Micardrin watched her closely as she cleaned up after the meal. Most of the food had been palatable, the strange fluffy yellow stuff had not been. That had paled in comparison to the drink she’d fixed for herself. Her drink had been far too sweet. He glanced at the strange mechanical device that she’d used to heat both their drinks. It was an intriguing piece of sorcery, as was the much larger device she’d used to cook on. Neither had produced any flames, yet they had heated the food and drink exceptionally well. He planned on discussing those devices as soon as he was able to sufficiently communicate with her.
Jenny glanced at him and then to her dog. Loki needed to go out. Standing up, she gripped the dog’s collar easily and guided him over to the back door. She didn’t dare look up at the dagger still wedged firmly in the door. Instead, she caught Micardrin’s gaze and held it while speaking lowly, and yet as firmly as she dared. “He needs to go outside.” She told the dark elf, gesturing between her dog and the door with her free hand. “Loki,” she placed her hand on top of the dog’s head, “needs to go outside.” She finished, moving that hand to the door handle.
Micardrin’s gaze slid from her to the dog, and back to her, it was clear he was hesitant to release the dog. Jenny sighed in exasperation. She was not going to have the dog make a mess in her house. “Loki, sit!” She commanded the dog, who immediately sat. Micardrin’s ears twitched slightly, noticing the change in her voice as she spoke to the animal. Heaving a sigh, more to drive her point home about being irritated than anything else, Jenny purposefully turned to the door and reached up toward the dagger. She half expected him to bolt from the chair and leap over to her and snatch her away.
Micardrin’s lips twisted into a small, amused grin. For several seconds he merely watched her as she attempted to pull the dagger free. After a few moments, he decided to allow the animal outside. Standing up, he crossed over to her silently. Just before he got too close, he purposely dragged his heel across her floor, alerting her to the fact that he’d gotten up and moved toward her. Predictably, she jumped a little before scooting out of his way. With practiced ease, he withdrew the blade from the door frame and twisted the handle the same way he’d seen her do the night before. The door swung open, and the dog bounded outside.
Turning to face her, he motioned to the door and spoke firmly. “This stays closed. Or I will lock it again.” Jenny stared at him, fully understanding his meaning if not the words. She gave a curt nod to indicate that she understood. She turned around and headed to the living room. Picking up the remote, she gestured to it and the TV. “Please don’t panic.” She muttered as she pressed the power button. The TV came to life, and she glanced at him. Micardrin watched the screen, enthralled with the various colors and script that appeared there. Intently focused on the magic displayed in front of him, he didn’t notice her small expression of relief.
She steeled herself and pressed a second button, this one would kick her streaming device into action and play the last show she’d been watching. The screen flickered and soon she could hear the theme music to her favorite show, a naval crime procedural, begin to play. Micardrin tensed, his hand instinctively gripping the dagger tightly, ready to attack. Jenny saw it and immediately hit the pause button. “No!” She cried out, stepping in front of him. “It won’t hurt you! They are not real!” Well, they were real, but they weren’t here. Desperate to get him to understand, she backed to her TV and, gently, gave it a quick tap. Micardrin’s eyes narrowed, the people trapped in the box didn’t react at all. What magic was this?! Could she trap him in a box?!
Glaring angrily at the box, he hissed out dangerously. “How have you entrapped them?!” When she didn’t answer, he turned his glare on her. It was clear from her expression that she didn’t understand him. But how could that be? She’d imprisoned her own kind inside of a strange, black box. “Release them!” He ordered emphatically. Jenny quickly pressed the fast forward button, skipping the intro scenes and jumping straight into the story and dialogue. The show began to play again, and she could tell from the dialogue that she’d gotten almost to the halfway point of the episode. Micardrin watched as the trapped people seemed to be going on with their lives, none the wiser to being caged inside a strange box.
Backing away slightly, Micardrin snorted lowly in disgusted confusion. Nothing made any sense. For several hours, he watched impatiently as she explained as best she could the many different elements of her world. It became clear to him as time passed that the box was similar to a window, or portal, except one could not pass through it. He’d been fascinated by the images of combat he’d seen from the strange window. He wondered if they had large scale wars, similar to those from his own realm.
Jenny sighed quietly. Although they had started on a bit of a sour note, he’d calmed considerably. Now, she needed to introduce him to games. She grabbed her laptop and then fiddled with the TV settings so that it would reflect the laptop screen. While setting up the display, she got a notification from her messenger app. A friend of hers had linked a video for her to watch. Opening the app, she hastily typed a reply, saying she’d watch it later, and then minimized the app. Micardrin watched all of this with rapt attention.
She chose a game and started it. She’d purposely chosen a game with boxy, pixelated, characters. Something she hoped he wouldn’t react negatively to. After a few minutes, she glanced at him and realized that he was quite bored. She changed games, choosing another that was not pixelated, but still fairly cartoonish. Before she could get too involved in the game, her cell phone rang. It was across the house, and she could tell by the ringtone that it was her boss from work. She couldn’t miss the call. With an apologetic glance to Micardrin, she got up and went for her phone.
While she was gone, Micardrin watched the screen on the laptop. He’d been alternating watching the screens and her hands. She used the strange oval looking device to move an arrow across the screen, pressing down on the left square at times. It looked far less complicated than the strange rectangular device with many squares and strange runic symbols. As he studied the strange contraptions, a brightly lit box suddenly appeared on the screen, accompanied by a cheerful chime. Using the oval device, he moved the arrow to the bright box and pressed down on the left square. Another box appeared and began to emit sound and showed strange figures.
Jenny heard the beginning chords to one of her favorite songs and walked back into her living room, confused. The sight that greeted her made her blood freeze in her veins. He’d somehow managed to open YouTube. And it was playing a game music video. Footage from several games flew across the screen in time to the music. Panicked, she rushed over to the laptop, intending on stopping the video but it was too late. Scenes from the cinematic trailer, of course it would be the one she hated to no end, played across the screen. There was no hope of passing it off as anything other than what it was. The brutal fight scene between the light elven female and the dark elven blade dancer flashed over the screen before fading away and being replaced by another game as the music continued.
As he turned to face her, Jenny wished that for once, the ground would open up and swallow her. She hung up on her boss, the dark elf in front of her was far more dangerous to her health at the moment.
