“So you’re... who again?” Rottytops questioned, staring into a certain redhead’s eyes. The zombie sat on the couch, relaxing in her black pajamas and shorts. Apart from her sat a woman of similar age, wearing a pair of white pajamas and pants.
“Holly Lingerbean,” Holly answered sternly. The two had been roommates for a couple of days now and it nagged Holly to end that nobody except for Shantae could remember her name.
“Not ringing any bells,” Rotty said with a shrug, laying back against the couch. “Sorry,” she spoke apathetically.
“Ugh,” Holly groaned, throwing her arms into the air. “Has Shantae really never mentioned me before?”
“Hey, guys!” Shantae interrupted, tapping the duo on the shoulders. She leaped over the couch and landed between the two. Much like Holly, she wore a pair of white pajamas and pants.
“Hey, snack cakes,” Rotty greeted with a smirk, pressing her lips against a particular, flustered half-genie.
“What kind of nickname is snack cakes?” Holly questioned, raising a confused eyebrow.
“The annoying kind,” Shantae said nervously, attempting to hide her blushing w
“I know you love it,” Rotty said deviously, pecking her once more and causing Shantae to giggle.
“Will you two shut up?” Risky snapped from her sleeping bag on the ground next to them. “I’m trying to sleep.”
“Maybe you should find someplace else to sleep,” Holly suggested underneath her breath.
“What was that?” Risky, pulling her head up angrily.
“Nothing!” Holly insisted, waving her hands frantically.
“That’s what I thought,” Risky murmured, laying her head back down. She cover
“Come on, guys,” Shantae said in a concerned tone. “Let’s try to get along,”
“Last time we did that, Rotty gave me a wedgie.” Holly stated, crossing her arms while staring at a bored zombie.
“Well, sorry Harley,” Rotty replied, waving her off.
“It’s Holly!” Holly yelled, her face turning redder than Shantae’s.
“Whatever,” Rotty said, rolling her eyes.
“Come on, you two!” Shantae demanded, placing her hands to her hips. “We’re roommates now. We need to get along.”
“Fine,” Rotty grumbled, resting her head on her elbows.
“I’ve got an idea!” Shantae exclaimed, snapping her fingers. “How about a little bonding exercise? Have any of you ever played truth or dare?”
“It’s been a long time, but yes,” Holly answered.
“I’ve heard of it,” Rotty replied, shaking her head. “That’s the one where you spin the bottle, right?”
“Yep,” Shantae. “Risky, do you want to join us?”
“No,” Risky muttered, turning over to avoid Shantae’s gaze.
“Please?” Shantae pleaded, walking up to Risky. She fluttered her eyes charmingly, putting on a sweet smile. “You can have my leftovers from the restaurant.”
“I already ate that,” Risky grumbled.
“What?!” Shantae shouted, her eyes snapping open. “I was saving that for tomorrow!”
“You snooze, you lose,” Risky said with indifference.
“She’s got a point,” Rotty admitted.
“Risky, come on. Just play the game with us,” Shantae implored the pirate, clasping her hands together.
“I don’t want to,” Risky muttered, pulling the blanket over her eyes.
“Pretty please?” Shantae.
“You’re not going to drop this, are you?” Risky asked, letting out a groan.
“Are you going to join us?” Shantae asked excitedly, fidgeting at the prospect.
“Fine,” Risky stated, pulling herself out of the sleeping bag and standing up. She looked around, searching for a specific object. “Any of you got a bottle?”
“I do!” Shantae, pulling out an empty beer bottle. “I keep it around for cases like these!”
“That’s being over prepared,” Holly murmured, dumbfounded by Shantae’s sudden response. “And where did you get that bottle from?”
“Magic!” Shantae announced, waving her hands joyfully.
Holly shuddered as memories of Squid Baron popped into her brain.
Risky tugged at her pajama bottoms, struggling to walk in the clothing. “You know, you really should buy bigger pajamas,” the pirate huffed. She, as well as Holly, had been given an extra pair of pajamas by the half-genie, identical to Shantae’s present attire. The only difference was that Shantae and Holly currently wore their hair down while Risky kept hers hidden beneath a red-and-white striped cap. “These ones barely fit.”
“You can blame your big butt for that,” Rotty said with a snort, pulling herself off the couch.
“What was that?!” Risky roared, stomping her feet against the ground.
“You heard me,” Rotty stated, her grin widening as Risky grew even angrier.
“Both of you, stop it,” Shantae snapped, her sudden shift in tone surprising the pirate and the zombie. “Let’s just play the game.”
“Fine,” Risky grumbled, sitting down and crossing her legs as Rotty did the same.
“They don’t even fit me,” Holly murmured, noticing that her pants kept falling down. She struggled to keep them up, tightening the drawstrings. However, the pants still remained loose. She let out a defeated sigh, letting herself crumple to the floor.
“No one asked you,” Risky.
