chapters 1 – 4 & My interpretation of the ending

Well, the ending to Tales of the Abyss has certain caused
several debates across the internet, so below are some of my thoughts on this and
some supplementary info regarding the game. Please don’t spark debates on the
ending in the review section.

I believe that Lorelei, in return
for setting it free, reconstructed Luke from his memories that scattered at the
end of the game. I don’t think the long hair is even an issue, as Luke cutting
his hair is a minor physical difference which he brought upon “artificially”
himself (a man-made, self inflicted change) – his “natural” state of being
would be a Luke with long, uncut hair therefore when he is revived by Lorelei, would it not make sense for his long hair to
return as well? Besides, I think that
using long hair (and cloaks) to “conceal” (and I use the term loosely) a
characters identity/face is a pretty common practice in anime and J-RPG’s/anime,
it is definitely being used in the ending and shouldn’t be read into too much.

I feel that the whole Van situation lends further credence
to this theory, whereby Van was regenerated by Lorelei
when his fonons were dispersing (albeit it took some
time (one year?) to complete the process) – I felt this tied in strongly with
the events of the ending – Lorelei’s release (and
subsequently thanking Luke,) Luke’s sacrifice, it makes sense that Lorelei would seek to reward Luke for freeing it. After
looking at other peoples interpretations and finalising my own, this is the
conclusion I have come to, with the evidence (Van’s revival) already being
present in the game.

One last thing is that Tear was singing the Grand Fonic Hymn while waiting in Tartaroo Valley
in the final CG scene, which clearly has some significance – who says that Luke
has been wandering for a year? Why would he? Is Luke’s appearance at the end of
the hymn Lorelei’s gift both to Tear and to Luke? I
think so.

However, upon watching the ending again, the Asch stabilisation thing and even Luke/Asch
fusion / big bang theories are also perfectly viable. The ending can be
interpreted in so many different ways it’s not even funny and that’s the beauty
of it – find your own interpretation. Ultimately the how and why aren’t
important, and are not dealt with in this story, top and bottom of the matter
is that Luke came back to Tear.

Anyway, after that little analysis, I’ve gotta
say I’m annoyed that I didn’t get around to finishing the story until several
months after I finished the game, but lots of stuff going on in real life,
combined with my own laziness equals little progress, lol.

I
strived to both maintain and further develop Luke & Tear’s relationship in
this fic, as well as give the so-called “melons” some
attention too (sorry, couldn’t resist!) Obviously we have two new(ish) sides of Tear to play with – emotional at the
beginning of the fic and playful later on (the bath
scene and maid scene were great fun to write.) Luke was, to a certain degree at
least, potentially a blank slate to write on, due to his ”rebirth”
at the end of the game, which I guess also symbolises the end of his atonement
in a way. Anyway, a careful balance had to be struck with Luke’s character so
as not to slip back to the self-loathing/sacrificing character of mid to late
game, and emphasise the growth he experiences endgame, and also postgame. I wanted to bring back a little of the arrogance
and flair of the old Luke, (possibly a factor in Tear’s initial attraction to
him?) coupled with his new personality from late game.

The fic originally started as another one shot lemon – ie: originally I had just envisioned the bath & bedroom
scene which would follow on from the reunion scene, but the amount of discussion
online regarding ending interpretations and my own personal feelings and deep
appreciation for the amazing character development inspired me to expand the fic into a multi chapter affair, which I feel ultimately
did more justice to Luke & Tear’s relationship. I tried to create a sensual
yet intimate scene in the bathroom, and thought it was an interesting way to
start the both second chapter and the third, with a flashback-esque virginity scene forming chapter 2.

Chapter
2 was a bastard to write – really, it was the bane of my existence, what with
an almost daily writer’s block setting in whenever I started to write, and I
must have rewrote the scenes leading from Tear fondling of Luke’s cock to him
pulling her panties to the side innumerable times until I was finally satisfied
they were in character and the scene was sufficiently charged. A balance had to
be struck between the eroticism of the scene, and also what it meant for Luke
& Tear. I intentionally structured it so that Tear wouldn’t climax during
chapter 2. In chapter 2, it’s enough for Tear to merely BE with Luke, hence why
the focus is more on Tear’s emotions. Ultimately chapter 2 wasn’t meant to be
about mind blowing sex, but rather Luke & Tear cementing their love, after
the initial explosion of passion, inhibition and embarrassment sets in and each
stage of their lovemaking is like an awkward obstacle that most be overcome – this is the way I envisioned their first time.
Also, I wasn’t sure about sticking a flashback in the middle of the bath scene,
but I went ahead and did it, I wanted to try something different and it worked.

Chapter
3 was of course the most fun to write, whereby Luke & Tear had got over the
initial awkwardness of being first time lovers, and the beginning of chapter 3
in the bath, we (hopefully) see a side to them both that they don’t show to
other people, but would definitely show to each other. Chapter 3 represents the
two letting go of their inhibitions, and me going a little crazy :)

It’s about the two of them seeking pleasure – at the beginning of chapter 3
Luke is determined to make Tear come, and is annoyed with the lack of self
control he displayed in chapter 2.

The
idea of a bathroom scene came from when I was exploring the Keterburg
Hotel in game, and the Tear’s Pendant subquest was
just waiting to be incorporated into a story, so I feel the two formed a
fantastic merger, which then linked into the maid costume scene. After deciding
that the fic pretty much wrote itself (albeit several
months later.)

I tried
to make Tear a little more kinky and impassioned as the story progresses, hence
the maid outfit, the foot fetish, etc. It’s how I imagine she would be once she
took down her barriers. Plus, I know a load of people love this stuff, and it’s
fun to write :)

I
came up with the idea of a maid walking in quite late into chapter 3’s
creation. I had toyed with the idea of the maid getting a bit horny herself and
asking if she could join Luke and this “unknown/hidden” maid (Tear) for a bit
of threesome action – it would have been amusing to see Tear’s reaction.
Ultimately I decided not to go with this option though, and just made her get
embarrassed and leave quickly.

The
idea for spreading jam over Tear’s breasts again came late into chapter 3’s
finalisation. I originally intended Tear to get oiled up in this scene, and
provide Luke with some action that way, however the
oil idea was ditched in the end in favour of this.

I
deliberated whether or not to include anal sex in this chapter, and ultimately,
I don’t think Tear would be up for it at this stage of their relationship, for
now, it was enough just to have Luke stick his finger up her butt right near
the end – a nice way to up the ante, and her embarrassment at getting fucked at
the window.

I
toyed with the idea of having Tear sit on Luke’s face and had some interesting
plans for where it could lead, but I felt that chapter 3 was long enough as it
is – maybe in a later chapter.

The
line “Your foreplay was sloppy, you missed my G-spot.
You were a mess.” from Tear was a play on words from her victory quote where
she’s criticising Luke’s battle performance, which I hope you all picked up on.

As
for Chapter 4, well, it isn’t finished – so no notes yet :)

more authors would do it, it’s interesting to know what went through their

Notes on the
timeline of the game and the ending:

This was taken from miyuki308’s
post off GameFAQS, I’ve included it below as the timeline of the game crops
up quite often in forum debates. As you can see, the final battle against Van
takes place just over a year before the reunion at the end of the game.
