Treacherous. That was one word that Gem had always described the Capital Wasteland. She had always had a knack for using language to fit her needs. Gem was known for being spunky and laid back and the words down to earth seemed to fit her perfectly most of the time. But when it came to walking out alone in the wasteland, she was nervous, if not overly so. Gem normally didn’t go on walks like this, but after her ordeal four days ago she felt like she needed to think some things over. Could she really blame her indescretion on a radiation related tumor? Was she not still in control of free will or did something as enigmatic and transparent as radiation control her destiny? She shook her head as she felt a hot tear stain her cheeks. She wiped the annoying splash of salty water from her cheeks and she coughed as she cradled her shotgun in her arms as she strolled. She wasn’t too far from Megaton. As confident as she was by nature, she still wanted to keep the huge metal doors and ramshackle iron barriers within her sight should problems arrive. Gem was just coming across the cracked, broken road that in her mind symbolized her entire life. From being born to a happy family and being raised to speak her mind and be respectful at the same time…to losing her mother and father in the span of two weeks, being enslaved, being bought by Lucky Harith and forced into prositution, and crying herself to sleep every night. Yeah it wasn’t so good to be her, she thought. There were bright spots in the dark fog that had become her life after her father and mother had passed on, but hell, meeting Andrew Ross was that bright ray of sunshine that pierced the dark and she was able to smile for the first time ever since those fateful events of her life. Now he had been ripped from her life. She understood his quest, but she was jealous to have her new ‘dad’ by her side, but she could never deny him what he felt had to be done. As Gem looked up, she was shaken from her thoughts. To her right was a gravelly hill with an old rusted sign that read “scenic overlook”. beyond that was a slatted wooden door that all through her years in the wasteland had never thought to open. She wasn’t very curious by nature. What caught Gem’s eye however was the figure emerging from the darkness of the void she had never thought to check out. It was a shapely woman who was wearing a blue and yellow colored jumpsuit. The woman seemed to be trying to get used to the powerful rays of the sun. if she was a vault dweller as Gem thought, then she had lived her entire life in darkness, only to now break away from the underground into the harshness of the wasteland’s sun. Gem climbed up the dirty embankment and called out to the woman. She took her hands away from her eyes and smiled at Gem. Gem finally climbed the rest of the way up and the woman in the jumpsuit shook her hand. “Hey. My name is Amata. Im the overseer of vault 101.” Amata said pointing a thumb back at the wooden door she had just exited from. “Ive heard your name before.” Gem said, lowering her voice and glaring at the young dark haired girl whom she guessed to be around 19 or 20 years old. Andrew had talked to Gem about how the woman before her had hurt him. “You must know Andrew.” Amata said, a frown appearing on her face as she crossed her arms. She sighed. “Yea. Im very fond of him.” Gem said, crossing her own arms, but in an angry fashion versus Amata’s unbelieving stance. “Arent you a bit young?” Amata asked incredulously. “Not that way. But Andrew is very important to me nevertheless. And I think you and I should talk.” Gem said, narrowing her eyes. -------------------------- The mall had been quieter than when Andrew had first traipsed through the ruined center of the former free world’s capital. Andrew still held a firm grip on his rifle. He had learned early on never, ever to make the mistake of getting comfortable when roaming the wastes. That was a surefire way to die. The only problem for Andrew was that he had to kill a super mutant across the way that had gotten a bead on him. Thankfully the bullet from the mutant’s hunting rifle only dinged the leather armor he was wearing, bouncing off one of the hard metal plates. That was the only incentive that Andrew needed before dropping to a knee and shooting the mutant who had started lumbering his way. However since that pivotal heart stopping moment, all had been uneventful. Andrew was nearing his destination. Above the entrance to yet another of the ruins of DC’s many subway tunnels was the building that Andrew was seeking, the museum of history. The single roving guard was a female ghoul. “hello tourist. Come to take in the sights of the mall?” the ghoul rasped. “tourist?” Andrew asked, willing her to explain herself. “don’t say you are not. You come here to the mall, see the sights, look around. So you are a tourist.” the ghoul explained, cradling her assault rifle in both hands. “is Underworld located here?” Andrew asked, changing the subject. “Of course. Most ghouls in there will treat you with respect, so long as you don’t cause any trouble inside. And as long as your caps are good.” the ghoul said with a misshapen smile. “I assure you they are very good. If you will excuse me.” Andrew said with a grin. The ghoul let him past and he opened the heavy oaken doors to the museum of history. Andrew gaped as he saw how big the room inside was. Bones of some giant creatures he could not identify littered the inside, however the bones of one such gargantuan creature remained halfway constructed, its large skull letting out an eternally silent roar as it stood where it was constructed so long ago. Andrew was more taken aback by the humungous concrete skull that lined the back wall, its mouth open and presenting the entry doors into what was known around the wasteland as Underworld, the city of the ghouls. Andrew