Here they were, back in Orlais for official and possibly last inquisition business. The exalted council had been called by Divine Victoria who was once known as Cassandra. Sirena didn’t really need to be there, but went for the commander’s sake. Her friend Chiara had already gone back home and pleaded with her to go back with her to their time and lives, which she had declined. The now twenty-five-year-old woman made a home with Cullen and she felt her place was next to him. Which brought her to the Winter Palace. It obviously wasn’t the first time she was there. But it was the first time she got to look at it in daylight and got to roam around. The place was very extravagant.
Sirena found herself walking around and looking at everyone who the inquisition had helped. Of course, she couldn’t wear anything plain. She wore an ivory silk underdress that had subtle floral prints and a hot pink over robe also made of silk with a sash around her waist. Every now and again, the American woman glared at the people who now either want to control or turned their backs on the inquisition. They all seem ungrateful to her. Everyone was looking out for their own benefit which was selfish and quite corrupt in her eyes. Fereldon was the bigger offender due to the King’s uncle, Teagan. When her blue-green eyes met with his briefly, she gave him a harsh glare before looking away. As she continued to walk at a leisure pace, the outlander had spotted Varric, someone whom she hadn’t seen for two years. With a smile, she approached the dwarf.
“Varric! How wonderful it is to see you again! Are you staying out of trouble?” The outlander asked catching up to an old friend of hers.
“Well after becoming Viscount of Kirkwall, I have been nothing but busy trying to rebuild the city. How have you been? Has Curly tied the knot with you yet?” It surprised her to hear that he had become a leader himself. Though, she did know that Kirkwall was his home and it was in dire need of repair.
“I’ve been very well. It’s nice living the tedious life after all the fighting.” After a couple of years of being with the same man, she thought he would have proposed by now. Her head shook sadly. “No, um, we haven’t gotten married nor has he proposed.” Sirena noticed Varric shaking his head in disappointment.
“I thought he would have by now. I’m sorry, Blondie; I’m sure it will happen eventually.” It was then a man in grey had come running to speak with the viscount. “I’d love to talk more, Sirena, but I have business to attend.” With a nod, she gave a small wave and walked off. It was good to catch up with her dwarf friend but it wasn’t enough time. A soft sigh had escaped her lips. Of course, letters were exchanged, but even then, she sometimes needed more. People had lives and he clearly had a lot on his plate and she knew that responsibility always came first.
As she walked around, the American woman glanced over at the detailing of the palace. Just like at Skyhold, there was gossip all around. It annoyed her then and it annoys her now and yet it also intrigues her. Though, sometimes, she knew gossip could be harmful. It can ruin someone’s reputation and livelihood. Words may be just words, but they had power especially when people gave them. While ignoring those who gawked and talked, she made her way towards a covered open building that seemed to look like a spa. She then felt a pair of eyes on her. As she approached the building, Sirena saw Vivienne whom everyone didn’t like, but she did. In a way, the woman looked out for her during their time in the inquisition.
“Hello, my dear, you must have had a long ride. Have you gone to the spa yet?” The outlander shook her head before peering behind the woman. “Well, you must join me then. I have already set up a reservation.” The grand enchanter then pulled Sirena toward her and led her over into the building. There were people moving about. Vivienne walked her over towards a screen. Understanding the hint, the American woman stepped behind the screen and saw a towel. She had a blank look on her face.
“Viv, what am I supposed to do? There’s only a towel.”
“My dear, you are supposed to only wear the towel.” Hearing that answer made her turn red as she slowly took off each article of clothing before wrapping a towel around her body. “It can take years to get an appointment here. Enjoy getting pampered!” The outlander grew puzzled. Did Vivienne know something that she didn’t? With a sigh, she stepped out from the screen feeling quite self-conscious. Holding the towel up with her hands, her eyes looked around to where she wanted to go, when she caught sight of her reflection in a mirror. Her hair had grown out a lot and she saw her natural dark brown color which made her nose wrinkle. Immediately, the American moved over to the hair station and sat down. A hair stylist had come over to where she sat.
“How would you like your hair done today?” The elf girl asked as she looked over her wavy hair.
“My hair needs to be colored back to blonde. I also need a trim to cut off the split ends.” The stylist got to work immediately as another had come up to do her nails. At that rate, she felt like she should have gone to a salon instead, but her locks were in dire need to get done.
