Chapter
Five
“Are
you serious?” Raziel asked, Janos nodded looking smug, the expression did not
suit the ancient but Raziel had learnt that Janos was not quiet as ‘innocent’
as he had come to believe. But he didn’t blame the ancient for his slightly
spiteful side, instead he rather liked it, it was strange at first but once
he’d become slightly more used to it Raziel decided that it gave the ancient a
depth that he had lacked previously.
“Yes,”
Janos sighed, “The Being that was absorbed will emerge as if from the past,”
“Have
you memorised that damn prophecy!” Raziel asked incredulous, Janos snarled
quietly before composing himself, he was slowly becoming used to the
fledgling’s never ending stream of questions about everything.
“Raziel
please be reasonable,” he breathed “this is happening before your very eyes,
how can you deny it like this.” Raziel opened his mouth to argue with the blue
skinned ancient but before he spoke he paused and seemed to think then he sighed
“Is
this what it’s going to be like then,” he asked “we wont know what the prophecy
is about until it happens?”
Raziel
couldn’t keep the depression out of his voice, if he’d have understood what was
going on last time then a lot of the trouble would have been saved, he wouldn’t
have hated his father for so long and wouldn’t have felt the never ending
torrent of guilt he’d been suffering for the past fifty years. But then again,
if things had happened differently, if Kain had not thrown him into the abyss,
if he had only told him of what was occurring then would he have travelled
through time to pursue his father? Would he have hunted Janos out? Would he
have given the reaver the power he had? The answer he knew was no, none of what
had to happen would have happened; he had needed his anger and his confusion to
drive him to discover what he had.
“Why
does it always happen to us and why now, the last ‘prophecy’ took thousands of
years, over two millennia to be fulfilled?” Raziel asked
“This
is happening very fast,” Janos admitted “I . . . I don’t know what to tell you
Raziel,” Raziel shook his head and slumped against the wall allowing himself to
sink to the floor. Currently he, Melchiah and Janos stood outside the door to
the room Vorador had given to Kain, they were waiting. It had been like this
for the last three days, three days of waiting.
Having
returned to the mansion Vorador had disappeared off with Kain almost literally
over his shoulder, the emerald skinned vampire’s ‘parental’ instincts on
overdrive; next time they saw Kain he had been extensively scrubbed almost raw
in places and re-clothed, and Vorador was trying to talk him into sleeping, he
hadn’t needed much persuasion. The scion had then slept for two days only
waking up to eat every few hours. This had worried Raziel somewhat but Vorador
had explained that Kain had a lot of power to restore more than the normal
vampire and sleep was the best way to do it so Raziel had backed off a little.
But had remained at his bedside until Vorador had chased him away; he had tried
to re-enter this morning after getting the sleep Vorador demanded of him but the
door was locked and bolted. He had then proceeded to sit outside and wait, he’d
been silent until Janos and Melchiah had walked past.
“It’s
quiet.” Melchiah commented after an awkward silence
“Vorador’s
in there,” Raziel sighed before muttering “hypocrite,” this earned a
distasteful look from Janos, the ancient was getting rather fed up with the
reaver spirit’s attitude and was at some points beginning to pity Kain who had
had to deal with Raziel’s ‘tantrums’ for a millennia; apparently according to
Raziel Kain hadn’t minded, Janos did not believe him.
“Vorador
can be . . . overprotective at times,” Janos admitted “but he means well and
there have been times when his protective nature has saved a great many lives.”
“I’m
not going to kill my father,” Raziel grumbled, Janos groaned quietly to himself
and Raziel lifted an eyebrow, it was rare that Janos lost him temper.
“I
am well aware of that the point I was trying to make was . . .,” the ancient
was interrupted by the loud click of the door behind them unlocking. Raziel was
on his feet before the door even started to open.
“How
is he!” was the barked question as Vorador left the room quietly closing the
door, the ancient managed a small and worried smile.
“There’s
nothing physically wrong.” Vorador spoke carefully and watched the colour drain
from Raziel’s already pail face, a ‘but’ was obviously coming.
“But,”
the fledgling swallowed, feeling his stomach begin to perform an intricate
series of flips.
