Link paced back and forth across the wooden floor in his home, glancing warily at the cow that left piles of manure at the base of his bed and eyed him lazily. In the washbasin sat Navi, crying silently.
Link knelt on his single bed, now too small for his grown body, and peered at himself in the mirror. He pulled his cap off and set it on the bed, then ran his hands through his thick, dark-blonde hair. It was lush and soft. He treasured his appearance so much that he had woken from occasional nightmares, sweating and shaking, where he imagined his hair had turned pink. Pink hair was not nearly as disturbing as the fact that his once blue eyes now shimmered a deep, bloody red. He turned his face away from the mirror, closing his eyes and frowning. The new Link looked bloodthirsty and deadly. “We need to have a talk,” he said, turning back to look at himself in the mirror. He expected it to answer him from the mirror, but it didn’t. “Did you hear me? I said we need to talk!” Link was disappointed to get no answer, and he felt a panic rise in his chest, telling him he was going insane. “Whatever…” he sighed, turning around and sitting on his bed, leaning against the wall. “Why don’t you go and possess that stupid cow over there?” “Come now,” he answered, “aren’t you enjoying yourself? Look at the women who adore you. Doesn’t that make you feel good about yourself?” “I just feel like hitting things. I feel violated.” Link said. This unexplainable rage kept building up in him, and he wanted to vent it out, but he felt like nothing would improve his mood for very long. “By all means, go and kill something!” Link turned around and looked at his face in the mirror. “You could cut up that eyesore of a cow,” he saw his mouth say, as if it was him speaking, “I hear they make a great meal.” “I could never do that to Malon’s cow,” Link said, turning away and eyeing the open door gloomily. “Malon… I wonder how she’s doing.” Her name lifted his spirits for a moment, and he ended the conversation. Navi sniffled in the washbasin, and Link glanced in her direction. “We should go visit Malon, don’t you think?” Link stood up and looked at Navi, who remained quiet. “I’m not talking to myself. I’m talking to you, fairy.” Navi’s glowing body peered over the brim of the basin and she looked at Link. “What’s wrong with you anyway? Say, I’ve always wondered what you look like under all that… glow. Won’t you show me?” “Is this all you think about?” she said in a brooding voice. “You just want to sleep with everyone now, is that it?” Link laughed cynically. “Not everyone! I’ve just… discovered a thirst for information! For instance, I always wondered what Hyrule Castle looked like on the inside, and up in the spring of Zora’s domain, there’s a hole high on the valley wall that I want to get into. And what do you think about Sheik? Isn’t he mysterious? And there’s something funny about that well in Kakariko Village, and I want to get to the bottom of it!” As he spoke, Navi saw his eyes sparkle just a tiny bit, but they looked heavy and weary. Navi sighed hopelessly. She knew her eyes held no sparkle. “And Navi, I’ve always wanted to know what you look like under there! Are you like a little human? Do you even have a body at all? You’re not naked, are you?” “When I was sent to you,” she said, calculating her words, “I was told that the fate of the forest and Hyrule depended on me.” “I thought Hyrule depended on me,” Link said. “Oh, you self-centered ass! What I’m trying to say is that I had a purpose when I came to you. I’ve never told you, but other fairies mocked me. They said I shouldn’t join a non-Kokiri, but I was given an important job, so I didn’t care what they said about it.” Navi flew to the center of the room and hovered in front of Link’s face. “You see, I’m tainted now, in their eyes I mean. I’ve sacrificed a lot to be with you, but now you’re not focusing on awakening the sages. You only think about your sexual needs, and, and…” Navi started sobbing and Link stood stiff, watching the fairy, unsure how to respond. “Oh, Link, we’re not getting anywhere! There’s no point in me being here anymore!” “Are you being serious with me?” Navi sniffled and turned a dark pale color, all of the sparkle fading from her light. “Link, I don’t want to be with you. I don’t know who you are. I feel like I’m letting down the Deku Tree, failing my task, but I can’t stop you from straying from your destiny. I am just a tiny fairy!” “Navi…” Link didn’t know what to think. Some part of him screamed that he couldn’t let her leave him. As much as he thought he hated her, he was used to her. The idea of being alone, with himself, made him uncomfortable, and he shifted his weight uneasily. “Navi, don’t leave me alone, not