“You missed the evening meal.” Einao stated calmly, eyeing Starr with a careful regard as she barged into their quarters.
Not expecting him to be there, she startled and jumped a bit. Already on edge and anxious, Starr floundered for a second before speaking. “I was busy.”
“With what?” Einao further questioned.
“I asked Aelaru to give me something to do and got caught up in it.” She answered evasively.
Einao glared at her back. He already knew what she’d been doing. Aelaru himself had informed him when he’d returned from his daily patrol and had personally asked him to keep an eye on her. Why was she being so secretive about it? Had the dark elf done something?
Standing up, Einao followed her into their shared bedroom, watching as she gathered fresh clothing to sleep in. He realized that she wasn’t going to elaborate. “Commander Aelaru informed me of your request this morning and his decision to grant it.”
Starr turned around and stared at him. “You checked up on me?” She questioned, her tone accusatory.
“No. He came to me and informed me of this himself. He wanted me to know what was going on and he also wanted me to keep a close eye on you.” Crossing his arms over his chest, he leaned against the doorframe. “So, why are you keeping it a secret from me?”
Memories of what she’d done flooded her mind. With a small shake of her head, she pushed them aside, muttering. “I don’t know...”
Einao watched her struggle for a moment before crossing the room and enfolding her in a gentle hug. “Go get your bath and relax. I have a few rounds to make before my shift is officially done. Those scented bath salts that you like so much, well I bought some and put them in the jar next to the bath.” Kissing the top of her head, he left her to her privacy.
Starr counted her blessings as she made her way to the bathing chambers, finding the lightly scented salts right where he’d said they were. Taking a generous scoop, she sprinkled the salts throughout the warm water and settled in for a nice long soak. Their conversation replayed in her mind. She knew that the longer she let this go on without admitting to her mistake, the worse things would get. But she found herself unable to undo the mess she’d gotten herself in. Taking a deep breath, she dipped her head under the water.
Meanwhile, Einao meandered around the fortress. His patrol duties had actually ended hours earlier. However, it had seemed that Starr had needed time alone and he knew from prior experience that she wouldn’t fully relax with him there. One small little lie didn’t seem like a big deal if it afforded her time to relax.
During his leisurely stroll, his eyes landed on the brig.
Silently, he eyed the structure, noting the heavy presence of guards. Slowly, and then with more purpose, he began making his way toward the building. Who exactly was she trying to get information from? The level of skill needed to lurk around the fortress completely undetected and leave no trace behind was frankly worrisome. The fact that he’d already killed so many was even more troubling.
Waving the guards away, he entered the brig.
Shin’s ears twitched as he heard the locks on the door being disengaged. The heavy footfalls informed him that it wasn’t Starr that had come to pay him a visit. As the door swung open, he stared at the elven sentry that had nearly caught him.
Twice.
Pale blue eyes, short blonde hair, and leather armor met his gaze. He counted three concealed daggers along with the two strapped to the lighter elf’s thighs. The lighter elf didn’t look like much, but he was dangerously skilled at tracking, and seemed reasonably skilled with the daggers that he carried. Although Shin had managed to catch a glimpse of him throwing them, and he wasn’t impressed. The sentry had plenty of speed when it came to throwing, but his accuracy was unreliable.
This was in large part due to an injury to the lighter elf’s eyesight. Something Shin only discovered after closely observing the sentry for a solid day. The sentry hid it reasonably well from the rest of the fortress’ inhabitants, but then again, they weren’t looking for his weaknesses.
As Shin studied him, Einao studied Shin. Without his armor and weapons, the dark elf didn’t seem like much of a threat. And yet Einao knew that’s exactly what he was.
Einao could feel the residual traces of Starr’s magic and traced it back to several large wounds on the dark elf. Shards of ice were still embedded deeply in the wounds and melting slowly, the melt water mixing with the intruder’s blood and pooling beneath him. While he was impressed at her level of control over her magic, he was not happy that she was learning that control under these conditions.