“His
memory,” Vorador said confused “its almost like there’s something blocking it,”
the emerald skinned vampire had no other way to explain what was happening,
nothing like this had ever occurred to any of those returned to life, none had
suffered any ill effects, none until now.
“Blocking
it?” Melchiah frowned “what do you mean blocking it? Doesn’t he remember
anything?” Vorador could see the last born of Kain’s children’s hands were
shaking and he swallowed trying to think of ways to explain what was happening.
“Imagine
if you will.” He began “a badly built dam, it will stop a river but some water
will leak through and eventually it will break under the strain.”
“Please
for the love of all that you hold dear do NOT use metaphors,” Raziel
interrupted, Vorador glared.
“There
is a dam in his mind, its stopping his memory returning fully but tiny
fragments are getting through. I believe eventually this will fix itself but
for now . . . he’s still confused.” The emerald vampire stopped letting this
information sink in. He had to admit this was strange, no one else had suffered
this kind of amnesia, many had ‘forgot’ parts of there lives but Kain didn’t
really remember any of his and it confused Vorador greatly that Kain remembered
certain things. The fledgling scion did not remember who Vorador was or anytime
spent with him but he did remember the emerald vampire’s name.
“You’re
sure,” Janos began “that there’s nothing wrong?”
“Nothing
is wrong with him . . . Raziel!” Vorador hissed as Raziel opened the door and
slipped inside, the emerald vampire considered for a moment going after the
fledgling but decided against it, it would be unfair to deny him this when he’d
spent the last fifty years wishing for it. “come to the north parlour I’ll try
and answer your question’s there,” and with that he lead his sire and Melchiah
down the corridor.
The
room Raziel had entered was a lot smaller than he had expected, less ornate
than he had expected to, in fact it was just like all the other rooms except
for the amount of dust. But then again it wasn’t the room he was interested in
it was the covered lump on the bed. Walking over he felt a sense of relief
washing through him and he swallowed hard feeling a lump form in his throat. As
he reached the bed he paused, leaning over pressing his weight on the edge of
the mattress. The ‘lump’ rolled over suddenly and looked at him through half
closed semi gold eyes. Raziel was shocked that fate had taken Kain back this
far in his evolution, even Raziel and his brother’s weren’t that young when
they returned. According to Vorador Kain’s body had only been vampiric for
three months at this stage, old enough to have brought down the first circle
but to young for anything else; why fate had brought him back so young no one
understood.
Kain
yawned widely and just watched him through half closed eyes. It made Raziel
smile, the first real smile he’d shown since his rebirth from the blade. Raziel
remembered waking Kain up before when he had been very young and his father had
almost murdered him, leaping from sleep, holding his fledgling by it’s throat
against the wall. Kain hadn’t actually hurt him that day just frightened him;
it had been a reaction on his father’s part nothing personal. But Raziel had
learnt an important lesson, he wasn’t trusted. To young to even kill his own
food and he wasn’t trusted. Blinking
Raziel brought himself back from memory and looked back at his father who was
still just observing him quietly.
“Hi,”
Raziel swallowed, Kain smiled sleepily at him half hidden under thick furs and
sheets, Vorador had gone a little over the top making sure making sure the
scion didn’t freeze. “Are you alright?” Raziel asked slowly, crushing down the
feeling of grief that now whelmed up inside of him when his father continued to
look at him.
The
soft look Kain had always had for him had gone, something was missing from his
eyes, there was no emotion what so ever, his father didn’t know him at all,
nothing. No memory of any of the time they had spent together. How could this
happen? Fate was a cruel creature to give him back the one thing he had
hungered and longed for above all else, the one thing he would have sacrificed
anything to possess and that one thing had been dropped in his lap but was
robbed of all memory, all knowledge of what they had shared. Kain swallowed as
if he was sore and nodded before speaking.
“I’m
alright,” he yawned again and made to sit up, Raziel put a hand on his shoulder
and pressed slightly keeping him down.
“You
should sleep,” Raziel nodded firmly and moved back to sit in the chair beside
the bed,
“You’re
going to stay there?” Kain asked, an arm coming up above the furs and settling
over them, baring his arm and shoulder to the cool air; showing Raziel just how
much bulk his father had gained through evolution, he wasn’t stick thin now but
he was a lot slimmer than he had been, Raziel had the sudden urge to feed him.
