It had only been a couple of hours since they had gotten back from the well of sorrows, where Sirena had seen the dark magister again. Seeing him again was difficult for the American girl since his focus was on her. Her mind went back to that moment letting herself finally let her emotions go while she was alone. She never let anyone but Cullen and a few others see what her feelings were. Finally, being able to face her emotions, the young woman felt fear. His hatred and anger were towards her and it was far worse than putting up with online bullshit. He had petrified her making her his sole enemy because of the fake anchor she had during their first encounter. There was no denying it, she brought it on herself.
Wanting to get out of her head space, she left the chambers where she had been living in. For once the gossip in the Great Hall was welcomed. It gave her something to focus on instead of constantly thinking of what Corypheus planned. Already, she knew he wanted her dead, there was no mistaking that. With her quiet steps, she walked into the green courtyard towards the eluvian room when she heard a man’s voice.
“Though, all before me is shadow, yet the Maker shall be my guide. I shall not be left to wander the drifting roads of the beyond.” Sirena took a peek into the room and saw Cullen was kneeling down at the foot of the statue whom she assumed was Andraste. It was clear that he was praying. For what, she didn’t know. Silently, she stepped into the room not wanting to disturb him. “For there is no darkness in the Maker’s light and nothing that he wrought shall be lost.” Once she was behind him, his head slightly turned in her direction like he was acknowledging her presence.
“What is your prayer for?” The fake blonde asked as she continued to look at her man.
“For those we have lost…” There was a pause as she watched him shake his head. “And those I am about to lose.” Her brows furrowed as he stepped even closer to her. Sirena understood his fear immediately, but she wanted to know more about this fear he had.
“Afraid to lose? You’re afraid?” They may have been dumb questions, but in order to get a better understanding of what he was feeling, she had to ask.
“Of course, I am! Corypheus possessed that grey warden at Mythal. What more is he capable of? It’s only a matter of time before he retaliates. We must draw strength wherever we can.” Sirena watched as he stood up and walked towards her. Once he was in front of her, he faced her with a solemn look. “When the time comes, you will be thrown into his path again along with the Inquisitor. Andraste preserve me, I must send you to him.” Her eyes burned with tears as she listened to him. Even Cullen choked up talking about it. It was so hard for her to keep a brave face, but for his sake she had to, as challenging as it may be.
“There is nothing to worry about. I have luck on my side, remember?” Sirena always kept his coin on her person. It was a way for her to feel like he was always there with her when he couldn’t be. She heard him laugh softly, but it was obvious that he did not like the predicament they were in. Sadly, the American couldn’t even guarantee that she’d make it out alive.
“That’s less comforting than I’d hope.” At that moment she felt her lip was about to tremble. Quickly, the outlander moved into him and wrapped her arms around the commander. He was making it so hard to be brave and not cry. Soon enough, she felt his arm wrap around her waist tightly like he was getting comfort just by holding her. It was obvious to her that he was in panic due to being afraid of losing her. As he held her tightly, Cullen whispered in her ear. “Whatever happens, you will come back.” Sirena felt his breath against her neck as he remained close to her.
“Cullen, you don’t have to- “The American spoke softly as she felt a tear slide down her cheek. Her eyes closed as she held him more tightly.
“Allow me this.” It seemed they were both trying to leave out any thoughts where she didn’t return even if it was a high probability. At least she still had a chance at surviving. The outlander had come a long way from when she first started. “To believe anything else could happen… I can’t.” For a while, Sirena stood there with Cullen as they both comfort the other. The next mission was not going to be easy. When he finally separated himself from his lover, she looked up at the commander as he rested his hand against her cheek. There was a lot of worry in his amber eyes. Without stopping herself, she stepped on her tippy-toes and pressed her lips against his. She figured a kiss would be something they needed at that moment. It seemed the man she was with had no qualms about it since she felt him kiss her back with such tenderness. “I should get back to my duties as a commander. There is still much to be done.” All the outlander was able to do was nod her head. Before he left her, Cullen kissed her cheek.
