Kattath strode briskly through the castle, gazing critically at various servants going about their work. She stopped several times to further instruct them on how something should be done or what they were to do next. Coming to a window, she stopped briefly and looked outside and was mildly surprised. It was already midday. She had been up all night overseeing the preparations for the castle and had not realized it. A slight frown marred her features. Nathavin and Caellia would be arriving soon. They should have left early this morning.
A growl of frustration escaped her. It was taking too long to prepare the castle. Though Nathavin would not wed Caellia as soon as they came inside the castle gates, Kattath did know that he intended to wed her within a day, two at most, upon their return. Realizing that she was wasting time that could be put to better use, she swiftly made her way downstairs. There was still yet another matter that needed to be seen to: Caellia’s gown.
A pink haired dwarf huffed as she balanced precariously on the stack of wooden boxes, three to be exact. Why do the elves have to be so tall? She thought irritably as she carefully stitched the beads onto the neckline. The boxes teetered dangerously and she sucked in a breath as her arms shot out to the sides to regain balance. Heaving a relieved sigh, she took the hair braid that had fallen loose and looped it again at the side of her head before securing it with a pink ribbon. Looking determinedly at the neckline of the dress, she muttered a dwarven curse, if only the elves weren’t so tall! After a few more false starts and near topples, the needle flew expertly as she found a rhythm and her sense of balance on the stacked boxes.
Kattath, in a hurry, did not bother to knock on the door to the dwarven seamstress’s room. She simply entered, flinging the door open widely.
The dwarf, focused on her work and not expecting an intrusion, jumped in surprise. Her tenuous balance on the boxes shattered, she teetered for a brief instant as the boxes wobbled beneath her. The boxes, stacked unevenly, didn’t hold under her sudden shift of balance. She and the boxes all came crashing to the floor.
Kattath could only stare at the poor dwarf lying sprawled among the fallen boxes. She had not meant to startle her. Muttering apologies, she crossed over to the girl and began picking up the boxes and helping the girl to her feet.
The dwarf glared at Kattath and spat. “You should knock first!” She brushed away Kattath’s hand and stood up by herself, brushing her derriere off as she did so. “I told you I would call for you when it was finished!” She stared upwards at Kattath, then sighed irritably and backed a few paces away. What was the use of trying to stare someone down when you weren’t eye level with them?
Biting back a chuckle, Kattath merely motioned to the dress. “How much more time do you need?”
“It is almost complete. There are a few minor details that I cannot address until she is here in front of me.” The dwarf restacked her boxes and clambered back on top of them, setting to work again.
Kattath took a few minutes to examine the frothy confection of material that was draped on the mannequin. It was lovely. The dwarf had outdone herself. Her eyes fell on a second mannequin, covered in a black satiny material. “That is his?”
The dwarf answered without looking up from her work. “Yes.” After a few minutes of silence, the dwarf looked back at Kattath. “Isn’t there something you need to be doing?” She hated having people watch her while she worked.
Kattath glared darkly at the dwarf but said nothing as she left the room. The dwarf was right after all. She did have other matters that needed to be addressed. Kattath made her way to a large chamber with a massive table at its center. The chamber was normally used as a planning room to plan out large scale battles. However she was now using it as a command post of sorts to plan out and detail every aspect of the preparations for the wedding. When she arrived, she found several servants already there and clamoring for her attention. Listening to them, she realized that despite many setbacks the preparations were going smoothly. The castle would be ready for the wedding to take place in two days.
Nathavin slowed the strider to a brief stop when he saw the outline of the castle come into view. They were nearly home. He carefully shifted Caellia’s sleeping form in his grip, making sure not to wake her, before urging the strider into a swift run.
Though the healer had said Caellia was well enough for travel, she had become tired soon after leaving the fortress. Nathavin was glad he had insisted on them traveling on the strider. She would not have been able to travel the distance on foot. It had not taken much effort on his part to convince her to take a short nap. He laughed lowly; she was still taking that ‘nap’. She had not woken up once and that suited him fine. He didn’t want her pushing herself beyond her limits.
They had now reached the massive stone ramp leading up to the gates of the castle. As the strider began the run up, Nathavin felt Caellia shift slightly. No doubt the change in angle as the strider ran up the incline and the slight temperature drop from being in the castles shadow were waking her up. He glanced down at her briefly, noticing that she still had her eyes closed. The sound of the massive gates swinging open and the cries from the watchmen announcing their arrival reached his ears. Slowing the strider to a lumbering walk, he leaned close to Caellia and whispered, more to himself than her, and felt an immense satisfaction as he spoke. Mere words had never felt so right to him before. “We’re home.”
He knew she was fully awake and only pretending to still be asleep when her breath hitched slightly before resuming its normal pattern. If he hadn’t been paying attention he never would have noticed it. He decided to let her continue to feign sleep as it would give him an excuse to send everyone away quickly. Giving anyone who came to close to them a meaningful glare, he continued on into the courtyard.
Kattath was waiting to greet them. She’d heard the watchmen announce his arrival and had hurriedly gone to meet them. Seeing Caellia, she raised an eyebrow at Nathavin. Why was she pretending to be asleep?
Nathavin shook his head at Kattath. Now was not the time to answer her. Instead he turned his attention to Caellia. “Caellia, we’re back.” He leaned down further to whisper in her ear. “I know you’re not asleep.” He watched her eyes closely as they fluttered open and she glared at him.