“Yes,
I’ll stay,” he answered “are you hungry?” he added, Kain shook his head
“Why?”
again another yawn, Vorador was right Kain really needed sleep “why would you
sit there . . . I’m fine on my own I don’t need a nursemaid,” Raziel laughed
out loud at the statement getting a confused look from his father.
“It’s
fine honestly,” he managed, it had been so long since he’d really laughed but
it died quickly “you . . . you don’t remember me do you,” he spoke sobering,
Kain shook his head.
“No
I don’t.” he stretched under the furs covering the bed and nearly disappeared
under them
“Well
. . . I was . . . your firstborn,” Raziel forced a smile “my name is Raziel.”
Outside
it started to snow.
≈Δ≈
Raziel
awoke suddenly, jerking awake as he heard the door click closed. He was slumped
forwards leaning on the bed; someone had put a pillow under his head and dumped
a large, heavy fur over his shoulders. He yawned and looked to the bed, Kain
was gone, Raziel bolted upright and stood, turning he almost ran into his
father who in turn almost dropped the tray he was holding. This was the first
time Raziel had really seen him, not covered in cloaks or furs and he was a lot
smaller than Raziel had expected. He hadn’t lost height just bulk, a scary
amount of bulk; he was actually thinner and less built than Raziel was himself
which surprised him. He was dressed in the custom leather trousers; Vorador
seemed to have hundreds of them in all different sizes. Raziel had contemplated
looking for them once but had thought the idea stupid.
“I
brought you breakfast,” Kain smiled “I had to steal this from Vorador so eat it,”
Raziel took the tray from his father who shrugged and clambered up onto the bed
again settling on top of the furs.
“Why
might I ask did you steal this? There is a pantry down stairs, east wing.”
Raziel frowned, Kain smirked wider and laughed but it was a worried laugh
“You
think I’m risking my life by walking all the way to the pantry again?” he
pulled his legs up to himself and rested his head on his knees “no,” he
breathed, Raziel frowned
“What
happened?” he asked, trying to figure out anything that could have gone wrong,
Kain couldn’t have been hurt, not in the mansion
“I
don’t know anyone in this building,”
Kain spoke slowly as if fed up explaining this “yet everyone knows me, everyone’s asking questions about things I have
no memory of . . . its awkward.” Raziel nodded
“It
must be,” he breathed and changed the subject “have you been awake long?”
“A
few hours,” Kain answered, Raziel raised his eyebrows surprised why hadn’t his
father woken him? “I’ve been thinking.” Kain shook his head and watched as
Raziel poured them blood from the bottle on the tray he’d brought up. Accepting
the glass offered Kain spoke again “is there a woman here?” he asked “I think
her name . . . was Ariel.”
“You
remember her?” Raziel asked, excited despite himself. Kain looked fed up.
“Maybe,”
he muttered before leaning back against the pillows “I think so, I’m not sure.”
The look of pure frustration on Kain’s features made Raziel feel a pang of
sympathy.
“I
know how we can be sure,” Raziel smiled “we can go to her; it’s not far . . .”
he paused “that is if you feel up to it?” Kain looked at him an eyebrow raised,
before nodding slowly. “Don’t think Vorador would approve though,”
“Why
should that matter,” Kain mumbled looking if possible more confused
“He’s
overprotective,” Raziel couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him “we’ll be
lucky if he lets you out in a month of Sundays.”
“I’m
not going to ask why,” Kain sighed “there is another way out besides the front
door.” And with that he slid down from the bed and walked over to a cupboard
pulling from it a long coat, fur lined and warm looking. Motioning Raziel over
he kicked a panel on the wall hard, nothing happened, moving across one to the
left and kicked again. Raziel paused it sounded hollow, the fledgling watched
surprised as his father slid the panel back showing a dark unlit passageway.
“Alright,”
Raziel blinked incredulously and nodded. Kain lead them down the tunnel, they
moved forwards for a little while in the pitch darkness before suddenly veering
left, “You seem to know where you’re going,” Raziel commented after a minuet
before the remaining bits of dust from his fathers coat made him sneeze.
