Epilogue: The Way the Hunt Ends
The thin veil of snow continued to cover the winter city. Even after several days in this winter dreamland the three Italian women struggled to acclimatise to the freezing temperatures, clutching their heavy cloaks tightly to themselves in an effort to conceal their quivering faces without drawing undue attention.“Citizens of Muscovy” the voice of a nearby Herald carried above the bustle of the crowd. “Count Raum has been arrested by the city guard accused of the murder of Duchess Natalya Blithe of the western province. The book of Matthew decrees an ‘Eye for an eye’ and the disgraced Count shall pay in full retribution” the crowd erupted in a round of murmured applause. “Also, city officials have passed new regulations regarding tradesmen providing their services within the city limits…”
“It looks as though the rumours are true Duchess” Velia spoke to her companion. “You’ve met a rather untimely end”
“You shouldn’t believe everything the Heralds tell you” Alessia replied. “Aside from the politicians they are always the most easily bought”
“I still don’t understand why we’re here” Fina interrupted.
“What is it now?” Velia begrudgingly asked.
“All the other initiates are tasked with eliminating Templar leaders, ambushing weapon shipments and training militia groups” Fina recounted. “We just attended a party, stole some papers and got a guy thrown in jail”
Alessia was quick to silence the dissent. “It is not our place to question the will of Master-”
“Excuse me”
The three women turned to be met by a young man in a rough brown shirt and pants. “I have a letter for you” the man reached into the pack at his belt, drawing out a letter written on rough paper.
“You’ve got the wrong people” Velia replied.
“It’s from the Master” the young man held out the letter for one of them to accept.
Alessia accepted the letter; turning it over in her hands she noticed the familiar insignia on the wax seal. “Where did this come-” Alessia looked up only to find the man had already disappeared, likely blending seamlessly into the crowd around them.
Alessia broke the seal, the three women gathered to read the letter together. To the uninitiated the letter appeared to be little more than a jumble of randomly assorted characters and images. To those who had been trained in the Assassins catalogue of ciphers the seemingly nonsensical combination peeled away to reveal the true nature of the message.
Apprentices Alessia Saba, Velia Zacria and Fina Tabani,
You have performed well in your first assignment together. I am sure you have questions in the wake of your task; rest assured that there are answers.
It was moments such as this that made the three of them begin to think that Master Auditore truly had some form of arcane mind reading ability.
You each knew that your objective was to infiltrate the Russian city of Moscow and secure intelligence relating to Templar activities within the city.
You learnt of their plans to unite the city and its territories within the boundaries of a single nation akin to the grand empires of history. What you did not know is that members of the Assassins Order were already present within the city before your arrival. For the past several weeks our operatives have been undermining the Templar position within the city through ambushes, propaganda and strategic assassinations. Your work ensured that our enemies’ presence could not be re-established. We are all part of a larger existence, each of us part of a greater whole.
As long as the Templars have wealth, they have influence. By disgracing Count Raum you have removed the financial support the Count had been working to secure from the lesser nobles of the city, money to be used to stage a coup to control the city in the Templar name. The work you have done has halted the Templar advance and spared the city from total destruction. You may never be rewarded for this, nor will any of the citizens know of how thin a razors edge they walk. But take heed, your deeds will be remembered in the chronicles of the Assassins Order for your loyalty and skill. Never forget, nothing is true everything is permitted.
