Kattath looked at the large vessel tiredly. It had taken quite some time to load the ship without a proper dock, but Lord Nathavin had insisted that they maintain utmost secrecy and had therefore refused to go to Gludin Harbor with its proper docks, much to the disgruntlement of the ships captain and crew. Nathavin had claimed that going to the docks would raise too much suspicion and had adamantly refused to have the ship loaded there. Kattath could appreciate his reasoning, as it made a certain sort of sense, but was it a truly necessary precaution? Sighing heavily she decided not to dwell on it. The ship was now loaded with everything and everyone that was going back to Goddard Castle and it was time to leave. She frowned in slight irritation, so where was Lord Nathavin and Queen Caellia? She muttered curt orders to the sentry standing closest to her to inform the ships captain that she was going to go look for Nathavin and Caellia. She didn’t wait for his acceptance of the order before she set off in her search.
After a brief investigation Kattath finally set out toward the cliff that overlooked the sea. Her sharp eyes spotted the two and she came to an abrupt halt. The scene was simply amazing. Caellia was sitting with Nathavin’s head in her lap, her hand lazily trailing through his hair as she gazed upon his face with a peaceful expression. The moons soft pale glow lent the two an almost ethereal beauty as they seemed to glow faintly in its soft light. Caellia’s hair seemed to shimmer in the moonlight. The view of the night time sea, with the stars and the full moon in the distance provided the perfect backdrop to the entire scene. It was, in a word, breathtaking. Kattath hated to disturb them and soundly cursed Asadar and his entire family line. It was entirely his and his family’s fault that she had to disturb them.
Approaching quietly, Kattath opened her gift of second sight that allowed her to see the colored auras that surrounded people. It was obvious from the light bluish aura around Nathavin that he was asleep. Caellia’s aura flickered between white and muted red and yellow, the colors of her aura indicated that she was protecting and watching over him. As Kattath came nearer she wondered if Caellia even knew she was there. The light elf had not made any motion that would signal that she was aware of Kattath’s presence. All her concentration appeared to be on Nathavin. Before Kattath could speak, Caellia’s soft voice reached her ears, proving that she had indeed known of Kattath’s approach.
“I take it the ship is ready to depart?” Caellia spoke gently so that she would not awaken Nathavin.
“Yes it is.” Kattath answered equally softly, her eyes watching Caellia’s fingers still brushing through Nathavin’s hair. There could be no doubt about it. The light elf truly loved him. Kattath knew it now just as surely as she knew her dark spells. Why couldn’t Caellia see for herself that she loved Nathavin? “Caellia,” Kattath paused briefly, trying to find the right words, “can you not see…” She trailed off when Caellia began to speak.
“Kattath, I know what you are going to ask me. I knew this conversation would arise again, though I had sincerely hoped it wouldn’t.” Caellia finally looked up from Nathavin and looked at Kattath. “I am not ready to answer your question.” She elaborated further. “I am not ready to answer your question because I am not ready to answer my own questions.” Caellia’s voice trembled, whether in fear or something else, she would never know. “I know what I say won’t make sense, but I’m scared. I’m scared of what this will mean for me.” She looked back toward Nathavin as she continued, half whispering. “He’s so different from what I’d expected.” She looked back up at Kattath. “You already know the answer to your question, you know you do and I know you do. But knowing the answer is one thing. Speaking it aloud is another.”
Kattath nodded her head slowly. “Stating it aloud will make it all too real, won’t it? By stating it aloud, you can no longer avoid it. You’ve never felt feelings this strong have you?” At Caellia’s answering nod, it all began to make sense. Kattath cast a quick glance at Nathavin to ascertain he was still asleep, satisfied that he was she asked Caellia very gently. “Caellia, did anyone in your village ever explain the concept of ‘love’ to you?” As she listened to Caellia’s answer she realized that the light elves, or more accurately Asterios, had only given her an abstract and vague idea of the concept, and even then he had gone so far as to say that anything other than a platonic love was forbidden. And Kattath suspected that Asterios told Caellia that to more firmly keep the young Queen in line as it was quite clear that the majority of light elves did not view true love as forbidden. Perhaps a closely guarded secret, but it was not forbidden, for if it were forbidden the entire race would have died out.
