Caellia watched closely as Nathavin took aim at the deadly vampire soldier, quietly marveling at how quickly the vampire died. It had only taken two quick shots. The vampire had barely had time to begin his charge before he had fallen to the ground in a lifeless heap.
Taking aim at another vampire, Nathavin brooded on her dream induced confession. He chanced a quick glance at her, noting that she seemed to be having no difficulty yet seeing the vampires, but that might change when they moved out of the weak moonlight. He turned back to the vampire, killing it swiftly. After a few more minutes of demonstration he stepped back toward her and nodded silently at her, indicating that he was ready to let her try.
Stepping forward, Caellia wondered why Nathavin was being so quiet. He had barely spoken to her since he’d woken her up several hours ago. The only things he had said to her were in regards to her training. As she focused on the nearest vampire, she stopped wondering about his strange behavior and concentrated on the task at hand. Four arrows later, she stared at the bloodied being at her feet. Not bad, she thought to herself. It was only two more arrows than what it had taken Nathavin to kill it. She turned to look at him briefly, raising her eyebrows in silent question, wondering if he wanted to comment on her kill. She turned back and selected another vampire when he remained silent.
It was clear to Nathavin that Caellia did not remember her dream; much less know that she’d spoken aloud during it. But he now knew the source of her refusal to confess to him what she felt. She felt that he would betray her, felt he’d leave. He still didn’t understand why though. Why would she believe that he would betray her and leave? Hadn’t he shown her that he loved her and was not going to do that? After all that they’d been through, did she not trust him as much as he thought she did?
Caellia turned to face Nathavin after she’d killed several more vampires. Though he was looking at her she could tell that he was distracted. She approached quietly, not wanting to startle him. “Nathavin?”
Breaking out of his thoughts he sent her a puzzled look. Why had she stopped? He looked around them, the vampires had moved to another location, probably looking for safety in numbers. “Let’s move on.” She had progressed nicely and he felt that she could safely handle a bit more of a challenge.
Staring at his retreating back, Caellia huffed in mild irritation. She had not wanted to change location but it seemed that he’d thought that was what she’d meant. He’d also turned away from her before she could continue to talk to him. She couldn’t understand him. His current mood did not match his mood from earlier in the day. He seemed distant, unwilling to speak.
Nathavin led them through the darkened forest, expertly weaving his way through the trees and bramble. He could hear her mumbling behind him, fussing about the change of location. Clearly she had not wanted to change locations but he wanted to see how well she could fight in the shadows rather than just open moonlight.
Tripping over a tree root, Caellia cursed Nathavin’s back soundly beneath her breath. She hated the fact that she couldn’t see properly in the darkness. Standing slowly she realized that he had continued ahead and apparently didn’t know she’d fallen behind. She stood perfectly still, listening for his footsteps, but she could hear nothing. It was as if he’d simply vanished. She wanted to call out to him, let him know she’d fallen behind but knew that if she did she would gain the attention of the vampires. Caellia looked at her surroundings warily, what should she do?
Her head snapped to the left, her bow drawn and ready as she heard something move behind a tree. Another sound, this one clearly a footstep, caused her to jerk back to the right. Caellia trembled slightly; she couldn’t fire in both directions at once! A low hiss filled the air. Slowly, the vampire came into what little bit of moonlight filtered through the tree branches and Caellia got a good look at it. Her bow shook, it was massive! The sword alone was as tall as she was! As she stood watching, the vampire slowly stretched two bat-like wings before folding them back neatly behind his back. The creature lifted its sword high in the air, looking at it before glancing at her. Though the creature did not say a word, Caellia understood its meaning well enough.
Caellia looked in the direction she knew Nathavin had gone in. The vampires had not blocked the path he’d taken. She glanced back at the massive vampire. Could she outrun it? She knew that eventually Nathavin would realize she was no longer behind him and would retrace his steps. Until then she would have to hold her own.
