Femme's iron gate fell quickly - she'd designed it that way. The automatons tasked with that job were quickly waved forward into the blackness ahead by Cid. You know, I could really get used to this kinda control he thought to himself, willing more ninja into the breach as he followed the lead echelon in.
Not five meters in, he almost bumped into a wall that seemed to have haphazardly grown out of the ground. Pausing for a second, he shrugged, ordering his forces around it, wondering where the enemy was. Not that it wasn't a large courtyard - one could easily fit a decent number of football pitches therein - but he wasn't so naive to suspect that whoever resided in this particular fortress was asleep. As he received further reports of more bizarre walls and the increasing fragmentation of his forces, he idly wondered what sort of enemies lurked within. Ah well. Promises were promises, and rewards were delicious.
"Now, Copain." Femme softly whispered to herself, watching silhouettes cut through the gloom towards her, their formations rent asunder by the cunning defenses. She wondered on what sort of world someone who would send troops into a minefield like this could be considered elite. No sooner than she had finished that thought did she see Copain's bizarre flying device, just clearing the walls, leading a steady line of autonomous aircraft into battle.
"Fuck!" Cid jumped behind a wall as two tiny missiles flew overhead. "These goddamn-fucking-shit pieces of...". Machine gun fire raked the wall in front of him. "FUCK!" Time to get out of here. Mentally calling out to his troops, he sprang from the wall, skewering a plane that had just floated by.
Copain had fallen back somewhat from the front of battle. Floating around the rear echelon, he noted with considerable satisfaction the ratio of planes to black-swathed forms. Femme had instructed him to stop the chase at the gate, but why bother? Routs of this nature didn't come every day.
"Now." Two minds, as one; as sorties burst from Rikku's and Monica's gates - not conicidentally, the two keeps flanking the enclave of Femme and Copain.
Day 3: The black moon is rising.
Clash. Four armies. An eerily silent battle is waged under grey skies, as the horde of stone golems and army of machina pincering Yuffie's remaining troops, still pursued by Copain's aerial force, slammed into each other. Rikku seemed to have brought the most guns; a rough estimate of 150 deadly robots versus fivescore magical constructs. Somewhat less than fifty of Cid's complement had been remained, acquitting themselves decently well during the retreat, using the walls for cover, such that Copain had lost roughly a third of his own fivescore.
As his formation slammed into the pitched battle, Auron muttered. "Would that we had sent more!" The machina were having an excellent day at offense, tearing through flesh, stone, and metal with savage abandon, while Femme's instructions did stick (to some degree) and Copain fought a more defensive battle.
Cid, surrounded by a quickly-thinning squadron - very much due to the fact they were in turn surrounded by three armies - scoured the horizon for help. Although he couldn't see it, it was indeed coming. As his protectors fell, he took the only course open: Falling to the ground, unmoving.
With Cid's forces out of the way, Femme's remaining threescore planes were the next ones to bear the brunt of the combined, albeit unallied, assault. With casualties all around him and more troops incoming, Copain staged his retreat, pulling back out of the way as Yuffie's fresh blood arrived on the battlefield, wreaking havoc on Max's and Auron's formations.
"Let's do this!" Yuffie screamed exuberantly as her troops rushed by her, unthinking. "I only wish I had some materia here...oh well!" Launching herself into battle with gusto, she screamed in enjoyment.
Copain stepped out of his aircraft, panting. He'd managed to bring a dozen back safely. Out of a sortie of 100. Femme was waiting. "You overextended yourself. You chased them. I told you not to. I'm...disappointed, Copain." She turned on her heel and walked away. Copain sullenly kicked the side of his scarred battle machine. "Fuck." He had managed 98 kills, though. Not that that was much consolation.
Since Yuffie's arrival, Maximilian had also managed to extricate himself from battle. He knew he hadn't done well. Monica, sword in hand, looked down at him. "Next time, I'm going." The true figures stood at 63 losses and 40 kills. Hardly MVP material. He doffed his cap at the retreating back of his flame-haired mistress, and waved the golems back into formation.
And then there were two.
Auron stood at the rear of his mechanized army. He might have been smiling, if he was ever one to smile. Despite being outnumbered almost 2:1 when Yuffie's second wave of 200 had arrived on the scene, he'd already dwindled that to almost 1:1. A commander has better things to do than fight, he mused, watching Yuffie dismember a machina, her svelte form bleeding from several puncture wounds and machine-gun fire - though the machine-guns that his force commanded were more like peashooters.
Auron continued watching, his machina continuing to overcome the onrushing ninja. To an observer, it would've seemed cruelly unfair - flesh being torn asunder under metal death machines. He did have one personal task left in this battle. As the numbers dwindled, his drones steadily encircled Yuffie's contingent, which had now dropped to a solitary score, Rikku's forces now holding a substantial numerical advantage.
Yuffie watched her last comrade drop to the ground, a trio of robots crawling over him, disembering his corpse. A long stream of troops was pouring out from Rikku's keep, anxious to provide a safe trip home - if only a few hundred metres away - for the victors. She saw a tall man garbed in red step into the circle of carnage surrounding her. And she felt no more.
Cid watched out of one eye as he saw Auron render Yuffie brutally unconscious with the flat of his blade. He knew he had to follow her. No matter where.
Auron brought his blade down again, before turning and trudging back to the keep, two bodies being borne behind him by machina. Rikku esctatically jumped all over him the minute he was in the central courtyard! "We did it! We did it! Woo-hoo!" Auron roughly shrugged her off, indicating Cid and Yuffie's unconscious bodies behind him. "Do you have plans for these?" A positively maniacal smile crossed the golden-haired trickster's face.
"Oh, do I."
Auron distinctly felt a chill run down the back of his spine.
