Chapter
5: Safe and Sound
“Eeeeeeeeeek! Oh dear gods!”
screamed Orrent when Alyssa materialized back at the guildhall, jumping back in
shock and turning his eyes away from her in horror. Around the room eyes
stared at her from every side.
“Alyssa! Oh you poor thing… dear
gods what have I done?!” cried Anarenen, jumping up and grabbing an old robe
nearby. He raced over and wrapped her up in it, pausing a little as he noticed
the blood and semen flowing down her legs. He hurried to cover her up, trying
carefully to touch her as little as possible. He finished covering her
delicately then backed away in sadness and horror as the girl broke into heavy
sobs, unable to tear his copper eyes from the girl. Edwinna sat fixated, her
jaw dropped in obvious surprise and horror. With a start, she flung the papers
she had been reading to the side and with a few words uttered under her breath
a bright blue ball of sparkling flames materialized cackling in her hands, her
eyes glowing with hatred as she looked at Anarenen menacingly. He looked up
and his eyes widened as he took another step back, hitting the table and
knocking his alembic to the ground with a crash.
“I swear I had no idea this would
happen! I would never have sent her out alone if I did!” he cried, backing
away in terror, “You know I wouldn’t! You know me better than that Edwinna!”
Edwinna advanced on the Altmer and the cackling ball grew larger, seeming at
once to burn and freeze with an almost electrical blue flame.
“Stop it!” cried Alyssa, trembling
at her sister’s rage.
“Poor thing, she’s seen more than
enough violence for one day, don’t you think?” came the soothing voice of an
Imperial woman; the same one Alyssa recognized earlier teaching the Dunmer
servant to read. Edwinna shook herself and sighed deeply as the menacing ball
grew smaller until it vanished altogether. Anarenen still looked frightened
but more than anything concerned for the fate of his new pupil as his eyes
returned to her.
“What happened? Were you
attacked? Who was it?” asked Edwinna, “Tell me and I will slaughter them
myself! How many did this?” Alyssa just sobbed.
“Edwinna, we have to get her to the
hospital immediately. I don’t think my potions are going to fix this one,”
Anarenen said quietly.
“Quiet! You’ve done enough! Once
we find out who did this, I’ll go out and hunt them down while you apply a balm
to her wounds. They’ll be dead before morning. Tell me who did this!” Edwinna
yelled frantically as she pulled her sobbing sister against her chest in a hug,
soothing her tangled hair.
“I, um, don’t think she’s going to
want me or any other man applying anything to any part of her body for a
while…” Anarenen whispered quietly, trying not to raise his voice and startle
Alyssa.
“What?! What are you saying?!”
asked Edwinna in horror, looking from Anarenen to her little sister before she
realized the obvious. With tears in her eyes, she clutched Alyssa tighter.
“We should really get her to the
hospital…” Anarenen whispered, a single tear falling from his copper eyes as he
looked down at the shaking girl. Edwinna nodded in agreement. Turning to
Alyssa, she asked if it would be alright for Anarenen to carry her, as she
wasn’t strong enough herself, and assured her that everything would be alright
and that the nightmare was over. Alyssa nodded between tears and looked up at
Anarenen, who smiled down at her before bending over to lift her delicately
against his warm chest.
The trio hurried upstairs and
Erranil quickly transported them to Balmora, where they rushed through the
guild, ignoring the stares of the members who saw them. They hurried out into
the night to the most western part of town where the huge Balmora hospital was
located. Only when the nurses cleared a bed for the trembling girl did
Anarenen set her down as delicately as he had picked her up. Edwinna clutched
her hand and the nurses brought a potion which she drank, causing her to fall
instantly into a deep sleep.

When she awoke, it was morning and
Edwinna stood pacing the room, talking to one of the elderly nurses on duty.
She hurried over when she saw Alyssa’s open eyes and asked how she was feeling.
“I don’t know. I want to say good
but…” Alyssa trailed off as the events of the previous day sunk in once more.
Edwinna sat down on the edge of the bed, taking Alyssa’s hand.
