Chapter 4 – School Hard *Smut*
“That can’t possibly be right! No sorcery for a year? This is supposed to be the Heptagram, Reya! We’re supposed to be learning magic!” Udi, laments as she unpacks in her dorm room with Reya.
The girls’ room overlooks the steep cliffs of the Isle of Voices, the waves of the Inland Sea crashing menacingly below them. The girls are not, of course, supposed to be able to pick their roommate, but as it’s Udi’s aunt who arranges the living quarters for the first years, it was not exactly a surprise.
Reya sighs, “You just sat through the same orientation I did, Udi.” She points at the classes on their scheduler, “Martial arts, history, cosmology, mathematics, spirit lore, weapons training, crafts: we need to master these before we can learn magic.”
Udi jabs Reya between the ribs with a finger, “At least the history teacher is a hottie! You know, for a cripple.” She tosses her hair casually and Reya flushes bright red, “By. The. Dragons. Reya, are you hot for teacher?”
“N-no!” Reya stammers out, inwardly cursing her lack of composure as she stammers like Rowena.
Udi throws back her head and laughs, “Well he’s a Cynis, right? So, he’s probably into that…”
Reya growls and pounces on the other girl, who goes allows herself to fall back onto the bed giggling, as Reya straddles her, pinning her to the bed. Reya feels herself getting hot between her legs as she attacks her best friend.
Udi’s hands find Reya’s thighs, and she runs them along her pale, soft skin, sending shivers of anticipation through her body. Reya’s fingers work her way under Udi’s clothes, and she starts to strip her tormentor, who laughs breathlessly under her.
“Get off! I yield!” Udi chuckles.
“No,” Reya continues to strip the other girl, “You insulted my honour and I demand satisfaction!” She grins evilly and strips off her own shirt, baring her breasts. Reya feels the red flush on her face spread to her chest, embarrassed despite herself.
Udi licks her lips as her lover’s body betrays her bold actions, “Fine, I guess I deserved that.” Udi humps the air, feeling herself getting wet.
Reya pins Udi’s arms above her head, and lifts her skirt, shifting her underwear to one side as she settles down on her young lover’s face.
Udi runs her tongue over Reya’s sex, like an electric current surging through her, it causes the Mnemon girl to buck and writhe.
“You’re so beautiful. And so good at that.” Reya confesses as she grinds against her friend’s mouth, desperately wanting more.
Udi throws herself into her task with gusto, licking in a steady rhythm, building Reya closer and closer to orgasm. Her tight cunt squeezes and contracts, desperate and wanting. Reya shakes violently, thighs spasming and twitching, clutching around Udi’s face. The orgasm rips violently through her body, drawing out a throaty moan.
Reya slumps down on the bed, and the girls rearrange themselves, stripping out of their remaining clothes. Udi takes Reya’s hand and guides it between her legs. Reya grins at her and they kiss, Reya tasting herself on Udi’s lips and working her fingers inside her.
“You’re so beautiful,” Udi breathes, kissing Reya passionately as she spreads her legs.
Reya grins back manically, “Why haven’t we been doing this all our lives?” She trails kisses down Udi’s face and neck, as the Ledaal girl takes a fist-full of Reya’s hair and pushes her lower.
Still inexperienced, the young Mnemon girl twists awkwardly to work herself between Udi’s legs. Her Ledaal lover giggles at her clumsiness, and wriggles under her to help.
Reya kisses the inside of Udi’s legs, causing her to moan out, “By the Dragons, please lick me. I need you so much.”
Reya buries her tongue between Udi’s soft folds, flicking it in and out. Nibbling and teasing she works her way up to her clit, gently circling it with her tongue. Udi’s moans grow more urgent as Reya builds up a rhythm.
“That’s it! Just like that!” Udi encourages, twisting her hands in Reya’s hair as she arcs her back up. “I’m going to cum!” She cries out.
Udi explodes in Reya’s face, juices gushing out, drenching her. Reya drinks her down hungrily, taking her attention off her clit to lap between her lips, wanting every last drop. Udi trembles and tenses as her climax rocks her.
