The two raced through the road's surrounding foliage, just out of sight. The screams grew closer, and soon torches began to dance through the leaves. A quick peek revealed a convoy, no guards, just villagers. They were in a panic, shouting and running aimlessly. The Sram made himself seen and walked towards them. Voices hushed and peasants drew back. Their alarm grew.
"What seems to be the trouble here?""You best leave before you get what's coming""Don't tell him a thing! He's probably here for a random""My daughter! Please you have to help me! She is gone!"Zell heard all he needed to. Boldly stepping towards the shaking peasants and their tools he proclaimed"And if we find her, would you reward us with…" "Safe passage aboard the caravan?" His head jerked back, to see the grinning Iop, cradling the sword. Mental note, discuss negotiation priorities with Eliandra. "As of. Beat it, Sram""Of course, anything. Just please, help us find her.""Stay here, we'll search." He led Ellie past the caravan. His keen eyes, augmented by the will of the god of shadows caught every detail. Every leaf, every branch. Many footprints none belong to a child. He ran down the road, Iop close behind. A flash of white! A silk thread in the bushes. He dashed through, like wind blowing through the branches. His companion noisily hacked her way through for an easier passage, with her new sword. In overexcitement of the hunt, he didn’t realize the sound of steel was getting fainter. They separated, further apart. The thread was not alone, something was dragged. Another and another littered the branches. A brood of spiders came into view, impatiently digging at the ground. Zell accelerated and with a flash, his daggers segmented the bugs in his path. They were terrified, and their counter attack was pathetic. Their will crushed instantly as an orange blade swept through the bushes, tearing them asunder. What was left scattered unseen. "Where are we going?""This is a hunting party. We are on the right trail. See? All black, no spinners. Come on!" And he rushed off further. He knew where the spiders took their prey. He's seen it before, and it wasn't pretty. But dusk was on, and there was still time. The faint thread seemed to fade, but more appeared. The silk littered the land, twisting and spinning a web of extraordinary thickness. The coverage grew, as trees grew less healthy. The sound of leaves in the wind became quieter the further they went. Bones began to litter the landscape. Zell heard a gasp from behind, but pace did not slow. The ground was a carpet of silk now. And a stench of decay filled the air. Nature was dead, and like a throbbing sore in the land, a silk-covered cave loomed in their path."The small ones are out on the hunt, so they shouldn't pose a problem""Ah, okay." The Iop confirmed, and then added meekly "What about the big ones?""If we're lucky, we get to fight some. And if were not…" he mumbled the last part under breath "…they will be sleeping after dinner". Shivering with anticipation the duo began the slow descend into the fetid depths. The journey down was unnerving on both of them. Moonlight quickly disappeared ad a sickly bioluminescence filled the tunnel. Some kind of festering crawlers produced light. Zell didn't even want to think what they ate. The faint lilac light showed the way, deeper into the earth. The smell was getting harder to ignore. It crept down their throats, made them gag. A nauseating symphony of death and decay, and maybe something more. Empty skulls of animals and people looked out of cocoons, in silent screams. Deeper yet they ventured, no end in sight. A segment of tunnel came into view, bearing no light. Walking through, something felt wrong. Zell's instincts screamed "STOP" and he froze, fist in the air. But to his dread he heard a ping, of a breaking thread. Just like one of his tripwires. With a swoosh the entire segment of tunnel disappeared around them. There was no solid stone behind the silk, it was empty. Ellie gave a scream, and her blade lit up, sending a piercing light in all directions. Their dread grew as they looked around the cavern. Hundreds of cocoons hung on the walls and ceiling, and heaps of garbage littered the ground. Bones of every size, spider shells and other waste. Tiny spiders chittered through the mess. Stalactites rose around the cavern, white silk lining all walls. A dark patch indicated a tunnel on the far end. The two started towards it, but something was terribly wrong. Zell couldn't shut it off, something… something was shimmering down the tunnel. No, it was a reflection and much closer. One, two… eight black orbs reflected orange light. Zell remembered it. Oh no.Howling "Scatter" he ran aside, as the giant shape pounced at them with demonic speed. Two vicious claws swiped overhead, barely missing the Sram. One hit it's mark, and the Iop was picked up violently