Dawn cried on for around twenty minutes before Kid noticed her crying slow to a stop. She kept the right side of her face to his chest, her eyes barely open, her eyes red due to her crying. She still had her arms around his waist, Kid's arms still around her shoulders, his right hand raised to the side of her head as he slowly and lovingly stroked along her soft hair. They stayed in silence for several minutes before Dawn gently said "God, I haven't cried like that in ages...I've got a headache, now..." Kid kissed the top of Dawn's head, something Dawn would've smiled at if she weren't still filled with sadness. "You really had no idea that Harlot was your sister?..." Kid asked gently. Dawn closed her eyes fully, saying "In my life, I've only ever ran into slavers a couple of times, and they always either left me alone because they already had whatever slaves they were looking for, or they tried to take me in and I ended up having to kill them...I had heard the name "Harlot Brimstone" once or twice, along with her partner, "Cain Beastly," but...I never saw Harlot personally, it was just a name I heard in a story about slavers that had pulled particularly noteworthy slave runs."
Dawn opened her eyes a little. "I never thought Rose would grow up to be a slaver...Guess I'm not one to judge though, with me being in porn...She probably got into it just to get some good caps, maybe to have some fun...Still..." Dawn slowly began to release Kid, Kid releasing her, in turn. He looked to her face, seeing the heartbroken and sorrowful expression she had. Dawn was looking down to Kid's stomach, her eyes glimmering with tears once more, her bottom lip just gently starting to quiver. "My family's gone...It never hurt before, because...I don't know...There was always a little sliver of hope in the back of my head that at least my little sister and mom were alright, no matter how unlikely it seemed, I couldn't be certain about anything...But now..." Dawn's throat began to tighten up with emotions again, making every word almost a struggle. "My dad's out there somewhere, probably dead...My brother's in the same situation...My mom's dead...My sister's a slaver, and she hates me..."
Dawn gritted her teeth slightly, shutting her eyes as another few tears rolled down her cheeks. Kid reached his arms around Dawn's shoulders, bringing her close once more. Dawn let her face come to the side of Kid's neck, her eyes stinging as she began to cry once more. She reached her hands around Kid's waist again, her body shaking and trembling for a few minutes as she wept. After those few minutes, however, she let out a sniffle, saying "I think I'm done...Christ, I must look stupid...And weak, too..." She raised her eyebrows as she said the word "weak", putting a touch of emphasis on it. Kid reached up to her head, once more feeling along the side of her head, his fingers going through her soft hair. "You told me a long time ago to never cry in front of anybody...Remember?..." Dawn nodded gently. "I remember..." She said. Kid leaned his head down, kissing Dawn's left temple. "After you told me that, I asked you if I could cry in front of you...You said that crying in front of you would be okay...So...I think crying in front of me is okay...Nobody else can see you here, it's just you and me, and I'm okay with it..."
Dawn smiled after a moment, Kid's words sinking deep into her mind. She pulled back slightly, but she kept her hands on his waist, his hands on her shoulders. She gazed into his eyes for a few seconds, smiling the whole time. Eventually, the slowly started to come closer, closing her eyes. Kid came closer to her in turn, closing his eyes. Their lips met in a tender and loving kiss, the kiss lasting a second before they kissed a second time. After that second kiss, Dawn pulled back, opening her eyes a little as she affectionately murmured "I love you...More than anything, I love you..." Kid opened his eyes as well, softly saying "I love you, too...Always..." They came close and hugged for a few minutes, the both of them resting their chin on one another's shoulder. As they slowly released each other, Dawn softly said "I'll be okay...It's just another thing in life I have to deal with. They come and go..." She let out a soft sigh. "I'll be fine..." She said, looking to his eyes. Kid smiled a little, raising a hand to the side of her face, gently feeling along her cheek.
She closed her eyes, raising a hand to her face, holding his hand against her face. She smiled a little. "Thanks for coming after me when I went into the back, here..." She said quietly. Kid came close, giving her a soft kiss on the lips, Dawn smiling more in reaction. "I'm done helping Rocky for the day...I'm not in the mood to work any more, not after seeing Rose...Besides, I think he'll be fine...Want to spend the rest of the afternoon with me?..." She said, opening her eyes as she asked her question. Kid smiled, nodding. Dawn smiled more, saying "Alright, go get Libitina...We shouldn't just leave her here...We'll drive to the outskirts, maybe watch the sunset in a couple of hours...Sound good?" Kid nodded. Dawn slowly released his hand, letting him get out of the car. She got into the driver's seat as he headed into the studio, waiting a minute for him to come back. He reappeared with Libitina, walking with her, letting her get into the backseat of the Highwayman before he got into the front passenger's seat. "I told Rocky we'd be gone for the rest of the day..." Kid said.
