~Part 6:
Weaknesses of the Mind~
“Owww…”
Link muttered to himself as he once again tripped over a sharp rock and stubbed
his toe. Now he was in a very narrow and very dark tunnel, and he hadn’t the
slightest clue as to where he was going—he didn’t even know if he was on a path
at all.
“Oww!” Link stubbed his toe again; he was really
starting to get frustrated. Jeez why
couldn’t I have been left any more convenient weapons? Like my ‘Longshot’… or maybe ‘Nayru’s
Love’… that would be nice right about now… then I wouldn’t have to keep
stubbing my big toes! Link thought wryly about all the utilities he once
had at his disposal. Now that he didn’t have them, he realized just how much he
depended upon something that wasn’t needed half the time when he could have
done the job himself without them…. Unless of course it came to his tunics and
boots, then that was another story. At
least I still have my ‘Mirror Shield’. Link grimaced at himself; he really
was weak and pathetic just like the other’s said.
Link slowed down a little and
dropped his shoulders, feeling truly defeated for the first time in his life.
Before he could depress himself any further though, a fast shadow flew past
Link, leaving a cold chill in its wake. Link immediately froze, he thought he
was being followed for a while, but now his thoughts were confirmed. Great, this is just what I need right now…
it’s not like I’m in a bad enough situation so now I have to fight something I
can’t even see…. I can really tell somebody does not like me up there… Link
stood still, not wanting to provoke or happen to miss whatever was tracking
him.
Then the shadow moved again only
this time towards Link. Link dodged the shadow and just barely missed it as he
slammed himself up against the wall of the small tunnel. I have to get out of here, this place too small to fight—I can barely
even run! Link turned and took off down the small corridor, heading towards
the dim light at the end of the cramped tunnel he and his unwanted visitor were
in. Unfortunately the shadow creature was too fast and it was quickly catching
up to Link, practically flying over the sharp rocks and boulders that blocked
the way through the tight space and only slowed Link down more, giving the
shadow creature an even bigger advantage over the slowing Link.
Faster, faster! Must go faster, that thing is so fast, what is it?!
It’s going to catch up to me before I can get out of here! Link decided to
try and throw it off by making a few quick moves of his own, but the shadow
creature seemed to catch on quickly and it only sped up more, getting closer
and closer to Link. It’s too close… yes!
There’s the end! Okay, just make it to the light, you can make it Link, come
on! MOVE! The end of the tunnel was so close
Link could feel the hot gusts of air blowing against him. Right there… as soon
as his foot hit the ground of the outer tunnel area, he was stopped by
something grabbing hold of the back of his tunic and ripping him back into the
tunnel then throwing him back out into the open area with such force it could
have even rivaled Ganon’s power.
Link couldn’t even fathom what
was happening in those seconds; he felt himself being lifted too high above the
ground, and then he was launched across the great expanse of the room in a way
he wished he wouldn’t have been. He soon found himself falling, and the ground
suddenly becoming all too close for comfort. Oh god, this is gonna hurt. Unfortunately, when something soft hits
something hard, something has to break; and break, something did only it wasn’t
the hard something that broke.
A loud and sickening ‘crrrack’ was heard as Link’s right shoulder met the hard
blood-covered ground. He didn’t land immediately, instead he flipped over
himself, landing flat on his back after his shoulder hit the floor, knocking
the wind completely out of him. Link momentarily blacked-out, then everything
came back to him with a sickening force and he almost vomited. He could hardly
breathe, and the pain in his right shoulder was unbearable; everything looked
like somebody had taken a wet paintbrush to an unfinished painting and dripped
the water down it causing it to blur and the colors to swirl together in a very
confusing and dizzying manner. Link was so confused, he didn’t know up from
down and left from right; he couldn’t even remember where he was at and why—he
could barely remember his name!
He fought with all his senses to
try and control the pain and put a reason to the situation but he was too dizzy
and hurt so much, he couldn’t even think straight. He tried to lift his head up
and see what was going on around him but he only succeeded in making himself feel even dizzier and even sicker than before. He
lolled his head from side-to-side, moaning from the agony and ache that
accompanied the broken arm and loss of breath. Then a faint clicking sound was
heard not too far from Link; he didn’t know what it was—it sounded like
laughing but at the same time it didn’t. Link frowned, trying to decipher what
the noise was but he couldn’t straiten his blurry mind and stop the sickening
motion of everything around him.