approached the doors to Underworld and looked down at his constant companion, Dogmeat who whined, but looked ready to defend Andrew at the slightest hint of danger. Andrew stroked the dog’s ears and nodded as he opened the door. The hall within was wide and was decked in marble. The wooden staircase rails on either side of the hall were made of a dark mahogany, the stairs themselves cut from marble as well. A large statue in the center of the room depicted men trying to escape from what was presumed in the looker’s mind as hell. The place was interesting indeed. A ghoul in a light blue jumpsuit approached Andrew and shook his hand. “I‘m Winthrop. Welcome to underworld. Start any problems here and Cerberus will have to deal with you. Understood?” the ghoul said by way of greeting. “im not here to cause trouble. I only want to resupply and ill leave you guys alone.” Andrew said, placing his hands on his hips. He knew this was the wasteland, but he was getting tired of everyone assuming he was out to kill them. “in that case welcome fully. Everyone here will trade with you if your caps are good. So welcome aboard.” Winthrop said with a grin before stepping aside. Andrew felt a sharp sting in his chest. The bullet never penetrated but Andrew assumed the impact had left a nasty cut that should get inspected right away. Andrew shook his head and headed into the hall. Looking left and right he noticed the general store. “knock knock.” Andrew said with a smile as he entered the store when he saw the bored looking ghoul behind the counter. She instantly cheered up upon seeing Andrew. “well hello. Im Tulip. Welcome to my store.” The ghoul greeted Andrew. She placed her hands upon the wooden top of the counter. “Hey Tulip. I need to resupply for a long journey. Any suggestions?” Andrew asked. “of course,” she said as she handed them their menu, “if any of the armor fails to protect your life, I shall give you a full refund.” Tulip said. Andrew couldn’t help but laugh at the joke as he perused her wares. Tulip had a lot of good items, but he didn’t want his pack to weigh more than the 300 pounds he could carry. “Well for starters I could use some combat armor to replace these leathers. Gimme the .44 magnum too, all the ammo for it too…I need all your 10mm and 5.56mm ammo too. Gimme all your stimpacks…and gimme some grenades too. Not really my forte, but theyre good in a clinch.” Andrew said before handing the menu back to her. She smiled as she piled the requested items upon the counter. She was gonna get paid tonight. Andrew handed her the sum of 1500 caps and thanked Tulip again before walking back out to the hall. ‘what to do?’ Andrew asked himself as he surveyed the old museum. He suddenly remembered the promise he had made to Gob what seemed like so long ago. He turned to a random ghoul citizen. “where is Carol?” Andrew asked. The ghoul stared at him as if he were an alien, although Andrew knew he basically was to these people. A passing drunk overheard the question and stuck his hand out to Andrew who tentatively shook it. “Carol’s place is just up the stairs right next to the 7th Circle bar.” The drunk slurred. “thank you” Andrew said, managing a smile. “so hey, have you seen my ear? Or maybe one ‘a my fingers?” the drunk ghoul slurred. “what? No way.” Andrew said, disgusted as he mounted the stairway without looking back. Andrew finally reached his newest destination, Carol’s Place. He opened the door and stood before the counter. Carol was busy looking at a paper resting on the counter. “yeah what do you want?” Carol rasped before looking up. Her eyes went wide as she noticed this one was human and not the usual assholes that normally graced her presence. “Oh my, I am very sorry. You must think me terribly rude. Please forgive me. Welcome to Carol‘s Place what can I do for you?” Carol said genuinely. “its alright. Im sure you get antsy. Do you know a man named Gob?” Andrew asked. Carol’s eyes lit up and her mouth fell open. “hes my son. How is he doing?” Carol asked, hopeful. Andrew gave her a grin. “He is doing well, Carol. He owns a bar in Megaton and he is getting ready to marry a beautiful, wonderful girl.” Andrew said. “Thank…thank you. I knew he would do well for himself.” Carol said as a tear left her eye. “it was no problem.” Andrew said. “I would rather like to meet this girl, but there is a small chance of that happening. Tell me, whats she like?” Carol asked. “Her name is Gem. Shes blonde with blue eyes and is very pretty. Very vibrant and perky. Kind of a tomboy at times. And looks up to me a lot.” Andrew said, thinking fondly of his newfound ‘daughter’. “thank you stranger.” Carol said. “Andrew.” he said with another grin. Carol nodded her head. “Thank you Andrew. She sounds really very sweet.” Carol said. “She really is. Good evening Carol.” Andrew said with a nod of his head. He heard Carol weeping happily as he turned the knob of the door and left. ----------------------------- Gem felt her anger growing at the smug look of Amata. Gem had just told her of her connection to Andrew Ross, and now the black haired latina was nearly laughing at her. “whats so funny?” Gem asked, feeling her temper darken. “nothing. Just cant understand why Andrew would take a liking to…you.” Amata said, her smirk planted on her face. “I told you already, were not that way. And besides, why would you care? You know, you really hurt him a lot. Psst, best friends my right ass cheek.” Gem said, her voice rising for the first time. “you weren’t there Gem. You could never understand. I was made the new vault overseer. There were still many of the vault dwellers who still blamed him for everything that happened.” Amata explained, turning away from Gem and looking out over the wasteland that she had been virgin to until now. “there is never only one way to do things. He wanted nothing more to be with you. He