"Alright..." Dawn softly answered. As they began to drive away from the studio, Libitina quietly said "I'm sorry about everything that happened, Dawn..." Dawn was silent for a second. "...So am I..." She eventually mumbled. When they had neared the outskirts of New Reno, Kid pulled a folded up piece of paper from a pocket on his pants. Unfolding it, he said "I grabbed that paper that Harlot threw to you..." Dawn smiled a little, saying "Thanks, babe..." She reached over, taking it. She drove on until the buildings around them opened up to reveal the horizon. Parking the car, she let the radio play softly as she looked over her bounty. Libitina, whose psychotic episode had ended shortly after being healed by Kid, quietly sat in the backseat. Dawn finished reading her bounty a minute later, leaning forward in her seat, resting her elbows against the steering wheel. Dawn stared out through the windshield, her eyes partially closed.
Everyone relaxed for a good fifteen minutes before Dawn said "We'll drive to Illust...I'll get out of the car, and Libby, I want you to drive around until somebody approaches you...Drive slowly, because I'll be tailing you. If someone approaches you and asks about my bounty, I want you to honk the horn and then speed out of there, that's how I'll know for sure that the person heading up to you is the one that put the bounty on me. I'll take them down, and then it'll all be settled. If I drive fast, I can have us in Illust by the early morning, but whoever's after me probably won't be awake by then, so I'll park the car in the outskirts so we can all sleep for a while. We'll head into the town around noon. Just in case they start shooting at us, I want you to stay out of the car, Kid." She looked over to him. "Stay with me until Libitina honks the horn, then duck into an alley or something."
Kid nodded. "Alright." He said. Dawn leaned back in her seat, looking over her shoulder into the backseat. "Libby? That plan work for you?" She asked. Libitina nodded. "Sure, but you're going to have to show me how to drive." Dawn looked forwards, saying "That's fine. Here, we'll do it right now. Kid, get in the backseat, I need your spot. Libby, get up here in the driver's seat." Everyone switched places, Kid getting in the backseat, Dawn taking his spot as Libitina got into the driver's seat. Dawn took a few minutes to explain how to work the Highwayman, Libitina getting a feel for the vehicle by driving around for a few minutes. When she was satisfied, everyone switched places again. "Alright, we'll do this today and be back by tomorrow night. No sweat." She said, starting to drive the car along the outskirts, heading to the north.
"We've been driving for a few hours, now. The sun's starting to go down in the sky. I can't help but notice how quiet Dawn is...She hasn't said a word since we started driving. Libitina's been quiet, too. I think I'm gonna try to get some sleep, maybe Libitina will, too."
Kid rested his book up on the dashboard of the car, saying "I'm gonna try to get some sleep..." Dawn looked over to him, looking at him for a moment before saying "Hey..." Kid looked over to her. Dawn smiled gently, softly saying "I know I've been quiet, I'm sorry, I've just been thinking about stuff..." Kid smiled a little, saying "It's alright..." He came closer to her, Dawn and he sharing a soft kiss before he relaxed into his chair. It took almost twenty minutes, but he eventually fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, he found the car to be stationary. There wasn't much light that reached his eyelids. He reached up to his face, rubbing at his eyes for a few minutes, yawning as he did so. When he opened his eyes, he looked over to the driver's seat, seeing Dawn to be gone. He looked into the backseat, seeing Libitina sprawled out in the backseat, obviously sleeping. He sat up, looking around through the windows of the Highwayman, trying to catch a glimpse of Dawn.
He eventually spotted her nearby. To the right of the car lay a large cluster of rocks and rubble, as well as a solitary tree. Dawn was dressed in her dark armour, her helmet in her right hand, her arm hanging by her side. Quietly, he opened the door beside him, getting out of the vehicle. Just as quietly, he closed the passenger's side door behind him. A cool breeze had picked up, feeling along Kid's clothes and skin as he made his way towards Dawn. She heard him long before he reached her, looking over to him with a soft smile. She had her left hand in a pocket on her trenchcoat, her hair over her trenchcoat's collar and hanging down free behind her. Walking up to her, he asked "Did you sleep at all?" She said "Yeah, I only really drove for about an hour after you fell asleep...I decided to stop and get some sleep, as well. Libby did the same. Did you sleep well?" Kid nodded. The sun hadn't even really risen yet, but it was getting close, and so light was just beginning to fill up the wasteland. "Come here, baby..." Dawn said, pulling her left hand out of the pocket in her trenchcoat, holding her hand out to him.
Kid came closer with a little smile, Dawn moving him around lightly until his back met her chest and stomach, his head coming just beneath her chin. She wrapped her arms around him, keeping her right hand with her helmet on his lower stomach, her left hand going to the middle of his chest. He raised his right hand to her right forearm, raising his left hand to her own left, gloved in black leather over his chest. He could feel her chest push into his back through her protective vest, able to feel her bosom move back and forth in time with her slow and calm breathing. They looked off to the side, looking to the horizon, seeing the sky continue to light up as the sun grew closer and closer to breaking away into the sky. "I'm starting to run low on ammo for my Gauss rifle...I'm going to have to head south to San Francisco to buy more. There's this one shop I know that'll have the stuff, all it does is stock tons of high-grade hardware, the kind of stuff the Brotherhood of Steel would have. Of course, the stuff doesn't sell cheap, but I think I've got enough to trade for some more ammo."