It figured that he would know she hadn’t been sleeping, she groused silently. He seemed to know everything she did. Muttering lowly so that only he could hear, “At least now I can get off this beast!”
Nathavin choked back several suggestive retorts he could have made at her unfortunate and unintended provocative choice of wording. He settled for leering at her instead.
Caellia squirmed uneasily as he smirked down at her. Why was he looking at her like that? What had she said? The moment stretched uncomfortably and she attempted to get down, only to find that she couldn’t. Her eyes rose slowly to his as her heart rate sped up. “Let me down.” She couldn’t control the slight nervous tremor in her voice.
Nathavin waited a beat before answering her, “As you wish.” He lowered himself from the strider first then reached up and pulled her off. He subtly allowed their bodies to brush together briefly as he pulled her off the strider. A knowing smile crept onto his face as he watched her stumble backwards quickly after her feet touched the ground and he released her. It pleased him to no end that he could affect her with such a simple action.
Kattath took pity on Caellia and intervened, speaking in a brisk tone. “Everything has been prepared for your arrival. Caellia, your rooms have been prepared and there is a warm bath waiting for you.” She gave a barely perceptible nod at Caellia’s grateful look. The girl’s aura practically screamed ‘thank you’. “Nathavin, there are several things that require your approval before I can finalize arrangements.”
Jumping at the slight pause in Kattath’s announcements, Caellia quickly excused herself and headed off to her rooms.
Kattath watched her go before turning her attention to Nathavin. “What possessed you to do that?” She was further puzzled when Nathavin only laughed. Realizing that he was not going to explain, she shrugged and led him to the chamber from which she was coordinating the wedding plans.
It was some hours later when she finally climbed the stairs leading to Caellia’s rooms. Nathavin had wanted to know every single detail of the planning and had insisted on inspecting the progress of the preparations himself. They had decided that the wedding would take place the morning after tomorrow. A tired laugh escaped her as she remembered him trying to inspect the progress on the wedding gown.
The dwarven female had not been pleased to be interrupted again and had made sure he was aware of it. Still using the three stacked crates, she had luckily not fallen to the floor when he’d entered the room. However upon seeing that he was in the room, she had covered the gown quickly with a dark colored cloth, preventing him from seeing the dress. She had then leapt down from her makeshift ladder and grabbed up a massive axe before coming to stand in front of him. She had then bitterly complained about endless interruptions while bouncing back and forth from one foot to the other with her axe swinging threateningly in her hand.
She hadn’t seemed to care that she barely reached Nathavin’s waist. What had surprised Kattath the most was that the dwarf had actually managed to back Nathavin out of the room. And even more surprising was that once he was out, she’d slammed the door in his face and he’d said nothing. There had not even been a flicker in his aura, he seemed to simply accept the fact that he’d been essentially thrown out of a room in his own castle.
As she approached Caellia’s door, she wondered how the young elf was doing. She knocked softly, not wanting to disturb Caellia if she was asleep. It was quite late. Noises coming from inside indicated that she was up and apparently moving things around and Kattath rapped the door a bit harder. “Caellia?” The sounds stopped and Caellia opened the door.
“Yes?” Caellia asked.
Kattath took one look at Caellia and knew she was up to something. “What are you doing?”
“Nothing.” Caellia replied immediately.
Kattath raised her eyebrow skeptically. “Then let me in.”
Caellia twitched, “I’m about to go to bed, if you want to talk about something…”
“Caellia,” Kattath interrupted, “do not be thinking of doing anything foolish.” She pushed the door open wider and peeked inside the room. As she looked behind the door her eyes caught sight of a large chest that had been pushed from its position across the room. It was now sitting in front of another door. Her eyes frowned in confusion a second. A moment later she realized that the door that was being blocked was a connecting door to Nathavin’s rooms.
She burst out laughing. Nathavin had told her of a time when Caellia had tried to lock him out, thinking that she could get away from him by locking herself in her rooms. She hadn’t thought of the fact that since it was his castle he could access whatever room he wanted. Neither had she realized that his rooms were adjacent to hers and connected by a door. He had simply gone to his rooms and had entered hers through the connecting door, surprising her.
Caellia had apparently remembered that and was now taking precautions in an attempt to make sure it didn’t happen again. “That will not stop him Caellia.” Kattath couldn’t keep the laughter out of her voice. “If he truly wants in here nothing will stop him.” Satisfied that Caellia was not planning anything more foolish, she bid her goodnight and exited the room.
The next morning Caellia found herself being awakened late. She found it strange that they had let her sleep most of the morning but said nothing. After a late breakfast, she began to roam the castle looking for Nathavin. She wanted to ask him when they would resume training. Strangely though, no one seemed to know where he was. The castle was clearly in an uproar. Servants were racing about to and fro, dashing madly back and forth on important errands. She had even seen a few of them arguing viciously amongst themselves, only to clamp their mouths shut when they caught sight of her.
She tried to make her way to the throne room, thinking that he might be there taking care of whatever matters he needed to tend to, but every time she would get near she was detoured from her goal. The servants would not let her get near the throne room. Sighing in confusion, she trudged back to her rooms.
She wasn’t there long before there was an insistent knock at the door. Swinging the door open she looked out, then down. There stood a pink haired female dwarf with the strangest hair style she’d ever seen smiling up at her.
The dwarf laughed then playfully danced around in a circle before saying in a cheerful voice. “Follow me please!” She quickly turned and ran down the hallway without looking back.
Caellia shook her head confusedly and followed the dwarf, not suspecting the torture that awaited her.
