Chapter 4 – Preamble

The Story Thus Far

It is the 768th year of the Scarlet Empire. No-one has seen the Scarlet Empress for five years. Her eldest daughter, Mnemon, prepares to take the throne but finds claim thwarted by demonic Anathema who have stolen the Threshold Kingdom of Jiara from her. As Mnemon makes war to retake Jiara, she has dispatched her granddaughter, Mnemon Alinos, to fortify the neighboring kingdom of Dovak.

The Alinos family arrived in Dovak to find it beset on all sides. After many hard battles, our heroes Cynis Ganan, Mnemon Alinos Danireya and Gracious Pealing Melody have finally seen off the threats to Dovak, and conquered the hidden first age city of Urza Arcus.

Only an Unclean Deathknight – a powerful necromancer with the destruction of all life as his goal – remains to challenge Realm supremacy in Dovak. Believed to be the grandson of the king, and rightful heir to the throne, The Gift of Merciful Silence nearly destroyed Dovak once and now lurks in the shadows.

Stranger enemies exist also, monsters from Creation’s prehistory dwell beneath Dovak, and our heroes have uncovered a new breed of infernal Anathema – Deathknights in service to the Demon Princes of Hell.

Most troublingly, Mnemon’s own daughter, Mnemon Nanals, is not only worshiped as the god of vengeance by the natives of Dovak, but she has also unleashed an unbound Demon of the Second Circle upon Creation – Sondok, She Who Stands In Doorways. Nanals is now missing, and the whereabouts of Sondok is also… unknown.

A month has passed since the conquering of Urza Arcus. Our heroes have been deep in training. Dovak has been (mostly) rebuilt, The Gift has not been seen (nor has Mnemon Nanals). As Dovak is rebuilt, Urza Arcus is colonized – the bearfolk marginalized, pushed into slums and forced to work long hours in copper mines to fill the coffers of the Realm. Danireya’s liaison with Dovak’s Princess and Heir Apparent has come to a sudden, shocking, end.

Mnemon Alinos Danireya – A hero
Reya is the eldest daughter of Mnemon Alinos and her heir apparent, also being groomed by Mnemon Bekara to take the position of Satrap. Reya’s position in Dovak has been hurt significantly: since masterminding the rape of the heir to the throne she has lost favor with both the city’s royals and its gods.

None-the-less, she has established herself as a formidable power, explicitly recognized as a rival to her mother and aunt. Reya is 9 weeks pregnant with her third child.

Cynis Jinabar – A magistrate
Youngest child of Cynis Lenoni and Ledaal Vidad, and one of the last magistrates to be appointed by the Empress before her disappearance. Jin traveled to Nexus investigating a stream of seditious books that were flooding the Blessed Isle, and was in the Threshold when the Regent was appointed. Her investigation led her to a specific merchant with ties to southern caravans. The timely intervention of her archons not only put a stop to the trader, but also managed to retrieve many of the seditious texts for a proper Immaculate burning. Notably, one shipment slipped through the net – an extortionately priced, single book addressed to Ragara Haseti in Dovak.

Mnemon Nanals – The Edge of the Wolf’s Blade
Worshiped as a god by the natives of Dovak. Nanals disappeared, presumably to hell, after unleashing Sondok unbound on Creation. Nanals confessed to Danireya about masterminding the attack on Dovak (to kill Ragara Haseti), and to having a bastard with Ragara Bhagwei (Mnemon Alinos).

A classmate of Danireya at the Heptagram. Goes by Udi.

Likely to be Oka Dovak, true heir to the throne of Dovak. The Gift has tried and failed to burn Dovak to the ground. Beaten at every turn by our heroes, he has lost his Belt of Shadow Walking to Cynis Ganan.