“I know you don’t want to talk
about it, and I can’t say that I blame you, but Alyssa dear, do you have any
idea who did this to you?” Edwinna asked.
“No,” sobbed Alyssa, “I know he was
young, about your age actually, Imperial, with thick straight light brown hair
tied back in a rogue’s knot with a black ribbon. He had piercingly cruel blue
eyes, and seemed very strong… I felt all of my strength drain from my limbs at
his touch.”
“Imperials do have that ability,
naturally,” said Edwinna, “It’s called the ‘Star of the West.’ But what sort
of man was he? Not a guard I assume? Or was he? You can never tell with
these things. How was he dressed? A bandit, maybe? A smuggler? They tend to
hide out in the old caverns along the Ascadian Isles. This area is Hlaalu
territory – were you near a plantation by any chance?”
“Actually, I was right near a
cavern. I don’t know where it lead… I suppose he may have been a bandit or
smuggler – he certainly wasn’t dressed like a nobleman, nor did he look – or
act – the part. Yes, he was probably one or the other, maybe both,” Alyssa
mused. She shuddered at the thought, her innocence stolen by one so vile. She
had been abstaining until she met the man she would marry, and always assumed
that she would experience this act in love, not hatred. She burst into tears
at the thought.
“I knew it. I just knew it,” mused
Edwinna aloud, “Well, if it makes you feel any better, I’ll clear out every one
of those disgusting caverns myself until that man and everyone he knows lies
dead at my feet.”
“Oh but it won’t help,” cried
Alyssa, “I don’t really know who he was. And even if you do kill him it won’t
undo the damage he’s caused.”
“Did he say anything to you?
Anything at all?” asked Edwinna.
“He kept calling me a Telvanni
witch,” Alyssa offered.
“Telvanni? What in Oblivion would
a Telvanni woman be doing way out here?” Edwinna sounded surprised, “Hmm, he
must not be very bright. Either he thinks all wizards are Telvanni and
recognized you as a spellcaster or he noticed that book you’ve hidden in your
alchemy bag and assumed you’d already joined the House. I doubt it makes a
difference in your case really, it was probably just an insult to keep you off
guard,” Edwinna said softly, running her hand through Alyssa’s hair. Alyssa
started. Edwinna found her book?
“Oh yes, I found the book. I went
through your bags after you left looking for some clue as to what happened.
But don’t worry, I see no problem with you furthering your education – I was
never one for banning books of any sort. And the Telvanni have never done
anything to me. Though I can see why you’d hide such a thing around the other
mages. Silly political struggles, that’s all. Doesn’t interest me,” she
mused, a small grin creeping onto her face. Alyssa managed a small smile
before another wave of sadness hit and she once again burst into tears.
“Edwinna, no one is ever going to
want to touch me now. I will never be married; I will never have children… If
my beloved back home knew about this…” Alyssa broke off frantically into sobs.
“Oh hush. That’s all nonsense.
Nothing needed to be said to determine that you had been raped rather brutally,
but no one thinks any the less of you for it. It certainly isn’t your fault –
it could just as easily have happened to anyone else. Poor thing, it was quite
obvious from the amount of blood you lost that you had been a virgin at the
time. I can’t even imagine the pain you must feel. The man who did this to
you deserves nothing short of death,” Edwinna assured, raising her voice a
little as she glared off into the distance.
“But what if I should have further
consequences because of this…” Alyssa started, suddenly clutching her belly in
horror as the thought materialized.
“Hmm? Oh. Don’t worry about that
dear, the nurses saw to preventing that unfortunate possibility while you
slept. Really they’ve been taking very good care of you,” Edwinna smiled in a
reassuring tone.
“I can’t bear to face anyone
again. I feel like I’m ruined. No one has any reason to respect me anymore
after this, showing up at your guild in the state I did… Not only am I ruined,
but everyone knows it,” Alyssa cried.