"When will we head down there?" Kid asked. Dawn closed her eyes, resting her nose and mouth down against Kid's head, silent for a moment before saying "Mmmm, after we take care of this guy in Illust, we'll head down there and grab some stuff. Then we'll be going back to New Reno, I want to help clean up the city...Or, at least, maybe make some scenes for Rocky, maybe a full movie. If people see that new porn movies are going around, then they might take the rumours about New Reno being free a little more seriously. But I'm a little worried about this bounty..." Kid was silent as Dawn continued a moment later, resting her chin on the top of his head again. "Just because I kill the guy doesn't mean the bounty on my head is gonna disappear. It's a tempting deal...Someone could kill me, take the car to the guy in Illust, get paid, stash the cash, then just kill the guy and take the car, too. I get the feeling a lot of people are going to be attracted to New Reno and Rister, a lot of hunters. The city might not be safe for me at all, anymore...It's not like I can kill every bounty hunter in the wasteland. It might be time for me to move on...Might be time to use those G.E.C.K.s."
Kid said "What will we do with them?" Dawn thoughtfully said "I was thinking of heading north...Finding a quiet valley or mountain somewhere, somewhere where nobody will find us. Then we'll use one of the G.E.C.K.s, and have our own little paradise going...Maybe I'll use the second, too...I'll have to see how the first goes." Dawn took in a deep breath as the sun began to show itself, casting gold across the sky. She and Kid watched it in silence for a minute before Dawn said "And...I guess we'll just live our lives...We'll have peace. We'll be able to grow our own food, life will be good." "What about Libby?" Kid asked. Dawn was silent for a moment. "She can come with us, I guess...But who knows, she might have other plans, she might want to go off and do her own thing." Dawn waited a moment before she softly said "After seeing Rose...I don't know...I just feel like....I don't know, it's hard to explain. I'm just...Tired of it all. I mean, I'd like to stick around and help Keith with the Wrights, but I'm sure he'll be fine. With this bounty on my head, I can't stick around New Reno much anymore. I've seen every place around here, too...I'm not interested in going around anymore. I think I'd like to just rest in one place for once without having to carry a gun everywhere. I think I'm looking to settle down."
Kid smiled a little. "Sounds good to me..." Dawn smiled and kissed the top of Kid's head before saying "Are you sure? I was thinking of doing this pretty soon...As in, maybe in a week. I was thinking...I take care of the guy in Illust, then get more supplies in San Francisco. Help out at New Reno for a bit, and then...Just leave, just go on my way and live in peace with the G.E.C.K.'s help. Of course, lying around in peace would be no fun if you weren't there with me, heh..." Kid smiled and closed his eyes. "Sounds like fun...I wouldn't miss out on it for the world." Dawn grinned a little. They watched the sunrise for a while longer before they both heard a door on the Highwayman open up. Looking over, they saw Libitina. She waved at them. "Let's get a move on." Dawn said. Kid said "Alright..." The both of them stepped away from one another, heading towards the Highwayman. "Good morning, you guys..." Libitina said sleepily. The both of them greeted her in turn, all of them getting back into the Highwayman. Dawn started up the car, driving off towards the north once again.
As she drove along, Dawn related her plan about leaving and using the G.E.C.K.s to Libitina. Libitina liked the idea of peace and solace, and she wanted to stay with the both of them. "You guys are like my family." She said. "You're the only people I really know." Dawn seemed a little touched by Libitina's words, smiling warmly. "It's settled, then. After all this is done, we'll head off and find somewhere to relax from now on. Kid, I can take you to see Dom again, if you'd like..." Kid said "Yeah, alright. Would it be possible to make her a map or something, so she knows where to find us in case anything happens?" Dawn said "If you want to do that, then we're going to have to find a place to settle down at, first. We can't make a map to a place that doesn't exist, yet." Kid said "Alright, let's use a G.E.C.K. and then make a map. Then we can give it to Dom." Dawn said "Okay, that's fine. We'll be in Illust in just a few hours, by the way." Everyone relaxed in the Highwayman, listening to the radio as it softly played a classical tune.
"Well, it's official. Dawn's told us her plans. She says she's tired of all the fighting and such, she says that she's decided to just leave everything behind. Seeing her sister has really had a deep effect on her, I can tell...She says she's thought for a long time about what to do with the G.E.C.K.s, and she said she had always considered leaving everything behind to just live quietly with the help of the G.E.C.K.s...But she said she never really took her plans seriously and thought about actually doing it until she found out her family was gone. She said that, with her dad and brother gone, with her mom dead, and with Harlot hating her, her entire family is more or less out of her life. She says she's gone around the wasteland and helped tons of people, done tons of things...And that now she just wants to rest and relax. Resting sounds great to me, and relaxing with Dawn for who knows how long...With Libby there, I'll always have a good friend with me, aside from Dawn, of course. And if Dom is safe and happy in Rister, and knows where we are in case she ever needs us or really wants to see me...Then the plan sounds awesome to me.
