Roxas’ POV The weeks went by pretty quickly after Demyx and I finally spoke to Axel. Not much else happened. I’d go to work, sometimes Axel would come by my place and we’d talk or watch movies. Sometimes we’d go out with Demyx and his other friends. It was pretty normal. Normal was something that seemed to be lacking in my life as of late. I liked normal. Normal was good. I was currently sat at my position behind the counter in the book shop, reading silently to myself, when I heard the bell above the door ring. Glancing up over the rim of my glasses I saw my sister Naminé enter. She looked awful. Her hair was dishevelled and she had terribly dark circles beneath her eyes. She rushed over to me in a frenzy. “Roxas, I can’t do this anymore! I’m freaking out!” she cried frantically as she ran her hands nervously through her hair. I walked around the counter to her and held her arms gently by her sides. “Calm down, Naminé. Be calm, breathe. Why exactly are you freaking out?” I asked her steadily. “The wedding. Nothing is going right. The flowers will arrive late, most of the guests can’t get time from work to come to the ceremony and the wedding singer just cancelled. These are bad omens Roxy. There’s just over a week until the big day and nothing is going as I planned” She burst out crying and buried her head against my shoulder. I stroked her hair softly and shushed her to calm her down. “I’m sure everything will be ok. Flowers aren’t such a big deal, as long as you have your bouquet, you should be fine. The guests could be a problem but you know family are definitely going to be there, that’s all that matters, right?” I spoke to her sympathetically. I moved her so I could look at her face and I smiled. “You know… I might be able to help with the wedding singer. I have a friend who happens to be in that business. I can’t promise anything, but I’ll ask him for you” I said happily. Her eyes lit up and she hugged me tightly. “Thank you so much, Roxas!” she sniffled against my neck. Pulling away from me I could see she was at last smiling. “I’m so happy to hear that. After everything that seemed to be going wrong, one after another, you’ve helped so much” “Always happy to help, sis” I grinned at her. “Is everything else ok?” I ask as I walked back around the counter to my original place. “I suppose…” she began but trailed off, looking slightly saddened. I leaned forward on the counter, a concerned look crossing my face. “Marluxia seems a bit distant lately” she said finally, bringing a hand up to rub her arm. She released a sigh and dropped her hand to her side. “You’re probably imagining it” I said with a small smile. “You’ve been pretty busy with wedding preparations. You won’t let anyone interfere, so you probably interpret his distance from your plans as a distance from you, yourself” I shrugged my shoulders. “I hope you’re right…” She spoke. We both looked to the door when we heard the bell chime, seeing several people enter “Aah, I suppose I better be going, don’t want to keep your customers waiting. I’ll speak to you soon Roxas. Let me know if your friend will be available for the wedding” and with that she left. ---- On my way to my apartment that evening I came across Larxene. She was leaving the building with the bags that Axel and I had packed several weeks earlier. I was surprised she hadn’t collected her stuff sooner. She looked calm though, which was a surprise to see. Almost happy you could say. And she definitely had the pregnancy glow about her. It still didn’t change the fact that I hated her for she did to Axel. She looked at me, but paid me no mind. I half expected at least a scowl from her, but nope, nothing. I watched as she loaded her bags into a silver BMW with tinted windows. I couldn’t get a very good look at the driver. I had a feeling she was with the guy who she left Axel for. As soon as all her bags were in the car she got in and they sped off. Finally arriving home I took off my coat and threw it off to the side. I walked over to the couch and flung myself face first upon it. Letting out a loud sigh I turned over and looked at the ceiling. I was exhausted. ‘That had to be one of the busiest days yet at the book shop’ I thought to myself. I looked over to the far corner of my living room to where my easel stood. The covering was still over the painting I had been working on. In truth I hadn’t touched it for over 2 months. I’ve always been the worst at procrastinating, but in all honesty, I didn’t feel the need to paint it anymore. Initially I had started painting it because I longed to be able to see Axel, but now I see him on a daily basis. I didn’t really need it any longer. Groaning, I sat up when my stomach began rumbling. I scratched the back of my head and stood up. Padding my way over to the kitchenette I reached the fridge. Opening it