"So do we have ta wait till we get our Trainer Licenses to do the whole Poké Ball thing?" Dante asks once Professor Oak finishes making his call to a technician for repairs to the laboratory's wiring.
"Yes, unfortunately. Only officially recognized Trainers are allowed to catch and own Pokémon," the Professor explains patiently as he takes Pikachu's Poké Ball from Vergil. "Were you able to get an answer to your question?"
"No. Pikachu fainted when Arceus was brought up," Vergil answers blandly, making the Professor frown slightly and examine the Poké Ball. "He didn't seem to appreciate being caught."
"Interesting," the Professor muses as he pockets the Poké Ball again. "Well, the License exam is due to start soon and there is something I need to see to before it so you boys can go on ahead. It will be held where the training session was given."
"Mmkay," Dante all but chirps as he comes to stand at Vergil's side. He gives a grin as he looks at Vergil, his tail swishing and briefly colliding with Vergil's. "Race ya there?"
Vergil contemplates the idea for a moment, making it seem like he'll say no, and true to form Dante starts to pout. He knows just how effective it is on Vergil—which is to say that it has a one hundred percent rate of effectiveness—and for extra measure, he even bats his eyes at Vergil. Vergil almost wants to laugh because he wasn't even going to say no from the start but he settles for smirking instead. "Well, if you want to race that badly then I suppose we'll have a race."
Dante's expression shifts to one of suspicion instead of the expected glee and his tail lashes slightly. "You were gonna say yes anyway weren't you?" That almost sounds accusatory.
"Maybe." Vergil turns and leads the way out of the laboratory, knowing that Dante will follow. He does, his energy predictably spiking slightly with his irritation towards Vergil but Vergil knows it won't last.
"Yer an ass," Dante grumbles as he keeps pace with Vergil.
"You should know by now that I won't say no to you, little brother," Vergil returns amusedly, sparing him a brief sidelong glance. "Don't look so sullen."
"I'm not sullen." Oh, he certainly is. Dante's wings are drooping and his tail is all but dragging on the ground.
"You look the very definition of sullen, Dante." Vergil comes to a stop and turns to face him, lifting his hand to curl his fingers just under Dante's chin. "Come now, my beloved, surely you can't be this upset because I tricked you into thinking I would say no."
Pale pink splashes across Dante's cheeks at that and his gaze skitters away from Vergil's almost immediately. He had been caught off guard by Vergil's trickery if this is any indication and Vergil's mouth curves into a smirk. "Ass," Dante huffs at him and pulls away from Vergil's touch. He skips back a step, eyes narrowing into a glare, and then with a twitch of his tail, he takes off down the road.
Vergil chuckles to himself, his own tail flicking, and then he gives chase after Dante. He catches up easily despite Dante's slight head start but then he's always been built for speed while Dante's always been more of a powerhouse. This leads to Dante aiming a small ball of fire at his feet, which prompts Vergil to roll his eyes as he leaps over it. If this how Dante wants to do it then two can play this game, and Vergil lets his electricity crackle across his body before he aims a bolt just ahead of Dante.
"Damnit, Verge!" Dante cries out as he nearly trips over himself in an attempt to avoid the electrical attack.
"You started it, brother dearest," Vergil calls out to him over his shoulder, not bothering to stop for even a second. He reaches the building first, naturally, where a few of the other Trainer hopefuls have gathered. Gary is among them, and he glares Vergil's way for a second but quickly looks away when Vergil returns it with an impassive scowl, just in time for Dante to reach them too. "What have we learned, Dante?"
"That you have an unfair advantage," Dante gripes, referring to the electricity, and Vergil arches a brow at him. "Not to throw fireballs at my brother who is clearly the superior racer."
"You are simply more suited to tasks that require brute strength, brother dearest," Vergil states flatly and pretends to examine his class while he ignores the prying stares of the other trainer hopefuls.
"And you're more suited for speed," Dante grumbles as he kicks at a rock. "It's still not fair."
"You don't see me complaining about my lack of raw strength," Vergil says with a pointed look in Dante's direction. "Or should I make another go at claiming all of dad's power for myself again?"
"Don't you dare joke about that, Vergil," Dante growls out, his tail lashing.
"Then stop whining about what you lack and appreciate what you have, Dante," Vergil dryly states and Dante's shoulders slump as he sighs. "Now focus on the task at hand because I will not be sticking here for a year if you fail this exam."
"You wouldn't dare leave me behind!" Dante all but squawks out, and he looks as offended as he sounds. "Verge!"
"Then pass the exam, Dante, so I won't have to." It's unfair to manipulate Dante like this but Vergil needs him to focus on the exam ahead of them instead of whining about their differences. Not that Dante will fail it. He's too smart to fail something like this, even though they've literally just learned the material.
