Chapter Four; An Actual Threat
Espio had woken up early this particular morning. He still hadn't got over how he could have just lost control of his instincts like that. To his rationale, Vector was just Vector, his childish and aloof employer. It appeared that in that single moment, he was something different, and Espio couldn't fathom why. To try and ease himself, he started doing chores around their home, even though their home was nothing but a cardboard box and some trash cans for bedrooms. Anything to distract him was good enough, he had reasoned. He swept the floor of the cardboard box, sorted the trash bags into orders of size, found something for their breakfast, removed the rats from the money store and prepared a client list for their detective work that day. Vector slowly woke up during the end of this, and was still groggy when he crawled of of his can and went to claim his breakfast. “Hey Vector, I was thinking” Espio began, further trying to distract himself from the previous night, “since out client reward was a little higher than usual, we could potentially buy something like a safebox to keep our future funds in. At least then we cut down the risk of having rats chew into our hard earned cash.” Vector, still sleepy, wasn't all there yet, and mindlessly nodded towards Espio's advice.
A few hours later, he wasn't all pleased to learn exactly what he had agreed to. “Pah, we could have just used an extra brick on it or somethin', that'd keep the rats away.” Espio sighed before taking another bite of his egg mayonnaise sandwich. “A brick would have damp on it, would you want the money to mould and deteriorate before we could use it?” Vector grumpily admitted that it was probably for the best to get the box, and then took a chew out of his own sandwich, a bacon and sausage kind. He didn't have the heart to admit he'd also wanted to save a little so he could secretly get something nice for Espio, as a little thanking token. Just as they got to the crossing to head back to their makeshift home, a popgun shot was heard by all in the immediate area. “Sounds like there's a robbery going on!” shouted a young fawn. “Oh my goodness gracious, I have everything in my purse, somebody protect me!” screamed an elderly horse lady. Vector immediately took the initiative and struck a pose as he announced to the crowd “Don't worry folks, the Chaotix Detective Agency are on the case!” The crowd cheered as Vector took a hold of Espio's arm and dragged him in the direction of the gunshot.
“What are we looking for again, Vector?” Espio asked. In his eagerness to earn money and grab a case, Vector hadn't quite thought this plan through, and they were now lost in the darker suburbs of the city. They were both tough men, so they carried on persistently along winding roads and gravelly pavements. Residents were obliviously having barbeques due to how warm the day was, so they also had the constant temptation of an easy meal. Nonetheless, they both stayed on track and, for their efforts, another popgun shot rang out. This one was much louder than before, so it meant that they were close. “See, pal? I told you I knew where we were goin'!” Vector dashed on ahead this time, Espio lingering behind despite being the faster and sleeker of the two. “Vector, you idiot!” he shouted in vein to his employer, “We need to stick together on this one!”
Again, their running had led to a seeming dead end. Vector crouched down a bit, exhausted. Espio took the time to catch up and tried to help him a little. As he moved his arm in to help Vector's breathing, he unintentionally slipped his hand over his stomach. And my, did it ever feel good to his touch. Espio rubbed at Vector's abdomen, loving how firm it was when his hand glided over it. Vector was simply puzzled at Espio's behaviour. “Oy, that isn't my respiratory system, Espio!” he barked, knocking Espio out of the trance he was in. “Move your arm up, you need to rub at the lungs!” “Right, boss!” Espio hastily replied, forgetting that he always referred to Vector as an equal for a moment. The rub was cut monumentally short when a popgun bullet zipped right past them. They broke apart and looked up to see Fang the Sniper posing with his trusty gun smoking. “You affectionate twats done with your caring yet? Because Eggman's put a bounty on your heads, and I want a share of it myself!” Fang fired another shot, but Espio expertly dodged it with his Ninjutsu. All they knew now was that they had to stand their ground!