“Ugh,” Shantae groaned, placing her left hand to her forehead while she was sitting down. “Risky, can you not pick a fight for once in your life?” she asked the pirate before she turned to her girlfriend on her right. “And Rotty, stop making fun of her. Neither of you are helping the situation.” She turned to the last member of the party. “And Holly... you’re actually doing pretty good so far.”
“Really?” Holly asked, her jaw dropping in amazement. “Wow. That means...”
“Let’s just get this over with!” Risky interrupted, grabbing the bottle and spinning it. The bottle rotated several times, passing each group member before slowing down. The bottle ticked past Risky and Shantae before it stopped in front of Rottytops. “Rotty,” Risky murmured, realizing her opponent. “Of course,” she grumbled before she shook away her anger. “Truth or dare?”
“Truth,” Rotty replied smugly.
Risky paused for a moment, searching the outer regions of her mind for a truly staggering question. A devious grin pursed her lips when she had found her treasure. “Does Shantae do anything that makes you feel embarrassed?”
“Wait, what?” Shantae asked, beginning to blush.
“Uh...” Rotty stumbled, struggling to speak. She had never thought much about what embarrassed her when she was around Shantae. She scratched her head nervously as she spat out the words. “Well... I get embarrassed by how much she looks over me.”
“What do you mean?” Shantae asked, a tinge of guilt striking her heart.
Rotty sighed, realizing there was no way she could avoid this. “You kind of feel like a supervisor at times more than anything,” Rotty admitted nervously. “I know that I need guidance here and there and I appreciate it, especially recently,” she murmured, gesturing towards Risky. “But I think I can figure things out now, you know?”
“Yeah, but I can’t help but help you,” Shantae said with a laugh, rubbing her hand through her own hair. “It’s kind of who I am.”
“I know,” Rotty said with a chuckle.
“Interesting,” Risky murmured, studying the giggling faces of the couples before turning to Holly. “Your turn, Harley.”
“Holly,” Holly grunted, spinning the bottle. The flask whirled around, picking up speed for several seconds before finally slowing down and pointing to a particular zombie. “Rotty. Truth or dare?”
“Dare,” Rotty answered confidently.
“Say my name right,” Holly demanded through gritted teeth. “If you don’t, I’m giving you a wedgie.”
“Oh, um...” Rotty murmured, scratching her chin. “Don’t tell me. I can get this...”
“I just said my name not even a minute ago!” Holly yelled, her face being crimson with rage.
“Heather...?” Rotty guessed, putting on a worried grin.
“No!” Holly shouted, angrilly pulling at her hair. “How hard is it to get my name right?!”
“I think it’s pretty easy honestly,” Shantae admitted casually. “Holly Lingerbean.”
“Yes! Someone got it right!” Holly exclaimed, jumping to her feet. “Thank you, Shantae!”
“Why are you so freaked out about people not knowing your name?” Risky asked, raising a confused eyebrow.
“I will literally die if people forget who I am!” Holly shouted, stomping her bare feet hashly against the ground. “I was born a mutant that leads me to living off other’s memories just to survive! I need at least one person to remember me or else I’m dead!”
“Ok...” Risky murmured, a bit unnerved by Holly’s anger. “Holly, right?”
“Yes,” Holly answered, astounded that somebody besides Shantae had finally remembered her. “You have no idea how much that means to me,” she stated happily, wrapping her arms around Risky.
The pirate groaned, resisting the urge to push Holly away. The latter eventually freed her grip on Risky and turned to face a certain zombie. “Anyhoo, Rotty... I’m giving you that wedgie!”
“Fine,” Rotty said with a shrug, standing up and turning around for Holly. “If it’ll make you happy.” Holly’s fingers eagerly wrapped themselves around a pink waistband peeking above Rotty’s shorts. With a heave, Holly laughed as she lifted Rotty into the air. “Ack!” the zombie yelped, feeling the fabric launch up her back. Holly continued to giggle, bouncing Rotty up and down numerous times. A devious smirk appeared on Holly’s face as she gave one last heave, tearing the fabric in half and letting Rotty smack into the ground. “You didn’t have to rip them...” Rotty grumbled, snatching the torn fabric from Holly’s hands.
“That’s for earlier!” Holly exclaimed, placing her hands to her hips.
“Wait... forgetting your name or giving you a wedgie?” Rotty questioned, scratching her head.
“Both!” Holly said between giggles, slapping her knee and annoying Rotty further.
“I guess it’s my turn,” Shantae said with a shrug, giving the bottle a spin. The flask circled the quartet, passing each lady before stopping in front of the Queen of the Seven Seas. “Risky. Truth or dare?”
“Truth,” Risky answered, resting her chin against the knuckles. I’m not dealing with getting a wedgie,” Risky.
“I wouldn’t do that to you,” Shantae assured her.
“Sure,<.i>” Risky stated, not believing her for a minute and recounting the time the half-genie and Rotty had teamed up against the pirate to give her an atomic.
“What made you turn over a new leaf?” Shantae asked, stunning the pirate.
Risky looked down at her feet, her cheeks changing from its normal purple into a crimson red. “I’m not sure,” she admitted hesitantly, clenching her fists.
