Gasping, Starr pulled herself away from the dark elf and took a couple of shaky steps backward. Her face showed her discomfort from traveling by way of scroll. Fighting back the nausea the escape scrolls caused her, she forced herself to look around. Dread filled her as she took in her surroundings. “Where did you take me?” She breathed out in horror.
“Our village.” He replied, his voice grim. Thoughts raced through his head as the full ramifications for this action swiftly came to him. The worst outcome for him would be courtmarshal and dismissal from his military post. For her… Signicantly worse.
“Well, well, well.” Drawled a low voice.
Shin stiffened and stood in front of the light elf. “Nikvir…” He replied, voice stone cold.
Nikvir eyed the light elf behind Shin, eyes bright with malice. “What do we have here?” Trying to get a better look, he sidestepped the assassin quickly and moved to stand closer to the elven woman. “Getting a headstart aren’t you, Shin?” Reaching out a hand, intending on grabbing the light elf’s hair, Nikvir grunted in pained annoyance when Shin’s short dagger ripped through his robe, leaving a shallow cut in it’s wake.
“Leave her alone.” Hissed Shin warningly. He pushed back between Nikvir and Starr and then backed up, forcing her to back up as well while thinking rapidly. The howler in front of them was dangerous. If Nikvir decided to cause a problem, Shin would have a difficult time protecting Starr.
“Why are you back here? And with her?” Nikvir questioned curtly, dropping his facetious façade.
Deciding that in this case sticking to the truth as much as possible was the best course, Shin briefly explained what happened.
Starr’s gaze flickered back and forth between them as they spoke in dark elvish. But the gaze of the newcomer was unnerving. Unconciously, she shifted to place herself a little more behind Shin. The movement didn’t go unnoticed by the other dark elf and he smirked at her.
“Aww, it seems she’s rather fond of you. Why, just look at how she cowers behind you. It’s positively… Oh, what’s the human word?” Nikvir feigned deep thought for a moment before proclaiming with an overly exaggerated happy expression and tone. “Cute!” His face promptly fell back into it’s normal, hateful expression. “Pathetic.”
As the two males argued, Starr grew increasingly uncomfortable. Wishing she’d kept at least one escape scroll instead of eschewing them, she began studying her surroundings. The rough stone walls, floor, and ceiling meant they were inside the dark elven caverns. Strange symbols adorned the walls of the cavern. Looking more closely, she determined that the symbols had been both carved into the stone, and then ‘painted’ with blood. Repressing a gag, she returned her gaze to the males in time to see the mage turn on his heel and leave, uttering an obvious curse at Shin as he did so.
Turning to her, Shin refrained from uttering a choice phrase of his own at the predicament they were now in. “Come on. We need to find a friend of mine. Fast.” Nathavin was the only person who held a high enough rank to keep both of them out of trouble.

Nathavin gazed at the light elven woman as she slowly traversed the room, examining everything from the paintings of famous battles to the most ordinary of table decorations, his face a stoic mask. “How do you manage to land yourself in so much trouble in so short a time?” He asked Shin, his voice deadpan.
Shin shrugged. “It’s a gift.” His voice held a trace of amusement, also watching her. However, the amusement didn’t last as the gravity of the situation weighed heavily on him.
“A gift that’s caused more than it’s fair share of headaches.” Nathavin grumbled. “I can smooth this over with BaelAun and most of the Council. And I can also arrange it so that they will not punish you or kill her. But, you won’t like it.” His gaze caught and held Shin’s. “And neither will she.”
Tensing, Shin’s eyes narrowed. “What is your plan?”
Nathavin steeled himself and began speaking solemnly. “In private, you may treat her however you wish. But in public, you must treat her as a slave, as that would be her station if she’d been captured after the siege.”
Shin’s jaw clenched and he spoke through gritted teeth. “You’re right. I don’t like it.”
“It’s this or death for her.” Nathavin replied gravely.
Shin glared at Nathavin in angry frustration. “Is there any other way?”
Sighing, Nathavin shook his head. “I understand your anger. I don’t like this situation regarding the light elves any more than you do.”
Shin swore viciously. He’d saved from death only to have condemned her to a no less unpleasant fate.
“Shall I break the bad news to her?” Questioned Nathavin.
Meanwhile, Starr stayed silent throughout their conversation, just as Shin had asked her. However, that didn’t mean she wasn’t brimming with curiosity about their discussion. While they’d been deep in discussion, she’d taken the time to explore the room.
Shin shook his head. “No. I’ll do it.”
“I’ll leave you two to discuss it.” Nathavin said. “As a courtesy, I’ll arrange for the private quarters in the eastern wing of the clanhall to be vacated for your use.”
Shin nodded. “I’m still assigned to BaelAun’s regiment.”
“Not for much longer.” Nathavin answered. “Since you are now here, and the battle in light elven territory is fully underway, you can’t safely return there.”
Shin smiled softly. They both knew that was a lie. He most certainly could. He’d crossed far more dangerous battlefields undetected in the past and Nathavin was well aware of that fact since he’d ordered some of those crossings himself. “No, no I can’t.”
“And since you have found yourself back in our homelands, and with a companion, you must be reassigned to another unit, posthaste.” He paused and gazed at Shin seriously as a thought occurred to him.
“While I can state that you have acquired the light elf as a slave, you must be the one to convince them that she really is just that to you. That is going to be a hard sell given your reputation as a sympathizer. Do you think you can do that? If they suspect, even once, that she actually isn’t a slave, they will take great pleasure in killing both of you.”
Shin’s expression hardened in fierce determination. “I can do it.” He’d hate every second of it, but if that was what would keep her alive, then so be it. Nathavin left the room and Shin turned to Starr, bracing himself for her reaction. After he’d explained it to her, her reaction was just as he’d expected.
She yelled angrily, making use of a human profanity. “FUCK NO!”
Shin’s features darkened somewhat. Something about her use of the obscenity bothered him.
Immensely.
Unconsciously, he growled lowly in dark elven. “Language…”