I think I've seen enough violence and killing to last a lifetime, I don't want any more of that crap. So...Here's what we're going to do. Dawn's going to kill the guy in Illust that put the bounty on her head. At first, she said she thought it had been Vince who had put the contract out on her, but she really doesn't think he has the money that the bounty promises. Killing the poster of the bounty won't just make the bounty disappear though, it's likely still going to be circulated around the wastes for a while along with any other bounties. Because the bounty is so tempting, Dawn says she can't trust New Reno anymore, she says that bounty hunters could come after her in droves for who knows how long.
She says that, after she kills the bounty poster in Illust, she's going to head south to San Francisco and get some ammo for her Gauss rifle, and maybe some medical supplies, as well. She'll stop at New Reno then and film some porn scenes for Rocky, maybe grab some food for our trip, as well. After that, we're going to head north and try to find a quiet place to use a G.E.C.K.. After that, Dawn says she'll take me down south to Rister once more to see Dom again, and leave her a map to our new home, as well. And then...We're just going to relax and live in peace. It sounds so nice. Dawn says there'll be grass and trees, fruit and vegetables, it'll be great!"
Dawn, Kid, and Libitina had reached the outskirts of Illust just a couple of hours later. Dawn took on a more serious demeanor as they reached the settlement. "Okay, remember the plan, Libby?" Dawn asked. Libitina nodded. "Mmhmm." She mumbled. "Tell me." Dawn said, wanting to make sure Libitina remembered it all. Libitina said "You and Kid are gonna follow me as I drive into the city, and if someone approaches me, I'll hold up the copy of your bounty. If the person nods or says something about it, I honk the horn and speed away. Kid hides somewhere while you kill the person I honked at. Then I pick you guys up and we leave." Satisfied with Libitina's recapitulation of her plan, Dawn said "Good. Kid, let's go. Libby, pass me my rifle." Kid opened the door beside him, getting out of the vehicle. Libitina grabbed Dawn's Gauss rifle, handing it to Dawn as Kid closed the passenger's side door. Dawn pulled on her helmet as she opened the door beside her, getting out of the vehicle and shouldering her rifle a moment later.
Libitina quickly got out and got back in, sitting in the driver's seat. Before Dawn closed the driver's side door, she said "Keep going down this road here, and you'll come to a sort of park, a clearing. There's a bunch of buildings around, including a really popular diner. Chill out there, I'll keep an eye on the place. If nobody shows up in an hour, drive off into any alley you see, and I'll meet you there." Libitina nodded, saying "Got it." Dawn closed the driver's side door, taking a step back from the vehicle as Libitina started to pilot it forwards, driving down the road in front of the vehicle. Dawn looked to Kid, saying "Let's go." Kid nodded, following after Dawn as she headed towards a nearby alley, an alley that went between the crumbled remains of two rows of houses. Heading through the ruined remains of an entire neighbourhood, they eventually found themselves facing a large clearing of sorts, like Dawn had previously said. It seemed like a large field, what was once a park, but the ravages of the wasteland's radiation had long swept the area clean of grass and other plant life.
Rows of houses, most of them fixed up to serve as proper dwellings, sat on the far side of the clearing, as well as to it's left. To it's right was a large diner, along with several roads that led deeper into the small city. They could easily see the large sign on the diner proclaiming it to belong to a man named "Pops", the diner already buzzing with activity despite the time not even being noon. The both of them could clearly see the Highwayman as it sat in the street near the diner. Dawn leaned her left side against the building to their left, crossing her arms over her chest. "And now, we wait." She said softly. Kid leaned against the building to his left as well, putting his back to it and facing the building across from him, Dawn's backside facing his left side.
Libitina sat in the Highwayman quietly, languidly reclining in the driver's seat while listening to the radio. She had the folded copy of Dawn's bounty sitting in the passenger's seat beside her, the radio playing an upbeat classical tune. She sat there for all of fourty minutes when she suddenly spotted a group of people to be approaching the Highwayman. They were all men, and they were all dressed in metal armour. They were all armed with AK-112 assault rifles. As they approached the car, Libitina grabbed the bounty from the seat beside her, unfolding it fully. She held it up in front of the window to her left, pressing it to the glass, looking to the group from a small section of glass beside the paper. The lead man of the group scanned the paper, still approaching, nodding to Libitina once he had read enough to confirm to himself that the paper was Dawn's bounty.