up, I noticed it was void of any food, great. Pulling on my coat I decided I had better go shopping. Opening up my front door I exited but not before I was stopped by a taller figure. Looking up I saw Axel. “Hey, I was just coming to see you. You going out?” he asked me as he moved back slightly. “U-uh, yeah” I answered, shutting the door behind me. “I’ve ran out of food, so I just going to stock up. You, err… you wanna come with?” I asked him with a smile. He nodded slowly and shoved his hands in his coat pocket. “Ok” he grinned. --- “So…” I began as we were walking down the street. “I saw Larxene leaving your apartment today…” I left the statement hanging as I looked up to him. “Yeah, she came for the rest of her things. We had a long talk, settled a few things… I don’t quite forgive her yet. But the talk helped, it gave me closure you know?” He spoke, slightly bumping into my arm as we walked. “She told me to say sorry to you, for the way she acted last time you saw her. She’s changed, no more drink… trying to get on the straight and narrow” “hmm” I hummed in response. “She looked… good, happy I guess…” I spoke as I looked at the ground. Axel laughed lightly and nudged me. “What are you trying to say? Being with me was making her miserable?” he joked. “Don’t be stupid” I scolded, looking up at him in all seriousness. “If anything I thought it would have been the opposite. I know I’m miserable when you’re not around…” It was then that I looked away from him and quickened my pace down the street. Though, Axel easily caught up to me. His hand found its way to my head and mussed my hair gently. “I’m miserable when you’re not around, too” he spoke quietly. I could feel my face heating up at his words; I glanced up at him but quickly looked away when our eyes met fleetingly. The rest of the shopping trip was fairly quiet, save for the odd time I asked him to get something for me while I went for something else. I paid for my items and we left. When we got back to my apartment Axel offered to help me put away the groceries, to which I gratefully accepted. Once we were finished putting all the items away Axel sat down on the couch as I went to get out of my work clothes. When I entered the living room again I was met by Axel lying down on the couch with his eyes closed. I cleared my throat, startling him. I cocked a smile at his behaviour. When had he become so comfortable with me to just laze around like he did? “Comfortable?” I asked sarcastically, walking into the kitchenette. “Why yes, thank you” He responded with a smirk, closing his eyes once again. “Do you… wanna stay for dinner?” I ask making sure to keep my face buried in the fridge. He sat up and stretched his arms. “If you’re offering” he replied standing up. He walked over to my position and leant against the side of the fridge forcing me to peep out from the door to look at him. “Well if you’re staying, you’re helping” I grinned at him. “As long as I don’t end up in accident and emergency again…” he laughed walking over to sit on a counter top. I placed a hand on my hip and looked at him sceptically. “Hey, that wasn’t my fault. Besides, you took it like a man… sort of” He raised his hands in defence, the scar on his left hand shining ever so slightly from the light in the fridge. “I wasn’t blaming you. And you’re damn right I took it like a man!” “Yeah, I totally didn’t have to hold your hand or anything” I responded with a smirk on my face. “You offered. I just wanted to make you feel like you were helping” he shrugged amusedly. I narrowed my eyes at him slightly and huffed. “Riiiight” I walked over to the cupboard above the stove and grabbed a packet of spaghetti along with some bolognaise sauce. Filling a large pan with water I set it on the stove and turned it up to full heat. Ripping open the packet I pulled out enough spaghetti for the two of us and placed it into the pan. I sighed and sat on the counter top next to Axel. It was then that I remembered about Naminé and the favour she wanted me to ask the redhead beside me. “Oh, uhm I have a favour to ask you…” I looked at him pleadingly. “Go on” he answered with a small smile. “You know as my sister is getting married in just over a week?” “You want me to marry her, instead of that Marlene dude?” he laughed. “It’s Marluxia and no” I corrected, elbowing him lightly. “The wedding singer cancelled at the last minute and she was wondering if you would take his place” “Are you kidding? Of course I will. I mean, work’s been hard to come by lately but I’d be honoured, man” He smiled widely at me. I let out a sigh of relief. “You don’t know how happy this is going to make her” I spoke as I gave him a side hug to which he returned. “Thank you” “No problem” he grinned, tying his hair back before he hopped off the counter to tend to the boiling pan. I followed suit and