Her old master’s words echoed in her brain. You’re so weak, Risky. The pirate quickly wiped away the stream of tears pouring down her face, surprising Shantae and the others. However, that could not stop the tainted memories from invading her mind. If you keep this act up, you’ll be dead in no time. You’ll just be another body in the grave and nobody will remember you.<.i>
“I want... something better,” Risky muttered weaky, crossing her arms.
“Well, you’re at the right place,” Shantae replied eagerly. “I always knew there was good in you.”
“You are way too forgiving,” Risky observed suspiciously.
“I’ve made more friends than enemies that way,” Shantae pointed out before she planted a kiss on Rotty’s cheek. “And sometimes... more than that.”
Rotty grinned as she turned to Holly. “And what about you, Holly?” Rotty. “Why are you suddenly a good guy?”
“So I can stay alive,” Holly stated, exasperated by Rotty’s ignorance. “Haven’t you been paying attention?”
“Oh yeah,” Rotty said weakly. “Sorry. It’s kind of hard to remember what you say.”
“Ugh,” Holly whined. “I’m starting to see that...”
“Your turn, Rotty,” Shantae offered, pointing cheerfully to the bottle.
“Ok.” Rotty wrapped her fingers around the bottle. She gave it a quick twirl, watching excitedly as the bottle
Shantae. Truth or dare?” Rotty asked.
“Dare,” Shantae.
“Let me give you a wedgie,” Rotty said smugly. “And you have to stay in the wedgie for the rest of the game.”
“I should have seen that coming,” Shantae admitted with a sigh. “Eeep!” she exclaimed, feeling her white flame-printed undergarments being yanked up by the sides. Rotty giggled as she watched the fabric soar past Shantae’s shoulders.
“Perfect,” Rotty stated, hooking the fabric over the half-genie’s shoulders, placing Shantae between a rock and a hard place.
“Stop staring back there!” Shantae barked, her face becoming redder than a tomato.
“Sorry, I got a bit distracted,” Rotty apologized. “How’s it feel?”
“Tight,” Shantae squeaked.
“I would figure,” Rotty said with a laugh. “Your turn, Risky.”
The Queen of the Seven Seas gave the bottle a spin, watching it spin with boredom until the flask found its target. “Holly. Truth or dare?” Risky questioned.
“Truth?” Holly answered confidently.
“Way to make things boring,” Risky said apathetically. “Why do you think people should remember you?”
Holly’s left eye began to twitch as she struggled to contain her anger. “So I can live!” she shouted. “Has nobody been listening to me?”
“That’s not the only reason,” Risky asserted. “What other reasons do you have?”
“I don’t want to be forgotten,” Holly conceded. “I want to have a legacy. If I’m forgotten, then everything I’ve ever done will have been for nothing. Do you ever feel like that?”
“All the time,” Risky admitted as she stood up. “I think we’re done.”
Phew,” Shantae murmured, freeing herself of her trap and stuffing her undergarments back into her pants.
“I thought you liked playing this game,” Rotty said serenely.
“Yeah, but I’m glad it’s over,” Shantae replied with a smile. “And I got a surprise for you. Close your eyes.”
“Okay,” Rotty, slowly shutting her eyes and expecting a kiss on the lips. “Ack!” she yelped, her eyes snapping open. She found the front portion of her undergarments being yanked up her stomach by a snickering Shantae.
“You’re not the only prankster around, Rotty,” the half-genie chuckled, releasing her grip and letting Rotty fix her underwear.
“No kidding,” Rotty said with a grin, stuffing the fabric back into her shorts. “Come here you...” she murmured, wrapping her arms around Shantae’s shoulders and connecting her lips ardently with Shantae’s. Shantae pressed her lips against Rotty’s in return, giggling all the way.
“Uh…” Risky murmured, interrupting their kiss. “Do you two need a room?”
“Sorry,” Shantae apologized, realizing she had gotten ahead of herself. “I really gotta stop doing that when people are around.”
Rotty let out a yawn as she started walking in the direction of her bedroom. “I think I’m going to turn in,” she replied. “Night.”
“That was pretty fun,” Shantae stated as she spun around to join the zombie. “See you two tomorrow.”
“Those two are very passionate, aren’t they?” Risky observed.
“No kidding,” Holly agreed. “I get that they love each other, but they don’t have to rub it in.” A smirk appeared on her face. “At least you all can remember my name now!”
“Yeah, Heather,” Risky snarked.
“Grr...” Holly grumbled through gritted teeth.
“I’m kidding, Holly,” Risky said with a smirk.
“Okay,” Holly said, letting out a sigh.
“And thanks,” Risky stated, patting Holly on the back.
“For what?” Holly questioned.
Risky took a deep breath, trying desperately not to screw up her next words. “Being open. I... appreciate it.”
A smile curved onto Holly’s lips. It had been a long time since someone genuinely appreciated her company. “Anytime,” she replied.
Risky nodded as she headed back to her sleeping bag. She snuck her way back into her sack, wrapping herself in her blanket and resting her head against her pillow. “Night.”