Libitina twirled her hand back, releasing the paper, letting it flutter over to the passenger's side seat, partially folding up in the air as it did so. She pressed a hand down into the center of the steering wheel, a powerful honk sounding out, startling the approaching men. Libitina switched the car's gears for a moment before stomping down on the gas pedal, the car's tires spinning for a moment before they gripped the ground and shot the vehicle forwards. Dawn had been talking with Kid for a bit before they both heard the honk, but when they did, they both looked over quickly. Kid ducked back a bit until he was totally invisible to everyone that could possibly see him from up ahead, nearly standing by the front of one of the houses that he had just been between. Dawn unshouldered her Gauss rifle quickly, jogging towards the diner. The men that had approached the Highwayman seemed confused as to why Libitina was speeding away, creating a perfect distraction for Dawn's approach. When Dawn thought she was at a good distance for her shots, she got down on a knee, holding her weapon steady as she peered down along it's length.
She fired a shot, striking one man in his torso. The slug instantly blew through his body, blood spraying out behind him for a split-second. As his body fell, Dawn quickly shot another man, killing him, as well. The other four finally reacted then, one of them saying "It's her!!" They all began to burst bullets down at Dawn, spraying bullets inaccurately at her crouched form. Dawn quickly dispatched another man before she felt a bullet impact with the front of her left leg, near her knee. The bullet was stopped by a pocket of bulletproof material, but Dawn still felt the pain of the bullet's impact. She put down another man, leaving two left. One turned and ran. Dawn shot him mercilessly in the back as he attempted to flee. Dawn felt a bullet collide with her chest, stopped by her vest. The last man, she let off a shot towards his face, utterly destroying his entire visage as the bullet tore through his head. Dawn got up, looking around in case there were any more enemies to be seen. When she couldn't see anybody, she went back and got Kid, telling him that the fight was over.
He was relieved, walking with her, approaching the slain men. Hardly seven minutes later, Libitina had driven back. As Libitina got out of the vehicle, she coolly said "Well, that takes care of that." "Indeed." Dawn said softly. She shouldered her rifle, saying "Here Libby, help me get them out of their armour. I could sell it down at San Francisco. Kid, take their rifles. Toss them in the backseat." Many of the people in the nearby diner had looked through the long-shattered windows to see the scene of the fight, many of them instantly deciding to stay out of it all, the rest taking a little longer to reach the same decision. Kid gathered up all of the assault rifles, tossing them into the backseat of the Highwayman. After a few minutes, Dawn and Libitina had undressed the six men of their suits of metal armour, tossing the suits into the trunk of the vehicle. "There, that's done." Dawn said after a sigh. As everyone got back into the vehicle, Libitina asked "I'm pretty hungry. Could we stop by somewhere and grab a bite to eat?" Dawn pulled off her helmet, resting it up on the dashboard of the vehicle. "Sure." She said quietly. "I'm kind of hungry, myself. It's weird that the guys didn't have any caps with them, but then again, it's not really too weird."
Dawn started to drive off, heading deeper into Illust. "They probably intended to simply kill you or scare you off and take the Highwayman. None of those guys probably had the caps to pay, really. Or maybe they had them stashed somewhere, it's possible." "Too bad this won't make the bounty disappear..." Kid mumbled. Dawn said "Yeah...But not all is lost. C'mon, let's get some food. I know a good place, we'll be there in just a few minutes." True to Dawn's word, a few minutes later, they had reached their destination. Kid looked along it. The building was more or less in ruins, but a large wooden sign rested on it's front, over the front door. The sign read "Dirk's Café". Shutting off the Highwayman, Dawn slipped the keys into a pocket on her pants, shouldering her Gauss rifle as she got out of the car. She grabbed an assault rifle, Kid and Libitina getting out of the car and approaching the nearby building. The three of them walked into the dimly lit establishment. Tables with chairs by them were all around the room, a few lights on by the bar on the far side of the room.
A lone man stood behind the counter, looking rather weaselly. "Hey, how can I help you?" The young man asked, sounding like he were shy but trying not to let it show. He hardly looked seventeen, he had grown since Dawn had seen him last. His eyes widened a little as she approached with Kid and Libitina in tow. "Holy shit...Dawn? It's been a long time, Vince said he had had you killed!" Dawn smirked. "Vince? Please. I left town before he even came close to catching me, and even if he did catch me, I would've put him down. Dumb bastard barely knew which end of a gun the bullets came from, let alone had the skill to take me on. Listen, Dirk, let's get some food and drinks for me and my two friends, here. Whatever else the gun is worth, you can give it to me in more food and drinks, just wrap it up and put it in a bag for me, please." Dawn handed Dirk the assault rifle she had brought in from the Highwayman, Dirk raising an eyebrow, obviously impressed with the weapon. He had been about to tell Dawn about Vince had been killed months before, but she had distracted him with her request for food as well as the rifle for payment.
"Nice..." He mumbled, glancing along the weapon. "Okay, sounds good. I'll have the food ready for you guys in no time, and while you're eating, I'll put everything else in a bag for ya." Dawn nodded, saying "Alright, let's take a seat, guys." Dawn walked off with Kid and Libitina, heading over to a table on the far side of the building, nearly in the corner of the building. Dawn kept her back to the wall, facing the front door to the establishment, looking to it keenly. While the three of them waited for their food to be finished up, Kid and Libitina spoke happily about Dawn's plan. Dawn smiled softly as she listened to their happy voices. She hadn't seen either of them speak so excitedly about something in ages, it seemed they were both genuinely excited about having some peace and quiet. Dawn loved the idea, herself, but she couldn't help but wonder how long the peace and quiet would last.
