A misleading breeze crept into the house, picking up flecks of dust and wood for a midnight stroll. It danced around the room, beneath a table, around chairs, over the long since dead fireplace. A few embers stirred at the wind’s presence, yet resumed their sleep as it passed on. Letting go its company for better prospects, the breeze funneled through a crack in another door, finding more than loose dust and dying light within. It curled around floorboards before leaving the comfort of the ground, giving it up for the view of the ceiling. Its last glimpses of the room before the window carried it out into the night was a sleeping figure on the bed with another sitting beside it. Altius had his fingers locked together, elbows resting on his knees. He was all but asleep, his breathing light and even as his head hung below his shoulders. Kyli lay on the bed in front of him, her face still streaked with tears. A small creak made his eyes snap open, but his body reacted much more fluidly. In fact, he hardly reacted at all, despite his worried senses. Soon after, he felt a hand on his shoulder, rubbing him comfortingly. He didn’t react when the hand left, and the next grinding sounds reminded him of when he had brought his chair to its particular spot. Sitting down next to him, he could tell that the intruder meant no harm, despite being so late at night. If he had cared to, he could have discovered exactly who it was without moving, but his sleep-deprived, pain-wracked brain decided against it. He felt the hand again moving along his leg, quickly moving to his own hands. It crept in between them, and even though he’d only felt them in such a way a few times before, he knew the hands belonged to Emyth. With her touch his mind finally let itself rest, content. The birds were chirping. It was strange, that in the aftermath of his father disappearing, life around him went on as normal. The birds often woke him up, when his mother didn’t get there first. His mother! Altius sat up quickly, the sheets covering him falling to reveal his exposed chest. He looked down in mild puzzlement before shrugging it off, leaping out of his bed that he didn’t remember falling asleep in. Dashing out of his relatively small room, he saw that the living room was clean. The sight slowed him considerably, and the thought crossed his mind that it had all been a dream. He toyed with the idea as he walked toward his parent’s room, opening the door without a sound. The growing bubble of hope deflated as he saw his mother alone in her bed. He closed the door slowly, allowing her the rest she needed. He became aware of the smells of cooking food coming from the kitchen. It was so strong; he was surprised he didn’t notice it from his own room. He could hear the clank of utensils working away on their product. It was so familiar. He began moving toward the archway that led into the kitchen. Peering around the corner, he saw who was hard at work at the fire. It was Emyth. She was using a wooden spoon to poke at the eggs as they cooked in a skillet over the fire. He smiled, slightly amused by her inexperience. He slowly moved toward her, his bare feet making the smallest of sounds on the smoothed floor. Emyth shook the pan she held slightly, getting the eggs to shift around. Reaching out, Altius placed a hand on her shoulder. Emyth jumped, the eggs flying out of the pan slightly, the elf managing to jerk it back and forth to catch them again. She turned her head, her angry expression fading once she saw that it was Altius. It quickly came back in full force as she stood up, facing him. “Why’d you do that? I almost dropped your breakfast!” She said, Altius raising his hands in defense. “Hey, you did it to me last night.” Emyth’s face immediately calmed, and almost went a little worried. She looked off to the side as she said, “…you were awake for that?” Altius nodded, not quite following what she was worried about. “…how much were you awake for?” Altius shrugged, stretching slightly. “I fell asleep when you put your hand in mine.” Emyth sighed. “Good. That’s… good.” Her eyes fell back to Altius before she turned around completely, but not before he caught a glimpse of her blush. “Altius… you’re all but nude.” Altius looked down, confused. He was only wearing his boxers. And to make matters worse, he had a mild case of morning wood. He coughed quietly, turning toward the archway. “I’ll just… be changing now.” “You do that.” Emyth said behind him. “…when’d you hear about it?” Altius asked, lounging in his chair. Pic had come back to him after spending the night outside, now resting on his shoulder. “I came to your house sometime in the afternoon, but no one was home… well, there was someone. It was a priestess. She said she was cleaning, and that the family would be back tomorrow…” Emyth said, spinning a fork between her fingers. “After a while I decided to check the church to see if they had finished what they were doing… but they had me wait for some time before Arthur told me what had happened… it was late then, but I came over as soon as I could.” Altius nodded, watching the metal’s gleam as it danced through the elf’s digits. “They told us we could go home just as the moon rose, so I brought my mother home… she didn’t want me to leave her side though.” Soft footsteps made both of them look up at the archway, seeing Kyli walking through it. She nodded at both of them, having cleaned herself