She stretched the bowstring as far back as she could then let go. The vampire gave an enraged howl as it charged her. Caellia turned and ran a few paces up the path as she snatched another arrow and magic stone from her quiver. She fitted the arrow into the string, then turned and fired quickly. Nimbly she dodged the dagger that the smaller vampire thrust at her as she turned her back to them and continued to race up the narrow path. After gaining some ground she turned, raising her bow high in the air as she summoned her magic, she let go and watched her target stand still while shaking its head, momentarily stunned. Knowing it wouldn’t stay stunned long, she wasted no time barreling back up the path.
As she rounded a bend in the path, it began to slope upwards and the tree cover grew thicker. Caellia could hear the massive vampire begin charging after her once more. Cursing fluidly she pivoted neatly and let another arrow sing through the air. A grunt of pain followed by a heavy thud told her that she’d succeeded in killing the massive vampire.
The smaller one didn’t even acknowledge that its kinsmen had fallen. It simply ran straight up to her and began to slice at her with the dagger it held. Caellia flung her bow up to deflect the dagger while she stumbled backward. Excruciating pain radiated down her right side as the dagger tore into her. Pushing away, she made a short sprint up the path. The vampire warrior stayed on her heels though and she couldn’t get enough room to aim properly. Twice more the dagger ripped into her flesh. Biting back tears, Caellia flung the vampire away from her. She gained enough time and distance to fire a single shot, watching through hazy vision as the arrow narrowly missed the vampire’s neck and instead buried itself deep within the shoulder.
She turned to run again, a mistake. A strangled scream burst from her throat as she felt the dagger drive deep into her unprotected back. Wrenching away, and on pure adrenalin, she brought her bow up and fired point blank into the vampire’s chest. She had killed it. Falling to the ground, Caellia looked up at the dark trees around her. A cold fury began to burn deep within her chest. She would not die like this! She would not! She could not!
Nathavin whirled around as the sound of the scream reached his ears. He cursed himself viciously when he saw that Caellia was not behind him. Tearing back down the path, he prayed that she was alright. Snarling, he killed any vampire that dared to cross his path.
As Caellia lay there, she began to hear rustling in the surrounding trees. She focused her gaze, willing herself to see better in the darkness. A tall, lean, vampire woman glided out from the darkness. Her eyes flicked about, taking in the slain vampires, before darting back to Caellia. The woman stalked forward, quivering in anger. Caellia prepared herself to die. As she stared at the vampire, she heard another sound, the distinctive sound of a bow being drawn taut. Seconds later she saw an arrow suddenly protruding from the vampire’s chest. Twice more she heard the bow being pulled taut before the female vampire fell to the ground dead.
Nathavin raced over to Caellia. He took a brief look at the corpses of the vampire warlord and the vampire warrior. She had killed them alone? His gaze turned back to her. Her white armor was red with blood, her blood. Shillien don’t let her be dead! His eyes skimmed over her, she had a large slash on her right side. Most of the blood on that side of her body was coming from that. But there was too much blood on the ground for that to be her only injury.
“Na…tha…vin…” Caellia croaked out hoarsely, the pain and stress beginning to overwhelm her.
“Shhh. Don’t speak Caellia.” He shushed her, running a hand lightly down her cheek. She didn’t need to talk, she needed to rest! This was all his fault! If he’d only realized she wasn’t behind him! He leaned back to dig through his pack for the healing potions but was stopped when her hand clutched his arm tightly.
“No! Don’t leave!” Her voice was scratchy with pain and fear. “Please don’t leave me!” Caellia had never been so afraid in her life.
“I won’t leave you Caellia.” Nathavin gingerly brushed a tendril of hair from her eyes, “I will never leave you.” Once she settled down enough for him to look through his pack, he grabbed two vials of white potion. “Here, these will help.” Carefully, he helped her to sit up to drink them. As he did so, he got a good look at her back. What he saw shocked him. Her back had sustained the most damage. The wound was deep and was still pouring blood. He looked at her face closely. It was pale, too pale, and she was beginning to shake uncontrollably. The healing potions he’d handed her would not be able to heal her injuries alone.
