**Author's Note** First of all let me say hello to my reader Monklord! Thank you for your review! Yes this is an active story that I am continuing. I love this game and I am having a lot of fun in expanding the tale.
Now as for this chapter there will be a lot of combat. There isn't a lot here that I feel like sexualizing but there will be some plot and I'll try to throw in sarcastic humor where I can.
An Adventure’s Untold Tales
Chapter 5 - Battle and Sorrows
The kids from Grandseal marveled at the vast expanse of green before them. “It's… a forest!” Bowie said as there seemed to be almost nothing but trees ahead.
“Ugh, that's going to make movement go sluggish if we are attacked by monsters.” Sarah complained, knowing that she couldn't run as fast as some of the boys.
“It does look like there are some open areas scattered around. Maybe we can stick to those as much as possible?” Chester suggested trying to be helpful.
Then Jaha chiming in, sounding angry at Kazin. “Hey! You said that Hawel lives just outside of town, not completely through the woods!”
But the mage waved off his statement saying, “Come on everyone, it isn't that far. He only lives an hour’s walk away. We'll be there before dark.” He declared in his cocky attitude even though the others seemed unconvinced. It didn't inspire confidence when he followed up with, “But you should ready your weapons because there are monsters in this forest and it sounds like they are coming.”
The group nodded as in the distance they saw a slime slide out of the trees. “I'll take point!” Chester said in the defense of the others. The he charged forward throwing his spear for the first strike. Other creatures could also be heard in the distance through the trees.
“We do this together!” Bowie called, running up and finishing off the slime with his short sword. “We stay close, no one rushes ahead and no one falls behind!” However just after the slime fell a rat came running around from behind the trees. “Aaah!” He shouted as it bit into him.
“Hey what happened to not running ahead?!” Jaha yelled as his short legs could not carry him as far as they had rushed yet.
Furthermore Sarah was right on his heels in the same predicament. “Staying together means staying where your healer can reach you!” She shouted while trying to catch up.
“Don't worry, it's just a scratch.” Bowie called as he attacked the rat back but he could see another slime approaching fast. “Chester look out ahead!”
The centaur nodded and stepped around the rat to be in place to take the next attack from the slime. “Don't worry, I'll hold it back!” And then drive his short spear on to kill the rat.
Bowie could tell that they had developed a good pattern for dealing with rats and slimes. “I'm not hurt too bad but Sarah would be here to heal me in a moment.” He thought to himself. “Then we can travel at Jaha’s pace to keep him up with us.” However, not all proceeded to go as the inexperienced leader was planning. Without warning a large monstrous bat came soaring over the treeline and descended upon Jaha. There was no time for the dwarf to react as the bat sunk its fangs down into him. Instantly Jaha collapsed to the ground and was no longer moving. “Jaha, no!” Bowie yelled frightfully.
Being the closest Sarah checked him over, “It's okay, he is hardly hurt. He has just been rendered unconscious. He's sleeping!”
Chester yelled back in shock, “What? Seriously? He picks now to take a nap?!”
Sarah moved to distance herself from the creature as she snapped back at the centaur. “He isn't taking a nap! He was knocked out by the bite!”
“Oh.” Chester said as he watched the Priest healing Bowie's damage from earlier. The two boys were able to finish off the slime before it could move again. However despite this Jaha remained snoring away on the grassy field.
Bowie stretched feeling a bit stronger than before as he watched the bat continue to attack Jaha. “So, what do we do about that?” He asked having never seen a monster like this before.
Sarah looked like she would have kicked Bowie if he had still be standing next to her. “We save him of course!” Then she rushed over to heal her sleeping friend.
It was just then that he started to stir. “Huh? What's going on?” He asked groggily. He tried looking around but was in no state to help with combat yet.
Not hesitating like Bowie had, Chester ran a bit closer and tossed his spear toward the bat. Seeing the blow strike deeply he cheered as he felt himself get a little stronger. “Let's keep at it!”
“You can do it boys!” Sarah cheered, stepping back from the fight and standing near Bowie.
But then Jaha looked over actually seeing the bat himself for the first time. “Gah! WHAT IN THE NAME OF…?!” And then proceeded slam his short axe into the bat until it was dead. When he was finished he looked up seeing his friends giggling at him a little from being so startled. But after waving it off, he noticed something when he looked down at the bat. “Hey what's this? Guys look! This monster was carrying a Medical Herb!” He shouted before picking it up and pocketing the item.
Sarah sighed kind of annoyed. “Uh, so that means monsters can be carrying items now? The things we have to fight are going to keep getting worse than rats and slimes, aren't they?”