up from last night. She was wearing plain white clothes, as opposed to her normal, exotic mail. Altius leaned forward in his chair as Emyth stood up, smiling as she walked toward Kyli. Wrapping her arms around the other elf, the two embraced for several seconds before Emyth spoke. “Are you hungry, Kyli?” Kyli hesitated for a moment before nodding slightly. As Emyth went to grab the skilled off of the fire, Kyli took a seat next to Altius, not looking at anything in particular. “Mom…” Kyli hardly responded, but glanced over at Altius for a moment. “Wh-” he began before sighing, wondering if questioning her was the best course of action. When she looked at him expectantly, he spoke again, not meeting her gaze. “What do you know about the man who took dad?” Kyli sighed, as if she knew the question was coming. “His name is Tylron…” Emyth set the plate with the egg on it down in front of Kyli, but it remained untouched as she continued explaining what she knew. “He’s the one who brought Quill here in the first place.” “What?” Altius said, leaning forward. “Brought him-” “Shh.” Emyth said, placing a hand over Altius’. “She’ll explain.” Kyli nodded in thanks, continuing. “Quill was from another world originally, a planet he called Earth. He told me that Tylron had brought him here a long time ago… I actually met him the first day he arrived.” A tear welled up in the corner of her eye as she spoke, but its journey down her face did little deter her explanation. “He seemed content to stay here…with me…” Altius nodded, oblivious to the fact that Emyth was still holding his hand. “And? What about Tylron?” “Even Quill didn’t know much about him. He knew that he was immensely powerful…” Kyli said, sighing as she grabbed her fork and began to cut her egg. “He told me he tried to contact him once for a girl named Serenity… but Tylron threatened to send him back to Earth, so he cut the connection.” “Serenity?” Altius asked. “Who was she?” “Serenity was a draenei girl… One day Quill spotted her balled up in a panic while a guard tried to console her. Quill decided to help her out… he never went into detail about her, but he said that she was like him… from Earth.” “This ‘Earth’ has draenei living alongside humans?” Emyth asked curiously. “I don’t know. Like I said, he never really went into it… I think he didn’t want to think about it much.” Kyli said. “But Serenity was determined to get back… after Quill told her he couldn’t help her, she went to Goldshire and apparently found someone who helped her find him.” “Goldshire…” Altius said softly. It wasn’t the easiest place to obtain information in. “That’s all I know…” Kyli said regretfully as she took a bite of her breakfast. Altius stood up, taking a step toward his mother before wrapping his arms around her. “Thank you…” he said quietly. She didn’t respond. He let go, turning toward the door. “I’ll be back.” “No.” Kyli said firmly. “You’re not going after him.” Altius shook his head, smiling. “I’m not. Not yet, anyways. I’m just going to find out what I can.” “I’d rather you go after him right now than go to Goldshire alone…” Emyth said quietly. Altius raised an eyebrow. “Someone there knows how to find Tylron. And I’m going to find them. The sooner I start looking, the better.” “Then I’m going with you.” Emyth said, beginning to stand up. The boy shook his head. “Going in pairs there is bad, you know that. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” He started to walk out the door when he heard his mother speak. “Just… be careful, alright?” “Will do.” He said as he stepped outside. It was a loud as ever. Even in the middle of the day, it seemed like the party never ended at Goldshire. There were more people outside than there were yesterday, getting into drunken brawls and flirting and making rash decisions and who knows what else. Altius kept his eyes down as he made his way for the inn, thinking about who he could ask for information. “Hey babe, you want some fun tonight?” Glancing to his left, he saw a human girl, several years older than himself, standing with some difficulty. She was leaning on the small fence next to her, but even that didn’t help conceal her state of mind. Altius merely shook his head, passing her and stepping into the inn itself. He had never actually been in the inn. It seemed louder than outside, and seemed to have even more people, crammed together in the corners or at the tables. There were whoops and cheers from the table just right of the entrance, as several wealthy looking men were tossing to gold coins to female dancers on the table. Most of them were nearly nude, others being in very suggestive clothing. Altius found it a little hard to breathe as he made his way through the mass of people. Somehow, they seemed to move into his path as he came across them. Most of them didn’t even notice, and the occasional few tried saying something to him, but he couldn’t make out what they were saying. He simply pushed on, thinking that he should have made a plan before entering the inn. Spotting a bar across the room, Altius made his way towards it, hoping the barkeeper would know something or someone who could help. He spotted some dwarf with a tankard in each hand get off of his stool, stumbling over to watch the dancers, and he hurried towards it, knowing that he wouldn’t get another chance for some time. After tripping and bumping into several people, he finally found himself