The clicking continued though
and it only seemed to get louder with each second, leaving Link even more
confused and at a loss as to what to do with the thing that was making the
strange laughing noise when it got too close to him. What am I supposed to do?! I don’t even have any fairies… I can’t heal
my arm, I can’t use my shield—not like it would do any good… God, it can’t end
like this, I haven’t even seen Sheik…I just got here! What am I supposed to
do!!?! Link fought with all he had, trying desperately to hold back the
tears of anguish he felt for himself and the urge to scream out for someone to
help him. Though he knew it wouldn’t matter; there was nobody around to hear
his pleas of help nor would anybody most likely help him if he were to need assistance…
he was dead.
Link didn’t want to give up but
he felt so weak and his arm hurt so bloody much! He lay there, helpless,
wanting nothing more than for the cackling creature to put him out of his
misery; he could feel his whole right side becoming numb with the pain and it
hurt to even breathe lightly, what could he possibly do to save himself now?
The crunching of the dead ground beneath the shadow creature grew louder,
closer to Link and the clicking laugh grew more fierce
with each step it took. Link closed his eyes as tightly as he could and blindly
groped for something—anything that could possibly help him, even in the least.
Breathing so loud, the creatures breath was on Link’s face down his throat, the heat
flowing through his tunic across his chest. Link’s breath quickened with the
foreign heat nearing closer and closer to his body—he could smell the shadow
creature it was so close. He couldn’t fight the urge to open his eyes and
before he knew what he had done his wide baby-blue eyes flew open and he was
staring face-to-face, eye-to-eye with the shadow creature that was about to
kill him. Link’s eyes widened to an impossible size and he found himself
holding his breath in fear that one wrong move could cost him his life sooner
than the creature originally intended.
The shadow creature looming
above Link was enormous! It was taller than Ganondorf was; now it seemed
obvious as to why it was able to lift Link so high off the ground and throw him
so far, but it was unbelievable at how fast the thing was for such mass. It had
broad shoulders that were tipped off with three very sharp looking spikes on
each side and the arms were practically as long as the creature was tall. Its
skin or scales or whatever it could have been called was a dark brown, almost
as if it had been working out in the sun all its life; there wasn’t a single
square inch of its body that wasn’t pure muscle and didn’t show it—every time
the creature moved even the slightest bit the muscles in its arms and chest and
stomach rippled with the power that threatened to end Link’s life any moment.
It had hands and feet—five fingers and toes on each, it even looked like it was
Hylian… at one time, but now it looked like a
creature that had been tortured for thousands and thousands of years, a poor
soul that had to suffer through the slavery of the Underworld and was forced to live through it and the only
way to survive was to become stronger than those around it and become fiercer
than even the most cruel and frightening of monsters.
It’s face was twisted back with
a snarl across its lips to flash quite a large set of very sharp and very long
fangs witch looked nothing like a Hyrulian but it
still had a nose—very blunt and flat across its face. A few scars adorned its
left cheek—one trailing down its large chin and on the other side a very large
and deep scar ran across its upper cheek just below its eyes witch seemed to
enchant Link the most. They were so piercing and dark—demanding, pulling Link into
them and making him forget everything else except those eyes and the desire
within them. The creature’s breath became louder and grew quicker as it inched
closer to Link, bringing their faces only centimeters away from each other.
Link didn’t know what was happening, he was completely lost to the world around
him and himself, all that mattered were those dark piercing blue eyes and the
creature they belonged to.
Link’s eyes began to flutter
closed and his body completely relaxed, totally unaware of the danger he was
in. All pain left his arm and chest and Link felt as though he was floating in
mid-air. He opened his eyes one more time and saw the creature smiling at him,
or with what he thought was a smile—for the shadow creature. Link frowned, not
understanding why, but he felt as though this was wrong that the whole act of
letting go and giving himself to the creature above was completely wrong but he
did not understand why he felt that way either—everything left him: common
sense, reality, imagination, fear, worry, anger, confusion, pain, love… all to
be replaced with… nothing. But one thought still clung strong to his heart and
mind, Forgive me Sheik…I love you…
And before he knew what happened next, his world went completely black and his
senses completely blank.