“Nathavin, what’s wrong?” Caellia asked through her pain.
“Hush Caellia. Don’t try to talk.” Taking a precautionary look around them, Nathavin scanned the area for any other vampires. Seeing none, he scooped Caellia up, being mindful of her back. He waited until she’d adjusted to be more comfortable before he started making his way east. She could not train any more in this condition. They would have to head back to Goddard.
Caellia winced at the pain in her back but stayed quiet, trusting him. As time passed and night gave way to day, she sank into a deep melancholy. She had failed. She had not been able to keep up with him and had caused their excursion to be cut short. Distressed that she had disappointed him, she felt remarkably guilty.
Nathavin stared down at her. She had done amazingly well to survive those vampires alone. He cradled her closer to his chest, resisting the urge to hasten his steps. He didn’t want to jostle her and cause more pain. They soon came to the eastern bridge that marked the end of the forest of the dead. As he stepped onto the bridge, sunlight that had been blocked by the mysterious forest shone down brightly, causing him to squint in momentary blindness. He could feel Caellia tense up as well before she turned her face to his chest, blocking most of the sunlight out of her eyes.
Nathavin walked all through the day and well into the night, covering as much distance as he could without stopping. He stopped outside of the Devil’s Pass, noticing that the construction of the new fortress was complete. Nathavin trudged up the long winding path to the gates of the fortress. Once the guards saw him, they wasted no time opening the gates. As he walked past, he ordered the nearest one. “Bring me a healer, now!”
A wizened old dwarf ran up to Nathavin on his short, stubby legs. Taking one look at Caellia, he motioned and said gruffly. “Follow me, there’s a bed she can rest in over here.”
Nathavin nodded curtly and followed the dwarf inside a large building. He laid Caellia down on the bed the dwarf indicated then looked at the dwarf sternly. “I want complete privacy. No one is to enter this room except for the healer.”
“As you wish Lord Nathavin.” The dwarf replied humbly before backing out. He didn’t need to be told that the next person who entered the room would be shot dead if it wasn’t the healer.
Nathavin finally looked down at his armor. The front of it was soaked in her blood. His stomach twisted, she had lost so much blood! Kneeling beside the bed, he gently began brushing her hair with shaking fingers. “Caellia, please be alright.” He knew she couldn’t hear him, had passed out from the blood loss, but he still whispered to her anyway. “Please be alright.”
The Shillien Elder looked on quietly as Nathavin broke down and wept openly at the side of the bed. He looked at Caellia. There was no way he could let her die. It would take all of his skill as a healer, but he could not let her die. If she died, Nathavin would not recover.
Nathavin felt a hand on his shoulder, gently pulling him away from the bed slightly. He sent a frosty glare at the male elder.
“I will not ask you to leave my Lord, but I will need some space.” The elder intoned respectfully. “Where is her most severe injury?” Once learning that it was her back, he had Nathavin carefully turn her over. He kept his face devoid of all emotion as he saw the extent of her injury. She would be lucky to make it through the night.
Nathavin watched in worried silence throughout the process. Once done, he gripped her hand and once more began to comb through her hair.
The elder watched a few minutes longer before suggesting quietly. “Perhaps you should get some rest. She will not awaken for quite some time.”
“No. I will not leave her.”
“I didn’t say you had to leave her. Only that you should get some rest.”
Nathavin growled out. “I will not sleep while she is so badly injured that she cannot speak!”
“But my Lord…” The elder began to protest.
“NO!” Nathavin stood up quickly, his body tense and rigid. “You’ve done your job, now leave!” After watching the elder leave, he turned back to Caellia and whispered. “I promised you I would not leave and I won’t.” She remained unresponsive. “Please Caellia, say something!” Nathavin cursed explosively at her continued silence. Gripping her hand tightly, he fell into a despairing silence.
