Kattath and Nalia came in sometime later and woke Nathavin up and led him to one of the bed chambers hidden within the temple. Nalia informed him that it was Caellia’s and he gently laid her on the bed and left her in Nalia’s care, though not before giving Nalia a warning glance. He then followed Kattath to a separate set of chambers that had been prepared for him. As they made their way around he noticed that night had fallen and that many of the elves were asleep. His chambers were located on the opposite side of the temple from Caellia’s and he gave Kattath a grateful nod before disappearing inside.
Caellia awoke the next day with no recollection of how she’d gotten to her chambers. Looking out the nearest window she saw that it was already quite late in the day. The events from yesterday sprung vividly to her mind and she stumbled as she sleepily got out of bed. The door to the room opened and Nalia swept breezily inside.
“You’re already awake. That’s good because Lord Nathavin is waiting for you in the Northern courtyard.” Nalia whisked over to Caellia and pushed her to a changing screen and shoved her behind it as she thrust Caellia’s armor at her. “Get changed and be quick about it.”
“Why?” Caellia asked through a not quite muffled yawn.
“Lord Nathavin is getting impatient. The sun has already passed its middle point in the sky. You’ve slept nearly the entire day.”
Caellia shook her hair out and set about getting ready. Once again she noted the respectful way Nalia referred to Nathavin. This brought about the memory of her stating that she had to ask Nathavin’s permission to speak with her. Caellia remembered that she’d never gotten an answer out of Nalia. “Nalia, why did you believe you had to ask for Nathavin’s permission to speak with me yesterday? And you never did tell me what it was you wanted to speak with me about.” Poking her head around from behind the changing screen Caellia fixed Nalia with a curious look.
“It was only proper that I seek his permission to speak with you.” Nalia answered evasively.
Caellia persisted, “But why? Nalia you’ve never been that respectful to anyone let alone a dark elf.” She frowned pensively, what was going on? “You’ve even begun addressing him by his proper title. I remember a time when you said you would never address any dark elf with an honorific.” Caellia stared down her friend. “Why have you suddenly begun to treat him with so much respect when you’ve never shown an inclination to do so?”
Nalia matched Caellia’s stare, “I believe it is in my best interests to become useful to him. Why do you refer to him so,” Nalia stumbled for a moment searching for a tactful way of speaking, “informally?” She noticed the slight twitch and knew Caellia had caught the insinuation and pressed her point. “Caellia, do you realize how very close the two of you look and sound when you’re around one another?” Nalia shook her head in disbelief at Caellia’s blank stare. “You don’t, do you? Caellia let’s just say that I have a feeling Lord Nathavin will have a significant impact on my life.”
A frown marred Nalia’s features as she remembered his murderous look at her yesterday for her transgressions against Caellia and himself. “Or my death if he so chooses.” Nalia shook herself from those morbid thoughts and said quickly. “If you still don’t understand you must ask him, as I have answered all the questions I am prepared to answer. As for the conversation I wished to have with you, I still want to have it. But you heard what he said. I must speak about that with him present.”
A sudden knock on the door interrupted their conversation and Nathavin’s gruff voice came through. “Caellia we must hurry. I expect you to be out within the next few minutes.” His voice grew slightly foreboding as he added, “Or their will be consequences.” A wicked grin crossed Nathavin’s face as he heard a flurry of activity begin within the room, no doubt caused by Caellia rushing about as she remembered the last time he’d made a similar threat. Satisfied that she would be out quickly he strode smugly outside with a barely suppressed chuckle.
*****
Several days passed and they were now in the subterranean home of the dark elves and Caellia had begun to be even more nervous when around Nathavin. As she watched the dark elves and orcs in the dimly lit caverns she reflected on the past few days. It seemed like ever since that evening spent in the temple alone he’d begun to push her limits. He was constantly putting a strain on her by requiring her to spend even more time with him than he had been previously. At first she’d thought it was just her imagination, but that idea had been shattered when he’d begun to make a habit of always calling her to his side for menial things. Things he could have taken care of on his own or had one of his underlings handle.
Then there was the matter of him always finding an excuse for them to be alone. He nearly always had a reason for the two of them to have a private discussion. She would have thought that with so much that needed to be readied for the trip back to Goddard that he wouldn’t have time for her. That wasn’t the case however and despite her best attempts she could never manage to elude him.
Heaving a deep sigh Caellia wondered where Kattath was. She hadn’t seen the spell howler since the day before when she’d been ordering the human named Hontas about. That was another strange thing. Nathavin had, had some dealings with the humans and they were now following his orders. She knew a few dispatches had been sent to the King of Giran and the Queen of Dion but Caellia knew nothing else. She assumed that a treaty of sorts had been arranged. Hontas had said precious little to her when she’d inquired as to what him and Kattath had discussed. In fact, the nervous human had only issued a low unintelligible mutter and had hurried away from her.
Now that she thought about it, most people she came into contact with had recently begun to quickly leave her presence without saying much to her, if anything at all. Not even the dark elven masters were saying anything to her. They tended to stay away from her as much as possible. Her brows furrowed in consternation, what was going on? She was glad though that she no longer received death glares from most of the dark elves. Her thoughts scattered as Nathavin smoothly slipped his arms around her from behind and drew her back to his chest.
“How are you?” He asked her contentedly. He smirked lightly as he felt her tense up and attempt to pull away. “Settle down.” Nathavin was enjoying this. He knew she was confused and that she cared for him more than she admitted even to herself. “I said ‘How are you?’” He reminded her, playfully blowing a cool stream of air onto her neck.