“Maybe, but not yet Sarah!” Chester called out, alerting the group that there was one of each hiding through the trees beyond.
Bowie spoke up next saying, “Alright, no more surprises. Everyone move along qotu Jaha and we might take them both down all at once.”
“I'm coming, I'm coming!” The dwarf shouted as they made their way across plans and through trees.
Jaha noticed that as the monsters were approaching that Bowie and Chester took up a defensive position around Sarah. However with just the two of them they hadn't anticipated the rat’s mobility through the forest as it snuck around their far side and bit the Priest right in her ribs. “Aaahh!” She screamed in pain as blood ran down her side. Instantly though she began clutching at her robe to make sure it was not pulled at.
“Don't worry Sarah!” Jaha yelled cleaving a chunk out of the rat. She in turn nodded but stepped further away to heal herself. She then looked a little drained though and knew she was now out of magic. The remaining slime approached from the north but now the boys were ready. Chester finished off the rat while Bowie made a preemptive strike on the slime. After that it only took Jaha a step over to kill that monster as well, making him also feel a little stronger afterwards.
“Huh, it seems that you kids are rather capable adventurers.” Kazin suddenly spoke up, still talking with his usual tone. “You are sloppy and uncoordinated but effective.”
Bowie ignored the comment as Sarah grit her teeth agitatedly, “And I didn't see you lifting a finger to help when one of our friends had been incapacitated.”
Eventually then came across a large single building built against the mountain wall beyond the forest. Kazin stepped up beside Bowie informing him that they had arrived. Stepping up to the door he called out. “Sir Hawel! Grandseal friends are here!” However when no answer came from the door there was an ominous pause. “Strange… There's no answer. Has he gone somewhere? Well, why don't we wait for him inside?” However as soon as they stepped inside, all panic ensued. There were two armored figures in long coats standing inside. Not recognizing them Kazin nervously asked, “Wh...who are you? Oh, Sir Hawel!” He gasped, seeing someone behind the strangers. Bowie stepped forward now being able to see what the commotion was.
These were armed soldiers with their weapons drawn and they were standing over the fallen body of an old man. “Oops! You came back early.” One of them said, having expected the monsters to take the lone mage longer to get passed.
Now Kazin looked furious as he stepped forward yelling, “You! What did you do to Sir Hawel?!” They looked to each other and scattered out through a back door. Kazin immediate set to give chase but stepped over his robes. He fell to the ground, helplessly watching as the men made their escape.
Hearing the ruckass though was enough to stir the old man and he looked seeing his pupil. “Ohhh… Kazin….” He whispered weakly.
Instantly the mage stood up and said, “Sir… you're alive!”
“...It's no use running after them…” Hawel continued. He could see his blood spilling across the floor but knew it was more important to share his information than to be concerned about his mortality.
Not yet understanding the gravity of the situation Kazin knelt down at Hawel's side. “Are you ok, sir? Why did they do such a cruel thing?”
“They were Galam soldiers. They demanded my notes on Ground Seal. They suddenly snatched them, and…” However be began coughing from his deep stab wounds. Hearing mention of the Ground Seal, Bowie stepped over to inform Kazin of what recently happened at their home. Hearing the whispering Hawel forced out, “Who… is… it? What… did he… say?”
Kazin spoke softly telling him, “He's Bowie from Grandseal. He said that Ground Seal has opened. A serious disaster took place! He came to see you for more information.”
Suddenly the old scholar became very upset, lifting himself to look up despite how wounded he was. “What?! The door opened? Who broke the ancient seal?!”
Kazin spoke quickly with concern, “Calm down, sir. Why are you so excited?”
Hawel's coughing worsened as his bleeding continued but still he pressed on. “...Kazin, listen to me carefully. Grans Island is lost! That tower is the sacred seal that confines a terrible devil. Two jewels... (cough) … were… installed to…”
Now Kazin yelled out, trying to deny to himself what he already knew was about to happen. “Stop talking, or you'll die.”
“I'm almost dead anyway…” Hawel said, having already accepted his fate. “Kazin, look for the jewels… to seal… ancient…” But the old scholar could hold on no more.
Upon seeing him fall limp, Kazin grabbed Hawel around the shoulders and shouted. “Sir! Sir Hawel! Don't leave me alone!” But seeing the far off look in his unmoving eyes Kazin was forced to realize the truth. “Oh, no…!” He began to sob, mourning the loss of the old man who gave his young life so much meaning. “Sir Hawel has passed away.” He said to Bowie grimly. “I'm going to seal the tower. It's Sir Hawel's last wish.” Now the mage turned to the leader of the group. “Bowie, please! His wish is related to your mission, right? Can you go with me to seal the tower?”