As Udi recovers, Reya snuggles up beside her and wraps her arms around her. Udi smiles in the afterglow. “When we met, we were too young to be doing this,” Udi loops back to Reya’s mid-sex question, “Then when we could have, I was at the Palace of the Tamed Storm.”
Reya wraps her arms around Udi and squeezes her from behind, “You’ve always been a bad-girl.” She places a kiss between Udi’s shoulder blades.
Udi shrugs her off and sits up, reaching for her clothes.
Reya pouts and sits up as well, kissing Udi’s nude back as she dresses. Udi giggles and pushes her away. Reya dresses and the two make their way to dinner.
****
Dinner is a communal affair. Two long tables, each large enough to seat a dozen comfortably, are set for all the students studying in the Hall of Terrestrial Puissance: there are ten older students who occupy one table, with the first years on the other. Food is arrayed around the dinning hall, in the style of a buffet, with all the courses available from the start of the meal. Human servants serve the food, that the students need not trouble themselves overmuch as they eat their fill.
Seeing frozen ice-cream, Udi decides to eat nothing but, bringing back a plateful of the stuff and nothing else. Reya rolls her eyes at her and sets a more balanced meal for herself. The students chat between mouthfuls, but being well travelled and in unfamiliar surroundings, the conversation does not begin in earnest until the plates are cleared away and the students are given formal time to get to know their classmates.
Rowena, reasoning that she’s learned everyone’s names on the yacht, and having unpacked with her new dormmate and listened to the conversation over dinner, has a good enough feel of them already, settles into a corner and pulls out her book.
Udi points the shy girl out to Reya with a nod of her head, “Shall we?” She asks mischievously, intent on tormenting the poor girl.
Reya instead sets her sights on the girl who seemed to know a lot about demons, “What about her?” She says, smiling evilly.
Udi makes a face, “Evede? I’d be worried about catching something!” She scans the room, “What about Little Miss Shadowland?” she says nodding at the raven-haired girl who’s skin is even paler than Reya’s, who is sulking in a corner, watching everyone with dispassionate eyes.
Reya nods at Darknife as they approach, “Quite the day so far? I believe I remember your name, but shall we go through the motions? I am-”
“Mnemon Alinos Danireya. First year. Exalted aged 12, Air Aspect, like your mother. Top of your class at the Pagoda of First Foundation. Older brothers include General Mnemon Alinos Ferad, the war hero. No sisters. Four generations removed from the Empress. Yes, I know,” Darknife makes a show of yawning, “You are very famous.”
Reya forces a tight smile, “Well, I wouldn’t say very. It was Darknife, right? I didn’t cause your House?”
Darknife smirks sarcastically, “We’re all House Heptagram now, aren’t we?” She says it with the derisive sneer that can only come from a member of one of the Great Houses.
Reya takes in the girl’s appearance carefully. There’s an unfamiliar scent about her – distinctly a plant smell – and her eyes are black, her lips red. Reya reasons she’s more likely to be a Wood Aspect than a gardener. It’s hard to guess any more information beyond that. She makes a show of gesturing to her attire – the uniform of the school.
“Of course, we are,” She says, “So, what do you think of our… fellow abecedarians?”
Darknife longs Reya over from head to toe, taking her in in a long slow look, then sizing up Udi, “I suppose there are a few of us with potential.” She says guardedly, stressing the ‘us’ and the ‘potential’.
Reya smiles in a showing of (metaphorical) fangs, “Indeed! Well, you seem to be ahead of me in getting acquainted with our peers,” She offers a slight bow, “Excuse us.” She says, turning to leave without waiting for a response.
“Just stay away from the Tepet girl,” Darknife says, her tone suddenly serious, “Stay away from her, and I think we’ll get along just fine.”
Reya makes a point of not turning to acknowledge that last comment as she casts her eyes around the room. Before she can settle onto who to talk to next, a trio of burly looking boys bump into her and Udi.