“I
. . . I just know.” Kain seemed thoughtful before shrugging in the darkness “I’m
guessing this isn’t the first time I’ve had to use tunnels,” Raziel smiled
remembering what Melchiah had told him about the ‘antics’ his father would get
up to when young.
The
pathway seemed to take longer than Raziel had expected but they eventually
emerged into the cellar, Raziel looked around recognising the mural on the wall
as one from the fountain room. Kain drew him through the room towards what
Raziel assumed to be a wall but with another kick from his father a ‘fake’ part
of the wall was knocked aside revealing a slim dirt tunnel that lead out under
the front courtyard. Following, Raziel was amazed that he hadn’t discovered
these tunnels in the walls and under the courtyards before now, he had thought
he had explored the entire mansion. Kain stopped suddenly causing Raziel to
barrel into him, smirking at his fledgling Kain reached up and pushed at
something Raziel couldn’t quiet make out in the darkness. It turned out to be a
lid of sorts; clambering out Raziel saw that they were in-fact a little way
ahead of the mansion.
A
clean getaway.
“We
need to go west from here,” Raziel pointed and began walking, the snow had fallen
heavily all night and was now quite thick on the ground, it crunched
bewitchingly beneath boots. The swamp had frozen in the night, the water
becoming ice which had then been snowed on it was icy in parts and wet in
others but despite this it was easier to cross than normal. “So,” Raziel
breathed after a few minuets of silence “why build tunnels?”
“I’m
not . . . I think it was because . . . there was fighting, we used the
tunnels,” Kain sounded immensely frustrated as he tried to remember why Vorador
had built the tunnels.
“It’s
a good plan,” Raziel mused “surprise the enemy if they infiltrate and a good
escape route if needed,” Kain just shrugged. They continued on in silence for a
few more minuets, Raziel occasionally glancing at his father who was looking
around the swamp avidly. Briefly the fledgling wondered if this little
excursion was such a good idea, it could help brake the dam Vorador seemed to
think Kain held in his mind but if it didn’t it might just confuse him more,
get him even more frustrated than he already was. A sigh from his father
brought Raziel out of his musings.
“Arial?”
Kain sounded confused “I knew an Arial, I think.” Raziel watched as he shook
his head confused before pulling up the hood on his coat as the snow burnt him.
“You
did,” Raziel frowned trying to think of the best way to put this “she was
blinded and mislead by a force beyond her control and as a result she mislead
you and she blamed you for a very long time,”
“Blamed
me for what?” Kain asked sounding frustrated,
“The
suffering of the land,” Raziel answered waiting for the outburst, Kain however
just blinked and fell silent, taking this new information on board and trying
to understand it.
The
‘mortal’ circle’s dwelling wasn’t far, it was on the edge of the swamp on the
west side and due to the swamp being easier to cross now the walk didn’t take
long, which was a good thing as Raziel was continuing to question whether or
not it had really been a good idea bringing his father out in this. Not only
were the surroundings obviously agitating to Kain but the cold couldn’t be
overly helpful not when he was still so fragile, from what Raziel had seen from
the others who had returned to life many didn’t get out of bed for a fortnight,
Kain had been back for three days and Raziel had dragged him out in the snow.
Mentally the fledgling began to pummel himself; this was stupid, foolish and
selfish. His mental pummelling didn’t stop until he spotted the modest building
the mortal circle had taken for there own. The building was a bit smaller than
Vorador’s mansion but far to large to be called a house. Raziel liked the
building as it was far larger inside than out and not disgustingly decorated;
Vorador had explained that a lot of the Circles buildings were made in this
fashion and it amused Raziel that he could seem to walk forever in one
direction and never find the last room.
Also
the house, was in the mortal circles fashion bobby trapped, luckily Raziel knew
where the triggers were and how to avoid them, although as they made there way
through it was amusing watching Kain mutter about walking specific paths rather
than the simplest and most direct. It was not amusing however when a traps
trigger had been moved or one would active despite there careful steps. Twice
now he ad been burnt slightly. Thankfully however after the first few rooms the
traps became spread out and eventually stopped all together. They turned into one of the non-trapped
corridors and walked up it together Kain still mumbling about ‘stupid traps’
and ‘useless pathways’ when they were interrupted.