by her hair, as she vainly struggled in midair. Several layers of jowls opened in a vertical maw, exposing rows of sword-like fangs. A brilliant silver dagger flashed and found an eye. The monster wailed in pain and fury, stepping back and carelessly dropping the girl. It thrashed, trying to pull out the little knife. Eliandra charged. With a scream, the blade sent an uppercut into the monster's chest, shattering black bone plates and sending a jet of ichor all over the place. But the blade barely pierced a few inches, and the gargant rose to it's feet in fury. A claw the size of a tree caught her in the stomach and sent her flying into the wall. With a gasp she clutched her ribs, red staining the white tunic as a cut wept blood. The Sram took aim, and a spinning rope dart seized the creature's legs. They tangled and it fell, shaking the cavern with wicked force. Cocoons fell from the ceiling, some spilling into bones and filth. The Sram ran over to his friend."We can't win, Zell." She clutched her ribs."We don't have to. Do you trust me?""Of course""Then I need thirty seconds. Can you keep it busy?" A nod and a smile. Both hands gripped the sword so hard, her knuckles blanched. With a "Fade" the Sram was gone, just as the last of the rope broke and the gargant arose. Eliandra reversed the grip and charged. Dodging claws her sword connected with an inside leg, and the monster's weight dipped. She hit something important. It started backwards, but she was faster. A valiant cry rang as she leapt into the air and with a blinding light, "Celestial Sword connected. The blade hit hard, severing teeth and tissue. A torrent of ichor and saliva poured forth as the creature roared. It dashed to a safer distance and raised both claws overhead. She spun the sword upside-down and gripped the handle and the edge."Let courage be my shield"A claw came down in an earth shuddering clash. Another flash of light, and the Iop stood proudly. Hair flew in the wake of the massive force, but she stood tight. Wait, one claw? It knew! It fought Iop's Heart before. The second came too soon, and sent her flat against the ground. Dazed, she looked up only to get kicked across the room again. She could see the amber light, way at the back of the chamber. Behind the colossal spider towering overhead. Eliandra jumped to her feet, fists in the air. Retreat was not an option; she would fight to the last. But the choice was made for her when a massive claw seized her torso. She gasped in pain and pushed with all her strength, but it was meek in comparison. She felt herself lifted off the ground, towards the open maw. The breath of the creature stank of corpses, as a gurgling breath mocked her fate. But it wasn't the only sound. Wind picked up from behind."Shaa-dow Piercer and a thunder clash dropped the creature to it's knees. A tidal wave of ichor swept across its back, and a translucent shape ran over the head. It yanked the dagger out from the eye and jumped to her side. All she could see was the bleached bone mask in the dark"Got the kid. Let's go" and a shoulder picked up her arm. The two limed towards the tunnel as fast as they could, clutching a cocoon, as the gargant gave chase. Snarling and gurgling, it pulled itself forward with the pincers. It refused to die. Each titanic claw pulled it thirty paces. With increasing haste It chased after the pathetic intruders. The ancient monstrosity moved like a plow, tearing sturdy silk mesh like dandelions. It ripped a path through the cocoons, rending stalactites asunder. Some sparkling bag caught its eyes, NO, it would not be distracted. It would devour them alive. No, it would make the small one watch as it had a way with the Iop. All of a sudden it saw light. Not worm-light, not sun or moonlight. Light like never before. Light came from behind, spreading faster than fire. Light that hurt beyond belief. Was it the light of the twelve? Did they come to punish It? No, It was sorry. It wanted to live! The Sram's entire stash of alchemical explosives sent the earth shifting in a violent blast. The tunnel regurgitated fire and the air filled with the smell of burning hair. A deep rumble of setting stone told the young adventurers of their safety, but they wouldn't stop. Desperately, without looking back they ran towards the road, clutching the now wailing kid covered in spiderweb. The dancing lights of torches welcomed them back, as alarmed travelers hastily drew towards them. Zell rushed forward, handing over the kid to the parents."We did it, Ellie. You know, I could get used to this. What do you…" He couldn't finish. Torchlight told him a terrifying story. His mouth agape he ran back to his companion just as she collapsed. His shoulder where she leaned was strangely cold and wet. Her tunic was no longer white, it stuck to her body, drenched in blood. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