Kattath now knew that Caellia did not recognize the feelings she was having and was therefore afraid of them because no one had explained them to her. Caellia had never felt these emotions. While she had loved Goryn, it had been a platonic love, like one would have for a treasured friend but nothing more. What she felt for Nathavin was true love. Caellia knew she loved Nathavin but was deathly afraid of the fact, apparently believing that what she felt was wrong. Kattath instantly felt remorse for the elf. Asterios had done more harm to Caellia than she could have imagined. Kattath had believed that Caellia had resisted the idea of being in love with Nathavin simply because he was a dark elf and she was a light elf. But now she could see that it was much more than that.
For all her years, Caellia was still truly innocent. She had no knowledge of what it truly meant to love and be loved in return in the way that was natural between a male and female. Asterios had robbed her of that knowledge and was still robbing her of that knowledge from his grave. She nodded slowly as Caellia finished her tale.
After a few moments of silence she said quietly. “I understand now why you cannot admit your feelings for the time being. But, I warn you, you cannot ignore them for much longer. Nathavin is being very patient with you, but his patience will not last forever. I strongly advise you to speak to one of your own people about matters of the heart.” Her voice became edgy as she warned Caellia, “However, remember that dark elves and light elves do things very differently. Nathavin will not behave the same way a light elf or even a human would for that matter, where love is concerned. Nathavin already considers you as his and he will act accordingly.”
“I know he already considers me as his, the wedding proves that.” Caellia said testily frowning a little. “I guess it would be too much to hope that this is merely a passing…infatuation, on both our parts.”
“It is no mere infatuation for either of you.” Kattath deadpanned with clear surety. “And he will never let you go. You must learn to cope with your feelings for him and his for you. It will be easier if you confront your fears and learn to cope with these feelings before the wedding.”
Caellia looked down at Nathavin and whispered sadly, “But I’m afraid. I’m afraid of these feelings I have for him, I’m afraid of the feelings he has for me.”
Kattath looked down at her and said with quiet conviction. “Then let him teach you not to be afraid of those feelings. Trust him, and more importantly, trust yourself. You know that what you feel isn’t wrong. Show him that you love him. You don’t have to tell him just yet with words, although you will need to so in the future, and soon.” She knelt down next to Caellia. “He truly does love you Caellia. I know it, I can see it. Please let him love you and love him in return. He needs it so much more than you can know. His life has been hard, like yours. But where you knew that you were to be the Queen of your people and everyone automatically treated with the respect you deserved, Nathavin had to fight for every bit of respect he’s ever gotten. He had no one to help guide him.” Kattath looked deeply into Caellia’s eyes as she implored the light elf to listen to her. “He needs you Caellia.”
Caellia stared into Kattath’s eyes for many long seconds as her words sunk in. “I…I don’t know what to say Kattath.” And Caellia really didn’t know what to say. She had never thought about the fact that he might need her. But as she looked down upon him it made more sense. How often in the past had he come to her when he was obviously troubled? How many times in the past had he come to her and was content to simply sit in silence with her? As she looked down at him again, the inexplicable fear reasserted itself and it must’ve shown on her face because Kattath immediately began to speak again.
“Do not fear him and do not fear your reactions to him. Your reactions are normal and are nothing to be afraid of.” Kattath noticed Nathavin was beginning to stir and whispered softly and firmly. “Do not be afraid of him anymore Caellia. You must also learn not to be afraid of yourself. He can help you; you just have to be willing to let him help you. Being afraid of him is a waste of time; he will never let you go. This is the only thing I will tell you regarding the difference in dark elven and light elven males. Once a dark elf male claims a female his bride, nothing short of death will persuade him to change his mind.”
Caellia also noticed that Nathavin was beginning to wake up but could not contain herself. “Why can’t you help me Kattath!?”
Kattath merely shook her head and stated simply. “I have helped you all I can. It is not my place to help you anymore, even if I wanted to.” She nodded her head toward Nathavin. “Only he can help you now.” After a slight pause she continued. “I will leave now so that you may share a few more moments in private. You won’t get much time alone on the ship once we leave for Rune.” With that, Kattath stood up and quickly walked back into the shadows of the night where she soon disappeared, almost as if she’d never been there, leaving Caellia to think back on their conversation as Nathavin slowly woke up.