How long would it last before someone discovered their lush garden paradise? Depending on how well she chose the location, it could be ages before anyone found them, years upon years, even. The last thing Dawn would want to deal with was a violent group of raiders stumbling across their G.E.C.K. affected land, storming it and thinking they could just take it for their own. Dawn knew she'd have to be careful with whatever spot she chose; consideration of the utmost care would be necessary, it wouldn't be a choice she could make lightly.
A good fifteen minutes later, and Dirk was coming out to their table with a plate in each hand. Setting a plate down in front of Dawn, he set the other down in front of Libitina. He jogged back through a door behind the counter, coming back a few seconds later with a plate in his left hand and three bottles in his right hand. He placed the third plate in front of Kid, placing a bottle at each plate. "I'll start packing a bag for ya." He said, just before turning and leaving. Everyone noticed that the bottles Dirk had placed in front of everyone were bottles of beer. Libitina snatched her's from the table, quickly uncapping it with a bare hand, tossing the cap over her shoulder. She took a few gulps from her bottle, smiling contently afterwards. Dawn uncapped her's yet didn't drink from it, placing it by her plate. She smiled with amusement as she began to take off her gloves, resting her gloves by her plate.
"I don't know if you're going to like the taste of beer, Kid...Most people don't their first time drinking it." Kid couldn't uncap the bottle with his hands, so Libitina gladly did it for him, taking a quick swig of his bottle while she had it in her hands. As Dawn took off her trenchcoat and hung it over a nearby chair, Kid took a gulp from his bottle of beer. His face twisted up in a bit of disgust, but he swallowed it down. Dawn grinned with amusement, and Libitina laughed happily for a few moments. "God, it tastes like piss!" He exclaimed. Dawn said "It's an acquired taste. I didn't really like regular beer all that much, either, until the first time I got drunk. After I got drunk for the first time, I learned to ignore the taste." Libitina grinned and said "And besides, there's some liquors and stuff out there that taste good. I once had one that tasted like cold fruit, it was actually kind of good. Most taste bitter as hell, though. Kinda burn the throat, too." Kid took another sip from his bottle before putting it down by his plate, saying "I think I'd prefer a Nuka-Cola, but whatever."
On everyone's plate was a small brahmin steak, sandwiched between two pieces of whole-grain bread. There were some bits of crunchy mutfruit, as well as some Dandy Boy apples. There was even an iguana-on-a-stick lying on Libitina's plate, seemingly to make up for the fact that her plate had slightly less apples and mutfruit pieces than the others. Everyone ate their food, Kid and Libitina speaking on Dawn's plan some more. At one point, just as she swallowed a bit of cooked iguana, Libitina suggested that Kid ask Dominique to come along with them all to their new home. Kid seemed to like the idea at first, but then he said "I think she wants to stay with the other reavers...And besides..." Kid paused for a few seconds. "Well, let's just say I don't think she'd want to come with us...Let's just leave it at that..." The two finished up their food as Dirk came back out to them with a big burlap sack, bulging with items within. He set it down by their table, saying "There, I figured out how much the rifle was worth and gave the rest to you in food."
Dawn pulled her gloves on, standing up as she said "Perfect. Thanks, Dirk." She slipped her trenchcoat on as Kid and Libitina got up from the table, Dawn shouldering her rifle. Kid had only drank a little more than half of his bottle's fluid, so Dawn reached over, gulping the rest down quickly. "Libby, grab the bag, please. Time for us to head out." Libitina hoisted the sizeable bag up in her arms, the three of them heading over to the front door of the building. Libitina found a spot for the bag of food in the backseat, but things were starting to get rather cramped. Everyone agreed to completely finish off Dawn's old bag of food before looking to the new one, as finishing it off would make more space in the back of the car. Dawn told the others to get comfortable, because the trip down to San Francisco was going to take several days.
"We've been driving for two days, now. We ran into some trappers the other day, shortly after leaving Illust. They asked if we were interested in buying any gecko pelts. Dawn wasn't interested, and we all went on our way. I remember when I had shot a silver gecko in the middle of the night, ages ago...Dawn was impressed with me for shooting it in the dark. I was just scared of the thing, it was big and the thought of it coming at me in the dark freaked me out. The trappers that go after them must be pretty tough. I asked Dawn the other day if she thought the G.E.C.K.s would really work and do as they're supposed to. Dawn said that they had better, otherwise she'd be really pissed. She said she couldn't see why they wouldn't work, as they were supposedly made by pre-war America's greatest scientists with the sole purpose of allowing the remnants of America, through the people of the vaults, to recolonize the lands of the country.