(Kazin the Mage has joined the Force)
“Now, let's go to the Ancient Shrine!” Kazin cheered while returning to his usual self.
But that wasn't quite the end to the conversation as Sarah yelled out, “You hold on for a minute! If you want to be a part of this group then that means Bowie makes the decisions. Well Bowie, what would you like to do?” She asked her blond friend.
He nodded to her and looked around the room. “Well we do need to return to Grandseal, that is for sure. Let's start there and then decide what happens next later on. For now I think it would be best for us to search for supplies. I do not mean to disrespect the dead but Sir Hawel isn't going to need any of his things anymore. Kazin, is there anything here we can use?” He asked as the Mage looked around.
Kazin thought for a moment and then pointed around a small corner. “Sir Hawel did have a few medical supplies tucked away in the side room over there.” He realized Bowie was right and that they might need all the help they could get if they needed to reseal away a devil.
After collecting an Antidote and a Healing Drop they all made their way outside. Jaha spoke up first while looking around. “You guys, it is getting pretty late. It is going to be dark soon. Maybe we should stay here for the evening?” He offered.
But Sarah was quick to counter his suggestion. “Oh no! I don't mean to be offensive but I am not sleeping in a house where a grown man was just murdered in!” When she put it like that all of the other boys nodded and no one disagreed with her. “Maybe we can rent a room once we get back to Yeel? We will just need to be quick about it.” After that they made their way back into the wooded area outside of Hawel property.
However as soon as they were back out in the treeline they noticed several others who seemed to be guarding the north entrance to Yeel. “Who are they?” Kazin asked. Looking south they saw several soldiers, an archer and a knight. “Galam soldiers!” He shouted, sounding eager to get some revenge.
“Greetings, Grandseal scum!” Called the knight from Galam.
Bowie and his friends now became a little nervous. “Scum? Does that old man not realize he is talking to a group of kids?” Chester asked.
Not being intimidated though Kazin stepped forward asking, “Why did you kill Sir Hawel? How could you be so mean?”
Strangely though, the Galam Knight seemed to falter. “Ummm….”
“Answer me!” Kazin shouted enraged. “Bowie, we must defeat them so we can learn the truth!” He yelled before charging into battle.
“Hey what the… I didn't say that we wanted to attack them!” Bowie called out angrily.
Upon seeing them advance the Galam knight turned to an archer saying, “Capture then alive.” Then he departed back into the town.
Rolling his eyes Chester looked to Bowie for confirmation before chasing after Kazin. “Alright, let's do this I guess.” He took a defending position beside the mage.
Bowie stepped forward as well saying, “Can we really fight them? Killing monsters is one thing but I don't want to get stabbed by a sword or shot with arrows.”
Next Jaha stepped forward and now Kazin was protectively circled. “Don't worry, that's why Sarah will have out backs!”
“You know it!” She cheered, stepping up to their backs to stay as close by then as possible.
However they all gasped in surprise as a bat zoomed forward over the trees from out of nowhere. “Ahh, not again!” Jaha called as it hit at him. This time however he managed to avoid getting knocked out. “Why isn't this thing attacking them?”
Sarah called out from the back, “You nitwit! If you ever showed up for class you'd know that some military groups employ monsters into their fighting ranks!” Just then though her voice got higher calling out, “Chester look out!”
That was right when the forward Galam soldier charged and attacked the centaur in their front ranks. “E’ngh, fending off a blade hurts a lot more than rat teeth. But don't worry Sarah, I'm fine.” Sarah looked concerned but nodded, deciding to wait before using one of her healing spells.
Bowie now yelled, “Kazin, it's time to see what you can do! Lend some support against that bat to start with!”
The mage nodded before raising his staff and shouting, “Blaze!” A ball of fire appeared and looked to burn the bat for considerable damage.
“Hey, not bad. Maybe he is good for something.” Sarah jested.
Bowie looked to his other friends though, knowing that now Sarah and Kazin would need protecting. “Chester, stay in a defending position and we will finish this soldier together with Jaha!” Chester nodded, moving to cover Jaha’s flank. He then threw his short spear into the Galam Soldier. Bowie struck next doing a good blow but he was still standing. He knew in a moment Jaha would finish the soldier off but the blond boy couldn't help noticing another two opponents from Galam were sneaking up on them.
“HAHA! The first victory goes to us!” Jaha called.
“This battle isn't over yet.” Bowie said as he pointed out a knight and an archer closing in from their exposed side. “We’re about to be surrounded.” He said as another soldier came out of the trees from the south.
Just then the bat lunged once more at Jaha but he quickly evaded. “I want all the bats to stop attacking me!” He shouted.
