Had a reviewer suggest it might be entertaining to see Ganondorf defending Zelda's honor. Somehow this happened when I sat down to write that.
Two years after the war, a rather unexpected messenger arrived from the south of Hyrule. Holodrum had apparently been destabilized enough by the crushing defeat of their armies to trigger a coup by the weaving guild, of all things. The token amount of the Royal Guard remaining had been remarkably ineffectual against nearly a hundred very angry women armed with heavy bolts of cloth and pieces of old looms. Tired of the loss of most of their husbands and sons to a war that was widely seen as a greedy power grasp where a relatively peaceful settlement was in the works, they had decided a change was in order.
They hadn’t been able to completely overthrow the whole ruling class, of course, but a council specifically made of craftsmen and farmers had been established and now held equal power with the house of lords. A no-nonsense Aunt of the previous king had been placed in power. At 60 years old, she showed no signs of slowing down, and had the experience and blood respect to force the lords in line with the new changes. Apparently, she’d decided that the best way to rebuild her nearly halved population, workforce, and industry was to reach out to Hyrule with a peace treaty.
Her delegation was made up of two nobles and two craftsmen, each bearing letters explaining their station in the Council and House, as well as the new Regent’s proposal. The moment Link realized what the strange group was here for, he sent for Zelda and Ganondorf using one of the few magics he’d ever be able to learn properly. He still couldn’t contact anyone except the other two Triforce holders, but the simple communication spell let him add a few actual words to the gut feelings they could send each other instinctually.
“Holodrum, really?” was Ganondorf’s response as he returned three days later. He and Zelda been working on improving the roads through the desert. His raw power and her affinity for water magics meant they were able to drill proper wells, tapping down and actually lifting the aquifers higher. In the short term it meant there would be a safer, more stable way through the desert as well as safe wells to build permanent communities around. In the long term, Zelda and Ordona suspected that the higher water tables meant that richer greenery would eventually grow, at least in patches, throughout the desert.
Link shrugged. “That’s what they said, and the heraldry checks out. I had your historian check their papers. Apparently their new Regent wants to be friends now.”
“Suing for peace? Demanding their people back?” Zelda asked for clarification.
“Nope. The last line literally says she hopes we’ll be able to become friends.”
There was silence, then Ganondorf barked a laugh. “I like this woman. Let us hope her underlings are as honest and straightforward.”

With all three Hylian regents back in the capital, negotiations could continue. The craftsmen half of the delegation were a weaver and a cook, both of whom had husbands who had surrendered to Hyrule. One of the first orders of business had been to track them down, of course, and thanks to Zelda’s careful records, one of them arrived that afternoon, the other a day later as he’d needed to come all the way from the southern shores of Lake Hylia. This had assuaged most of the tense feelings, as the delegates had of course been worried about the health and wellness of their fellows. “I was hoping to come and bring you to Hyrule in another couple of years,” the fisher said shyly to his cook wife. “We could open up a little inn on the shores, it’s really beautiful. There’s a few people who weren’t the most welcoming, but I’ve never actually been afraid for my safety or anything.”
“Me either, or any of the other Holodrum folk I’ve been talking too,” the second man had put in. “We’ve got a curfew of course, and we’re not allowed to buy or hold any land yet, but we’ve actually been treated pretty good. The only one of my squad I know died was a fellow who got trampled by a carthorse a few months ago. And the owner of the horse actually came to talk to us, seeing if we knew his family and leaving a letter of apology and repayment for it.”
“Everyone who lives in Hyrule is important to us,” Zelda said firmly. “Whether they are serf, citizen, traveller, Goron, Gerudo, or anything else. Everyone here is a person and deserves dignity and care. While we do not believe our demand of five years of service is unfair to any of the Holodrum serfs for the war crimes, we would be willing to alter the original terms.”
“Those with families will be allowed to return home for the period of one month after travel times,” Ganondorf continued. “And their service will be extended one month to ensure all debts are paid. Of course, with an open treaty between our countries, your own citizens will be free to visit or settle in Hyrule if our own laws are upheld.”
Link was hardly an experienced diplomat, but even he was surprised at how smoothly things went. Somehow, it actually appeared that both parties wanted the same basic thing and were even mostly in agreement on how to get there. By the end of the week, Zelda and Link were planning a trip to Holodrum to finalize the official treaty.
Everything was going great up until the Holodrum Lord decided the fact that Zelda wasn’t officially married was an open invitation.
“...you’re so young and lovely! You need a consort who will treat you with the deference and care that you deserve.”
“And I told you I’m not in the market for a consort!” was Zelda’s not-quite-snapped reply.
“But fair Lady Zelda, I’m positive I could make you happy! And I would be a respectable match, my bloodlines can be traced back twelve generations of Lords-” He was cut off by a terribly undignified squeak, and Zelda was suddenly looking up at him, rather than at eye level.
“I would like you to consider your next words carefully,” Ganondorf said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he effortlessly held the man a foot off the ground. “Not only are you disrespecting my Queen, but my Hero, and myself. Our bloodlines can be traced back to gods, you foolish child, as if that mattered to whom Zelda choses to share her bed. All that does matter is that my Queen turned you down with more decorum than you deserve. In my culture, a man such as yourself would have had his manhood removed for daring to speak to a woman in such a way.”
Another terrified squeak was uttered, and he flinched and nearly collapsed to the ground when Ganondorf set him on the ground in front of Zelda. Ganondorf bent to whisper in his ear, saying, “And Zelda is more than capable of exacting revenge upon you for the insults you have dealt. She is simply more polite than I am.”
“Thank you Ganondorf,” Zelda said, both amused and exasperated. “Now, as we were making such excellent progress, I think nobody else ever needs to know what transpired in this back hallway, hmm? We have a long trip ahead of us, and I’d hate to spend it in awkward silence.”
She had never seen a nobleman so pathetically eager to agree to anything. She wasn’t truly upset with him, he was young, foolish, and had generations of training to think he was superior to all. It was helpful to have Ganondorf around. He could make a point so eloquently.