at the bar, the smell of alcohol almost overpowering the noise of the inn itself. He just now noticed that the patrons of the bar seems a little more composed than the rest of the inn, the two people sitting on either side of him particularly. On his left was an upper-class looking women with her back against the bar, sipping some red drink out of a wine glass and watching the inn’s denizens. On his right was a man dressed in leather armor that looked deceptively formal in appearance. It was made of blue leather with gold trimmings, through the mask that covered his face looked rather shaggy. He stared straight ahead, not paying the inn any attention. Altius looked in front of him, spotting the barkeeper to being eyeing him apprehensively. It was a younger looking human who was wiping a mug clean. He said something, and this time Altius could actually hear him. “You’re a little young to be here, don’t ya think?” “Maybe.” Altius said, his voice unnaturally loud to him. “I’m here looking for someone.” The barkeep had someone yell something at him that Altius couldn’t make out, but he just nodded and started to fill the mug he was holding with beer. “Bit of an odd place to look for someone. Who is it?” “I…” Altius realized he had no idea who might know something about Tylron. It would make searching for them rather difficult. “Looking for someone who can tell me anything about a guy named Tylron.” “Tylron?” The barkeeper repeated, handing the mug off to someone at the end of the bar. “Can’t say I know them. Say, Billz, you know anyone by that name?” He said, referring to the man sitting to Altius’s right. The man, Billz, closed his eyes. “No.” The barkeeper looked at him curiously. “Funny, and you seem to know so much. Ah well. Sorry kid, can’t help ya, and I doubt anyone else in here will give you the time of day. Or night. Hell, I don’t even know what time it is. Can’t remember how long I’ve been working. Yea yea…” he said as he grabbed another mug off the wall, filling it with more beer. Altius turned to face the inn, scanning the crowd for anyone who looked like they could help. There were drunks, angry dwarves, unintentional comedians, strippers, pimps, unimpressed fledgling fighters, rogues, warriors, mages, and many other types of people he’d never see outside of this little village. And not one of them looked like they could, or would be willing to help him. Sighing, he hopped off his stool. The noises didn’t seem as loud as he brushed by people on his way out. The road back to Stormwind almost seemed like another world compared to Goldshire. It was quiet, peaceful. Altius trudged along, not knowing what to do now. His only lead proved fruitless. He looked toward the sky, hoping there was some oddly shaped cloud to ease his mind. What he saw instead was a large bird soaring overhead, much larger than Pic. It seemed to him like a grey hawk, and it seemed intent on its destination. It flew in front of him, soaring calmly until it went out of sight over the city. Altius shrugged. There was no point in worrying now, there was still a job that needed to be done. He’d just have to prepare for the next time. With that decided, he looked back toward the city gates, seeing someone walking toward him where he was sure there was no one moments before. It was the man from the bar. Billz, he thought. He was still wearing his mask, so he couldn’t tell what he wanted from his face. But now he could see a dagger with red designs cut into sheathed on the man’s belt, glinting in the sun. Even from a distance, he could tell that it had been sharpened recently. Wishing he had brought some sort of weapon, Altius stopped walking, eyeing Billz warily. Billz slowed down when Altius stopped, walking more casually instead of urgently. As he got closer, Altius realized his eyes were orange. “Hey, kid. Fancy meeting you here.” Altius narrowed his eyes, clenching his fist slowly before releasing it. “Quite.” Billz stopped walking several paces away from Altius. Hooking his thumb in his belt, Billz cocked his head at the boy. “You were looking for Tylron.” “You lied about not knowing him.” Altius said quietly. Billz nodded. “You catch on quick. But there’s no need to try to intimidate me. I’m here to help you.” “Why didn’t you help me at Goldshire?” “Too many people who could overhear it. He’s not the kind of person you want to go shouting about.” “Why bother, then?” Billz sighed, glancing off to his left. Pulling his dagger from his belt, he flipped it in the air, grabbing it by the blade. Without warning, he threw it. Altius ducked, but there still came a sickening sound and scream from behind him. There was a thud as he turned around, and Altius realized that the bandit had fallen to the ground, a small cloud of dust already dispersing around him. Billz’s dagger was lodged firmly in his skull, just to the right of his nose. Altius looked back at Billz, seeing the man start to walk towards him. “I’m not sure why I chose to help you.” He said, passing by Altius and dragging the dagger out of the bandit and wiping it on his rough tunic. “Hearing that bastard’s name again reminded me of someone who was rather special to me.” “Serenity?” Altius said, noting with satisfaction the look that came across Billz’s face. “How did you…” Billz started, and then shook his head. “No matter. You have a place we can talk?” “Sure. My house work?” Billz shrugged. “Sounds fine. Lead the way.”