Bowie was quick to respond saying, “Kazin, finish that bat off! We're going to need your support in a moment!” They watched as the mage burnt the flier to a crisp but now their leader had a decision to make. “Chester, let's take them first come first serve. Focus on each one at a time!” He knew the enemy archer would be a problem but to send Chester to attack him that would be putting his friend in between three opponents alone. And Sarah would not be able to reach him in a hurry.
“You got it!” Chester said, hurling his spear at the soldier who was closest.
Suddenly though the archer made an unexpected move. He ran passed the soldier to the treeline and shot an arrow at Bowie who had not even been hurt yet. “Errg!” He was able to withstand the blow but now the damage was getting spread around the party. “Sarah, heal whoever is attacked next! As for the rest of you, hold the line to not let them through to Sarah or Kazin!” He raised his sword striking back at the archer to try and hold him off.
Just then he was glad to see Jaha run up. Now Bowie's side was covered and the Dwarf struck against the soldier bringing him closer to death. “Yeah! Let's do this!” He yelled, feeling stronger.
But just after Jaha attacked he saw his opponent step back. The soldier looped right around the Archer and drove his awe into Bowie's side. “Urk! That, really hurts!”
Then things began to look grim as the southern soldier made a rush for Jaha. “Dont worry about me, I'll hold this guy off. You focus on the rest!” He said, defending like a human shield.
Sarah began to panic a bit. “There's too many of them. I can't heal you all at once!” But then she noticed just how bloody the soldier who attacked Bowie was. He was barely standing. “AAAARGH!” Sarah yelled, slamming into one of his wounds. The small push seemed to be enough to make the soldier fall though, eliminating one of their attackers on the field. As Sarah felt a little stronger after that she smiled to Bowie, “Remember, I can fight too!”
“Don't worry, we are not lost!” Kazin said, rushing over and burning the archer quite bit from over Bowie's shoulder. Chester then threw his weapon into the soldier attacking Jaha to remain in his defensive position. Bowie managed to strike at the archer and Jaha continued to hold off the soldier.
However the tide of this battle continued to turn. Things were looking up until the archer pulled away sinking another arrow into Bowie. He gasped almost fallen and to their dismay a second bat suddenly snuck passed their defences and landed a large blow against Kazin. They all watched Kazin fell unconscious just as the bats had done to Jaha previously. Furthermore there was a third bat approaching the overwhelmed group. Seeing an opportunity Chester threw his short spear passed the solder and into the archer killing him. Then he flexed feeling his strength increase. Jaha managed to slay soldier before him but just as quickly the final bat took the soldier's place and knocked Jaha unconscious beside the mage who remained sleeping.
Sarah rushed over, healing the wounds Bowie had before one of the sneaky bats could pick him off. “Bowie!” She shouted nervously. Chester was surrounded and the other two were asleep. There were two bats still and now they saw another archer closing in. “What are we going to do?!” Chester looked around not knowing which bat to attack. He struck at the one by Kazin but could only hurt it. He couldn't kill it outright.
Looking around Bowie suddenly wrapped his arm around Sarah. “Hold onto me.” He said. Then he raised his hand shouting, “Egress!” After a moment they were all pulled from their locations back to inside of Sir Hawel's hut. “Is everyone okay?” He asked as the group began to wake and recover from their wounds.
“Uh Bowie, you can let go of me now.” Sarah said heavily blushing.
Jaha looked around seeing they had retreated and sighed, “Aw man, we botched it didn't we?”
“It's true, we were on the verge of being defeated.” Kazin said. But then he was shocked as there was a loud sound and the side of his face suddenly burned.
Looking up he saw that Sarah was standing in front of him and had just slapped him. “And who's fault is that?! Huh?! Who told you to rush in and attack? Did Bowie give that order? No! Didn't I tell you that you need to follow instead of lead if you wanted to travel with us?! You got all my friends hurt! We might have been able to talk our way out of that! Their leader seemed guilty for what his soldiers had done if you hadn't noticed!”
But then she calmed down as Bowie put a hand on her shoulder. “Well there is no chance of that now. We killed several of their soldiers. Our only chance is to get back out there and fight our way through. I'm sure they are regrouping right now just as we are.”
“Then let's not waste any more time.” Chester suggested. “We almost had them, if it weren't for those bats.”
But now Bowie smiled. “Yeah, I was thinking about those. They aren't hampered by the forest because they can fly right over the trees. So how about we use their mobility against them? We fish them out and then take them down quickly so they aren't knocking us out while we fight the soldiers?” The rest of the group nodded and no one had any objections as Bowie. led them back out the door. As soon as they were outside they saw that the enemies had replenished themselves as well. But Bowie raised his hand to stop the others. “Stay here, let them come to us. Sarah, take a few steps forward to draw the bat. We won't need healing right away and you shouldn't have to fear just being attacked once.”
