Sarah climbed the stairs of the Vinay del Zexay inn, her staff tapping the wooden boards quietly as she spotted her destination. Yuber had arrived at their meeting place in Caleria for all of three minutes early in the morning, muttering some incoherent report before disappearing again. An hour later, Luc had asked her to check on Albert, which she had agreed to do without hesitation.
She knocked on the door, not entirely expecting a response. If Albert was anything like he had been two days ago, any answer at all would be hoping too much.
“Enter.”
Despite her initial amazement, Sarah willed herself to open the door without noticeable hesitation. She stepped into the room, immediately detecting a chill that caught her by surprise. Her eyes drifted to the open window, taking in the gray clouds that hung over the city listlessly. She could only assume the cold was from the outside.
Albert sat with his back to her, his attention on whatever he had on the desk in front of him. He turned in his seat as she closed the door, his eyes half-lidded and his face expressionless. The two remained in their respective positions for a moment, staring at one another as if trying to discern something intangible about the other.
“Sarah.” Albert greeted her with a nod of his head. “I suppose Master Luc grew impatient?”
“He is starting to believe the rumors about your skills are highly exaggerated,” replied the girl, staring at the man intently. “Did you see Yuber last night?”
“Of course. You sent him to check on me.” There was absolutely no inflection in the man’s voice as he spoke.
“He didn’t report back until this morning.”
“I detained him,” Albert replied simply. Turning away from the platinum-blonde, the older man straightened a set of papers and stood up. Half-lidded green eyes met icy blue, and Sarah resisted the urge to back away from the other.
Something was different about Albert Silverberg.
She hesitantly took the papers, only glancing at them as Albert began to explain. “I have several contacts in Vinay del Zexay that require a bit more persistence on my part. I will require two days to resolve the problems I have had.”
“What’s wrong with you, Albert?”
As soon as the words left her lips, Sarah felt the air around her grow ever colder. Those deadened eyes focused onto hers again, and the girl felt a lancing shock. Cold, disturbing, and inhuman. “Nothing is wrong.”
Her first instinct was to run, but she held her ground with a stubbornness that surprise her. “You’re not yourself. Something is wrong.”
Something flickered in that green gaze, and the cold air dissipated slightly. Albert blinked and looked at the shorter girl, and he seemed to actually look at the young sorceress. “It’s nothing you can help me with.”
“I’m sure it can’t be--”
“Believe me, Sarah, you can’t help me with this,” pressed the red-haired Silverberg, returning to his desk and sitting down wearily. He blinked hard, slowly dipping his head into his hands as his mind began to clear. What did Yuber do to me last night?
Sarah felt awkward standing there in the middle of the room, still holding Albert’s papers and staring at the man. The air was becoming more bearable, and she finally lowered her gaze to look at the papers the other had handed to her. “You have the assignments on the Six Renowned Knights already?”
“Why else do you think I’ve been here so long?” Albert retorted sourly, raising his head slightly to look at the girl. “Please, Sarah, just leave; I have many things to deal with.”
A faint nod of acknowledgment. “… Take care of yourself, Sir Albert.” The concern was no longer hidden.
Albert groaned to himself as Sarah exited, lightly banging his head against his fists in an attempt to jog his memory. Every time that demon gets involved, I end up not remembering something important from the previous day. I feel like I took several punches directly to the chest.
“Is she finally gone?”
The redhead went rigid at the unexpected voice, sitting up immediately as he looked around the room. Yuber, donned in his full black garb, melted out of the shadows and glanced at the door, slightly annoyed. “Took her long enough.”
“What are you doing here?” Albert demanded, trying desperately to piece together something similar to his normal mask.
“I came to check on you,” came the curt reply, the demon not leaving the spot he had stepped out onto. He eyed the sitting strategist, seeing the badly-hidden distress in the young man’s eyes. “How do you feel?”
There was a tense silence between the two as the question hung in the air, and Albert shuddered as he recalled their strange sexual encounter the night before. He could feel those demonic, jewel-like eyes on him, but could not bring himself to meet the gaze. “My insides feel cold and numb,” he finally admitted. “What did you do to me, Yuber?”
Yuber shrugged. “I just took back what was mine -- my power.”
“Did you have to hurt me like that?” Albert hissed, frowning at the ground as if it would somehow comfort him.
“It was an experiment,” the blonde responded nonchalantly, still gazing at the young Silverberg unabashedly. “Apparently you hadn’t taken in enough of my power for your life force to not be affected by the extracting process. Oops.”
