top of it was Sora, who breathing shallowly with his eyes mostly closed. Arm and leg cuffs restrained him, and an IV hooked into his right arm pumped enough sedative to keep him in a twilight state.
The room switched to active mode when the blondies entered. The walls lit up with biometric data that cataloged everything about Sora, down to his DNA. Raoul took a seat across from the captive and activated the mind protocols using the console.
"My preliminary research has determined that this boy is quite ordinary, at least on a genetic level. There is no evidence of recoding that I can detect. A full body scan reveals no implants or enhancements other than his fake PAM," reported Raoul. "Otherwise he is in perfect health. I can't find a single injury asides from those inflicted by the shock eyes and net. It's completely at odds with what you reported."
"Prior to his apprehension, he faced an entire horde of those mutants that we have been monitoring," commented Iason. "He single handedly destroyed them using a key-shaped beam weapon. When we tried to confiscate it, it self-destructed. His constitution is also on a par with ours. It took 100,000 volts over 5 cycles from three shock eyes to render him unconscious, and that was after he was immobilized with the shock net. I find it hard to believe that he is only human."
"Let us delve deeper then," said Raoul with smile. He waved his hand over the monitor, and a single ray of light focused on Sora's right eye. "Wake up, Sora."
Slowly, Sora opened his blue eyes. The sedation kept them lidded, and his voice was slurred as he spoke. "Where am I... what happened..."
"You are currently in the interrogation room of the Midas Police Center. A truth serum is being used on you. The last time we met, you were holding a lot back. This time, I want to hear all about you. It will be useless to resist," said Raoul with a cold smile. "Who are you really?"
The monitors registered an increase in Sora's heart and respiratory rate. This wasn't information he was allowed to give; he had to keep world order. He opened his mouth to refute everything, but to his horror, words tumbled out that he couldn't control. "I'm a keyblade wielder."
The blondies looked intrigued. Raoul leaned forwards with great interest. "What is a keyblade wielder?"
"Someone who uses a keyblade."
"What for?"
"To fight the darkness."
The blondies exchanged looks. Iason looked particularly amused. "It seems that he is as simple minded as he looks."
Perplexed, Raoul initiated the holographic display, which quickly filled the room with amorphous bubbles of light. If Sora couldn't explain properly, then perhaps he could imagine it. "We'll switch to a visual representation," he announced, before directing his next question to the captive. "What is the darkness?"
The room was filled with several representations of heartless. There were so many that even miniaturized they crowded as far as the eye could see.
"The mutants," commented Iason. "It seems that he has dealt with them before."
"Sora, were you created to fight these creatures?" asked Raoul with interest.
"No. I was chosen."
"By who?"
"The light."
"Who is the light?"
"I don't know."
The holograms around them showed blank imagery. Raoul grinned. "Even now, you remain as mysterious as ever."
"I don't have the time to watch your foreplay with this outsider," groused Iason. "Dump his memory and wipe his mind. We'll sort through the details later."
"Very well," said Raoul with a sigh. "We'll start by removing his ego. Sora, show me what is most important to you."
The room filled with a singular image: a shoreline, where three persons were laying on the sand with their eyes closed and hands clasped with each other. Sora was recognizable as the person in the middle. To his left was an older boy with platinum hair, and to his right was a girl with auburn hair. The scene was cast in golden light, conveying the tranquility and importance that this scene held to the center of his psyche.
"To think that taking away something this simple and mediocre could unravel someone so completely," commented Raoul. "Humans are so inferior." He waved his hand over the console to begin downloading this memory.
The scene flickered as if it was receiving a bad reception, and went completely white. Then it changed to something unexpected - a series of white opalescent chains wrapping across the room in loud clanks. Bewildered, Raoul began sliding his hands through the heads up display.
"What is happening?" demanded Iason.
"A stack overflow," answered Raoul with a look of consternation. "The system is being overloaded."
"Impossible," said Iason.
The chains continued to wrap around the room, over and over again, and a young, female voice spoke through the speakers with emphasis:
You will not hurt Sora!!
There was a fizzle as the electronics overloaded and gave off plumes of smoke. The fire suppression system activated and sent foam into the room to stifle the heat before it became a blaze. In all the chaos, Sora remained at the center of it all, asleep and wearing a contented smile as he dreamed of his most important thing.

The main doors to the manor of the Land of Departure flew open. Namine quickly made her way down the staircase to the floor level, her face pinched with grim determination. She rushed over to the plaza, where Terra and Ventus were currently practicing their drills.
When they saw the girl approaching, they stopped what they were doing to give her a concerned look. "What's up?" asked Ventus when she finally managed to reach them.
Namine doubled over to catch her breath, but the moment she was able to speak again, she raised her head and shouted, "Sora is in trouble!"
