[Author’s Note: Alternate take on the “last chapter” of this story. I kept thinking about some of the point reviewers made, so I decided to revisit this. I’d still argue the original is the “real ending”, but I’ll leave this for you to decide. Starts during the first quarter or so of that chapter]
....
He avoided the question. “Does your husband know what you did to earn this money?” She frowned at the change of topic. “No. I’m almost certain he would not approve, but there was no other solution, so I had to hide it from him.”
This answer seemed to please him, as he leaned back in his chair with a smile pulling at his lips. “Let me tell what’s going to happen Miss Malon. I’m going to come by your ranch tonight and you’ll treat me to dinner, then I’m going to fuck you in front of your husband.”
Blood rushed to her face, and her mouth opened in shock and anger. “I..What makes you think I will go along with something like that? I may have been a whore, but I’m not a slave that will bend over at your command.”
Cato shrugged, seemingly unaffected by her outburst. “It would appear as though your choices are default, bankruptcy and homeless, or whoring yourself out for the good...or perhaps not so good citizens of Castle Town for half a year. Or one last night on your knees, working off your debts. It’s your choice, but I think we both know there’s only one real option.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I think you’re right sir, but not the option you think. I love my husband, and there’s more than one way to make money.” She indignantly stood up and turned towards the door. Cato seemed surprised at her reaction. “Are you sure about this Malon? One night to fix all your debts isn’t a bad deal.” She reached for the doorknob. “No amount of money is worth ruining my marriage. Good day Mr. Ramsay.”
She walked out of the building with her head held high, but as she saddled up on Epona, her mind filled with doubt. She was so sure their ordeal was over...but now it seemed they still had a long way to go. Rider and horse trotted along the familiar path back to the ranch Malon quietly reflecting on her interaction with Cato. He had actually expected her to agree. What kind of person did he think she was? Some kind of cheap harlot? An agreeable whore?
Images of dozens of men flashed in her mind. She hung her head. Maybe he wasn’t too far off. She had thought that she had been doing the right thing, keeping her side job a secret from Link. But was she really? Was sneaking out and fucking strangers behind his back really that much better than doing it in front of him? They reached the entrance to the ranch before she had come up with an answer.
Epona meandered over to the stables without suggestion, pausing long enough for Malon to swing her leg back over the horse’s back and hop back to the ground. She gave her beloved horse a gentle pat on her flank as she walked away. Link was waiting for her by the door. She never thought she would say it, but she really didn’t feel like talking to him; there was too much on her mind.
He wore an expression of concern and confusion, and he reached out to gently grab her shoulder. “You left so early, I didn’t give you the money you needed for the loan.” Malon forced a small smile. “I handled it. We...we should be ok.” It wasn’t a lie...it just wasn’t the complete truth.
Link’s eyes narrowed in confusion further. “Where did you come up with that much money that quickly? You didn’t sell them any of the ranch or the animals did you?” She shook her head. “No, I...wait, how much money were you going to give me to take to them?”
Link shrugged. “All of it.” He reached behind him and revealed a large leather pouch that was so full it was almost bursting. Her eyes widened. “Wha...how...where did you get all that money?” Link gave a half smile, tilting his head to the side like it was no big deal. “I called in a few favors. Zelda, Ruto and Nabooru all owed me, and they probably still do.” His expression grew more serious. “But to the point, what did you pay them with?”
She couldn’t tear her eyes away from the wallet in his hands. It was so simple. It was more than they had ever needed. All her work, all those nights...she had thought she had no choice. Tears welled in her eyes as the consequences of everything she had done for the last month rushed to her mind at once. On her knees, bent over, choking, swallowing, being shared, being hit, being underpaid. It had all been unnecessary. All she had needed to do was communicate. To talk to the man she loved.
Oh god, what have I done?
“Malon, what’s wrong.” She tried to choke back the tears. “Malon please talk to me.” The dam broke, and she began sobbing. Her legs betrayed her and she would have fallen to the ground, but Link caught her in his strong arms, and leaned down, cradling her. “It’s ok, it’s ok.” He repeated, soothingly. His attempts at calming her only made her breakdown worse. “No” she thought, “it’s not.”
After minutes of almost mindless sobbing, she forced herself to coherency. She took in breath harshly, her chest rising and falling quickly. The makeup she had put on that morning was smeared on her cheeks. But she wasn’t crying anymore. Finally, Link broke the silence. “Tell me what’s wrong Malon. Is it about the bank? What happened?”
She wanted to cry again. To breakdown and try to pretend that everything was ok. But she owed it to him to stay strong. At least long enough to tell him the truth. She took a breath. “I paid him what we owed.”
There was a silence as her words sunk in. Link was obviously confused, but was forcing himself to stay calm. “Ok...what money did you use?” She looked anywhere but at him. “Mine.” He took a few seconds to respond. “And where did you get that kind of money?”
The tears threatened her eyes, but she forced them away. She wanted her voice to be strong, to reflect the woman he married, but it was soft and weak. “I...I had sex with men for money in Castle Town” she squeaked.
His embrace of her stiffened, and she frantically clutched at his arms, trying to make sure he wouldn’t leave. Time slowed for her, as her mind flooded with too many thoughts. She picture him leaving her, spitting on her, hitting her, calling her a whore, or worse: staying and letting the shame and loathing fester and grow. But he did none of those things. He simply said in an even voice, “Tell me everything.”
And she did. It hurt, and she had to fight back tears, but she did.
By the end, their embrace had stopped, and she had assumed a sitting position on the ground, him sitting a yard away. Neither said anything, Malon terrified of scaring him away forever by making it worse, and Link too deep in thought.
Finally, Link broke the silence. “Those guys, at the house. It sounded like you didn’t think that was an entirely unpleasant experience.” Malon didn’t break her gaze with the floor. “Did you enjoy it?” She bit her lip. What benefit was it to lie to him now? “Not at first. But by the end, I did.”
There was more silence. She had waited long enough. Her voice reflected her exhaustion and weakness. “So what happens now?”
Link shook his head. “I don’t know.” She gathered the strength to look at him finally, and saw the face of a man who was lost. “I don’t know Malon.”
She didn’t have a better answer.

Malon heard the trademark gait of the mailman as he run up to the ranch, placed some papers in the box attached to the first building, and quickly turned back the way he came. Such a strange man.
She sighed, deciding there was no good reason not to see what came in the post, and walked out of the barn, over to the mailbox. As always, there were several letters of affection from girls around the country for her husband. She was used to them by now, but this time they caused an abnormal pain of guilt and sadness as she glanced over them. Normally she would show them to him teasingly, but he had left 2 days ago to “clear his head” as he called it. She could only assume he was out exploring caves and getting in trouble.
All because of her. She didn’t know when he would come back, or even if he would come back. She wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t. He often mentioned some place called Termina with affection. Maybe he could run away to there, find some nice girl to start a life with. Someone who wouldn’t break his trust. But in her heart, she knew Link, and he was going to come back. Eventually. What their relationship would be like when he did, she could not say.
A letter addressed to her caught her eye. She opened it up with curiosity.
Lady of the Ranch,
We would like to respectfully invite you to another evening with our kind gentlemen. Similar compensation to last time would, of course, be provided. We miss seeing you in Castle Town. Please come visit any time. Sincerely, Jal and the boys. She chuckled to herself. Luckily, she had no need of their money anymore. Walking back into the house, she threw the letter down on the table carelessly before grabbing a piece of bread and taking a large bite. While she had ended up enjoying their time together (to her shame), there was no debt needing to be paid, and their promise of money held no sway over her.