helped to finish preparing the meal. --- Axel flopped down next to me on the couch once we’d both finished eating. He let out a satisfied sigh and patted his stomach. “I gotta say, Roxas. We make a good team in the kitchen” He grinned as he placed his hand on my shoulder. “I guess we do, huh?” I responded with a smile. “There’s no guessin’ about it Rox. That was delicious. I might have to eat here more often” he laughed. “Oh I see how it is. I’m a free meal ticket now am I?” I asked in faux shock. “You bet” He smirked at me with a wink. I scoffed at him and shoved him playfully, to which he returned with a more forceful push, resulting in me falling clumsily from the couch with a thud. “Owww” I groaned from my position on the floor. I rubbed my back; sure I was going to have a nice bruise there in the morning. “Crap, are you ok?” Axel asked concerned as he got up from the couch to examine me. “Yeah… no thanks to you…” I mumbled under my breath. “Sorry…” he half-assedly apologised as he sat in front of me on the floor. “I didn’t realise I had to be so delicate around you, I assumed you were a dude…” He said feigning innocence. “Ass” I scoffed at him, making the redhead chuckle. Grinning to myself I looked up at him slyly before I pushed him back and successfully pinned him down by sitting on his abdomen. “Not so delicate now am I?” and without any further notice I began attacking his sides, tickling him relentlessly. “Wha- ahaha s-stop! Haha-Ro-Roxas, cut it out!” He squirmed beneath my touch. “No, not until you take it back and admit I’m manlier than you!” I laughed as my fingers hurriedly crossed his stomach and back to his ribs. “S-shit, Roxas this isn’t- ahaha- isn’t funny! Ok, ok! I give in! I give in!!” His breathing was erratic and there were a few stray tears rolling down the side of his face from laughing so hard. “You’re an ass” He stated but he looked panicked when I threatened to continue my assault on him. “Fine, you’re the manliest man there ever was. Even though you had to resort to dirty tactics to get your own way…” He huffed at me. Grinning I shifted my position on top of him. “A-ah, shit” The redhead beneath me hissed. “Roxas, you’re err… kinda sat in an uncomfortable place there…” He stuttered, breathing seeming a lot more uneven. Looking at my position I noticed I’d unknowingly shifted to his crotch. I could feel my neck and face heating up from embarrassment. I hadn’t quite realised how awkward my positioning had been until Axel had actually spoken. Quickly, I scrambled to get off of him, though a small part of me had wanted to stay sat there, just to see how he’d react. But as history served with Axel, I didn’t really fancy having another black eye from the guy. “S-sorry… I didn’t realise...” I muttered to him shyly. “S’fine” he waved me off from his position lying on the floor. I was surprised at how unfazed he looked, and yet there I was feeling as though the ground was going to swallow me up at any second. Closing my eyes, I hit my forehead a few times, internally scolding myself ‘Stupid, stupid, stupid’. When I opened my eyes again I saw Axel sat right in front of me with a small smile on his face. “You over think things too much” he laughed lowly as he flicked my forehead, causing me to flinch. “And you clearly not enough” I spoke quietly due to the sheer proximity between us. “Look I said it was fine. Accidents happen. Besides, it’s the most action I’m going to be getting for a while” He grinned at me. I merely rolled my eyes at his stupidity. After a few moments of silence Axel let out a sigh and fell backwards to lie back down. He crossed his arms behind his head, resting on his hands. “So…” he spoke up, startling me slightly. “I guess you get to hear me sing pretty soon, huh?” “Y-yeah, I guess so. I can’t wait” I said contentedly. “I’m really not that good Roxas.” He said continuing to stare at the ceiling. “I bet you’re amazing” I said to him honestly. “Flattery gets you everywhere” He laughed. I couldn’t help but chuckle too. A few more moments of silence passed between the two of us. Biting my bottom lip I crawled over to where Axel was lying, making him glance up at me. “You know, you could sing now if you wanted?” I didn’t mean for that to come out sounding like a question, but it did. “No chance. It’s too intimate now. A crowd of people is fine, but one on one has never been something I was ok with” He answered, glancing off to the side. “Never? Not… Not even with Larxene?” I asked him timidly, brushing a piece of hair behind my ear. “Nope. She may have caught me singing in the shower or singing along to the radio, but I’d never actually sat down with her and sung too her. I just, don’t like feeling like I’m being judged” His toxic green eyes darted back and forth as he looked into my own. “What if I promised not to judge you?” I