Random sat on the floor between two candles. Only now did Anders notice that his chest and belly were criss crossed by livid scars. How had he missed that? He supposed that the candles had been placed to hide as well as to entice. A long thick ridge ran from just below Random's right nipple to end near his groin and other less obvious scars crossed it, making a tracery rather like ancient elven runes. A painful looking burn scar was on the left pectoral, sweeping up toward the shoulder. He should have known, he supposed. A Grey Warden's life is not easy, and while mages like Anders and archers like Nathaniel were standing off on bluffs, the warriors and rogues were right there among the knives and axes, and, no doubt occasionally ill aimed fireballs and cones of cold from their own mages. Still he had had no idea. Anders shivered a bit, thinking of the damage that he might have done to friends and companions. Unfortunately, Random, who had been watching him closely, caught the shudder and misunderstood. Dropping his head, Random said, "Yes. I know. It can be a shock. Forgive me my vanity. I wanted you to see the more… perfect… parts of me before seeing… this." A cold hand grasped Anders heart and he hurried to make amends. "No. Please. No that is not it… that's not why I shivered." "And you expect me to believe it was only the draft in the room?" Random broke in bitterly. He had so seldom, never really, heard his stoic Commander bitter, that Anders was shook even further, and, for the first time since they had reached the room, since they had began, he felt himself droop. Oh no! Not that! That would be even more misunderstood and less forgiven. Bracing himself, quickly doing everything in reverse of what he did when he wanted to suppress an unruly erection, he willed himself hard, then taking a breath he began what, he realized, was a very important speech for him. "It was not the cold. It was not seeing you. You are beautiful, like a carved rune stone. It was realizing what I might have done to my fellows through carelessness or incompetence. Especially that burn on your shoulder. It looks so painful. And I realized that it could have been caused by some bolt I unthinkingly threw out in battle." Random looked up at him, quirking his mouth, "LIke a carved rune stone, huh? I suppose I can forgive you much for that. The burn is old and well healed. It no longer pains me and couldn't have been done by you. Please, do not let anything you see tonight make you hesitant in battle. Believe me, I need you up there throwing all the flame and bolts you can muster. If anything goes awry, I can take it, as I think this demonstrates," he said, gesturing ruefully at his chest and torso. He continued, "Each of these, each scar, has a story. Maybe some day I'll tell them to you." Anders wondered, could he really remember the story behind every scar? There were so many. Then he thought, yes, I'm sure he can, I certainly would. It made him think about his own body which was, despite the Templars and harsh treatment, unmarked. Would that change in the coming years? Would he care? He'd always been proud of his body, not heavily muscled like Random's, but nicely sculpted with smooth perfect skin. Random had pulled up his legs and rested his forehead on his knees. "Give me a moment," he said. "I do believe you. I must. That you are not repelled, but still… a moment if you would." His heart all but breaking, Anders forced his hand to work more vigorously while Random's head was hidden. Never had keeping his manhood at strict attention been more important to him, and it was all for show, just an emotional support, not even something to be put to use, at least not yet. Ah, things were better now. It helped, he found, to have a beautiful naked elf seated a few feet from him. He reached out a tentative toe and nudged Random. "Are you all right?" he asked. Random looked up smiling and Anders felt himself relax. "Yes. Silly of me. Sorry. Vanity is a harsh mistress and she's been particularly harsh to me in recent years. Not that long ago my skin was smooth and unblemished like yours. Of course I was also a skinny waif then and didn't have these heroic rippling muscles, so I suppose there are compensations." Anders laughed and it felt so good. Like fresh, cold stream water after a forced march. No, better. Random continued, "In any case you have wickedly disrupted my plan, but you won't get away that easily. I have regained my composure and am now ready to pick up where I left off. But first, a question. Tell me if it's true or not that you are a virgin." Without thinking Anders rose up, almost stood, and indignantly spat back, "A virgin! Of course I'm not a virgin! I've been with many many women, starting with a fetching young mage instructor when I was but a youth of sixteen. Where did you hear that? Oghren? I'll spit him on my staff!" Random patted the air in a calming gesture. "My apologies for insulting your manhood. I told you earlier I would probably insult you again tonight. But you misunderstand me. I didn't mean with… women. I only wanted to know if you'd been with a man before. Things can be… different… for someone used to women and I wanted to know your level of experience so that I could… adjust… my plan accordingly." Embarrassed by his outburst and the stupidity of his misunderstanding, Anders said "I wish you would let up with plans and things already. It sounds so, well, clinical, like you're planning a battle strategy or something. I'm a terrible romantic at heart you know? Can't we allow things to just sort of naturally, you know, happen?" "No," was the reply he received, but he's calmed some now. "No, and it really is important for me to know if you've been with a man before. So have you?" It was Anders' turn to say, "No." He felt humiliated that it came out as a sort of squeak, not that manly, booming reply he's intended. "I didn't think so, but I didn't want to insult you, yet again, by assuming that you did not know things that you know." Random had risen and was walking about the room, oblivious to the cold. Anders looked up, scratching his head. "I suppose that's good, but what's so complicated anyway. You make it sound like a seventh level spell or something; something really complex. I've only been with women, true, but we always seem to muddle through and find out what goes where." Sighing, Random came to a standstill, saying, "First, I prefer not to 'muddle through.' I find more… pleasure… when things work properly… in every respect. Second, it would be different if you were a man who naturally prefers other men. But you are not. I know that I have seduced you and I know that I have done it for my own purposes, but also for the good of all who follow me in battle, so I feel a certain responsibility towards you. You will need to live with that or leave now." Looking hurt, Anders asked, "You would let me leave, now, just like that?" Sighing again and looking up at the ceiling, Random replied, "If that's what you wish, I must, but I do hope that you will choose to stay. Despite your objections, I do think you will… enjoy… my plans."