It had taken two hours for her hair to get done and become the color she wanted it to be. And that included the washing. Her nails had also got polished and painted. Was this the mage’s plan? To get pampered? They hardly spoken so it made little sense. Her hair was put into a cap to protect it from water and her fingernails had already completely dried. The outlander made her way to the little pool of water that was hot from the springs. She noticed Vivienne was already relaxing in the water which made her decide to sit next to the older woman. The water felt nice and warm as it surrounded Sirena like a warm blanket.
“It’s relaxing, is it not, darling?” The mage asked wondering what the younger woman’s opinion was. It was clear that she wanted a girl’s day. And it was something that the American needed since there was nothing like this in Skyhold.
“It’s very relaxing. I haven’t been able to just relax since I left home.” She admitted. Back when she was home in the states, she used to have weekly hot relaxing bath. “Was this planned?” Sirena heard Vivienne let out a hearty laugh.
“Of course, this was planned! Why would it not be? You have worked hard, my dear. It is my treat which you deserve. I even made a time for Evelyn.” Vivienne leaned closer to the outlander like she had a piece of gossip to share. “This meeting, is to shut the inquisition down. Teagan, from Fereldon, is insisting it; saying it concerns King Alistair.” Sirena let out a soft sigh knowing the king’s uncle was a huge obstacle. What a lot of people didn’t know was that Skyhold became a place to call home for others.
“I really have no respect for any of these people. All it is to them is a power grab and a way to have control. Teagan never liked the inquisition. But he also didn’t do anything about the mage problem while we were still in Haven. He is just an old man who is losing power.” Sirena responded back making it clear she didn’t like who he had become. It was very clear the man had lost his popularity.
“I do hope the inquisition gives a good reason for it to stay.” The way the grand enchanter looked at her seemed like she knew something.
It had been a few hours; the outlander had stayed at the spa. Now she was walking around aimlessly with her silk robes back on. Her eyes glanced up at the sky surprised it was still sunny despite staying in the spa for a long time. Still, she felt eyes upon her as the women had her stroll. Her head turned slightly to peer back only to see a silhouette of a person following her. She got the feeling of unease and her steps became faster wanting to get away from the person. Her heartbeat had begun to beat fast in her chest. Was it possible that she may be over reacting? Maybe. Though, there could be spies or assassins anywhere and she wasn’t a fool to become complacent. Every now and again, she looked back behind her which was something she shouldn’t do.
Once Sirena was in a more crowded area in the Winter Palace, the uneasiness had dissipated. A sigh of relief had escaped from her lips and she was able to continue her leisure walk. From nearby, the American woman heard some barking which had caught her attention and curiosity. Keeping her mind off from what had happened earlier, she made her way over towards the barking sound. As she got closer, Sirena noticed a big dog rolling around happily. The outlander then spotted Cullen rubbing the dog’s belly with a big smile on his face.
“When did you get the dog?”
“They don’t breed mabari in Orlais. The merchant said he was abandoned. Perhaps his owners got tired of the novelty?” The woman from America glanced over at the dog and noticed how obedient he was as well as the intelligence he showed in the eyes.
“But he is such a good dog! With that positive attitude and fetching ability!”
“He’s not supposed to fetch it…” With a smile, she watched as he shook his head as his brows furrowed. Her lips curled up in amusement as she looked at the frustration upon his face. She tried to prevent herself from laughing. Did he not know dogs fetched instead of dodged unless they were abused.
“I don’t think you understand how this works.”
“Another Fereldon trapped at the Winter Palace! I couldn’t leave him to that fate. Besides, I think he likes me.” Seeing the Commander’s small smile melted her heart.
“You should take him in Fereldon sometime. He should know where he came from.” The outlander excluded herself on purpose. If he hadn’t asked the important question yet, he may never will. What was the point of continuously waiting for something that may never happen?
“I did promise my sister a visit…” His attention then turned towards the dog. “She might try to spoil you. Remember who you report to. The inquisition will change after this. I’m not very sure what that will mean.” Her eyes caught sight of him glimpsing down in what either may be an afterthought or concentration. “Still, I’ve found certainty in my life now, the council won’t change that.” The American watched as he stood up and peered into her eyes before looking away. Her brows scrunched together wondering what was going through his mind. “Marry me.” It was such a simple statement that she thought her ears didn’t hear correctly.