questioned him, my voice just above a whisper. “No, I’m sorry Roxas, I just can’t… Not yet, ok?” He said finally. My heart fluttered at his words. He was saying that one day, when he was ready, he may just sing for me; and that thought made me unbelievably happy. “Ok” I nodded enthusiastically at him. “But in the mean time I going to try and catch you in the shower” I laughed, but Axel quirked an eyebrow at me with a confused expression plastered on his face. My mind finally caught up to what I had said. Immediately my hands flew up to my face and covered my mouth in embarrassment. “That didn’t come out right, I mean… I want to catch you singing in the shower! I don’t want to see you naked… I mean, not that I’m saying that would be a terrible thing… but I’m not saying it’s a good thing either! Augh! I’m going to go shrivel up and die now, ok?” I exclaimed as I shrank into myself, hunching my shoulders up and making sure to keep eye contact with the floor at all times. Axel laughed loudly at my humiliation, only serving to make my face turn a deeper shade of red. “You’re so weird, Roxas” He chuckled, standing up to stretch. “That’s what I like about you” I beamed widely at his words, causing the redhead in turn to smile back at me. Hitching up his sleeve he looked at his watch, eyes widening slightly at the time. “I’m gonna head off home, I didn’t realise it was so late. I’ll uh… see you tomorrow? I could meet you at work for lunch? My treat this time” He grinned. “O-Ok” I stuttered. He opened the front door and turned back to me. “Then it’s a date” and with a two fingered salute and a wink, he exited my apartment. --- Axel’s POV Once I’d arrived back home I promptly kicked off my shoes and lay down on the sofa. Reaching over to the coffee table I picked up the remote control and a pack of cigarettes. After turning the TV on, I sparked up a smoke. To be honest I wasn’t really interested on watching the TV right now. I was too distracted. My mind just kept drifting off to the meeting I had with Larxene earlier that day. -- It was around 3pm when I finally woke up after hearing a knocking at my front door. I’d not been sleeping well the last few nights, so I was finally catching up on my sleep. There was the knocking again. “Alright, alright…” I groaned standing up from my bed. Scratching my side I yawned and padded my way out of my bedroom and out into the hallway. I sleepily opened the door and scratched my head, another yawn escaping my mouth. “Have I come at a bad time?” A familiar feminine voice asked. Opening my eyes I saw Larxene, she was wearing a dark red winter coat with black gloves covering her small hands. Her face was tinted red from the cold outside. “U-uh no” I stammered out. “I just came for the rest of my things” She said calmly as she removed her gloves. “Oh, okay” I replied, stepping aside allowing her to enter our… err my apartment. “You look good” I commented as she walked past me, the faint scent of lavender following her. “Thank you… I guess” she turned around at looked at me. “I actually have you to thank for that. Some of the things you said to me last time we spoke really hit home. I’ve stopped drinking and I’m staying at my mom’s… she’s keeping me on track” “That’s great” I responded as I followed her into my bedroom. “I packed the rest of your things. Your bags are over by the wardrobe” I pointed out before sitting on the bed. She mumbled a thanks to me and began sorting through her bags to check everything was there. “So, how have you been?” she asked me turning around briefly to look at me. “I’ve been ok. I’ve got people keeping my head above water, if that’s what you’re asking” I replied leaning back and looking at the ceiling. “By people you mean that little blonde guy across the way?” She laughed lowly. “…yeah” I answered by quietly. “Next time you see him, tell him I’m sorry that I snapped at him” she insisted as she pushed one bag to the side satisfied with its contents. “Yeah, I w-will” I answered her nervously. Why nervously? Because she was currently looking through the suitcase that had the baby things I had collected. “What’s this?” she asked confusedly. I closed my eyes tightly and sighed. “Some stuff I collected… when we were together” I grunted out. She picked up the small box and inspected it before taking off the lid. Her eyes widened for a brief moment but her gaze soon softened. She ran her fingers over the tiny baby grow, took a deep intake of breathe and shut the box again. “I had no idea…” she began. “Doesn’t matter. You can keep it… you know... you don’t have to say it was from me… the other guy doesn’t have to know” I shrugged and rubbed the back of my neck. Suddenly I felt the bed dip beside me. “You know there is still a chance you’re the kid’s dad, right?” she placed her hand on my knee only for her to remove it just as