Starr glared hotly at the assassin, wishing that she hadn’t dropped her bow when he’d lunged at her and activated the scroll’s magic. “Come near me and I will rip your eyes out…” She snarled, her fingers curling and uncurling in agitation.
Shin huffed exasperatedly. “We’ve already established that you cannot best me.”
Starr snorted inelegantly, but she couldn’t deny that he had a very valid point.
Observing her closely, Shin sensed her previous anger was beginning to falter and he pressed his luck by taking a small step toward her. “I don’t like this any more than you…”
“Why?” She questioned, interrupting him. “Why do you not like this?” Her tone became morose as she realized that there was most likely no going back to her home village. Even if her kind did drive off the orcs, it was clear that the dark elves had no intentions of leaving them be and would turn on them. They had merely waited until Asterios had foolishly asked them for assistance, and that was to be the downfall of her kind.
He blinked at her, genuinely confused. “Because, it’s not right. Light or dark, we are elves. We shouldn’t be destroying one another.” His temper was spiked again by her reply.
“To hell with your kind…”
“Your arrogance is truly astonishing.” He snarled out. “I’ve risked my life to save yours three times now. When we first found you in the forest facing that orc, I stepped between you and BaelAun.” He began pacing toward her. “Then I protected you in the tunnels, and then I protected you from one of the most dangerous casters in recent memory. And this is the thanks I get?”
Starr retreated as he advanced and it dawned on her that she may have pushed him too far. Dropping her gaze, she looked away from him. “Sorry.” She muttered sullenly. As much as she hated it, she knew that unless there was a miracle, this was likely going to be her new ‘home’ for the foreseeable future.
“As you should be.” He reponded quickly. “Follow me.” His voice was cold and clipped as he reined in his temper.

Several days later, Starr glared at the dark elven woman who was instructing her on how she should act when she and Shin were to be seen in public. The desire to scratch her eyes out was very nearly overpowering. Except, she’d already previously tried that a day ago and Nathavin’s retribution had been swift.
Shin hadn’t attempted to intervene on her behalf and had simply stood to the side, watching with an almost bored expression as the other elf blistered her ears with his rant. Apparently the woman teaching her was Nathavin’s younger sister, whom he was very protective of. Her ears were still ringing as if it’d just happened today.
Aleyel snapped her fingers in an attempt to regain Starr’s attention. “Pay attention, or this ruse will not work and you will be killed.” Like Shin, she didn’t like what was occurring, but she had no means to stop it. “We only have a few more days and then Shin must present you to Thiefiel, our leader.” She lied easily. That meeting was today. In mere hours. Shin had requested that no one inform Starr of that little detail, fearing she would act out and delay the meeting, making matters far worse.
Pursing her lips, Starr bit back a choice curse. Something else she’d learned over the past few days, never, curse in front of Shin. He’d made it perfectly clear that he wouldn’t tolerate it, even when in private.
“You’ve got the basics down, now we need to work on wardrobe.” Aleyel stated, her voice calm, hiding the glee she felt. She found this part of Star’s training to be quite humorous. She nodded to a servant who then opened the door.
A single dwarf entered the room, wheeling a rack of clothes with her. The dwarf glanced between the two and mentally cursed her luck. Light elves were quite modest. The clothing choices she’d been commissioned to make were anything but.
As the dwarf revealed the robes, Starr’s temper boiled over. “What. Are. Those?” She hissed.
“Those,” Aleyel began, “are your new clothes.”
“Those aren’t clothes!” Screeched Starr. “They’re rags! Small ones!”
Aleyel grinned. “Did you really think you would have your choice of clothing in public?” She tsk’ed and shook her head. “Shin has really coddled you after all.” Shaking her head, she wondered when Shin would put his foot down with the light elf. It was well known to several of Nathavin’s lieutenants that Shin was going out of his way to accommodate Starr. He’d even gone so far as to sleep in the barracks, leaving her the large quarters that Nathavin had given to both of them. Making the last few selections with the help of the dwarf, she finalized the order.
