Epilogue
- - - - -
The next morning, bright and early, found a very ruffled white demon staring at the outside of a slab of shale that had been braced against the doorway of his older son’s room. From inside the room the warm, glowing bond of a brand new and entirely happy mated pair filtered out to pollute the ambient space of the hall. The big demon sighed deeply, tail flicking behind him. He really should have known that something like this was on the verge of happening. Now… what to do about it? I don’t believe there’s much at all to be done, really. What’s done is done, odd as it all may seem. Damas glanced over at the much shorter, portlier figure that had joined him in the passage. Thank you for stating the obvious, Samos. I know as well as anyone that nothing can break a bond like that but the bonded ones themselves. Good, good. I just wanted to be sure you weren’t about to do something foolish. A low, annoyed grumble escaped before Damas could clamp it down. Oh, yes, of course. I was going to burst in there screaming and entice Jak to tear my face off protecting his new mate. He’s almost a match for me already. I have no desire whatsoever to fight the little cuss when he’s emotionally unstable. Then there’s not much of a problem, is there? Samos shrugged lightly. Jak is nothing if not devoted to his little friend. And he’s not the first to take a human as a mate, you know. It wasn’t so very uncommon once upon a time. Yes, once upon a time so long ago it’s almost worthy of being a fairytale. Damas sighed. I can’t help but worry, especially after what happened yesterday. Humans are so… frail. Jak was panicked senseless with nothing but the bonds of friendship between them. What will happen to him if Daxter is hurt now? I’m the last person who would want my son to find out what it feels like to lose a mate. Then we’ll simply have to make sure that the boy stays whole and unharmed. Don’t worry so much, my friend. He’s unquestionably part of the family now. The clan will look after him. I highly doubt anything will be harming your new son-in-law anytime soon. And? Damas glanced down at the small green demon after a moment of contemplative silence. There’s something else you want to say. Go on. I was just recollecting… Spit it out, Samos. Well, there are certain scrolls in existence which lead me to believe that it is entirely possible for humans to be trained in energy channeling—when they have proper instruction from demonkind, of course. With enough time and exposure to the kind of energy demons emit, a human would theoretically become more demon than human. Not that they’d grow wings, I don’t suppose, or tails, or proper claws or fangs—as far as I know, anyway—erm, I say, what are you doing, Damas? Damas was gently shoving at the shale barricading Jak’s room closed. As he pushed the bottom of the slab slid back, opening a small space between rock and floor. I’m giving Mar an easy entrance. I’m sure he’s quite upset that the big boys locked him out last night. You’re quite the cruel father, you realize. Nonsense. Mar will be along to wake them up shortly. Jak can’t keep Daxter penned up in there forever or they’ll both starve. The bigger demon fluffed his wings, satisfied with a job well done. Now, why don’t you and I go find some breakfast while we wait for my irresponsible son to be rooted out, and you can tell me more about these scrolls of yours… - - - - - The End.