She said that Vault City was made when they left their vault and used their G.E.C.K., and that New Arroyo was made when the Chosen One used a G.E.C.K., so she says that she can't see why her two G.E.C.K.s wouldn't change the land in a similar way. I think it's amazing that such a thing could exist...A suitcase that can change the land around it. It sounds incredible, almost too incredible. I wonder how many vaults there really are?...I'm assuming that they all got at least one G.E.C.K., so why aren't there more fertile places out there in the wastes? Maybe people broke into the vaults and destroyed the G.E.C.K.s, not knowing what they could do. Or maybe...There are tons of fertile places out there, just nobody has seen them? Maybe people from vaults took the G.E.C.K.s and, instead of using them right outside the vault door, right out in the open...They took them somewhere secluded, somewhere private, and used them there? That's what Dawn wants to do with her's at least, maybe other people got the same idea?"
After driving for four days, the group ran into a cluster of fire geckos. Dawn stopped the car just as a gecko breathed out a long trail of fire towards the vehicle, the fire stopping just short of the vehicle's bumper. The other geckos began to race towards the vehicle, Dawn quickly backing up. "Fucking fire geckos!..." She muttered, her eyes narrow. "How the hell can they do that?!" Kid asked with fear. Dawn sped forwards and to the left, bashing into the side of one of the large and dark purple lizards, sending it sprawling. The others let loose long sprays of fire towards the back of the car, the fire licking along the vehicle's form yet not doing terrible damage to it. "Doesn't matter how they do it, what matters is that they wanna do it to you." Dawn said. The rest of their day was uneventful, nothing crossing the group's path.
After driving for a week, the group was very close to San Francisco. The group could all see the ocean through the windows of their car, vast and murky. Many miles down the coast, they could see what remained of San Francisco, seeing the large buildings that the Shi living there had built. Driving for the rest of the day, they had neared the outskirts before they suddenly found themselves driving near a group of people dressed in purple robes, wielding fearsome submachine guns and grenades. Dawn sped past them rapidly, saying "Hubologists. I suppose they weren't all killed." "Hubologists?" Libitina repeated curiously. Dawn nodded. "It was this cult around San Francisco a while back. I'm not gonna get too deep into it, but trust me, they believed in some weird shit." They all went quiet then. As they drove into San Francisco, Kid saw tons of people around that, like the yakuza from before, all had facial features that reminded him of Hiro. Dawn parked the car under a large red arch that went across the street, Dawn grabbing the bag of spare weapons she had in the backseat. She shoved all the assault rifles into the bag, making it bulge almost to the point of tearing, but she hefted it up in her arms and stepped out of the vehicle.
As she got out, she said she'd most likely only be gone for around twenty minutes. Closing the door behind her using her rump, she walked off, heading towards a nearby alleyway, disappearing down it. Kid and Libitina relaxed in the car for a while, not able to listen to the radio as Dawn had totally shut the car down. Sitting in silence for a few minutes, Libitina eventually said "You gonna miss driving around and stuff?" Kid shook his head lightly. "Nah. I've pretty much done nothing but drive and walk around ever since I woke up for the first time, months ago. I think I'd like to just settle down somewhere, like Dawn." Libitina smiled a little. "As crappy as it can be sometimes, I think I'm going to miss travelling around. Going from place to place, feeling the wind in my hair, seeing new things...Didn't care much for meeting new people, but seeing new places was always interesting." Kid had to agree, seeing new places tended to be nice. Seeing the land that the G.E.C.K. produced, though, would be most interesting of all, he believed.
"When we stop at New Reno, I should see about getting myself a dildo at the Golden Globes. I might need the companionship at our new home." Libitina said absent-mindedly. Kid looked up towards the ceiling of the Highwayman for a moment, feeling just a touch exasperated with Libitina for bringing up sex again, but try as he might, he couldn't stop himself from blushing a touch. Libitina sat up in the backseat, smiling warmly as she said "If we're going to be living together for who knows how long, you've got to agree to something Kid, you have to." Kid raised an eyebrow curiously. "What?" He asked. In a very friendly tone, she said "You've got to masturbate with me every once in a while, you have to. Please, Dawn doesn't have to know, and we don't have to touch each other." Kid opened his mouth to speak, but Libitina continued, saying "If you want, we don't even have to look at each other while we do it, we could do it with our backs to one another or something. Just hearing your breathing and the little sounds you make would be hot enough for me."
Libitina blushed, grinning a little, then. "Please? Pretty please?" She asked, purposefully making her voice sound more cute by speaking in a high-pitched tone as well as making her voice a touch more quiet. Kid made a face for a moment, pouting his lips together and pushing them off to the side. A second later, he said "Libby, we-" She cut him off again, speaking cutely once more, softly saying "Please? Please, Kid?" Because of her cute voice, when she said the word "please", it ended up sounding much more like "pwease". Kid blushed a little at her determination. He could tell she didn't want to drop the subject. "...We'll see! That's all I'm going to say right now...Sheesh..." He said, looking off to the side, feigning annoyance. Libitina grinned and held back a laugh, pulling herself between the two front seats for a moment, giving Kid's painted left cheek a kiss. A moment after Libitina had sat back in the backseat, Dawn had reappeared. She quickly walked over to the trunk of the car, opening it up, saying "Hey Libby, come out here and help me with the metal armour!"