like this. I can’t control what I do right now. You have to understand.” She flew back from him a few paces and floated by the door. “I think you are stronger than this! I think you’re giving into it, because you just don’t care… When you’re ready to continue your mission, let me know. Until then, I guess I’ll have to do it myself!” With that, she hmph’d and flew out into the village, leaving Link with the stinky cow and his rotting inner self. Link sat on the bed again, his mood twice as nasty as before. “You’re so useless and annoying, I’m glad to be rid of you anyway!” he called after the door, but Navi was gone. “Are you glad?” he asked himself, and then he thought about it, his spirit sagging. “I don’t know.” The day faded and all outside became dim, and Link tried to focus on tidying up his home. He found himself frequently sinking to the bed and pulling at his hair in frustration and confusion. He needed a friend, a reliable friend. As he shoveled the last of the cow dung out and dropped it from his balcony, he had the urge to break down again. He went inside and sat at his small table, burying his hand in his face. “Why am I so miserable…” he groaned. He felt little control over his emotions and actions. He always felt a lack of control, as if some force constantly drove him to a destination. Now it seemed that the anonymous divine force abandoned him and a new force possessed him. Shadow Link took his power, but it some ways, Shadow Link empowered him. Was that possible, Link thought. Link had control of his voice, at least it seemed he did, and when he felt an impulse, he freely acted on it. What Link wanted to know was whether acting on impulse was a sign of his free will or his utter lack of it. Was free will a thing of imagination? “I need a break,” he said aloud. “I need a vacation to… discover myself.” “How charming…” “And then I need to continue awakening the sages. You can’t stop me from that, Shadow Link!” A chilly laugh came out of his chest and Link gripped the table-edge for support. “You silly boy, always jumping to the worst conclusions. Did I ever say I meant to stop you from rescuing your precious Hyrule?” Link thought about it, and stared into the air before him without expression. “You think I am all evil! Everything that is bad under the goddesses’ eyes has materialized into me!” Shadow Link laughed. “Well perhaps you are right, but perhaps not. What is evil anyway, do you know? Is it shadow like me, or naughty thoughts? Is it doing what is most natural, or is it willfully going against nature? Perhaps it is doing horrible things to people, and finding it amusing… I bet the goddesses really hate that!” “I’ve never been an expert on these things,” Link said. “You just go with the flow, don’t you? Well, you are going with my flow now. Whether I am turning you evil or not is for you to decide. I don’t really care what revelations happen upon you.” “How can I get away from you?” Link cried, banging his fist on the table. A small bowl teetering and twirling about from the impact distracted him. “What is wrong with being with me? Do I make your brains hurt? You ought to be used to it by now. That fairy made my brains beg to explode, and my brains are very superior to yours.” Link stood up suddenly, kicking his chair out of the way. “Quit antagonizing me, will you?” he shouted, throwing his arms up. He started to walk away from himself, but Shadow Link taunted him by laughing. A small idea flashed through his mind, and Link feared that Shadow Link would read it. “You are trying to keep something from me? Ha ha ha! It is so useless, don’t you see? I am here to thwart your plans, because it is funny to me!” “I want to keep everything from you, you parasite.” He began gearing up in a spare green tunic, his face turning red as he futilely attempted to conceal his thoughts. Shadow Link chuckled, but Link ignored it and packed things up. “Oh, my suspicious little Link. Our bond is beneficial to both of us, so by definition I am no parasite.” Link spoke nothing of his own will as Shadow Link continued to pester him. “You know, some people might find it odd that you never sleep. Can’t you sleep for just one night, right here in your own bed? Or do you have somewhere more important to be?” Link made eye contact only with his belt that he assembled. “What’s your secret anyway? Fairy dust? A magical charm? Something strange in the milk? It’s just not right, never sleeping. Not to mention your mental problem; you know people will talk about that. You’ve got it hard!” Packed up, Link stepped out on the porch and played a song on his blue ocarina. Link and his personality disorder were caught up in the abyss. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