Udi spins on her heels, and sizes up the newcomers, “Look, Reya, your favourite: boys!”
Knowing Darknife is still in earshot, Reya wastes no time. “Let me see, large, obviously an Earth Aspect. ‘Kinesi’ was the name if memory serves. Very little fanfare at the Chanos docks, but you’re obviously a Dynast. Ragara would be too obvious: Sesus Kinesi, then?”
Kinesi snorts, “You’re too pretty to be another freak like that one,” He jerks his dead disrespectfully in the direction of Darknife, “She’s a Cynis, and with your grasp of demon lore, you have nothing to prove to the likes of her.”
Reya and Udi exchange a look: that would explain a thing or two. House Cynis is connected to Mnemon and Sesus by strong marriage ties, and it suddenly makes sense that Darknife knows who she is. She gives a slight curtsey:
“Danireya, this is Ludila.”
Kinesi bows, a touch deeper than etiquette demands, “Memory serves, I’m Kinesi, this is Padar and Riven.”
Reya turns her attention to Padar, “Padar I know.”
Kinesi slaps Padar in the chest, “You’ve been holding out on me!” He jokes, “Keeping such beautiful women to yourself!”
Padar scoffs and shakes his head, “It’s good to see you Reya,” he gives a nod of acknowledgement before responding to Kinesi, “She’s my cousin.”
Kinesi smiles, “She’s not my cousin.”
Udi runs a finger down Riven’s chest, “And I don’t believe we’re cousins either?” She smiles sweetly up at him.
Kinesi watches the display, practically drooling.
Riven smiles back at her, “By Daana’d I hope not!”
Udi giggles and presses herself closer to Riven.
Reya shrugs and the movement catches Kinesi’s attention, “I’m sorry about her: I can’t take her anywhere.”
Kinesi lets out a low whistle, “Well, why would you?”
Udi giggles and skips back to Reya’s side, and leans playfully on her shoulder.
Reya smiles playfully at Kinesi, “I’m glad to see that Padar has found such… good company. Any thoughts on our other classmates?”
Riven and Kinesi share a knowing look, Kinesi then turns to Padar and raises his eyebrows, Padar nods.
“Stay away from the Tepet’s: they’re worse than Darknife, stuck up and too proud of their bloodline,” He gestures toward Rowena in the corner, “What’s her deal?”
Reya raises an eyebrow, “Rowena? She’s a sweetie. Very… well read. Not too many interests outside of that.”
Udi smirks, “Why? Are you interested in her?” She makes a kissy face and bursts out giggling.
Kinesi makes a dismissive gesture, “Why would anyone be interested in that?” He frames Udi and Reya with his hands, “When there’s this?”
“Hmm,” Reya gives a slight wave and turns her sights on the next student.
Udi waves over her shoulder and mouths “Bye.” Before skipping after Reya, “They’re good kids, it’s going to be fun messing with them for next seven years.”
Reya smiles back at Udi, “Yes it will.” The next girl is heading towards Rowena. Reya watches her walk over, seething silently.
Udi bounces at her side, whispering under her breath, “Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!”
“You’re lucky I love you, dumbass,” Reya shakes her head, “Fine, go, kill.”
“Yay!” Udi stalks off after Rowena and her new friend, and Reya follows behind.
The other girl is chubby with dark skin and hair. The two seem to be talking animatedly to each other, smiling and giggling.
Udi leans over the girls, getting into their personal space, “Rowena, who is your delightfully… bubbly friend?” She pokes the chubby girl on the end of the nose.
The girl smiles at Udi, “I’m Ha-”
Udi lays a finger on her lips to shush her, “I’m asking my very good friend, Ro-ro, puppy.” She turns to Rowena with a devilish grin.
Rowena looks up uncertainly at Udi. She catches sight of Reya, casually sauntering over as she responds, “This is my d-dormmate, Harite.”