came back and helped you out with your problems and you just booted him out the door. That was not nice.” Gem said, her voice going back to an even octave. “down in the vault I need to care for the many against the wants of the few. I loved Andrew, sure. But its not like we were married or anything.” Amata said nonchalantly. Gem wanted to choke this woman. “so it just doesn’t matter to you then?” Gem asked, again crossing her arms. “No. it really doesn’t. whats done is done and nobody will ever welcome him back with open arms. Not even me.” Amata said the final part with bitterness. “If it was me I would have shot you.” Gem grumbled, her face turned down but her blue eyes staring at Amata. “of course you would have. that’s all you wasteland savages know. Vengeance, death, destruction. It really looks bad on you, ya know?” said Amata bitterly, turning to face her accuser. Her eyes were angry once again. “Savages, huh? At least we take care of our own loved ones out here.” Gem shot back at Amata. “Hmph. Until they die. And then you only take care of their burials.” Amata said with a smirk. Gem clenched her small hands into fists. “how dare you? You wouldn’t last a day out here. We are tougher than your soft little vault hands could ever know.” Gem said through clenched teeth. “everyone dies out here sometime. Ive heard the stories. Youre a bunch of savages heading for a premature grave. Nothing more.” Amata spat. “and if Andrew is at home out here, then hes better off dead to me.” With that Gem threw a solid punch at Amata’s face, catching her off guard. Amata reeled back from the blow and touched her bleeding lip. “don’t you insult Andrew. That man is like a father to me. He took me in and rescued me from a slaver. What could you know of his personality. You never truly knew him at all, fucking bitch!” Gem said, her clenched fists out before her in a fighting stance.” “Wasteland violence huh? Color me surprised.” Amata said flatly. “Youre nobody to judge us. And you are especially nobody to judge Andrew Ross. That man has done more good for us than you could possibly imagine. Fuck you and fuck your vault.” Gem said coldly before turning to leave. It was now Amata’s turn to strike Gem, her punch landing in the back of her head. “typical vault cowardice, huh? Color me surprised.” Gem mocked with a sneer before lunging at the vault overseer. The fight grew hotter with every thrust of female fists at womanly faces. Amata hit Gem in the gut and as she doubled over, brought a leather clad knee up, but Gem blocked the knee shot attempt and pushed Amata away, only to surge forward and land a square punch to the jaw. Gem ducked a swipe from Amata’s fingernails and picked the older girl up and slammed her on the hard ground before straddling Amata’s chest and raining down punches on her face as she tried in vain to cover up her features. @ @ “Andrew…Ross…loved you! This…beating is…for him!” Gem yelled as she rained down rights and lefts into the suddenly defenseless woman’s face. Amata’s nose was broken and bleeding and both eyes would be bruised as well. Her lip was split open and bleeding profusely as well by the time Gem was done with her assault on Amata’s beautiful face. Gem stood, breathing heavily, placing her arms on her shapely hips as she glared down at the fallen overseer. “wasteland justice, fucking vault bitch. don’t let me ever catch you around Megaton or ill fucking end you.” Gem threatened to the sobbing quivering mass of humanity. With a final middle finger Gem left the shuddering mass and made her way back to her home in Megaton. ------------------------------- Andrew left Carol’s Place and decided to get some quick needle work done on his torn skin. He noticed the doctor’s office and made his way toward, eventually opening the doors and stepping inside. The place was small and was crowded with hospital beds. Through a long reinforced window he noticed several green glowing feral ghouls moving this way and that within. At the end of the rectangular room stood a tall ghoul with a white lab coat on and his assistant typing away on a computer terminal. Against the far wall closest to the terminal lay a beautiful red haired woman devoid of all clothes except her gray undergarments. “hello outsider. Welcome to the chop shop. Im doctor barrows.” the doctor said, approaching Andrew. “what, youre not going to tell me how rare it is to see a wastelander in here?” Andrew asked, surprised. “no I will not. I do not share the distrust of humans that my brethren do.” the doctor said. “that’s a relief. Well I need some patching up.” Andrew said. “that’s good. Say, you wouldn’t want to donate some of your…samples to me in the name of science would you?” Doctor Barrows asked hopefully. “umm no, I would rather keep my samples, thank you.” Andrew said incredulously. “are you sure. I am researching the possibility of reversing the ghoul disease. If its successful we ghouls could turn human again.” Barrows said. “touch me with anything more than a needle and stitches and I yell zombie.” Andrew said, leveling his voice. “alright fine, hold still.” Doctor Barrows said retrieving his standard painkillers and needle and stitches. After disinfecting the area and applying the pain killers, the doctor got to work stitching up the laceration that proved to be two inches long on his right pectoral. “who‘s the woman?” Andrew asked as Barrows worked his magic. “Her name is Reilly. Shes the leader of a merc group who apparently got themselves into a lot of trouble.” Barrows said as he cut the thread after the final thread was cut. The nurse handed him a bandage and some gauze. Andrew lifted his arms as his fresh stitches were wrapped in gauze. “really, why don’t you wake her for me?” Andrew suggested, looking at Doctor Barrows with a concerned look in his eyes. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