Since dying was very possible for her, the American wanted to make sure she had everything lined up. Sirena walked past the courtyard, towards the Great Hall. There was someone she had to talk to. For her, there was no time to have small talk with anyone. She didn’t know how much time there was before Corypheus decided to retaliate. Up ahead, from where she was, the outlander saw the person whom she wanted to speak with. The young woman approached the table and sat down in a chair closest to the dwarf.
“Varric, can we talk please? It is something important.” It was clearly obvious he was hoping for a light hearted conversation, but her tone and the serious look on her face made him realize it wasn’t.
“Is everything alright, Sirena?” The blonde-haired woman shook her head no. At the moment, she was not okay.
“Well… I think everyone knows by now that Corypheus will have his focus on me instead of Evelyn. I want to make sure I have my basis covered in case…” She softly choked on her words. This topic was harder than she originally thought. It’s difficult to prepare for a potential death. “In case I die during the next battle.” Tears were welling up in her eyes as she avoided eye contact with the person, she had grown close to in the inquisition. Just from the way the dwarf rubbed his face, it was transparent he did not want to have this conversation at all.
“What is it you’d like me to do?”
“I would like it if you kept an eye on Cullen. If you can’t, then at least check on him every now and again. He might… I don’t know how he will be if it happens and I don’t want him to go down a path he will regret.”
“If Corypheus does end up… killing you, then I will do as you requested.” When she heard Varric let out a long deep sigh, she knew the topic was stressful on both ends. “Look, Sirena, no one and I mean no one is going to let that dark magister get his hands on you especially the Inquisitor and Cullen. You faked the anchor to save her, nothing will happen to you.”
“Thank you, Varric. Truly.” Sirena stood up and gave the dwarf a hug. “I appreciate everything you have done.” It almost sounded like she was saying her goodbyes. She felt his own arms wrap around her in a tighter hug before letting go. Taking that as her dismissal to leave, she left his little area. It seemed trading one life with another doesn’t relieve her of any stress.
As the young woman walked through the Great Hall towards her chambers, she thought about her growth as a person. When she had first arrived to Thedas, she was still child-like and immature. Over her time with the inquisition, she had grown to be a more mature woman who didn’t constantly make jokes when they were not needed. Taking things more seriously. If her mother saw her now, she’d be proud. It amazed her how quickly she blossomed. Though, everyone cultivates in their own time. And, of course, there was a lot to improve on still.
Once the young woman made it to her chambers, she didn’t sit down at her desk like she normally would. To the outlander, there was no point anymore. Instead, Sirena moved over to the balcony. Her blue-green eyes looked up at the blue sky and at the surroundings. The American heard footsteps in her room, but she didn’t bother to turn around. It was better for her. At least she thought. Soon enough, the person was next to her and from her peripheral vision the person appeared to look like her friend, Chiara. With a sigh, she finally glanced over at her friend.
“You would not believe what I did today. I finally hung out with Cole! He is just so adorable! I should have done it a lot sooner. Though, some of the things he says is very confusing.” Sirena was happy for her friend that she had a good time, but there were other pressing matters on her mind.
“I’m glad you had a good time.” She simply said to the girl who was extremely excited and happy. “I just want to say this… Thank you for being my friend. I greatly appreciate it and cherish the memories we share. I hope you have many days, months, years of happiness.” The twenty-three-year-old looked over at the one beside her again and gave her a little smile so she didn’t think anything was off. Her friend’s eyes blinked at her. The words were not unfamiliar for she used to say something similar every time the outlander had become sentimental.
“You have always been a good friend to me. You deserve a lot of happiness.” Chiara said in return. It didn’t take the most observant person to know everything wasn’t okay, but somehow her friend didn’t catch it. “I’m going to go hang out with Dorian. You know I love his sass.” Sirena didn’t watch her friend leave, instead, she looked at the scenery again. Enjoying the view while she could.