Reya arrives and lays a hand on Udi’s back, “Oh, dormmate! Then the two of you must be well acquainted already! Unpacking together, et cetera. You won’t mind if we borrow Rowena for a while, do you Hereta.” Reya extends a hand to Rowena to help her to her feet and shines her most winsome smile at her.
Rowena takes Reya’s hand and allows herself to be helped up before she knows what she’s doing. She smiles back at Reya dumbly.
Harite raises a finger, “It’s ‘Harite’ actually and…”
Reya, Udi, and Rowena are already walking away. Rowena throws Harite an apologetic look as Reya tightens her grip on her hand.
Reya speaks to Rowena in a hushed voice, “Listen, Ro, may I call you Ro? I realise we’re all scions of good breeding, academic achievers, the best and brightest of the Realms youth. But you need to decide whether you want friends like me, or friends like…” She gestures at the foreign student who is discretely trying to pick his nose. Reya wrinkles her face in obvious disgust.
Udi puts a hand on the small of Rowena’s back and pulls her in close, hip-to-hip, “You do want to be friends with us, right?”
Reya makes an exasperated face, “I mean, I thought with the ferry over here, we were already getting close. But if I misunderstood…” She shrugs.
“No, I want to be friends!” Rowena says hastily, “I don’t… find it easy to… make friends. I thought you d-didn’t like me, f-for taking your seats?”
Reya gives an easy laugh, “Oh that was just a bit of silliness.” She drops her voice, confidentially, “I don’t think any of us have an easy time making friends, you know. Sorcery is ‘the Solitary Art’ after all.”
Rowena nods, “Harite had a terrible time with her own family not-”
Reya’s smile falters for a moment, and Rowena promptly stops speaking about Harite. Together the three girls introduce themselves to the rest of their classmates before going to their first lesson.
****
“Welcome to ‘A Brief Introduction to the Glorious History of the Dragon-Blooded Shogunate of the Immaculate Dragons’.”
By the end of Cynis Ganan’s first sentence, Reya can instantly see who in the class is attracted to men and who isn’t. Udi is sitting to her right, practically asleep. Rowena is sitting to Reya’s left, with her head in her hands, and a dreamy, far-off smile on her face. Half the class is subtly pressing their legs together with wistful looks on their faces.
“-erroneously referred to as the ‘Realm Before’, the proper period for our study begins approximately-”
Ganan wears a doublet of green and gold, with matching trousers which leave little to the imagination. His skin shines as invulnerable bronze. If not for the crutch he leans on, he’d look ready for battle: tense and drilled. Every step the young instructor takes seems to cause him pain, so he stands stock-still, like an immovable pillar at the head of the class. If Ganan can read the mood of the room, he doesn’t show it. It doesn’t take Reya long to become convinced she’s the only one paying attention, as she works her quill taking copious notes.
After a couple of hours, the class is dismissed for free study. Udi yawns and stretches, blinking the sleep from her eyes, “Wait, read what?”
“Recap the account of Hesiesh receiving the gift of sorcery as told in the ‘Annales Gildas’, take a first reading of the ‘Art of Sorcery’, and memorize ‘The Doom of Emperors’ by Lady Sennaka. There’s going to be a test on that one tomorrow: Birth of the Shogunate.”
Udi lets out a loud groan and rolls her eyes, “A year of this Reya. A year.”
Reya shrugs, “The Art of Sorcery though. That sounds promising, right?”
Udi snorts, “Knowing our luck, it’ll literally be an art book.”
Reya turns to Rowena to find that she’s scurried off to be with Harite. Her face darkens.
****
Reya and Udi retire to the library. The Hall of Terrestrial Puissance might be the least of the Heptagram’s libraries, but that still puts it in the top ten for all the Realm – perhaps in all of Creation. The mighty tower is utter unnavigable for the new students, but it is well staffed with bound servants. A demon, like a hunch-backed mortal with the head of an oversized praying mantis greets them as they enter the library and directs them to a study area where they can find the books they need.
