Notes: Is chapter didn’t go the way I wanted to but, hey,
what can you go about it? At least it’s a bit longer. Wow, I can’t believe I
wrote three chapters yesterday. Then again, they were pretty short.
Extra notes: In case you’re wondering, this chapter isn’t an

The
Race of Honour Men
Chapter 5 –
The Mistresses
Carah raised her
eyebrows as she saw Toni pull his Hellenbach GT in the side-lane while Maria
grinned wolfishly.
“Nice car,” Carah
nodded the vehicle,” Present from JD?”
“Something like
that,” Toni shrugged.
Carah raised her
eyebrows again,” Figures. Vinnie would never be that generous,” She smirked at
him.
”Vinnie told me to
pick you two up, then drop you off to him,” Toni informed her.
Carah sighed,”
Alright then. Can you drop off Maria first then, please?” she asked and climbed
in the back seat while Maria took the front seat, next to Toni.
Toni was taken
back to Carah’s sudden politeness but got back in the car and backed out of the
lane, into the road of traffic in Chinatown.
He drove the way of the road, out of Chinatown,
pass the Hospital and straight across into Saint Mark’s to Maria’s apartment.
Carah got out with Maria to help get her shopping bags inside and then climbed
back in Toni’s car.
“Bye Mar!” She
called out of the opened window,” I’ll call you later!”
Maria waved back,”
See you later honey,” Her eyes swiftly moved to Toni,” See you later, Fido,”
Her wolfishly grin appeared again before she disappeared inside.
“So, where do you
live?” Toni asked as he reversed out into the traffic again.
“On the corner of Hepburn Heights and the Red Light District, next
to the City Bank,” Carah replied as she rummaged around in her handbag.
Toni drove the car
along the traffic, directly across until he reached the crossing near his
“home” and turned down the hill.
“I’m sorry you had
to play chaperone today,” Carah spoke up as she applied mascara to her lashes
while they waited in traffic.
Toni merely
shrugged,” Think nothing of it,”
Carah paused and
looked at Toni as if he was stupid,” C’mon, Vinnie’s giving you these stupid
jobs when you’ve only just got back. Then again, he’s always been a control
freak,”
Toni’s eyebrows
furrowed as he glanced at Carah in the rear-view mirror,” Really?”
Carah nodded as
she wiped her finger under her eyes and soothed them across her cheeks,” Yeah,
always has in the time I’ve known him. He’s the same in our relationship,”
Toni averted his
eyes from the rear-view mirror as the lights turned green and drove forward
again, his puzzled expression still fixed on his face. Carah looked up as they
moved and saw Toni’s doubtment and scuffed.
“Wait, you thought
I wore the pants in our
relationship?” Carah laugh at this and went back to putting on her make-up,” If
only, honey, if only,”
Toni rotated
around the curve of road and pulled up to the apartment complex beside the
Bank.
“I’m just gonna
drop this stuff in and quickly get changed. Can you wait ‘til then?” Carah
asked as she gathered up her bags.
“Sure,” Toni
turned around,” Do you need help with those?”
Carah sharply
faced him, looking almost surprised at his suggestion,” What? Oh, no. Nah, I’ll
be fine,” She flashed a quick smile before getting out and trotting up to her
apartment.
She came back out
a few minutes later, fresh faced, dressed in a mid-length lilac thin-strapped
dress with bow strap heels and sunglasses, despite the evening sky, and climbed
back in car.
“You always dress
like that?” Toni asked as Carah settled in her seat.
Carah clicked her
tongue against her teeth and shrugged,” It’s part of being a Mafiosi girl,”
Toni frowned as he
backed out and slipped easily into the traffic,” What do you mean?”
“Ha, I guess Sal
never told ya, huh?” She avoided her eyes away to look out the window,” You may
have heard of my father, Karl Jacaruso. He’s retired now, but he still does a
couple of favours for Sal, along with my two brothers, Magic and Hell. Back
when I was working for JD, it was a really dark time and I got into a lot of
trouble, so Sal helped me out in exchange for me doing a few jobs for him,”
“You used to work
for JD?”
“Yeah, at his
club,”
She used to be a stripper.
“I was practically
raised in the Leone family,”
“What about your
mom? Didn’t she ever try and get you out of it?” asked Toni as he drove up the
hill and pass through the lane into Chinatown.
Carah shook her
head,” My Ma died when I was eighteen,”
“I’m sorry,”
Carah shrugged,”
Life’s natural passings, toots. Though, of course, my Da was deliriously happy
when he found out I was engaged to Sal’s right-hand man,”
Toni’s knuckles
whitened as he gripped the steering wheel tighter and nodded,” I’m sure,”
“Then Da got
remarried to Div, she runs a group of ‘mafia girls’ who do ‘favours’ for the
Leone boys,” Carah twisted her head back towards turned and raised her eyebrows
over her lenses,” Div’s the reason why I met Vinnie,”
Toni said nothing
as she steered the car pass Callahan Bridge and into Trenton.
“Listen, Antonio,
if you want me to speak to Vinnie-,”
“It’s fine,” Toni
cut in and parked the car beside Vinnie’s warehouse.
“Alright, if you
say so,” Carah whispered as she climbed out. Toni climbed out as Carah walked
past his door and followed her into the warehouse. Carah took her sunglasses
off as soon as she saw Vincenzo perched on the edge of his desk.
“Baby!” Vincenzo
smiled and stood up properly.
Carah smiled
widely and kissed him hungrily when she reached him. Toni stood a few steps
from them and looked anywhere but at them as they kissed, but there was hint of
revulsion on his face.
“We bothering you,
Antonio?” Vincenzo stipulated as Carah finished the kiss, slightly annoyed of
his disrespect.
“Vinnie!” Carah
hissed quietly at him, looking at him then at Toni and back.
“What?” he
questioned his fiancée who didn’t return an answer, just a glance at the floor,
but turned back to Toni,” Listen tough guy, it’s getting late, so why don’t you
just go home? I expect you back here in the morning,”
Toni made no
response but rapidly made his exit and walked out the warehouse, eager to get
away from Vincenzo and his little “princess”.
“Hey!”
Toni turned around
as he stepped out into the pavement to see Carah standing in the doorway of the
warehouse, clasping her hands timidly.
“I’m sorry about
Vinnie,”
Toni narrowed his
eyes slightly at her,” I don’t need you to stand up for me,”
She shrugged as
she walked up to him,” Then, I’m sorry about that too,”
They stared at
eachother for a moment; eyes swaying as they looked at eachother properly,
before Toni looked away and started to turn away.
“I’ve gotta go,”
“Wait,” Carah
placed her hand on his shoulder to face her again.
She stared at him
again for a second before reaching up on her toes and kissing his cheek.
“Thanks for
today,” she said in a near-whisper and just as quickly turned and ran back into
the warehouse.
Toni simply stared
after her, as if he was expecting her to come back, but after a few minutes,
turned around and walked back to his car.
What the hell was that?