Hours later, Starr stood in front of a large and ornate mirror, face flaming with embarrassment. The ‘clothes’ were scandalous. There had been several outfits, but the one that Aleyel had insisted on was a deep scarlet and gold piece with black accents and boots to match. The one-piece outfit was primarily scarlet, with a crisscrossing gold pattern. Skin tight, it hugged her body, accentuating her breasts. The sleeves were off shoulder and tight around her upper arms, flaring out at the elbow, creating an admittedly beautiful appearance.
However, it had no leggings at all. It fit similarly to what humans referred to as a body suit. Leaving most of her ass hanging out and only barely covered the front of her nether’s. At first Starr was grateful when she saw the black silk that was supposed to cover her backside, but when it was attached, she was shocked to find that it only drew attention to her bare backside.
A matching red and black choker necklace was clasped at her throat. Again, she’d thought it rather fetching, if darker than her normal tastes. That was until the dwarf showed Aleyel the hidden buckle, through which something could be looped. The black high heeled boots were knee high, and the most ‘modest’ part of the entire outfit.
Starr fumed inwardly, her expression furious.
Aleyel grinned openly. She was having the time of her life. She’d always wondered what a light elf would look like in dark elven raiment. Now she had her answer. The light elves were quite stunning. Their fair skin contrasted nicely against the dark tones of the silks.
She snickered again. She and Nathavin had been betting on whether Shin found the light elf attractive or not. If he hadn’t before, he would now. She was sure of it.
A knock on the door drew everyone’s attention. Starr’s gaze snapped to the door in horror as she heard a male voice come from the other side of it.
“Aleyel. Is everyone ready?” Nathavin inquired, his hand on the doorknob.
“Yes. We’re ready.” Aleyel replied as she swiftly pulled Starr off the raised platform where she’d been standing so that the dwarf could properly adjust the clothing.
Nathavin twisted the doorknob and strode into the room. He took one look at Starr and then turned his gaze to his sister, one eyebrow arched in silent question. When Aleyel did nothing but beam happily at him, he repressed a sigh.
Returning his gaze to the light elf, he spoke. “Come along.”
“Where are we going?” Starr hissed as she tried to find some way to hide herself from his gaze, alternating between crossing her arms over her chest, and then lowering them to position her hands over the scrap of cloth that covered her nethers.
Before Nathavin could speak, Aleyel piped up. “Hands together, at your stomach!” Her voice was almost sing-song as she reminded Starr how she was to behave in public. “Head up, back straight…chest out.”
“Nathavin, would you do the honors?” Aleyel questioned in dark elvish. This part was something they’d argued over. Shin hadn’t wanted it done, but it needed to be. Nathavin had to inspect Starr the same way Thiefiell would in order to prevent her from messing up under Thiefiell’s inspection.
Schooling his expression into one of stern authority, Nathavin approached Starr while Aleyel informed her to be absolutely still and quiet.
Starr struggled to maintain her composure as Nathavin circled her, scrutinizing every aspect. He even leaned close and pulled her hair to the side to inspect the necklace. As soon as his hand ghosted over her shoulder, she tensed in preparation to strike him. “Don’t.” He intoned warningly. “That action will get you killed.” When she relaxed, he continued his inspection.
“I thought I said I didn’t want a mock inspection.” Shin muttered angrily from the doorway. As Nathavin backed away from Starr with apologies and explanations, Shin stalked into the room, his eyes fixed on her. As he passed Nathavin, he felt a strong desire to punch him. Something he’d not felt before. However, the sight of Nathavin standing so close to her, touching her when she clearly didn’t want to be touched, angered him.
Reaching her, he draped a long black cloak over her shoulders, covering her from their gazes. “You may wear this in the hallways and in the larger parts of the caverns. It will keep you warm.” His eyes caught hers, silently conveying that it would also shield her from view. “It will be expected to be removed when we have reached our destinations.”
“Thiefiell doesn’t like to be kept waiting.” Nathavin reminded them.
Starr found herself being pulled along by Shin and was out in the hallway before she could register what’d happened.