The Art of Sorcery may as well be an art book: page after page of obscure symbols, with no explanation or annotation, in a tome a shesep thick. Udi gets two pages in before she closes the book and rubs her eyes with a groan. She gives up and seeks out the Annales Gildas, knowing the story of Hesiesh is only a few pages long.
Reya studies the shifting symbols feeling as if the meaning is right there in front of her. It’s not written in High Realm, but the structure of the text makes Reya think that it’s some obscure dialect of Old Realm, rendered in a script that she does not recognise. She knows they’re not supposed to study sorcery until their second year, and puzzles over what secrets this tome might contain and why it was set for their first reading assignment.
Udi rises and offers Reya a copy of The Doom of Emperor’s, “This is the one the test is on, right?”
Reya nods and waves her off, already being familiar with the text.
After an hour or so, Rowena cautiously enters the library. The demon librarian directs her to the same study area.
Rowena smiles shyly, “Hi, I, uh, have my own copy of the Doom of Emperor’s, but I need the Annales. Please… if… you’re done… with it.”
Reya looks up from the Art of Sorcery, “I don’t know. Are we done with it, Udi?” She says, an edge of menace in her voice.
Udi holds a hand over the book and starts to drip water onto it. Just a few drips at first, rising to a steady trickle. Rowena lets out an involuntary squeak at the wanton damage to the school’s property.
Reya continues, “Now, of course, if the three of us were friends, you’d have come to the library to study with us after class. And you could have already read the Annales.”
“W-we are f-friends?” Rowena stammers weakly.
Reya smiles a sickly smile, “Oh good,” she says and casts a hand out toward the book. The water Udi had been dripping on it freezes suddenly, locking the book in a thick layer of ice and freezing it to the desk. “Then it’s all yours.”
Rowena tries but can’t pry the book up. She turns to leave but Reya grabs her tightly by the wrist and Udi blocks her path.
“Friends don’t run off without telling me where they’re going, understand?” Reya growls at Rowena.
Rowena nods, tears welling up behind her glasses, “P-p-please-”
Reya rolls her eyes and lets go of her wrist, “You can go!” She says exasperatedly.
Rowena runs off, ducking past Udi as she heads straight back to her room.
Udi cracks a smile, “Does she not know that there are other copies?” She says holding up a second copy of the Annales.
Reya moves the Art of Sorcery aside, revealing a third copy, “I guess not?”
The girls collapse in a fit of hysterics.
****
Refusing to give up until she’s finished the book, Reya is reading long after Udi has given a cursory re-reading of tale of Hesiesh and a flick through The Doom of Emperors and retired for the night. It’s well past midnight by the time Reya is ready to turn in.
The frozen copy of the Annales Gildas has thawed but is badly water-logged. Reya scoops up the book and seeks out the mantis-headed librarian.
She clears her throat gently, “Excuse me, but one of my classmates accidently damaged a book. Tempers ran high?” She smiles sweetly as the librarian turns to regard her with alien eyes, “I don’t suppose anything is to be done. But, well, she’s a Fire Aspect, you see and didn’t think anyone would trace water damage back to her, but my conscious won’t allow me to have it go unreported. I’ll take full responsibility for the damages – my family will pay for a replacement copy.”
The demonic librarian takes the book and addresses her in it’s disquietingly human sounding voice, “Thank you for your honesty, miss?”
Reya curtseys, “Danireya, first year.”
“Miss Danireya, but the damage is not too bad. I shall be able to repair it by morning.” The librarian studies her carefully, “I suppose you’ll not name the student to blame.”
Reya feigns a look of utter shock, “I really can’t! She left here barely holding back her tears, and it’s only her first day! I couldn’t possibly get her in trouble after a little accident like this – it wasn’t entirely her fault, she just lost control.” She stands straight and sticks out her chin, “No, if there’s any punishment to bear, I’ll bear it.”
The librarian cocks its head to one side, as it remembers Rowena leaving the library in floods of tears, “I don’t think that will be necessary. You had better go to bed, you have an early start tomorrow.”
Reya curtsey’s again, and takes her leave, smiling to herself.