“Don’t be silly. The last thing
anyone is going to care about around here is the state of your bed. In fact,
you’d be considered more the outsider by keeping it empty. Around Morrowind
it’s simply expected that young girls are sexually experienced – although
thankfully most don’t have your unfortunate experience. No one at all holds
their consensual choices against them, and likewise no one will hold your
unwilling experience against you. The only reaction you are going to get from
the people around here is pity – not for your so called “ruined reputation” but
for the manner in which you were taken advantage of and brutalized through no
fault of your own. You are blameless, my dear – so stop blaming yourself,”
Edwinna assured.
“But surely not everyone is
sexually active on the island. I mean, you’ve never written home about any
relationships…” Alyssa started. Edwinna glanced away, a touch of red coming to
her cheeks.
“Do I look like I have time for
romantic relationships? I’m far too busy with my research. That being said,
I’ve found that a bit of passion on occasion leads to clearer thinking. It’s
one less thing to worry about really,” Edwinna explained, lowering her voice to
a whisper.
“Really? I would never have
guessed! But, um… who… you know…” Alyssa inquired eagerly, her eyes full of
curiosity.
“Well, I suppose it’s no secret
really. Everyone else knows about it. Anarenen and I have a… working
arrangement of sorts… that proves mutually beneficial at times…” Edwinna
trailed off, her cheeks flushing crimson as she heard Alyssa’s surprised
giggle.
“Anarenen? But you nearly killed
him last night!” Alyssa started. It was widely known that the Altmer were weak
to fire, frost, and shock, and Edwinna had nearly unleashed all three on the
high elf alchemist.
“He shouldn’t have sent you out to
catch your death so ill prepared!” she replied crossly, “Still, I was a bit
hasty in that, but ultimately no harm done. I only wanted to scare him
really…”
“Well you shouldn’t. I think he’s
very nice. He obviously had no idea that this rogue Imperial would do this to
me,” Alyssa retorted. Edwinna sighed, rolling her eyes.
“And what about the fact that he’s
your subordinate? Isn’t that a bit… inappropriate?” asked Alyssa brazenly.
Edwinna shot her a glare but calmed herself down before responding, not wanting
to add to her sister’s already miserable state.
“As I said, no one cares about such
things around here. Besides, he initiated the whole thing to begin with. And
it’s not like I have time to go out and bother with other possibilities in that
particular department,” she replied curtly. Alyssa had further questions, lots
of them, but realized that she was making her sister uncomfortable. After all,
the confession had already made Alyssa feel better. If even her beloved older
sister, the great guildmaster and world famous researcher, had long since
become more open about her sexuality since moving to Morrowind, then it really
must not matter so much in this new land. Perhaps people would not hold her
“damaged” status against her. She hoped not, at any rate. She sighed sadly.
“You’re alive dear, and for that I’m
ever so thankful. We can work together to mend any other damage that has been
caused to you, but for now, I’m just thankful to once again have snatched you
from the jaws of death,” Edwinna said soothingly, placing her cool hand to
Alyssa’s forehead to feel her temperature. Alyssa smiled, feeling soothed as
her emotions began once again to settle. She had already survived so much.
She was certain that she would survive this as well and hopefully emerge even
stronger for it.
But the pain of the previous day
set in once more as she tried to move. Her body felt like one giant sore,
particularly in paces she would just as soon forget. She was not eager to
repeat any such experiences, loving or hateful. The memory of the Imperial
glowering coldly down at her as she cried, silently pleading with him to spare
her as he ripped through every last shred of dignity she possessed, sent new
waves of humiliation through her. Why would anyone do this to anyone? How
could they live with themselves afterwards? What moral code allowed such
violence? She shuddered. She did not really want to find out.
A young Kajiit nurse came in with
another potion, smiling tenderly at the two sisters as she handed it to Alyssa
to drink. As she drank the concoction, another wave of exhaustion fell over
her and she drifted off to sleep once more. The sleep was less restful this
time, for she was haunted by nightmares which forced her to relive her terrible
experience all over again. Yet when she awoke, the nightmares had vanished and
a new strength and determination coursed through her veins.