“Oh
god,” Raziel span at the voice of Arial, she was stood frozen a few paces
behind them having just come out of one of the alchemy labs.
“Hello
Arial,” Raziel dipped his head but Arial didn’t seem to hear, she was staring
fixedly at Kain who was frowning at her in a curious fashion.
“I
had heard the rumours but I had thought that was all they were, rumours,” she
reached forwards and her finger tips brushed against Kain’s shoulders as if
checking to see if he was real. She pressed harder poking the vampire; Kain
made a small noise of discomfort and took a step back from the strange woman.
“Ariel,”
Kain spoke firmly as if checking she was the right girl to the name, Ariel’s
expression was half composed but a great deal of fear leaked out.
“You
remember me?” she swallowed Kain looked uncomfortable
“No,”
he admitted “I know your name,” he shrugged “I know many names.”
“ARIEL!”
a flustered male voice called from the lab Ariel had appeared out of “did you
get the Worm salt?” however this man to
went ignored by the previous guardian of balance who was to busy being relieved
that Kain didn’t remember her.
“Maybe
that’s for the best,” Ariel said still looking at Kain “maybe now we can start
over,” Kain looked to Raziel who shrugged as if to say ‘don’t ask me’ unsure what else to do Kain smiled at Ariel an
uncomfortable and unknowing gesture.
His
fathers uncertainty made Raziel smile, and at the same time understand his
frustration, Ariel was talking to a man who did not know her and she was
talking as if she were his best friend which had not been the case. Ariel’s
expression suddenly changed to one of shock
“I
. . ., I have to show the others,” she demanded “Nupraptor please call everyone
to the main hall,” she commanded of the small man who still stood in the
laboratory doorway, then reaching forwards she grabbed Kain’s hand and pulled
him down the corridor with her.
“ARIEL!”
Raziel called after her, following her and having to jog to keep up, to his
relief Kain didn’t seem bothered at being dragged instead he just seemed even
more confused. “Arial what are you doing?”
“I’m
taking him to see the others,” she glanced at the running fledgling, her face
flushed “they’ll want to know he’s back.”
“Did
you ask him if he wanted to see the others,” Raziel growled
“Why
are you both talking like I’m not here!” Kain snapped suddenly yanking his arm
back making Arial stumbled and Raziel barrel into him. Taking a deep breath
Kain looked at Raziel and then at Ariel “we’ll go see your others if you wish,
but you do not need to try to dislocate my arm to make me move,” Arial blushed
and nodded turning and leading the way forwards at a more sedate pace.
“I
didn’t know she’d do that,” Raziel mumbled, fiddling with his words, his father
looked at him slowly
“I
think I did,” Kain muttered and Ariel’s blush deepened as she lead them into a
wider corridor that lead to a pair of rather ornate doors. They entered what
was clearly a dinning room, a large room filled with tapestries telling tales
of what was past, a long table capable of seating twenty was in the centre of
the room and it was at this table that they sat and Arial called to Nupraptor
through a collective telepathy the circle have always shared. They were silent
while they waited and Raziel suddenly remembered something important,
“Is
Moebius back yet?” he asked, it was bad enough trying to keep himself in check
around the man who truly had no memory of any of the atrocities he had
committed but he couldn’t imagine stopping his father should he remember
Moebius.
There
anger at the man was justified Raziel thought but his sense of morality which
had often gotten in his way screamed at him that hurting Moebius now would be
pointless and wrong. Moebius had been lead by that ancient creature in the
bowls of the earth just like he had, and if he could be forgiven then why
couldn’t Moebius. His reason was true but his heart thought other wise hence
why he was dubious and grateful hat his meetings with the mortal time streamer
were few and far between. Although he did find it odd, very odd that Moebius
had no memory of his atrocities against the vampires while the rest of the
mortal circle remembered everything as clear as if it had occurred yesterday.
“No,”
Arial smiled “he spends much of his time in the caves now,” she looked piteous
and Raziel sighed.