“‘Oops?’” repeated the redhead, his incredulity winning out over his own weariness. He looked over his shoulder at the demon, glaring mildly. “That ‘experiment’ of yours hurt like hell, Yuber.”
A dark chuckle. “You haven’t the slightest idea what hell is, little star.”
Albert shut his eyes, lowering his head into his hands as a headache began to form. The next moment, a hand was in his hair, tousling the burgundy locks even as he tried to sit up again. Yuber silently rounded the chair, kneeling in front of the white-coated strategist and tilting his chin so that they gazed directly at each other. Albert shuddered at those probing, mismatched eyes, swallowing hard as Yuber looked at him coolly.
“You’re not ill or anything, little star?”
“No … and stop calling me that!” the strategist snapped, shaking his head.
“Good.” Yuber proceeded to reach for Albert’s belt, undoing the buckle and moving in for the button at the waist of the young man’s pants.
“Yuber!” Albert gasped and tensed up immediately, arms shooting out and shoving Yuber away before the demon could finish unzipping his pants. “No!” When Yuber reached for the fly of his pants again, Albert punched and knocked the side of the blonde’s head, successfully removing Yuber’s black hat.
The taller man raised a brow at Albert’s reaction, slight annoyance lighting his unveiled face as his movements stopped. “Why did you do that?”
Green eyes narrowed angrily. “I don’t appreciate being taken against my will,” he ground out. “And I don’t appreciate your advances in general as it is.”
“Tough luck, Silverberg.” Yuber deftly captured Albert’s wrists, pinning them to the arms of the chair and leaning in to capture the redhead’s lips. Albert squirmed and twisted in the wooden chair, groaning in frustration at his own helplessness under the demon’s strength. The inhuman strength Yuber possessed allowed him to easily nudge Albert’s legs apart with his knees, keeping them in that position even as he withdrew from the forced kiss.
“Damn… Yuber, stop this.” Albert shook his head and pressed himself back against the chair as much as he could. “Stop this. You have to do anything I say!”
“Where did that naïve little notion come from?” smirked the blonde, hovering an inch away from the other’s face. “You simply summoned me, and I promised my services for your twisted goals. Nowhere in my contract does it not say that I can’t cause you bodily harm.”
A cold knot twisted in Albert’s stomach at those words. He was reminded of that shadowy look-alike, Pesmerga…
“I mean nothing to Yuber.”
“For your sake, I hope you’re wrong.”
His breath hitched as Yuber tightened his hold, kiss-bruised lips parting with concentration as he kept from crying out. Those hands on his wrists loosened after a moment, streaming up the strategist’s arms to part the white coat. Albert grabbed hold of the front of Yuber’s jacket, gritting his teeth intensely as he pushed away from the demon. The force of his motion tipped the chair over, spilling both men to the floor in a tangled mass of limbs.
Albert was caught underneath Yuber, leaving him no better than he had been before. He struggled for breath as the blonde landed heavily on top of him, hands immediately going to Yuber’s chest to try to push him off. He was stopped by the soft rumble of laughter against his stomach. The young Silverberg blinked hard and fell still, watching in confusion as the demon rolled off of him and lay next to him on the floor, laughing loudly and without malice.
Perplexed, Albert lifted himself up on one elbow and stared at the demon with wide green eyes. Yuber studied him with eyes of sapphire and ruby, smirking the entire time. “You actually thought I would do it, didn’t you?”
It took a moment for the young man to find words to voice his shock. “Y-- You were only--?” The smirk answered his question before he had completed his sentence, and surprise was quickly replaced by anger. “You--!!”
Yuber only continued to smile, raising a hand to touch Albert’s face. He gazed up at the mortal with something akin to fascination, his laughter still fresh in his mind as he stroked the young Silverberg’s face.
No. He is weakness. He is exactly what Pesmerga wants to use against you. He should be killed, but the curse won’t let me.
… I would kill him if he weren’t under the curse, wouldn’t I?
He shut his eyes, withdrawing his hand as if he had been burned. He looked guardedly at the confused Albert, suddenly angry at the naïvete in those eyes. Springing to his feet, the demon retrieved his hat and teleported away.
Albert could only watch, speechless, sprawled on the floor in disarray.
I was this close to writing another lemon, but I thought I’d make you all writhe and hate me some more. ^^;; I’m actually surprised how ‘long’ this chapter is, considering I had only planned Sarah and Albert to talk… But we all know how unpredictable Yuber is… *grins*