She nodded trusting her leader and stepped forward while the others waited. Bowie watched as several of soldiers proceeded forward but sure enough the first bat lunged against Sarah. She took a good bit of damage but wasn't knocked out. “Now!” Bowie shouted for them to advance. He hadn't expected the forward guard to be so quick as Sarah suddenly received a second attack. But she was able to step away to heal herself meaning she had been a successful decoy.
On Bowie's command Chester ran forward throwing his short spear at the bat. Immediately after Kazin was able to burn the creature away. After doing so he flexed feeling stronger and said, “The magic within me grows. I will soon show you what I can really do!” Bowie nodded and ran up to strike the soldier who had attacked Sarah. In doing so he also felt stronger afterwards.
Jaha was then able to follow up right after Bowie, killing the soldier before he could attack further. “This is working!” Jaha then flexed as well.
Bowie was quick to reevaluate the situation though. “This is where things got tough last time! Sarah, decoy the bat approaching from the south! Everyone else, here come an archer and another soldier!”
However seeing that the soldier and archer were adjacent together Kazin stepped closer and raised his staff towards them both. “Blaze 2!” Instantly a storm of fire appeared in the sky and rained down upon them. The soldier was engulfed, screaming as he was killed outright and the archer was greatly injured. Bowie and his friends were amazed.
Chester looked to the archer but hesitated because he was pretty far out. But Bowie nodded saying, “Go for it!” Then the centaur raced off and threw his short spear, killing the archer before he had even finished fanning the flames from his clothing. Seeing the archer die without ever getting off an attack Bowie smiled but decided to remain cautious. “Everyone fall back on Sarah!” He shouted as he moved in behind her and Jaha was right behind him. Sarah took another massive hit but again was able to step back and heal herself. Meanwhile another soldier was approaching but he was still too far off to attack. Chester threw the first attack to the bat followed by Kazin killing the creature with a smaller first spell.
After this Jaha jumped ahead. “Trust me, Sarah.” He called as he intercepted the approaching solder. As Jaha was attacked, he was able to deflect the blow taking almost no damage at all. Sarah nodded and looked around realizing that no one was hurt. Seeing as her entire group was about to descend on the soldier anyway she felt brave enough to run up and smack a hit in of her own. The damage was minimal however she felt stronger as the realization for a new anti poisoning spell just hit her. A blow later from Chester and Bowie was all it took to defeat the opponent. Now looking ahead they saw they had a definitely advantage on the field. “I am not going to get knocked out!” Jaha said as he jumped forward to brace himself for an attack from the third and final bat. He deflected the blow with just a scratch.
From just over his shoulders Chester threw his weapon and Kazin through a fireball which vanquished the creature. However Kazin then knelt down looking exhausted as he said, “I'm sorry my friends but I can only keep that up for so long.”
Bowie smiled and said, “You did great. Fall back and leave the rest to us!” Then he watched as only an archer was left to defeat. He approached but couldn't get into range to attack. This left an opening for both Jaha and Chester though. The dwarf ran up doing massive damage with his axe as Sarah attended to healing the minor scratches in the group. Already assuming the fight was over, Chester missed what should have been the killing blow and that left an opportunity for the archer to shoot him back. Jaha attacked the archer again but couldn't quite finish the wounded archer off.
Sarah rushed over and whispering jnto Chester's ear, “You big dummy.” Then she used her final healing spell on him. Right after, Bowie managed to strike the archer down winning the fight for them.
Much to their surprise, a second complement of soldiers emerged from Yeel and a familiar voice called out. “Your battle strategy was wonderful! I praise you.” Chester and Sarah jumped in fright seeing the commanding knight from Galam return. “But, I cannot let you escape.” Instantly he rushed the battlefield toward Bowie. He struck with technique like the blond boy had never seen before and was immediately struck down with a single blow. “That lad is their leader. Take him!” A soldier and an archer reached down to pick Bowie up. Turning towards the others he said, “Don't worry. He is only fainted.” Turning his back to them now he yelled, “Take them to Galam!” And so they were captured, taken as prisoners by the Galam force.
**Author's Ending Note** So it is totally understandable that Kavin would want revenge for Hawel but I had always noticed that it was he who actually started the combat after Hawel died? Who knows what could have happened otherwise. I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I know it was combat heavy but there will be more variation in the next chapter. Please let me know what you think as I continue through the story!