quickly as she placed it there. I looked at her sadly. “I’m being honest when I say this. But I hope it’s not. You and I were never good for each other. I mean, look at you now. You’ve been gone over a month and already you’re getting your life back on track. We’re chaotic together. That’s no environment to bring up a child” I spoke honestly to her, my gaze not wavering once. “I understand. I don’t want that for the kid either. But if you do happen to be the father, I want you to be as involved as you want to be. I’m not forcing you” She smiled slightly. “How far…?” I began asking but finished by pointing to her stomach. “14 weeks now. I’m finally showing” she smiled. “I have a scan picture if you want to see it?” she asked cautiously. I nodded in approval, to which she began searching through her handbag. Soon after he produced the small scan picture and handed it over to me. It looked so tiny. It was hard to believe that the beginnings of a tiny person was growing inside of her, and it made me feel like my heart was being constricted. I handed the picture back to her before I grew attached to it. “When will you know the sex?” I asked as she carefully placed the picture back into her bag. “In about 6 to 7 weeks” she replied. “You can come along if you want to…” “I’ll think about it” I said quietly. She only nodded in reply. I glanced at her and chuckled softly. “Look at us. We can be civil when we’re not together” This caused Larxene to smile. She placed her hand back on my knee and gave it a light squeeze before she stood up and started collecting her things. With a suitcase and a few handbags in tow she headed towards the door and into the hallway. “We could go out for a coffee if you wanted? Though, no coffee for me… Just to catch up” she suggested as she stood in front of the front door. “Aah, I can’t. I’m going to head over to Roxas’ shortly, he should be home from work soon, so I want to say hi” I smiled, scratching the back of my head. Larxene shook her head and smirked. “You really like him don’t you?” she asked amusedly. “Yeah… I mean, he’s really been there for me lately” I shrugged. “No, I mean you like him” she teased. “What? N-no! I do… but not like that” I exclaimed, my face heating up slightly. “Don’t act so shocked. There were times when I questioned yours and Demyx’s relationship when we were teenagers. You used to practically be all over each other before we started a relationship” She stated with a smug grin on her face. “Besides, he likes you too” I narrowed my eyes at her sceptically. “How do you even know?” “Call it woman’s intuition” she smiled as she rubbed her ever-so-slightly protruding stomach “Anyways, I should get going, my ride is waiting downstairs. I hope to see you soon” and with that she grabbed on to the handle of the suitcase and left. -- Sighing, I sat up and rubbed at my eyes. It was easy to see why I was feeling distracted now, right? I a long and much needed drag on my cigarette and scratched my head, feeling the tenseness ease its self from my shoulders as the menthol smoke filled my lungs. Such a disgusting habit I had gained from the 8 turbulent years I had spent with Larxene, but it relaxed me. Removing the death stick from my mouth I stubbed it out in the ash tray. ‘He likes you too.’ Those words kept circling in my mind. Bah. He likes me too. Whatever, it’s not like I like him that way. Sure I like him. I can be myself around him, and he makes me happy and he understands me. Why wouldn’t I like him? But, when I’m around him, I do feel a warmth in my chest that I’ve not experienced in a long time. And he did say that he’s miserable when I’m not around. Though to be fair, I did admit it back to him. Standing up I stretched my arms above my head and let out and exhausted groan. And without really thinking about it I found myself walking over to the window on the far side of my apartment. Upon looking through said window I saw Roxas standing behind an easel. Wearing an old tattered and paint covered shirt and paint splattered jeans. He looked so deep in concentration, it was admirable. To see him doing something he seemed so passionate about. He took a step backwards and examined his work. After a few moments he placed his hand on his chin, only for him to remove it a second later to reveal what seemed to be blue paint all over his face. I couldn’t help but laugh. He looked… adorable. Suddenly I noticed he’d spotted me and I could feel my own face sporting a new colour as well. He waved shyly and my heart melted. Waving back I smiled, then teasingly pointed to my chin to indicate that he still had paint on his face. Hurriedly he used his sleeve to wipe away the offending substance. I laughed once again and then waved a salute to him as a good bye. I guess I do like him, just a little bit. Damn Larxene, she just had to be right…