Nathavin stretched and lazily looked up at Caellia. The moonlight shone in her hair and her pale skin reflected the pale light softly so that she seemed to glow. Slowly reaching a hand out, he brushed the back of his knuckles against her cheek while murmuring quietly in a voice husky with sleep. “You’re beautiful in the moonlight.” He continued to lightly stroke her cheek even though he noticed that she had blushed profusely at his comment. He no longer felt as exhausted as he had. Nathavin knew he had slept for far longer than he’d anticipated but he did not mind. He had been able to spend time alone with her and that was all that mattered to him. After a few more minutes he finally decided that it was time for them to make their way back to the ship. “I’m sure Kattath has the ship loaded by now and as much as I hate for this to end, we should be getting back.”
Caellia blinked dazedly at him, she had gotten lost in the moment and forgotten all about the ship. Nodding at him, she allowed him to sit up. She watched him stand up then put her hand in his when he offered to help her stand up. As they began to make their way back to the ship she wondered if she dared to take Kattath’s advice and let him teach her to not be afraid of her feelings. Her thoughts continued to stray to the conversation she’d shared with Kattath.
Nathavin was aware that Caellia was preoccupied with her own thoughts and simply let her be. He knew he was the reason for her preoccupation and was patient enough to let her try to work things through on her own. Try as he might though, he could not help but wonder what was going through Caellia’s mind when he caught her looking at him from beneath her lashes when she thought he wasn’t paying attention. As they boarded the ship and made way for the captain and crew to set sail she surprised him by shyly slipping her small hand into his as the wind caught the ships sails.

Asadar glared at Hontas while absently stroking the large black panthers head. “Are you quite sure that Lord Nathavin intends to attack Aden?”
“Yes. He drew up these very plans himself.” Hontas handed the scrolls over to Asadar. “These are detailed plans of how he intends on attacking the castle.” He cringed at Asadar’s bark of cruel laughter. “As you can see, he believes that these two areas,” he pointed to individual sections of the castle walls, “are vulnerable to attack.”
Asadar threw his head back and laughed. “Those walls are heavily fortified! Not even the dwarven golems can take those walls down!” The massive black cat growled its displeasure at its owner’s loud laugh and stalked away to the far corner of the room where it laid down, the ears and tail flicking back and forth in irritation. Asadar watched the cat with an amused expression for a moment. “Tell me Hontas, just how were you able to gain Lord Nathavin’s trust so easily?” He waited a beat before saying nonchalantly. “I expected him to kill you if you ever met up with him.”
Hontas stiffened in anger at Asadar’s words. “It was Queen Caellia who convinced him to believe me.”
Asadar’s’ smile was cold. “She is so trusting. So…naïve.” He laughed again. “She will make a good wife.”
Hontas shuddered before saying boldly. “You do realize that she will not submit to you easily?” Casting caution to the wind he stared in Asadar’s’ eyes. “She is much like my sister was. She will fight you.”
Asadar’s head cocked to the side, his red hair falling over his eye before he swept it back and said. “So, let her fight me.” His grin widened. “The more she fights, the more interesting she will be! And the sweeter my victory shall be when I crush her race before her very eyes!”
Hontas sighed inwardly, knowing that he’d made the right decision when he’d sworn his allegiance to Nathavin. The sudden noise of a sword clearing its scabbard drew his attention back to Asadar.
“Hontas, how long has it been since we’ve had a sparring match?” Asadar asked in a lazy drawl.
Hontas’ eyes hardened with hate. “Not long enough!”
Asadar held the massive sword across his chest in a guard position and glared at Hontas from over its blade. “I think we should have another match.”
Hontas watched Asadar closely. The idea of another sparing match wasn’t a mere suggestion; it was a thinly veiled order. Likely Asadar didn’t trust him and wanted to drive the point home. Hontas however had decided he wouldn’t play Asadar’s twisted game. “I’ve retired from my old profession. You know that, and you also know I will never take up that profession again.”
Asadar glared at him. “Not even at the cost of your own life?!”
“Never.”
The tense silence in the room was almost palpable as the two glared at one another. It was Hontas who broke the silence. “Lord Nathavin intends to utterly destroy this castle. His forces are equal to your own. I suggest you prepare for him.” His eyes flashed angrily. “This will be either your greatest victory….or….your greatest defeat.” With those final words, Hontas strode out of the room.
Asadar stood in absolute silence before letting out an enraged roar and destroyed the contents of the room in his demented fury.