“It
is good that he is not here,” Raziel tried to look ashamed but failed, he
glanced at his father to see the reaction but there wasn’t one, Kain was
looking around the dinning room in a bored fashion. Glaring suddenly at the tapestry which told
of the battle at Meridian,
Raziel once again felt some pity for his father, it must be so frustrating to
have everyone but you know of your past.
“Do
you remember Moebius?” Raziel asked, trying to draw Kin’s attention away from
the tapestry of him falling at the hands of the Serefan Lord.
“Not
really,” Kain admitted “I remember talking to him and I remember not being on
good terms but other than that,” he shrugged
“Not
good terms,” Raziel laughed “that’s one way to put it.” the door to the room
opened suddenly and the rest of the old circle entered. Each pausing when
he/she caught sight of Kain who was by now looking immensely awkward.
The
circle entered and sat in silence, which in truth just made the situation seem
more uncomfortable. Each member watching the scion some with fear, others with
reverence, only Azimuth managed to keep a neutral face. However the silence was
soon broken by Mortanius who stood and walked around to Kain’s chair.
“It’s
really you?” Mortanius like Arial reached forwards to poke at the vampire Lord
as if making sure he was real. Kain sighed loudly and glared at the
necromancer, who looked mortified “forgive me,” he muttered “I’m just . . .” he was interrupted by Lady Azimuth
“I
thought you would were taller,” Azimuth spoke, “and your too thin! What is
Vorador feeding you?”
“People,”
Kain answered simply, Raziel snorted, Kain shrugged at the looks he was given
and looked if possible even more awkward, Mortanius laughed and went back to
the seat he had taken.
“Tell
me,” the necromancer began “did you choose to come back like this,” he gestured
to Kain’s current form “rather than your evolved form?”
“I
have no clue what you are talking about,” Kain said completely deadpan making
Dejoule snort, “I didn’t choose to come back at all, I just did. I don’t even
remember leaving yet.”
“You
don’t remember,” Bane the nature sorcerer spoke up
“My
memory is . . . evasive at this time,” Kain arranged his words carefully as if
embarrassed by the fact he could not remember who he was talking to or why this
circle was so interested in him.
“Yes,”
Anacroth murmured “some people memory seems to be blocking out certain events,
Moebius for example does not remember any of his contact with you,”
“Nor
I him,” Kain sighed “but it is not just him I do not remember, you say some
peoples memory is selective well I am beginning to think mine just forgot to
return to life when I did.”
“Nothing?”
Mortanius asked
“Nothing,”
Kain agreed wondering to himself when would people understand this.
“You
do not remember Raziel?” Ariel asked looking piteously at Raziel who sighed and
could not meet her eyes. Kain looked uncomfortable again
“He
is becoming more familiar the more time I spend with him,” he admitted “but to
answer your question, no I do not remember Raziel.”
“Doesn’t
it bother you?” Nupraptor asked, Raziel glared at the circle getting more and
more angry with each question. Noting that the questions were becoming more and
more stupid.
“It
is not a problem as of yet,” Kain breathed “Vorador seems quiet sure it will
pass but yes it does bother me,” blatant emphasis was put into the answer, a
plain hint for the circle to shut the hell up about it but then Kain’s eyes
wandered to the tapestries again “tell me of that,” he gestured to the tapestry
portraying his fall in Meridian.
“Kain?”
Raziel asked Kain looked at him then sighed
“I
know I was fighting in that place, I remember the ocean . . . but who was I
fighting?” the vampire asked sharply “why? And how if I fell then did I then
get up?”
“You
fought the Serefan Lord,” Ariel breathed “one of the unspoken, the Hylden
you’re great adversary.”
“The
Serefan were reborn through him and determined to destroy the vampires; you’re
army fought against them but in Meridian,”
Raziel sighed
“We
fell,” Kain nodded “but we were . . . we were stronger I know that, we out
numbered them a great many . . . how then . . . Sebastian,” Kain hissed anger
clear on his features, making several of the circle lean back away from him.
But the anger was short lived as recognition dawned on Kain’s features and the
anger melted to confusion then grief.
“Kain?”
Raziel reached out and placed a hand on his father’s shoulder, Kain blinked
slowly at him.
“I
think we should go now,” Kain breathed.