“What?” Her heart was pounding in her chest as she looked at Cullen with surprise. The man had finally proposed to her! This was amazing! Something she had been waiting for had finally come to fruition. Just from the way he raised his hand to the back of his neck, she knew his awkwardness was coming back. Either that, he was losing his confidence afraid she may reject his proposal.
“I mean, will you… I had a plan… And it didn’t involve a dog. But you were… It doesn’t matter.” While Cullen blundered through his words, she still couldn’t believe that he finally did it. She really couldn’t wrap her head around it. “I’ve thought of little else, and I don’t need a plan. Only to know if you would…” There was no hesitation from her.
“Of course, I’ll marry you, Cullen! I have actually been waiting for this moment for a while now!” Sirena said excitedly while grinning. It was probably one of the happiest moments in her life.
“You will.” As she looked at the blonde man, there was no way the American woman could stop smiling. It even appeared as if she was glowing.
“People are going to notice the second hand of the inquisitor, marrying the commander in the middle of the Exalted Council.” It wasn’t like she cared what others thought. In fact, she was proud if others knew. There was nothing to hide.
“It won’t go over well. But we know a few people who can keep things… secret.” She had been filled with disappointment after she heard him speak. He wanted to keep things quiet, so quiet to the point their marriage would be kept a secret. It was clear he wanted to elope then and there.
“I don’t care if others approve or not. What matters is you and I. We can gather our friends for the small ceremony.” As she gazed up at him, the outlander noticed a twinkle in his eyes while nodding his head. It was a good compromise.
Sirena was finally walking down the isle wearing an off the shoulder embroidered wedding dress with a long train. Her eyes looked at both sides and saw those that she and Cullen were close to during the crucial time for the inquisition. When she spotted Varric and Dorian, the outlander gave them a small nod. What surprised her was seeing Cassandra. How did she manage to escape from her responsibilities as divine? No matter what, the American was still grateful. Her blue-green eyes finally looked at the end where she saw Cullen standing tall, confident, and proud in his formal red inquisition uniform. Even though she has seen the outfit before, he still managed to take her breath away. With a shy smile, she approached him and stood in front of the Commander. Evelyn straightened the train out for Sirena. She felt his hand grab hers as she glanced up into his eyes.
“Just now… Everything feels like it was worth fighting for.” Cullen whispered as the sister spoke loudly over them.
“It was.” The outlander whispered back so only so only he heard her. It was amazing that she was still able to hear the woman speak as they had their own conversation which she was clearly more focused on.
“This is…” The sister interrupted the Commander which caused a few snickering to be heard in the audience.
“This is the part where you make a promise.”
“Oh. Right.” Sirena heard Cullen clear his throat while blushing softly. The smile still remained on his face as he gazed into her eyes. “I swear unto the Maker and the holy Andraste to love this woman for the rest of my days.” Seeing the tenderness in his eyes made her melt. When the woman looked at her, the American took it as her que to say her vows for the marriage to him. Trying to forget the watching eyes, she took a deep breath before making her own vows.
“I promise to love this man through sickness and in health, to have and to hold, for richer or for poorer, till death do us part.” Sirena recited from what all she could remember from her time. The American gave him a discreet wink which she was sure he understood as a hint to where she had come from.
“You may exchange rings.” He slipped a silver diamond ring that had a floral design on it. The outlander was impressed. While she was out getting last minute things for the wedding, the blonde woman was lucky enough to pick up a wedding band for the one she was marrying. Evelyn passed the ring to the American since she didn’t have any pockets.
With a grateful smile, Sirena finally slipped the band onto Cullen’s left ring finger. The simple action had tied him to her and vice versa. “I now pronounce you as man and wife. You may kiss the bride.” The Commander pulled his bride closer to him with such gentleness that it seemed like she had moved on her own accord. Soon enough, his lips were against her and his kiss was very passionate. There was clapping that had erupted as she kissed him back deeply. She had a finally gotten married to the man she loved. Finally, had become his wife. Sirena would no longer be a Laurette, but a Rutherford instead. Her hopes were finally met and she can focus on the future with her husband.