Caellia froze as his breath tickled the hair at the nape of her neck and she could hardly breathe. “I’m…f…fine.” She stammered shakily as she attempted to lean forward and out of his grasp by pretending to be interested by something in the distance.
“That’s good.” He still didn’t release her. Instead he closed his arms even tighter around her in admonition of her attempt to get way, eliciting a short gasp to burst from her lungs and she stopped struggling almost immediately. When he felt her sag lightly against him in submission he readily eased up on his powerful hold, though he still didn’t release her.
Caellia fumbled about for something to say and finally settled on asking him. “When will we be leaving for Goddard?” While she had hoped to be able to stay with most of her brethren in her home village she had understood that she would be expected to travel back to Goddard with him.
“Soon,” he replied softly as he pulled her even closer, ignoring her soft gasp of protest at being pulled so close to him. She would have to learn to cast off her shyness and embarrassment. He loved the way she felt in his arms and had no intentions of letting that shyness keep him from holding her. Closing his eyes, Nathavin nuzzled his nose in her hair next to her right ear affectionately and breathed in deeply.
Caellia stiffened subtly as his warm breath lifted and parted her hair next to her ear. “Nathavin…” She began uncertainly but fell silent when his arms twitched around her middle. Recognizing the warning for what it was, she allowed him to continue. Her eyes closed and she hesitantly leaned fully back into his chest as her head drifted over to the left, surrendering completely to his wishes.
Nathavin suppressed a low moan of satisfaction as he felt her yield to him. When she turned her head to the side, exposing her graceful neck, all conscious thought left him. The gentle nuzzling gave way to slow kisses along the side of her neck. His left hand trailed up her side and became tangled in her hair as he coaxed her head further to the left to gain more access to her neck. He stopped briefly at the sensitive area just below her jaw and suckled lightly.
Caellia shivered as Nathavin began to kiss her neck. The kisses were light at first and then became more intense. She felt his hand move from her waist to her hair and begin to insistently tug her head to the left. When she felt his mouth just below her jaw she was rocked by the powerful sensation and she was startled when she realized that the impassioned groan she’d heard was her own.
Nathavin heard her low moan and knew if he didn’t stop now there would be no turning back. Reluctantly he stopped kissing her and drew back, taking a moment to examine the small reddish mark under her jaw with smug satisfaction. Soon she would bear more than just a mere love mark! Resting his chin atop her head, he listened to her labored breathing as she worked to calm down. He was filled with a sense of conceited male pride to know that he was the first to have caused her to react that way.
Caellia leaned heavily against him as she struggled to squelch the new sensations. What had happened?! Never in her years had she felt like this! She closed her eyes and took several long shuddering breaths and worked to bring her racing heart back under control.
After many long minutes, he was the first to break the silence, searching desperately to find any subject to distract him from his wayward thoughts. “We will be following a different path than the main group once we reach Rune. You are not yet fully trained and you must be before we face Asadar.” He let her go and spun her around to face him. “We will take a small unit and will travel to several hunting grounds along the way back to the castle.”
His voice became grim as his hands came up to either side of her face. “This will be very dangerous Caellia. I will be taking you to the very same hunting grounds I went to for my advanced training. The savages there are like none you’ve ever seen. They are extremely dangerous and highly intelligent. One mistake could cost everyone in the unit their lives.”
Caellia nodded gravely. “I understand.” Caellia was shocked to discover that she was actually afraid of training with him. It wasn’t the fact that she was afraid of the training itself, but rather she was afraid of possibly letting him down. She knew she would never be as strong as he was. It simply wasn’t possible. She looked away from him, discouraged and inexplicably saddened as she began to think that she might disappoint him. That she might not live up to his expectations of her. Caellia didn’t know why, but suddenly she found that she didn’t want to let him down. It was very important to her that she never let him down.
Nathavin sensed her sudden shift in mood. “Caellia, what’s wrong?” He asked concernedly, unable to understand her sudden troubled look. When she avoided his gaze by turning her head downward and to the side he was further distressed. He took her chin in his hand and forced her to face him. “What is it?” Had he said something wrong? “Caellia, please, what is it?”
“I, I just don’t want to disappoint you.” Before he could say anything she rushed on. “I’ll never be as strong or as skilled as you are. I just…” Her teeth rattled as he gave her a light shake.
“You will be fine Caellia. I won’t ask you to do something that isn’t within your abilities. You are already an accomplished archer. You know this. What we will be doing is more finely honing your skills.” He began to caress her cheek gently. “The only way for you to improve your skills now is to face far greater challenges. Having seen you fight, I can say from experience that you are at a point which the only challenges left to you are the challenges that cannot be faced alone. Whatever happens, Caellia, you will never disappoint me.” Actually he found her concern over whether she would disappoint him or not quite charming. It showed that she cared what he thought of her. Nathavin’s voice became firmer and more assertive, “Never think that you will disappoint me.” He waited for her to nod her head in acceptance before replying in a more casual, though still a bit domineering tone. “Then consider the matter settled.”
Caellia stood quietly for a moment before stepping back from him and asking a question that had begun to dwell heavily on her mind. “And when we finally return to the castle, what then?” Her eyes grew wide and her heart rate sped up at his unexpected answer.
Reaching out and brushing her hair back from her face, his eyes clouded over in thought, Nathavin answered her huskily. “We will have our wedding.”