Interrogating prisoners had a way of changing people if they weren’t careful. The subterfuge and mind games could be confusing, even for skilled interrogators. Which was something she wasn’t.
And he would never forget that the dark bastard in front of him had been caught attempting to ...
The thought made him angry, and he strode closer to the imprisoned elf and landed a backhanded blow to the jaw.
Shin slowly swung his gaze back toward the light elf and glared murderously at him. “You wish to die tonight?” He hissed, not phased by the blow.
Einao gripped the bloodied and dirty cotton tunic, bunching it tightly in his grip as he leaned closer. “I’m not like the others! I’m not as weak as them. You escaped me in the forest, you will not escape me here!” Getting right in the dark elf’s face, he growled angrily. “Give me another reason to kill you where you stand, filth!”
As Shin eyed him, curious as to what he’d done to this particular elf to warrant such a strong reaction, he caught a whiff of a very familiar scent. Starr’s enticing fragrance clung to the elf in front of him.
The sentry who’d nearly caught him and was now standing in front of him, was her lover.
A low laugh rumbled in Shin’s chest. The ‘other’ reason was the attempt on her ‘modesty’ that he’d concocted to cover for Starr’s little indiscretion with him. If only the dullard knew that it was she who’d initiated everything. As his laughter faded away, he issued his own snarled reply. “Take your offensive hand off me before I rip it off!” As he said this, he jerked his wrists forward, yanking the bolts that secured them to the wall partway loose.
Unflinching, Einao snatched his dagger from its sheath and reversed his grip so that the pommel would strike the target and drove first one and then the other bolt back into the wall. “Like you could do anything to me...”
Shin scoffed. “If you think I can’t touch you then why not let me loose?” Hissing mockingly at the other elf, he leaned his head in even closer. “Let’s find out...” If he got loose, the elf in front of him would die a painful death... In fact, he was filled with the sudden urge to kill this elf period. The ‘when’ didn’t matter. One way or another, this elf was going to die before he left the fortress for good with the treaty... and possibly Starr...
“Give her the answers she seeks, and I will make sure that your life will be ended swiftly.” Einao countered contemptuously.
“Oh, I will give her so much more than answers...” Shin replied immediately and without conscious thought as vivid memories filled his mind. The resulting punch to the nose only served to strengthen his sudden resolve to kill the elf in front of him.
“I’m warning you...!” Einao growled lowly, the impulse to simply kill the dark elf was nearly overpowering.
“Of what?!” Shin’s voice was low, but it held deadly undercurrents. His eyes drilled into the light elf.
The force of the dark elf’s gaze caused a small and involuntary shudder to go through Einao. He hated to admit it, but he feared the elf in front of him. Although he’d faced many dark elves before, and all had threatened him, none had ever managed to scare him. Until now.
Cursing colorfully, Einao turned and strode from the room.
Shin’s face twisted into an even fiercer scowl as he recognized the profane phrase Starr used earlier. Who had taught it to who? Either way, it didn’t matter. If he took her with him, that phrase would never be uttered again.
Leaning his head back, he rested it against the wall and waited. Morning was but a few hours away. A light flutter of wings alerted him to the barred ventilation opening. His raven had returned, and it was clutching something in it’s talons. The bird flew to him and landed on his shoulder, extending the foot that contained several defaced dark elven military insignia badges.
The badges belonged to disgraced dark elven soldiers.
Looking to the opening, he sighed in frustration. It seemed the fortress was being targeted by a roving band of delinquents. He eyed the bird again and it quickly flew into an upper corner of the room, landing on a support beam and hid itself away.
It seemed that he would be giving Starr a bit more information than he’d originally intended. It wouldn’t do to have the fortress attacked and taken by outside forces. At least not yet. He didn’t care about the fortress or it’s inhabitants. The disgraced soldiers could have it and those who lived in it for all he cared. But they couldn’t take it until after he’d gotten what he’d come for.