Libitina got out of the Highwayman, and Kid saw them make several trips back and forth between the car and the alleyway Dawn had gone down earlier. On the third trip, Libitina got back into the Highwayman. She let out a sigh as she shut the door behind herself. "Damn, Dawn's looking at some tough hardware!" She exclaimed. Kid was curious, but Dawn came back not long after, a pleased smile on her face. She was carrying the bag of spare weapons in her arms, which seemed less full of items. Behind her, a man dressed in a black vest and black pants as well as black gloves, the vest open to reveal a blue shirt, followed after her. In his arms, there seemed to be the pieces of a suit of some sort of combat armour. Dawn let the man put the armour in the trunk before she got into the driver's seat of the vehicle. She was smiling happily as she said "I sold all the crap we didn't really need, not anymore, at least. Kid, I got this for you." She reached into the bag, pulling out a large pistol, handing it to Kid.
The handle was brown wood, while the rest of the pistol was black. Two small lights were on the side of the pistol, which were currently green. A strange thing he noticed about the pistol was that it had two triggers to it. Dawn said "It's a .223 pistol, pretty rare. It's very strong for a pistol, it might take some getting used to, for you. If anything ever threatens you though, you'll be able to blow a hole through them, with that." Dawn reached into the bag again, saying "And for you, Libby...I got this. An H&K G11E." She pulled out a strange sort of submachine gun from the bag, handing it to Libitina in the backseat. It looked almost like a big rectangular piece of hard plastic or coloured metal, with a handle sticking out form under it near the back, a small cylinder of a barrel sticking out of it on the far side of it's front. Half of the weapon's form was white, while the farther front end of the block-like barrel was completely black. Behind the handle of the gun, there was a block of ammunition inserted into the weapon's frame. A lit-up bar was on the side of the weapon's frame, with the bottom of the bar being yellow and the top being orange.
A scope sat on the top of the weapon's frame, the lenses of the scope being green. "Oh, sweet!" Libitina exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. Dawn smiled happily. "That thing was damn expensive, one of the most expensive things I've ever bought. It's one of the toughest submachine guns out there, though...Could probably rip a super mutant in half with just a couple bursts." Libitina and Kid thanked Dawn, Dawn saying "Don't worry about it. I got some ammo for my Gauss rifle, as well as some microfusion cells for the car. I've got some ammo for your gun, Kid, and some for your's as well, Libby. The armour I got was a suit of combat armour mark two, which, when you can fit into it, will be for you, Kid. It'll be a little too big on you for now, but one day you'll be able to fit into it. Buying all this stuff cleaned out anything left over from what I sold though, so there's no change. Here, Libby, put this down by your legs and pass me the bag with medical supplies." Libitina took the bag from Dawn's hands as she reached into the backseat with it, putting the surprisingly heavy bag down on the floor between the backseat and the front seats.
Grabbing the bag of medical supplies, which felt lighter than was comfortable, she lifted it up and handed it to Dawn. Dawn asked for some help again, asking for Libitina to carry the sack of caps that was in the backseat as well, needing someone to help her carry the stuff around. Libitina agreed, picking up the sack of caps, getting out of the car with Dawn. As they walked off towards a nearby building, Kid inspected his new weapon. The .223 pistol did, indeed, look like it had some punch to it, Kid wondering for a few moments how long it would take for him to adjust to the weapon's kickback, thinking of how he'd have to try the weapon out to get a proper feel for it. When Dawn and Libitina came back several minutes later, the bag of medical supplies looked much more full, while the bag of caps looked many times smaller than it did before. They got back into the vehicle, Dawn handing the bag of medical supplies to Libitina, who rested it down on the floor of the Highwayman. "We've still got a bunch of caps, enough to buy ourselves a good amount of food if we need to, for whatever reason." Dawn said.
Libitina added "But our meds, we've got a ton, right?" Dawn nodded as she started up the car. "Yeah, more than enough for whatever could happen. Plenty of stimpacks and Super Stimpacks, a field medic first aid kit as well as a paramedics bag for emergencies, and a shit load of chems to go with it, too. We're set." Kid smiled. "On to New Reno, then?" He asked. Dawn nodded, still smiling a little as she started driving through the outskirts of San Francisco. "Yep. If Rocky's studio is all ready, I'll film a couple of scenes for him, help get the word out about New Reno. Then I'm saying my goodbyes to him and Keith, and a bunch of other people around, too. Mister Pink, my guys with the Wrights..." Dawn took in a deep breath before slowly letting it out in a sigh. "I'm gonna miss 'em." Driving out into the wasteland, she headed to the north, the radio softly jangling out a catchy classic...
